Following Through On RESOLUTIONS
T
he holiday season is long gone, and hopefully, that means no more cake, candy, and tables loaded with food we shouldn’t be eating. I mean, don’t get me wrong, just the sound of all that is making me hungry. But now is the time to start thinking about what we can do to better ourselves — and start anew. Naturally, a great place to start is by recapturing your fitness goals and being healthy. But it also goes beyond that. Typical resolutions that we should all follow through with this time of year include spending less time on work and more with family and friends, living life to the fullest, getting organized, and learning a new skill or hobby. Many people use the flip to the new year as a chance to clean the slate financially — get out of debt, save money, etc. These are all great ideas, and it can be easy for many of us to simply say, “Yeah, I’m going to focus on all of that.” My answer is that instead of biting off more than you can chew, pick one — maybe two — New Year’s resolutions and put all of your time and energy into meeting those goals. You’ll be a lot better off and more likely to follow through. Our family here at Murray Media Group only wants the best for you, your family, and your friends. We are coming off the worst year of our lifetime, and it’s easy to carry all of that yuck into the next year. But don’t! This is our opportunity to start anew — to create the best year yet! I believe we will.

Dentistry: Ask The Expert
NEW SMILES For A New Year by Dr. Matt Artho, Owner of Country Lakes Family Dental
I
t’s a new year, and as I reflect on the intimate time spent over the holidays with family and friends, celebrating the season and appreciating those cherished moments of joy and giving, I can only sum it all up in four simple words: I ate too much. Yes, once again, we start the new year off with resolutions to shake off those habits so easily picked up during the time of merriness and cheer. Now, with the holidays behind us, we can focus on some new ways to improve ourselves, even our oral health. Here are some dental ideas for how you can start the year with a great smile.
Every good resolution starts with a solid foundation. With your oral health, it’s back to the basics of brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits. Brushing after meals, or at least twice a day is a common understanding, but flossing can be a tricky habit to start. Some tips for flossing can include setting up a reminder in your phone or creating a progress chart. It may even be helpful to place floss next to your sink as a daily reminder to floss.
As you start off 2020 with new resolutions for a healthy, happier you, make sure to keep your oral health as a part of that package. Happy New Year and Happy Smiling!
When it comes to improving the aesthetics of your smile, there is a wide spectrum of dental treatment that is available. If you have never tried whitening, this is a simple and easy way to enhance the look of your teeth. If you have ever considered straightening your teeth, this may be the year to consider orthodontic or Invisalign treatment.

Aerial yoga, also referred to as anti-gravity yoga, originated in New York and moves yoga from the ground to the air. Aerial yoga may at first have seemed like a fad, but the concept has caught on and is practiced in several countries. Hailed for its many benefits, aerial yoga frees your body from the restraint of the flat, hard floor allowing for more fluid movements. It combines anti-gravity asana (yoga poses), acrobatics, Pilates, and dance, and is favored for safe alignment, because it provides more length in your spine. photo courtesy of Urban Vybe Social Media Page
In a busy world filled with technology, kids’ soccer games, and stressful work deadlines, sleep can be considered a luxury experience. n 2008, Emily Lites was delighted to welcome the birth of her brother, Jude. He was her first and only sibling. Jude had suffered a massive
bilateral stroke in utero but seemed fine when he greeted this world. Things changed about three months later, however, when he began having seizures. Ultimately, Jude suffered from epilepsy, cerebral palsy, scoliosis, and blindness.
16 | ARGYLE LIVING | JANUARY 2021
www.ArgyleLivingMagazine.com
Emily all too often found herself in hospital waiting rooms with her family to support sweet Jude. Just nine years old, she felt these places were very boring, upsetting, and even scary. Surely other children must feel the same way. Emily had an idea and asked her mother if she could do something to make both hospital stays and hospital waits a little easier for the many other kids in similar situations. Emily came up with the idea of filling shoebox-sized boxes with small toys and activity items, such as coloring books and crayons, stuffed animals, card games, stickers, and more. She made sure not to include edible items, nor any that could be choking hazards. The boxes would give both hospital patients and their waiting room siblings something to do — and something to smile about. With that idea, Emily’s Smile Boxes was born.
grew into a community effort. With her
Emily’s first delivery contained 12 smile boxes carried in a small red wagon to Medical City in Dallas, where her brother had been treated. She put together the boxes herself, including decorating them with her artistry. Eventually, a cheerful sun and colorful rainbow became part of their logo. Soon, Emily’s friends and family pitched in, and it

