Cancer A W A R E N E S S

ctober is one of those months that brings so many things to mind, don’t you think? You’ve got pumpkin carving opportunities galore with the kiddos, sweater weather, firepits, Halloween candy by the truck load, and many other opportunities to create priceless memories.

At this point, I’m just sad the month is almost over. One of the bigger things that should spring to mind, too, is that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Not only that, but how can I – and, well, you too – contribute? Breast Cancer Awareness month is more than just a time to think about loved ones who are continuing to fight or have lost their battle. It’s a yearly campaign that educates people, both men and women, about the importance of early breast screening and early testing. I am currently watching my dear friend, who is only 39 years old, fight this very battle. She was lucky and it was detected while at an early screening. That’s the blessing in all of this. Not to mention, she knows she isn’t fighting this alone. This disease has taken

so many of our loved ones way too early in life, and there are countless non-profit organizations that want to help find a cure. Even numerous clients of ours, like Buckets & Bows Maid Service, have joined in this fight. My very own friend, Debbie Sardone, started Cleaning for a Reason, a non-profit organization, 12 years ago through her Buckets & Bows company. Through this non-profit, it gives the gift of free house cleaning to women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer. She has inspired other local businesses, like MaidPro Denton, to help educate people in joining us in the fight against Breast Cancer. In this issue, information on screening and testing will be provided. Read these important facts, my friends, and let’s join together in early detection.

I bet organizing the garage is not on your list of fun fall activities. Even so, this is the perfect time to get it done. The weather is beginning to cool down, so we won’t roast while we do outdoor chores. It’s time to roll up those sleeves and start decluttering the garage. hen it comes to deciding where we want to take the family for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night, many of us are creatures of habit. It’s so much easier to pull into a familiar chain restaurant or a local spot we’ve fallen in love with than spend forever finding something new that everyone will enjoy. We’re not suggesting there’s anything wrong with that, but there are so many other options to take advantage of in Denton County – many of which have been right under our noses the entire time. Below are our Top 10 list of local restaurants you need to try today.

pasta, calzones, and sandwiches. BURGERS & BRATS

Foodie Friday DFW: Carvao Prime Brazilian Steak House

Carvao Prime

BRAZILIAN STEAK HOUSE

S

ince Carvao opened in the Fall of 2015, I’ve been a huge fan of this locally-owned Brazilian steakhouse

and have enjoyed many fabulous meals

with them, including our team’s Christmas Party this pas year in one of their private banquet rooms.

Owner, Paulo Novaes, is a long-time

resident of Flower Mound who is thrilled to be sharing recipes he’s worked on his whole life with the Flower Mound

community. Part of what makes Paulo’s

recipes so unique is his use of a charcoal

grill, which gives the food a different taste than most other Brazilian steakhouses. (Fun Fact: ‘Carvao’ actually means ‘charcoal’ in Portuguese.)

As is typical with Brazilian steakhouses, restaurant patrons begin their meal at the salad bar which has over 60 hot &

cold items to choose from. Some of our favorites include the grilled pineapple, the cheese and cold cut selection, and

(most of all) their lobster bisque which is just simply incredible.

Once you’ve loaded up at the salad bar,

you head back to your table and flip your card to green which initiates the parade of incredibly-prepared and seasoned

If you’ve managed to save room for dessert (which we highly advise you do), some of our absolute favorites are their Cheesecake (which comes served flaming) and the Creme Brulee. I truly believe their Creme Brulee is the best in town. Paired with a cup of their smooth-roasted coffee, it’s the perfect end to a meal. In addition to their main dining area, Carvao also has a fantastic bar where you can enjoy drinks before and/or after your meal. They also have a gorgeous wine room which features over 100 labels that you can choose to pair with your meal. And they have a wonderful selection of after-dinner drinks as well. And as I mentioned earlier, they also have two fantastic private dining areas which are great for your special events including holiday parties, rehearsal dinner, client events, happy hours, etc. There’s no cost to use the rooms and they can be set up however you need them - to include with tech equipment so you can project videos or presentations for your guests to view. We’re grateful to have Paulo as a local restaurant owner as well as a friend. And we look forward to many delicious meals with them!

early detection of breast cancer in many women and have saved countless lives.

