Afrom Message Dr. Telena Wright, Argyle ISD Superintendent
AISD will continue this year with full day Pre-Kindergarten classes for eligible students. Pre-Kindergarten provides an excellent learning opportunity for students. that instruction must be differentiated to meet their needs. Teachers are role models for students, both at school and away from school. I expect AISD to open with approximately 3,500 students this year; the growth is projected to be approximately 15%. In June 2019, the District had 3,105 students. Meanwhile, forensic science will be taught at high school this year for the first time. Voters in AISD passed a $166,000,000 bond in May 2017. In October 2018, learning spaces for 300 students through the addition of 12 classrooms were added at the current high school. This last August a second elementary school, West Elementary, opened in the Harvest area. s parents, we want nothing more than to keep our kids safe and healthy. But these days, it feels like our eyes and ears are on the lookout for too many threats than we can keep track of, whether it be online predators, safety concerns at school, the authority figures they put their trust into, and even who they are hanging out with when we aren’t around.
Those concerns are overwhelming because it’s a lot to keep track of, and we didn’t have to worry about the same concerns growing up. The biggest piece of advice our parents gave us was Stranger Danger, which may have worked like a charm 30 years ago but sadly falls way short in today’s world. We’re not going to lie; keeping our kids safer takes hard work and diligence. But here are 7 tips to get you started.
Realize that Stranger Danger isn’t good enough anymore Your children must realize danger can come in many forms. While they should be mindful of strangers, not all strangers are bad people. In fact, many predators these days are people they know and would normally feel comfortable with. To keep them safe, teach them what is and is not safe behavior. If something doesn’t feel right, they should trust their gut. Keep them educated Not only should your children know their name, your contact information, important phone numbers, addresses, etc., but they should be educated on the law, what is acceptable behavior versus what is over the line, how to protect their privacy online, how to be more aware of their surroundings, and yes … what sex is and how to properly understand their bodies. Monitor social media and who they are texting Nothing is off limits when it comes to your child’s privacy and safety online. Social media, and the Internet in general, can be a dangerous place, and your child needs to be aware of that. Parents should set house rules and have access to any
passwords their child has for online accounts or cell phones. You should also consider having a list of sites your child visits regularly. Limit your child’s time online and what sites they are allowed to visit, and install content blockers on all PCs. Maintain an open line of communication Your child should feel like they can talk to their parents about anything, even the most sensitive of subjects, without fear of getting in trouble or not being taken seriously. Talk openly and often, and consider using role play to go over various scenarios they could face. Get involved You should always be aware of what is going on in your child’s life, beyond just asking questions about their day at the dinner table. Go to baseball or cheerleading practice, volunteer at school in Watchdog programs, the PTA, etc., attend other school functions, or follow up with teachers and babysitters. Predators can’t attack if parents are involved. Educate yourself There are plenty of resources online to help parents become more educated on the dangers their children will likely experience
on a daily basis and how to spot predators. Knowing what questions you should ask and how to anticipate potential dangers will go a long way in protecting your child. Teach them to travel in groups Whether they are walking home from school, going to the mall, or even to a friend’s house, your children should always travel with at least one or two other friends. If they are stuck in a position where they must walk alone, ensure they have a cell phone and that they are talking or staying in contact with you until they reach where they are supposed to be.

To put Argyle’s streak of championships
What else would you call what the Argyle girls basketball team has created over the last five years? Since losing in the state tournament in 2014, the Lady Eagles rattled off five straight state titles wins – including last month’s 49-41 victory over Sour Lake Hardin-Jefferson. Keeping that streak alive seemed improbable coming into the year, but at this point, it’s a safe bet this program will be at the top of the Class

With 15 members, including six new members, our 2019-2020 group is full of talent and ready to share their love of music with the community. At the end of last year, we were fortunate enough to release our debut album titled “In The Trenches.” This album, which is available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Youtube Music, is a culmination of two years of hard work and dedication towards musical excellence and passionate performing. The goal of our album was to share music that brings hope to other people, especially others who often feel alone or without someone to turn to in a time of need. Please support our amazing students and their passion for music by streaming and downloading our album. In addition to our album, and with the help of Greg Royar and Josh Bates, we were able to release two music videos this summer for our songs “Everglow” and “I’ll Be There.” We had so much fun recording these videos, and you can view them on our Facebook Page or our Youtube Channel. A Message From AMS Principal
Mr. Gibson
W
elcome back to Argyle middle school for the 2019-2020 school year. I know this is going to be a fantastic year of learning for our students. We look forward to seeing all of their happy faces. This is my 14th year in the district, and I am beginning my 11th year as the middle school principal. Argyle is a fantastic place to work, and Argyle middle school is filled with professionals ready to serve. Our staff is dedicated to working with students and parents to provide an outstanding educational experience. The past three school years, we have had the pleasure of operating out of a new building, which is the first phase of a future high school. As we begin our fourth year in this building, there will be many noticeable changes to the campus complexion. Parents will notice the front