determination, perseverance, and desire to spread some joy into even more
children’s lives, Emily’s Smile Boxes became a nonprofit organization.
From that first delivery to Medical City, Emily expanded her distribution to
hospitals such as Cook Children’s, Scottish Rite, and a host of others.
“Ironically, until I was 15 years old, I wasn’t able to visit children in these hospitals,”
Emily reflected. “Instead, I would leave the smile boxes at the front desk or nurses’
station for hospital personnel to deliver.” Assembling these thoughtful boxes
eventually transitioned into Smile Box
making parties. These are hosted events
where groups get together to decorate and fill the boxes while enjoying each other’s company, refreshments, and knowing on children’s faces. When a company,
organization, neighborhood, or group
commits to helping, representatives from
Emily’s Smile Boxes send them boxes, logos, and everything they need to build the
complete smile box. Many groups assemble 250 to 400 boxes during these parties! One box costs about $10, so the
organization raises donations through
GoFundMe, individuals and businesses,
and sponsored events such as carnivals,
casino nights, car washes, holiday-related affairs, 5K runs, and more.
“These events are oriented around the
importance of community service while
having fun,” Emily said. “There have been schools, churches, businesses, girl and boy scout troops, and others that hold their own Emily’s Smile Box events. At
these events, you can find activities like face painting and bounce houses.”
Her desire to help children is so intense that when she was 11, Emily entered a
pageant after hearing that the prize was a $1,000 giveaway to a nonprofit of the
winner’s choice. She won and added the winnings to Emily’s Smile Boxes. www.ArgyleLivingMagazine.com
BRIGHTENED THE HOSPITAL STAYS OF MANY CHILDREN SINCE 2008 Sadly, Emily lost her brother Jude in 2016, when he was 7 years, 7 months, and 7 days old. Emily’s good deeds continued, with the added objective of honoring Jude’s memory. Fast forward to today. Emily graduated from the University of Alabama this winter with a degree in psychology and plans to continue her education in hopes of becoming a physician’s assistant. “My love for the medical community came from spending so much time around hospital staff and with Jude’s nurses, who were angels to my family,” Emily explained. Emily’s Smile Boxes has grown by leaps and bounds. Emily and many volunteers still deliver boxes to hospitals and send them to homes, too. They have distributed over 22,000 boxes to every state in the U.S., Canada, and Jamaica. Their efforts have raised over half a million dollars, with no intention of stopping. There’s no denying that Emily’s Smile Boxes have brightened the hospital stays of many children since 2008. “I want to get the next generation involved in giving,” Emily said. “Always remember that one person can make a difference!” To find out more, please visit, www.EmilysSmileBoxes.com JANUARY 2021 | ARGYLE LIVING | 17
IN
MEMORIAM Tom George by Jean Eisenmann
O
n December 9th, Argyle residents were saddened, then angered, to hear that their beloved town turkey had met his demise. Some referred to him as Argyle’s mascot, and others just considered him Tom George — the unofficial mayor of Argyle. If you’ve lived in the town for any length of time, chances are you know about this legendary bird. Folks can only speculate about the circumstances that brought him to take up residence in Argyle. It was six or seven years ago that he moved in and made the intersection of Hwy 377 and Frenchtown Road his domain. Soon, he was called the obvious name of Tom by some, while others thought George was a better fit. A social but feisty bird, Tom George spent his days being the center of attention, dodging cars on the highway, running alongside cyclists, pecking on tires, and chasing customers as they left nearby Argyle Auto Care.
Ask nearly every resident, and they likely have something to say about their honorary citizen. Officer Stephen Harper with the Argyle Police Department is one of them. “I remember the time Tom George tried to get in the door of Giovanni’s Pizza,” he said with a laugh. “We had to subdue him.” After his death, the treasured turkey’s beard was salvaged and donated back to the town, soon to be used in an appropriate way to memorialize him. In the meantime, a cross honors him near the place he called home. His was a familiar presence that citizens had observed and enjoyed for years while taking for granted that he would be there for years to come. Tom George brought people together as a community, too, representing what is most important in life. Sharing love and affection, no matter who or what the recipient might be. A life well-lived, Tom George. Rest in peace. 18 | ARGYLE LIVING | JANUARY 2021

