Message prof. dr. tahir amin

Dr. Saeed Akhtar

Vice Chancellor Bahuaddin Zakaryia University, Multan

Director, Institute of Food Science and Nutrition

New paradigms in health and well being are primarily based upon better nutrition and supply of safe food. The dream to achieve millennium development goals (MDG) that entail reduction in poverty, revolves around better nutrition and proper care of the people of all ages. Institute of Food Science and Nutrition at Bahauddin Zakariya University, indeed has been playing a pivotal role in raising awareness among a variety of population segments in the realm of nutritional sciences. Being a premier center for disseminating knowledge in food safety and quality, this Institute has gained tremendous popularity among the stakeholders including food industries, farmers’ community, NGOs, research organizations, consumer groups and business community. I appreciate the efforts of Dr. Saeed Akhtar for his valuable and continuous efforts to promote this institute.

Institute of Food Science and Nutrition has indeed emerged as a premier institution imparting information and knowledge to the stakeholders including students, industry professionals and NGOs in the realm of food safety and nutrition not only in Southern Punjab but also in the whole country. I am confident that this institute would be able to cater the needs of food industry for the provision of highly skilled food professionals to meet the future requirements of Pakistan for ample food resources. The institute focuses upon ensuring food security and safety at all levels for which a series of awareness programs including seminars, conferences, symposia and trainings etc. are undertaken throughout the year.

I wish further growth for this Institute in the days to come. Prof. Dr. Tahir Amin

Dr. Saeed Akhtar

The concept of manufacturing and processing of food has transformed with new scientific techniques in place. I am delight to state the IFSN has been able to bridge up this gap through its extensive networking with stake holders. Dr. Saeed Akhtar, Director IFSN, being a vibrant food professional has been contributing to meet food industry needs for skilled human resource. I pray for the success and prosperity of this institute.

Food safety is very hot and burning issue in Pakistan and I really appreciate the efforts of the Institute of Food Sciences and Nutrition, BZU, Multan which has taken a big step by starting PhD in Food Microbiology. This degree will also cover immunological and molecular biology aspects of food microbiology. I am sure that these PhD scholars will be a great asset for food industry of Pakistan, which need massive invasion of qualified food microbiologists.

I wish this institute to progress by leaps and bounds be prosperous in the days to come.

Prof. Dr. faqir Muhammad Anjum

It is now an established fact that a dream to progress will not come true without assuring a supply of nutritious, safe and healthy food especially to the vulnerable population of the country. Apparently, this seems to be a herculean task however a crew of food professionals, prepared by national centers of food studies having immense intellect and potential to meet modern day requirements of safe and nutritious food supply is in place. These food scientists, technologists, nutritionists and microbiologists are determined to ensure availability of abundant and cost effective foods through application of modern techniques. IFSN under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Saeed Akhtar (Director) has now been standing at a higher rung of development ladder in terms of addressing issues of public health significance such as food insecurity, micronutrients deficiencies, food adulteration, supply of unhygienic and substandard foods to the masses etc. I am sure this institute will go a long way to promote research and education in food and associated disciplines to effectively contribute in the prosperity and growth of the nation in general and people of Southern Punjab in particular. I wish every success for this institute.

The management of the IFSN is proud to announce that UniAqua– a mineral water brand of Institute of Food Science and Nutrition, Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, has been licensed by Pakistan Standard and Quality Control Authority Pakistan. Safe water is great benediction of God. General recommendation for an adult person is to consume approximately 2 L of water per day, excluding beverages such as coffee, tea, and other drinks. Pakistan Council of Research and Water Resources (PCRWR, 2012) assesses that 40 percent of all reported illnesses are water-related. Realizing this responsibility, IFSN has taken an initiative to pro-

vide safe and healthier drinking water to the community. Today, this bottled water provides the best experience to the consumer and is filled into hermetically sealed bottles of various forms, and capacities that are safe and suitable for direct consumption. For safety of consumers, there exists a continuous testing of water quality by conducting microbiological, chemical and sensory evaluation in the laboratories of the institute. It is worth mentioning that IFSN is the only institute of the region that has greatly filled the gap for the supply of safe water to the local community.

Osteoporosis DAY

MOU BETWEEN INSTITUTE OF FOOD SCIENCE AND NUTRITION (BAHAUDDIN ZAKARIYA UNIVERSITY) AND VOLKA FOODS INTERNATIONAL, MULTAN

WORLD OSTEOPOROSIS DAY Bones, being the support system of our body holds tremendous significance in normal and healthy life especially in the later part of life. Before the age of 30-35, the body is capable of creating new bone faster, but after age 30, the bone building balance naturally shifts and more bone is lost than

gained. These bones undergo the processes of deterioration after the age of 30-35 (Peak Bone Mass). When the body can’t create new bone as fast as the old bone is lost, osteoporosis can set in, causing bones to become weak and brittle and allowing them to fracture more easily. The disease is most common in post-

menopausal women over the age of 65 and in men over the age of 70. IFSN realizing its responsibility to promote awareness on health implication of this disease, celebrated the World Osteoporosis Day by arranging a seminar and a thematic walk “Better Nutrition for Better Bone Health” on October 20, 2015. Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmad Gill renowned Orthopedic Surgeon was invited to speak on the occasion Dr. Gill gave very informative and comprehensive talk on “Better Nutrition for Better Bone Health”. He also briefly discussed reasons and consequences of osteoporosis in our life and suggested measures for optimum bone health that include boosting bone density. Dr. Saeed Akhtar also gave his valuable remarks about the importance of calcium and Vitamin D in human body. He suggested the audience to read his review article entitle to comprehend the Vitamin D deficiency situation in this region.

Vitamin D plays an essential role in maintaining good health. It has several important functions, such as helping regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These elements are needed to keep the bones and teeth healthy. With-

out adequate vitamin D, bones can become thins, In extreme cases this can lead to rickets in children, a condition involving softening of the bones that can lead to fractures and deformity. In adults softening of the bones is usually called osteomalacia, and may cause pain and muscle weakness. At this important occasion, Worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Tahir Amin was the Chief Guest. He said that institute of food science and nutrition is contributing in real sense to raise awareness

among the vulnerable population groups. He advised students to utilize their time in constructive and healthy activities. He reiterated that we should move together to make this university a better place for teaching and research to elevate the standards of education this region .
