PROGRAM NOTES
T
Night time on the moon is quite different to that on Earth. When the Sun sets on the Moon it doesn’t become completely dark. Why? Because the Earth is providing a light fifty times brighter than a full moon. This ‘glowing’ Earth is created by light from the Sun, reflecting off the Earth’s surface. This is what we call “Earthshine”. It is during the moon cycles known as waxing and waning crescents that we can see this glow on the moon’s surface. You may have seen it yourself – a bright crescent moon in the arms of the full Moon’s shadow. In this piece, the concept of reflection is explored in several ways, drawing parallels between reflected light and echoed melodic material. The first half of the piece also sounds a little unsure of itself. This tentative writing invites the audience and players alike to consider what people must of thought about Earthshine before Leonardo Da Vinci explained the phenomena around 1510. A Timpani solo in the middle of the work allows both performer and audience to imagine the desolate landscape of the moon at midnight, bathed in the Earth’s radiant glow. The final section of the piece hastens in tempo and develops a fullness of sound; drawing from the confidence we now have with regard to space travel and NASA’s planned return to the moon by 2018. It is anticipated that Astronauts will live at the South Pole of the Moon for some weeks. They will experience ‘night’ on the moon and be the first human beings to experience Earthshine from the Moon.

REHEARSAL NOTES
T
GONG (AUXILIARY PERCUSSION 2), MEASURE 1-2 & 146-end To understand what is intended here, watch this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO2Hx-tu67U Where can I purchase Mike Balter ERSR Super Rubber Mallets? http://www.amazon.com/Mike-Balter-MBERSR-ERSR-Mallets/dp/B002BJT090 http://www.steveweissmusic.com/category/mike-balter-emil-richards http://www.balter.com/emil_richards_sound_of_the_studio_series.htm#
OFFSTAGE/AUDIENCE SOLOISTS, MEASURE 2 Invite Soloists to play around with tempo and dynamics and challenge the “echo” to match how they play their particular phrase. Quasi-improvisation with these expressive techniques is strongly encouraged. Once you reach measure 3, invite ‘echo’ performers to re-join the band as quietly as possible. Make sure you rehearse this before your first performance!
COLOUR WHEEL SCORES Colour wheel scores enable you to divide your band into teams. I encourage you to host 1-2 rehearsals where the students get to sit with their team in a small circle. Dot the circles around each other. THEN have students decide if they are playing WITH their team or someone else. This is a great exercise in listening and helps them hear outside of their section thus developing ensemble blend and intonation.
TIMPANI SOLO & SOUNDSCAPE (PLEASE READ!) The Timpani Solo is a unique opportunity for a promising percussionist in your band. If you feel you do not have a band member ready for this challenge, perhaps invite a more experienced player from another band or a guest tutor/local percussion teacher/artist to perform the piece with you. I also strongly encourage you to download one of the three videos that I have created to accompany the solo from: https://www.jodieblackshaw.com/earthshine Show the video to your students and then consider what kind of subtle soundscape they could build around the timpani solo using nothing other than body percussion and their voices. Here are some ideas to get you started (see short videos on webpage for each of these sounds): *scrape finger nails over music stand/folder
*rub palms together
*rub thighs with palms
*whisper the words “Moon” and “Earthshine” with an emphasis on “oo” and “shi” sounds *create “wind” sounds using mouth and interrupt with fingers
Pre-recorded Sound Waves You can also listen and/or use ACTUAL space sounds as collated by NASA (this link is also on the Earthshine webpage at jodieblackshaw.com): https://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/features/halloween_sounds.html My personal favourite is “Whistler Waves”. It is recommended that you start playing the track with the Timpani solo and have students contribute to the soundscape using any of the above (or pick your own NASA space sounds and use them in a similar way!). This option is shown in the score.
TERRACED DYNAMICS You will notice the use of terraced dynamics in this piece. Consider introducing this concept during rehearsal or with the ‘Know your stuff’ material to establish a whole band and sectional concept of what is required to achieve the dynamics p, mp, mf and f.
MELODIC ALTERATION You may notice that the third phrase of the melody is slightly altered into 2 versions. This is to cater for instrument differences and ensure they remain in a comfortable playing range. See example below:
AUXILIARY PERCUSSION 1 This is an original take on the ‘cup song’ in triple meter. It’s a 4 bar pattern using both left and right hands. It’s great if you have several inexperienced percussionists who can work as a team. They can learn and play this part together. All they will need is a sturdy plastic cup, a table and this chart:

T
KNOW YOUR STUFF
T
It is highly recommended that you complete the 15 exercises provided as the supplementary material entitled ‘Know you Stuff’ (no. 16 & 17 are the full melody). These exercises introduce every student to the rhythm and pitch material used in the main theme of this piece. No. 1 introduces all of the notes required to play the piece (the notes marked optional in some parts are there for playing purposes but are not used in the piece itself). Be sure to have your students ready with fingering charts! It is also recommended that you introduce the students to the concept of conducting triple meter in 1 (1 in a bar) with these exercises to prepare them for the piece. This will pre-empt your introduction of compound time. You may also take this opportunity to introduce the concept of modes. Earthshine is written in the Aeolian mode of E♭ major.