he Northern Texas Facial and Oral Surgery (NTFOS) team had a busy week leading up to Christmas. Dr. Michael Pace anticipated a routine end to another rewarding workday, and the team started to wind down for the day in preparation to enjoy their own vacations. The last patient arrived for a consultation for a future tooth extraction, but it only took a few seconds for Dr. Pace to realize this patient was in a great deal of pain. “He was referred to us by a dentist in town, and he’d been on antibiotics for most of the week,” Dr. Pace said. “We weren’t planning to do another surgery that day, but we knew we couldn’t let him leave going into the holidays with that much pain. Bottom line, we had to take care of this patient.” This is just one example of the exemplary care that patients receive at Northern Texas Facial and Oral Surgery in Flower Mound. “Our focus is to make sure that each and every patient receives safe and comprehensive care in our practice,” Dr. Pace said. “Our team is well versed in making sure that each patient experience is exceptional.”
photo courtesy of NTFOS Dr. Pace’s journey to oral surgery started at a very young age. “My grandfather was a general dentist and I admired his profession, work ethic, and accomplishments,” he said. Dr. Pace attended dental school at UCLA. During dental school he found that oral surgery was his passion and went on to earn his medical degree from Loma Linda University. He completed oral and maxillofacial surgical residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Southern California and received extensive training in dental and implant surgery, wisdom teeth removal, anesthesia, orthognathic surgery, facial trauma management, and head and neck pathology.
“The profession I have chosen is a dream come true. I have the opportunity to work with talented dentists, orthodontists, and physicians on a daily basis,” Dr. Pace said. “Working hand in hand as a team to provide superb outcomes for our patients is our ultimate goal.” The office provides advanced technology to help ensure the patient’s comfort and an overall great experience. These technologies include a 3D cone beam CT Scan, the Carestream 3700 intraoral scanner, and the NOMAD portable radiography system. They also utilize regenerative medicine techniques such as platelet rich fibrin (PRF) that encourages

tissue regeneration and facilitates faster healing after bone grafting, dental implant placement, and tooth extractions. “To be able to utilize the newest and available diagnostic tools to assist in providing the best results for our patients is what we strive for,” Dr. Pace said. “The patients leave confident, safe, and comfortable knowing that we offer the best treatment options available.” If Northern Texas Facial and Oral Surgery sounds familiar, there’s a good reason for that. The practice has been serving the dental and surgical needs of North Texas residents for decades and has three other locations in Grapevine, Keller and Irving. “It’s a team of doctors,” Dr. Pace said. “I have weekly meetings with the doctors at our other locations where we discuss cases, and they also give opinions on the treatment planning.” Dr. Pace enjoys heading up the location in Flower Mound and the opportunity to serve patients in the surrounding areas of Highland Village, Lantana, Argyle, Lewisville, Justin, Northlake, and Corinth. “We tell all dentists that if a patient is hurting, send them right over. Most times, we are able to see and treat patients that same day,” Dr. Pace said. He added, “To be able to serve this large community with phenomenal patient care and positive experiences is an honor.” JANUARY 2021 | ARGYLE LIVING | 25

