Caring • Helping • Giving Denton Benefit League was founded 49 years ago by a group of outstanding and caring ladies who wanted to make the Denton County community a better place to live and work. What started out as a small group of women has grown to over 237 members, all of whom are active volunteers in local organizations. Collectively, the members volunteer thousands of hours each year throughout the community.

Sergeant Major Bill Shoemaker My hero is my dad. He was raised on a farm near Winnsboro, Texas. Dad was drafted and following high school graduation, reported to basic training, declining a basketball scholarship. His unit became part of the occupational forces. Dad returned home in 1946, enlisted in the Army Reserves, and joined his brother’s accounting firm in Marshall, TX. In 1949, he joined the 49th Armored Division of the Army National Guard. The unit was mobilized for active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis and spent time at Fort Polk. Dad served until his retirement in February 1987 – a total of 41.5 years. Dad served our church, First Baptist Marshall, as a deacon and church treasurer for several years. He was a Master Mason, a member of the Knights Templar, and a Shriner. Dad served the Marshall Lodge as Worshipful Master and served the district as District Deputy Grand Master. My parents were married almost 46 years when Dad passed in 1997. My dad was a good man who loved his Lord, loved his family, and was proud to serve his country. Honored by Patrice Frisby

HONORING OUR HEROES
My hero is my mother, Katie McArtor Fullerton, who embraced the many changes that she experienced during a long and full life. As a young woman, she rode on horseback to teach in a one room school. Although she was tiny, she managed the students successfully although they had previously run off a male teacher. She married my father, Willard James Fullerton, in 1928 and they were full partners as they worked through the Great Depression to operate a dairy farm and rear four children. I was the last to arrive and was fortunate to experience my mother’s endless love and encouragement and her great enthusiasm for life. She volunteered for many good causes in her community and repeatedly chaired her church’s bazaar when she was in her eighties. She was a cancer survivor. The day I took her home from the hospital after surgery was primary election day. She insisted on going to vote before going home because “I’ve never missed an election in my life and I’m not going to start now!” Her dedication to her family and to her community and her positive attitude provide a shining example of a life well-lived. intelligent man who made a difference everywhere he went. After traveling the world as a quality control inspector, one of his professional accomplishments was tapping into a volcano for the steam to run a power plant in Indonesia. Ted was a lifetime member of Cleburne Elks Lodge #811, serving in all chairs including the Exalted Ruler or as he called it, the “Exhausted Rooster.” He also served as Master Mason (Scottish Rite) of Freemasonry, Ft. Worth Chapter, and at Glen Rose Blue Lodge. He belonged to American Legion (Austin), was an avid volunteer at Operation Blessing and at Alcoholics Anonymous in Cleburne. While in AA he changed many lives. He even saved a few who either tried to or were contemplating suicide. He blessed many people with his positive attitude, dedicated faith, contagious personality, and love for those around him. Ted left this earth on February 13, 2022. He left a hole bigger than most can fill; this world will never be the same!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE 2022 DBL GRANT RECIPIENTS!
TWU'S FRONTIERS PROGRAM Nationally, less than 10% of students who have been in foster care graduate from a university, but with help from DBL, Texas Woman’s University is improving that statistic one student at a time. TWU’s Frontiers Program supports students who have aged out of foster care and helps them navigate college in an effort to improve their chances of success. The program recently received funds from DBL, enabling 15 students to purchase textbooks. “Without the support from DBL, these students would be unable to continue their coursework,” said Amy O’Keefe, Executive Director, Campus Alliance for Resource Education (CARE).

DENTON BELL BAND The Denton Bell Band was happy to learn that DBL has given us funds to replace some of our roll charts. The ones we have are tattered and patched from over-use. The Bell Band is currently shut down because of COVID, but when we were doing our annual tours, we used those charts on the road every year for nine performances in three days. Over a period of several years, we performed in over 100 cities and towns in Texas. We are looking forward to the time that we can perform again, and we are grateful to DBL for helping us look in that direction. KIWANIS CHILDREN'S CLINIC Since 1925, the Denton Kiwanis Children's Clinic has continuously offered free medical, dental, and prescription services to the underserved children of Denton and northern Denton county. Without the continued and generous support from organizations such as Denton Benefit League, the clinic would be unable to offer help to children who may otherwise go untreated. Thank you Denton Benefit League for your support!

VNA Ann’s Haven is so grateful for our partnership with Denton Benefit League! Together we are providing compassionate end-of-life care to patients in Denton. This year, the wonderful gift funded by DBL provided new technology to ensure all patient data is updated and available in real time so the needs of patients and their families are met in a timely manner and that the entire interdisciplinary team has access to full details relating to the patient’s care. With our deep roots in Denton, DBL and VNA Ann’s Haven are helping those who need it most.

OUR DAILY BREAD Our Daily Bread's pantry coordinator and receiving volunteers are very thankful to Denton Benefit League for the grant allocation of the Vestil Electric 3,000 lb load pallet with scale. This electric pallet allows all receiving staff to work effectively without the physical labor of pushing uphill, lifting heavy items, and loading items to weigh the donations on site. We receive in-kind contributions Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. from many private and corporate donors which allows us to care for our guests at an affordable cost. This electric pallet will make this exhausting job much easier and less stressful. Thank you to the community of Denton Benefit League's underwriters and donors.