entrance by the band hall will be closed from the first day of school. Students will use the front door and not have the second entrance as an option. Throughout the year, we will begin to see the auditorium and fine arts section go up. The administration area will have an addition to make it house administrators and counselors for a high school. An additional classroom wing will be built along with a field house, competition gym, and wrestling room. Practice fields and a band practice area will all be constructed over the next two years. So what does this mean for those of us having school while the construction is taking place? It means we are going to need to be flexible and think outside the box. The days of saying, “we’ve never done it like that before” are over. The growth and construction we will be experiencing will
be a challenge. But challenges are fun to tackle, and we look forward to taking on this challenge. Therefore, the middle school has two more years in this building before switching with the high school and moving to that location in 2021. This school year will bring with it an advisory period that will be new for our students. This is a 30-minute period between the sixth and seventh period that will be used for advisory lessons, tutorials, silent reading, or playing outside. This gives students and teachers more of an opportunity to give and receive assistance than the previous schedule allowed. We are all so excited to get this year rolling. Go Eagles!

Students spent hours working inside and outside on music, dance, marching, building relationships, and most importantly, acquiring lifelong positive memories. We are excited about the 2019 season. The marching band will be attending the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Marching Invitational, Sounds of Springtown, UIL Region 2 Contest, and will wrap up the year at The Duncanville Marching Invitational. We are spreading our wings this year and competing against not only the best in Class 4A, but we will be competing alongside the best 5A and 6A groups in the state, as well. The Argyle Band will be premiering part of “Into the Light” at halftime of the upcoming Argyle vs. Stephenville football game. We hope you will join us for a performance this fall.

Tips on how to start teaching your kids

any of us vaguely remember the day mom and dad first grabbed an old mason jar from the cabinet or bought a cute piggy bank from the dollar store and began taking the first steps toward teaching us about money. It was a critical time in our lives as we learned what money is, the value of it, and the importance of saving. Looking back, those memories should also be a perfect reminder that it’s never too early to teach our own children. But where do we start? Is it literally as simple as grabbing a piggy bank and a few quarters and nickels? The short answer is yes, but there are so many other tips and tricks that can make the process easy for both yourself and the kiddos. In no particular order, here are seven tips on how to start teaching your kids about money:
Encourage saving

elcome, new and returning Eagles, to the 2019-2020 school year! I am so honored and excited to serve all of you as the principal of Argyle Intermediate! The staff and I have been working hard to ensure that this year will be a great one. I look forward to getting to know each of our students and their amazing families, and I want to allow each of you to get to know me as well. My husband and I live in Bartonville, and we have six children (three girls and three boys whose ages range from 15 to 28), and two sweet, little grandsons. Like many educators, I love school, and I love to learn. I completed my bachelor’s degree at Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, my master’s degree at The University of Southern Mississippi, and my doctoral degree at William Carey University. the elementary and secondary level, and after eight years in the classroom, I served as a high school assistant principal for three years. Since then, I have spent the last five years as an elementary school principal and would have to say that I have truly found my passion. I am so lucky to have a job that I love in such an amazing school district! I believe that any effective school successfully maintains frequent, clear, and open communication. So, while you can expect to hear from us in a variety of methods, we also want to hear from you! As members of the community and our AIS family, please know that we value your input on how to make AIS the best it can be for your child. Your suggestions, comments, concerns, and praises are ALWAYS welcome as we are committed to our vision of providing an exceptional education.
We look forward to the continued partnership and support of our community. Our school theme this year is “Let the Adventure Begin!” We will focus on adventures through literacy, field trips, and other school-wide events that will encourage our students to take risks and enjoy learning in an environment where they are loved and supported by some pretty excellent educators. Additionally, we will be implementing the Ron Clark House system as a school-wide incentive program. It’s truly going to be a fun and exciting year. There will be many opportunities to share the fun with all of our amazing parents and families. We look forward to seeing you all take part in the excitement. Great things are happening at Argyle Intermediate School, and we are excited to share it with you. The 2019-2020 academic year is going to be outstanding!