SKY
Pie
BUTTERMILK SHOP by Caylie Howard | photos courtesy of Caylie Howard

my Doyle, owner of Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, opened her business after a two year process in October of this year. Amy fell in love with Buttermilk Sky Pie at a baby shower after trying their famous key lime pie. After meeting the franchise owners and getting a sense of the family feel of the company, Amy knew that this was something that she wanted to be a part of.
All of the pies are family recipes from the franchise owners that were passed down from generations. All of the pies are made from scratch with fresh ingredients and no preservatives. Because of this, there are some pies that are only seasonal due to the ingredients of the pie not being in season, such as their cherry pie. Their two top best-selling pies are the I40 and Key Lime Pies. The I40 is the franchise best seller while the Key Lime is Amy’s best seller. “I40 is my husband’s favorite and the Key Lime is mine and my kids favorite. We’re a house divided.” Amy says.
The I40 is named after the interstate in Tennessee, which is where the company originates from. It is a pecan pie with chocolate chips and coconut. It is absolutely delicious. The flavors don’t overpower each other and it’s the perfect amount of sweetness. The Chewy Chocolate Chip pie is a deep dish chocolate chip cookie with a shortbread crust. This isn’t your traditional pie but it definitely sets the bar high for any cookie you will ever have.
The Key Lime Pie was out of this world. It’s easy to see why it’s a top seller. It’s not too overpowering or tart. It has just the right amount of lime. The key is that they use fresh lime juice. “If you see a key lime pie that is bright green, they’ve used food coloring.” Amy says. Using fresh ingredients really separates this pie from the rest of the pack. Amy always suggests to those that aren’t a fan of key lime, to try their version. These pies are perfect for any holiday, party, or gathering and are sure to impress anyone who tries them. Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is raising the bar for desserts in Denton County.
I was told by Amy that the there was just
something about the Pecan Pie that made it different from all of the rest. After one bite, I couldn’t agree more. It was smooth and soft. I feel that a lot of times, pecan pies can come out too sweet. But this pie was just the right amount of sweetness. And the pecan to pie ratio was perfection. The Pumpkin Pie was phenomenal. The crust was almost like a dough. I felt like it melted in my mouth. I was blown away by the presentation of the pies. Each pie was decorated with a crust in the shape of a pumpkin in the very center. This pie is seasonal only around the Thanksgiving holidays, much to many customers’ dismay.

n general, our society spends an excessive amount of time staring at screens throughout the day. So, after closing up the day’s work or schoolwork, is it okay to spend hours gaming with friends? When video-game life replaces real-life with family and friends, is it a sign of addiction? In this COVID pandemic, the question remains now more relevant than ever — how much is too much?
Gaming problems: who’s at risk? Why is gaming so appealing? First, let me say that playing video games is a fun and normal part of being a kid. However, there are a small number of kids who have a hard time controlling the time they spend gaming. And let’s be honest, there are plenty of adults out there with the same problem. Researchers have been studying gaming habits and are learning more about who is high-risk for ‘unhealthy gaming’ and why. During a 6-year study, they noticed that about 10% of adolescents had symptoms of unhealthy gaming that got worse over time.
Research suggests that video gaming is like gambling in that it targets and activates the reward systems in the brain. What is unhealthy gaming? There is no official diagnosis for gaming disorder in the United States, but it will not be long. The World Health Organization (WHO) does recognize “gaming disorder” as an official condition. In countries like South Korea and China, there are already treatment programs in place to help people hooked on gaming. Here are some things you might notice with unhealthy gaming habits.

Parents should set a good example

y Presidential Proclamation, January is known as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The goal is to raise awareness of heinous crimes against humanity, including children. Human traffickers generate billions of dollars by enslaving individuals through coercion, violence, blackmail, and other manipulative tactics, forcing victims to provide labor or services against their will, including commercial sex. This degradation of human dignity is prevalent throughout the world, including communities across America. And Texas is no exception. According to the U.S. Department of State, there are 300,000 children lured into the commercial sex trade each year in the United States. Surprisingly, roughly 150,000 of them are boys.
Enter Bob Williams, founder and CEO of Ranch Hands Rescue Counseling Center and Animal Sanctuary in Argyle. Bob initiated the nonprofit more than a decade ago to pair abused and neglected animals (the worst-ofthe-worst) with individuals suffering from complex trauma, resulting in unconventional and hugely successful therapy for both man and beast. Bob had always planned to add a safe house to the center as a separate facility, possibly for treating veterans. But after learning of the alarming lack of support and aid for male sex trafficking victims, he had to get involved. “I refer to these boys as the unseen survivors, because of the stigma associated with sex trafficking,” Bob said.

