Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 35th Annual Golf Classic dinner, proudly supporting the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF). We are delighted to have you on the green tonight, celebrating the exceptional achievements of our Murphy Scholars and the remarkable generosity of the DMSF community. As we tee off this evening, we are excited to share that you are part of one of the largest charitable golf events in the country, featuring seven prestigious courses on the North Shore and hosting a combined total of 600 golfers and dinner guests.
Thanks to your participation in this event, we raise over $2 million annually, which helps more than 500 Murphy Scholars attend highly selective college-preparatory high schools in the Chicago area and esteemed boarding schools across the nation. Your involvement in the Golf Classic is a hole-in-one for DMSF, allowing us to provide not only tuition assistance but also vital programs such as tutoring, mentoring, college counseling, and enriching summer opportunities like our caddie program.
In the fall, we welcome a new class of Murphy Scholars who, with your support, are set up for a successful journey from high school to college and beyond. They embark on their academic careers with an impressive array of opportunities and robust support.
Thank you once again for being part of the 35th Annual Golf Classic! Your commitment and investment in the hardworking Murphy Scholars we serve is truly above par, and we are grateful for your support.
Cindy Hallums, Chief Executive Officer Molly Carroll, Board Member and Golf Classic Co-Chair Chris Klingenstein, Board Member and Golf Classic Co-ChairJose Lemus, Class of 2024 Murphy Scholar Speaker
Jose Lemus is a proud graduate of Marist High School, Class of 2024, where he cherished the opportunity to form lasting friendships within a welcoming community. He found his passions outside of the classroom in music and boxing, pursuits he hopes to continue competitively at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
Jose caddied at Briarwood Country Club, an experience that further shaped his personal and professional growth. He credits DMSF with providing opportunities that were otherwise beyond his reach, including the chance to attend a private high school and to caddie regularly, which ultimately led to him receiving the prestigious Evans Scholarship. This scholarship has opened the door for him to attend UIUC. Jose aspires to pursue a career in engineering with a focus on automotive technology, along with a minor in real estate. As an incoming Evans Scholar, Jose looks forward to joining a new community, forging new friendships, and exploring his personal and academic interests. He is eager to discover more about himself and his potential career paths along the way.
Throughout his high school journey, Jose was actively involved in various DMSF programs. He participated in an Affinity Group, mentorship program, and college trips, and he was a dedicated member of the Murphy Caddie Program. His caddie experience spanned both commuting efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and the residential caddie program. One of his fondest memories from the residential caddie program was gathering his dorm peers to create music together. This experience not only showcased his musical talents but also fostered deep, meaningful connections among his peers.
“Being a Murphy Scholar is to have dedication and passion for the education given to me while setting an example for future Scholars and inspiring them the same way Dmsf has inspired every one of us.”
Jose attributes much of his success to the support and opportunities provided by DMSF. The organization not only facilitated his academic and extracurricular development but also inspired him to strive for excellence and to give back to others. For Jose, being a Murphy Scholar means embodying determination, enthusiasm, respect, and hard work. It means being a leader, a door-opener for others, and a bearer of the values and opportunities that DMSF champions. He shares, “Being a Murphy Scholar is to have dedication and passion for the education given to me while setting an example for future Scholars and inspiring them the same way DMSF has inspired every one of us.”
Jose Lemus is a testament to the transformative power of education and community support, and DMSF looks forward to witnessing the meaningful impact he’ll make both in college and beyond.