Off to a great start!
AHS Tennis starts the Fall Season!
Following our state run for girls doubles last spring, our entire tennis team was ready to get back to work for the fall. On July 24th, we began freshman tryouts for the Argyle Tennis Team, and the following Monday, the entire team was officially back to work preparing for the season! After a week of two-a-days, drill sessions, and match play, the Varsity and JV tennis teams were made, and we jumped into competition. For the first time in three years, the team began playing matches the Monday following our first week back. The schedule this past week consisted of seven matches in four towns. Four of the matches were back to back
with an hour rest in between. Over the past week, the tennis team has spent over 33 hours playing in competition against Class 4A and 5A schools across Texas, including Wills Point, Hallsville, and Van to the East followed by Hereford High From West Texas. We ended the week with a 5-2 record and will begin again next week playing four matches over five days. This season we have five seniors who are ready to begin their final year of high school by competing at the highest level possible! We play many home matches this season! Cheer on your Argyle Tennis Team, FREE OF CHARGE! We look forward to seeing you on the courts! Go Eagles! -Coach Tobi Jordan

aise your hand if you’re still having to “gently” pull your screaming and groggy child out of bed so they can get dressed and make it to school on time. Wow; that’s a lot of hands. For many parents, the struggle is
real, especially during the first couple of weeks of the school year when our kiddos are still used to lazy summer days of staying up late and sleeping in. Getting up early for school is difficult for any kid or parent, and while you probably should have introduced a new sleep routine a week or so before school started, all is not lost. Many of the same tips still apply now that school has started.
Adjust Slowly Once you know how much sleep your child needs, you may be thinking the answer to making up ground is to enforce a ridiculously early bedtime right off the bat. On the contrary, a solid tip is to work them into the new pattern gradually – start with moving the time up by 20 or 30 minutes, then push it up
Here are a few you can try right now to give your kids the rest they need and

teenagers need roughly 8-10 hours of sleep versus a preschooler, who needs 10-13 hours of quality sleep.
Don’t Let Them Nap After School Try to avoid allowing your child to take a nap after school, as it will only make going to bed later that much more difficult. You can avoid the midday snooze by keeping them active with sports, putting a priority on getting their homework done, or even putting them to work with a few chores around the house.
Get Into A Routine Creating a routine that your child can count on every night will help them wind down and mentally prepare for bed. A perfect example for younger kids is having them take a bath, brush their teeth, get their pajamas on, and read a book. You can even have fun with this and create a bedtime chart,

them talk about their day.
Limit Electronic Screen Time Our kids are used to watching TV, playing video games, or talking to friends on their phones. This extra screen time, especially right before bedtime, makes it harder for them to fall asleep. Eliminate screen time at least an hour before their new bedtime, or better yet, immediately after dinner.
Move Everything Else Up, Too Another way to help get the kids into bed earlier once school has started is to move all the busy household chores up an hour or so. For example, have them do their homework as soon as they get home from school, so it’s out of the way, then try having dinner as a family at 5:30 instead of 6:30 p.m. You can also adjust your own bedtime, so your child realizes it’s time for everyone to go to bed. This creates a calmer mood throughout the house as bedtime approaches.

Want to send a flock of Flamingos to your friends’ yard? Go to our website, make a small donation, and we will take care of the rest. The KAB board has decided to initiate its first-ever High School Scholarship, so check with your counselor to learn more, or check our website this fall for details. We thank all the students who entered the “Don’t Mess With Texas” Art Contest. We have chosen local winners and will honor them this fall with awards at a school board meeting. Have you ever seen anyone littering in Argyle? Download the Litterer app from Don’t Mess With Texas, and the next time you see someone littering, make a quick report. Just have the Texas license plate number, answer a few questions, and the registered owner will receive a friendly letter and a trash bag for their vehicle. Thank you! We hope you enjoyed seeing the American Flags along 377 this summer as we partnered with local businesses, the
Denton Morning Rotary Club and the Boy Scouts. Look on Patriots Day and Veterans Day for more flags waving! See our website to donate one from your family or business, and soon there will be flags everywhere in Argyle! Keep Argyle Beautiful has a few more “spots” to adopt around town. We will provide the bags, gloves, vests and “grabbers,” just get together and pick up litter along your designated “spot” along the road. We would like to thank the following who have adopted a spot already: The Marlow family, The Tart family, Argyle Lions Club, Argyle Police, Argyle Area Democrats, All About Babies, and YMSL. We always welcome guests of all ages to attend our monthly meetings on the 2nd Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Argyle Firehouse on FM 407. We hope to meet you soon!