LING Bob’s House of Hope will be the country’s first nonprofit long-term safe house exclusively for male survivors of commercial sexual exploitation between the ages of 18-24. Why that age range?
“We believe younger victims are better off in a secure foster home rather than an institutional home, where they might still receive love in a family environment toward their recovery,” Bob explained. “Older victims, those 18 and into their 20s, are considered adults. But after multiple years of being victimized by abuse, emotionally they’re maybe 14 or 15 and need help and love, too, but in a more structured treatment environment.” The house is being converted from what used to be Ranch Hands Rescue’s headquarters (on Hwy 77 between Denton and Argyle) into Bob’s House of Hope. Residents will be part of a twoyear, long-term trauma care program, providing six young men with 24-hour care seven days a week in a safe environment.
www.ArgyleLivingMagazine.com
BOB’S HOUSE OF HOPE IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN MID-FEBRUARY
“These kids have been through intense trauma,” Bob said. “We’re trying to take what might require years of therapy and compress it into two.”
In addition, residents will be offered a mentoring program led by male and female veterans, vocational training such as woodworking, and furthering their education. By employing the same animal-assisted therapy as the counselors at Ranch Hands Rescue, working with the animals will be an integral part of therapy and recovery for these young men.
Law officers and government agencies phone Bob weekly with requests to take in young sexual exploitation survivors. The majority of residents selected for the safe house will be referred by law enforcement.
Bob’s House of Hope is scheduled to open in mid-February. Hopefully, it
will serve as a model for other cities so that young victims everywhere
might have a place of healing they can turn to.
“We need people to get involved
and join our fight,” Bob implored.
“If we build it, I just know people will support it.”

VACCINES ARE HERE IN
DENTON COUNTY by Precinct 4 Commissioner Dianne Edmondson photo courtesy by Commissioner Dianne Edmondson
D
ecember 16 was a historic day in Denton County. Both Texas Health Presbyterian Flower Mound and Texas Health Denton administered the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to health care workers in Denton County. A day later, Medical City Denton began administering vaccines with Medical City Lewisville following shortly afterward. An additional 2,600 doses were expected the following week.
In a news conference on Dec. 17, Gov. Greg Abbott said the state would have an estimated 1 million individuals vaccinated by Christmas. In January, freestanding medical centers, pharmacies, long-term care centers, and local health departments are expected to have vaccines. We currently have 140 healthcare providers signed up to distribute the vaccine in Denton County and will work with them to ensure we cover the county population.
IN SUMMARY, HELP IS ON THE WAY. ALL OF US WHO WANT A VACCINATION SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET ONE WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.
In addition, antibody therapeutic drugs are available in Texas for those with COVID-19 to help them recover and keep them out of hospitals. After nine months of a pandemic and with the significant increase in cases in November and December, this was great news with which to end the year. Now, as we start a new year, we see light at the end of the tunnel with both Moderna and Pfizer mRNA (messenger RNA) vaccines available across the U.S. We also have exciting news to share locally about a Little Elm company, Retractable Technologies Inc., which is a pioneer in providing effective safety syringes with automated retraction syringes and needles. The Denton County company will increase its manufacturing
capabilities as part of Operation Warp Speed and the upcoming vaccination campaign across the country. The U.S. Department of Defense, through a Technology Investment Agreement, has agreed to fund $53.6 million to increase RTI’s manufacturing capacity for the product of safety needles for current and future pandemic response. In summary, help is on the way. All of us who want a vaccination should be able to get one within the next few months. In the meantime, we must not let our guard down against this vicious virus. Following the Thanksgiving Holiday, a surge in positive cases resulted here in Denton County with COVID patients now occupying more than half of the ICU beds. Therefore, we must continue to be vigilant and practice the CDC guidelines to keep ourselves and others protected as the holiday season continues. But indeed, let us also be joyful as we see great progress in the fight to defeat COVID-19.

