What a way to finish a high school career!

Argyle senior wrestler Cullen Davee added to what has been an incredible year of excellence in athletics for the Eagles. Davee capped an undefeated season with a Class 5A state championship in the 170-pound weight class on Friday, April 23 at the UIL State Wrestling Championship at the Berry Center in Cypress. It also completed a decorated wrestling career at Argyle as he finished as a three-time state medalist.

Davee (18-0) earned a pin in his first match and then won 6-4 and 4-1 in the championship against Kale Farrington from Canyon Randall. Davee finished third in 2020 and 2019. It marked Argyle’s first title since Heath Roth won in 2019.

Davee’s teammate Jax Ernest, a junior, also had an impressive showing and reached the medal stand. Ernest finished fifth in the 182-pound class and won three consecutive matches after falling in the quarterfinals.

“I am so proud of how both of them competed this year,” Argyle wrestling coach Bobby Morse said. “Cullen has fallen one match short for the past two years to finish third. This year, he battled through an unprecedented and chaotic season as well as a senior injury to claim the top spot on the podium.

“Jax had a tough loss in the quarterfinals, but came back to win three straight matches to claim his spot on the podium in fifth,” Morse added. “These guys have both shown the grit and determination that it takes to achieve success in wrestling.”
