spire FOOTWEAR

Spire is a sustainable footwear solution designed for impoverished children in India that cannot afford such necessities. Spire aids in protecting the foot from injuries and exposure to soil-transmitted infections that are transmitted through exposed skin. The solution utilizes locally sourced materials and manufacturing that will benefit the local economy and provide opportunities for the community.

RESEARCH

PROBLEM

SOIL TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS Soil Transmitted Helminth infections are one of the most widespread infections in the world. These infections effect the poorest and most deprived countries and communities around the world. Soiltransmitted helminths are different species of parasitic worms that are contracted from tainted soil. These diseases are transmitted through eggs from human feces and contaminated soil through the skin. STH infections lead to various diseases and worm infections of the human body. Young children, pregnant women and elderly are at highest risk.

POVERTY IN INDIA 1.2 billion people around the world live in extreme poverty. Approximately 400 million are children. These are families and individuals living on less than $1.25 a day. This amounts to the cost of all clothes, shelter, food and medicine. India has the highest population of people that fall beneath the poverty line. India accounts for approximately 30% of the worlds poorest people.

The spire project is a global campaign to raise awareness about soil transmitted diseases and effect is has on our youth. The project aims to get our template in to as many hands as possible and create the largest collaborative global team of creators in the world. Based off of our template, our goal is to encourage and inspire anyone to produce, create and distribute innovative designs to the community and others in need.