However, some medical entities argue that we don’t need to be conducting as many mammograms over a woman’s lifetime as we are. Here are some of the latest recommendations:

• The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends that

Now a new debate has been fueled that argues that for every death prevented, there are three to four women “overdiagnosed”. That means that the mammogram pinpointed a suspicious area that required extra tests or a biopsy, but turned out not to be cancer. Good, right? Well…according to the study, this causes the patient stress and anxiety

Let’s check the facts. In a research study published in the

journal Cancer in 2017, three different groups of women were assessed: • Group 1 – participants had a

mammogram every year from age 40 to age 84.

• Group 2 – participants had a

mammogram every year from age 45 to age 54, then mammograms every other year from age 55 to age 79.

• Group 3 – had a mammogram every other year from age 50 to age 74.

Here is what the study found: • Group 1 - annual screening reduced mortality by 39.6%.

• Group 2 - scheduled screenings reduced mortality by 30.8%.

• Group 3 - scheduled screenings reduced mortality by 23.2%.

• For those wondering about the false positives, although there a larger number of mammograms conducted from Group 1 to Group 3, the number of false positives for each group hovered roughly around 8%. If the goal is to prevent the most deaths from breast cancer, the annual mammogram starting at age 40 is the best bet for all women according to this study. Here are some other things that are important to prevent breast cancer: • Know your family history – have a talk with your family about medical conditions. If other members of your family have had breast cancer, you, too are at greater risk. • Keep a healthy lifestyle – obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol use (1-2 drinks/ day), and an unhealthy diet (refined foods, meats, saturated fats, sugars) all contribute to breast cancer. • Perform breast self-exams in the shower. • Keep to your regular OB/GYN exams as well as scheduled mammograms. The best thing to do is to consult your doctor about your risks and what he or she believes is the best path forward.

Ask The Expert: Home Design

Why You Need To

PARTNER with a

Residential Designer

W

e meet with homeowners all the time at the ML Group, and one thing we hear the most is they really want something different. They no longer want a house that looks the same as the one next door, and in some cases, they don’t feel like it speaks to their style anymore.

Maybe you’re thinking the same thing: You bought your house 12 or 13 years ago, and you love it. But over the last eight years, you’ve noticed its lack of functionality and curb appeal – your master closet is narrow, there’s not enough room to entertain, and there’s too much space being taken up in the hallway that could have been used to give yourself a bigger laundry room or patio. Being the residential architects and designers we are, solving these pain points with a custom home is right up our ally. Here are 4 reasons why you need to partner with a residential designer: 1. You get what you want and need: Because you have your own designer, the entire experience is customizable. You have control, everything is crafted around your budget, and you’re not locked into one particular style. Go crazy and create your own style from scratch! 2. Having a designer melts the stress away: A residential designer’s priority is YOU. At the ML Group, we get to know our clients, and we take the time 30 | ARGYLE LIVING

| OCTOBER 2018

to listen to their dreams and ideas. That takes stress off your plate in a process that might have felt a little overwhelming at first.

3. Your designer knows their stuff:

If you’re taking the plunge into the custom building world, you need someone in your corner who is

knowledgeable. For example, I’ve

owned a home building company in the past. I know what’s realistic, how far to push the envelope, and how and where to keep costs low.

4. Residential designers are problemsolvers: Many clients have an idea of what they want, but they don’t know how to materialize that or put it into

words other than the 40 or 50 pictures they found on Pinterest. The ML

Group can put that puzzle together for you.

Having an experienced designer in your corner is the most valuable asset in your quest to design the perfect home – one that we promise will be unique to your style and way of living, call us today.