WELLNESS 2021
TRENDS To Find Your Bliss by Kelly Murray
M
any popular fitness and health trends came to light over the past year, from tele-health to wellness coaching and better health monitoring. Now that 2021 is here, we have even more wellness trends to consider. Here are just a few that will define 2021.
Wellness Ecosystems With more people staying home, this year will be filled with all types of home-based wellness trends. One that’s becoming very popular is the planning and creation of wellness ecosystems within homes. Implementing this concept in your household means that you can improve any indoor influences on your health, whether it’s the technology you regularly use or the architecture within rooms. For example, Circadian lighting is indoor lighting that can help improve your sleep by mimicking the natural patterns of sunlight. Air purifiers are becoming common in many households as people have become more aware of poor air quality outside their homes. The colors, designs, and other elements of your home’s architecture can affect stress and overall comfort levels. You can bet more people will make these subtle changes in the months to come. 36 | ARGYLE LIVING | JANUARY 2021
www.ArgyleLivingMagazine.com
Immunity Hacks Immunity and improving it is likely to be a hot trend over the next few years for two reasons. First, genetic testing to identify weaknesses in the immune system has become much more common over the past few years. It’s more affordable and reliable than ever before, so many people are becoming interested in having their DNA tested. Also, the COVID-19 pandemic reminded many people of their own mortality, and many have begun to question their immune strength. Without immunity, you can’t possibly find bliss when illnesses or disorders can occur out of nowhere at any time. That’s why immunity hacks are predicted to be a major theme in 2021. By improving your diet, utilizing new health technologies, and being more mindful of your sleep and physical activity, a strengthened immune system can ensure that your 2021 is a healthy and blissful one. Focus on Mental Health Society as a whole has made major strides in recognizing and treating mental health. All indicators point toward 2021 as the year where mental health will be brought to the forefront and prioritized. A major catalyst for this was the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress, depression, and anxiety all took center stage, with many people becoming worried about the future while being isolated during home lockdowns. Tele-health became crucial for healthcare providers who needed to treat mental disorders from a safe distance. While general wellness and health can contribute to your happiness, true bliss can’t be achieved without mental stability. In Denton County, there’s currently one mental health care provider for every 1,257 residents. While this isn’t too out of the ordinary compared to other Texas counties, it means that taking preventative measures is important for everyone. Mental health trends predicted for 2021 should be embraced and integrated into your everyday routine. This includes taking care of yourself by ensuring that you’re remaining socially active, opening up to others about your feelings, and taking up hobbies that enrich your quality of life. www.ArgyleLivingMagazine.com

rgyle football coach Todd Rodgers is used to denying himself the opportunity to celebrate. When you’re a head coach, that’s simply not something you do at any point throughout a season. There’s too much going on and too much that can go wrong if you take your eye off the day-to-day grind for even a second. After all, just when you wrap up beating one opponent, you have to turn around and start prepping for the next one immediately.
But there are no more opponents. The Eagles beat them all, giving Rodgers every reason to finally enjoy the moment. Last month, Rodgers’ Argyle Eagles capped a perfect 16-0 season with a 49-21 win over Lindale to capture the Class 4A Division I state title in front of a COVID-19 limited but raucous crowd at AT&T Stadium.
He added, “I love that. Without a doubt.”
The Eagles were the top-ranked team in 4A from start to finish and never once trailed in any of their games. The win over Lindale cemented that dominance, as Argyle jumped out to a 28-0 lead by halftime and finished the game with 571 total yards. Defensively, the Eagles held Lindale running back Jordan Jenkins, who entered the game with nearly 3,000 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns, to 110 yards and one score in the loss. Meanwhile, Argyle running back Tito Byce was named Offensive MVP after rushing for 153 yards and four touchdowns.
Zach Stewart was named Defensive MVP, finishing with a team-leading nine tackles. “I think we played all year with an edge,” Stewart told the Denton Record-Chronicle after the game. “After last year, we didn’t play too good. We felt we needed to go out and prove ourselves every game, and I think we did that.” Coming into this season, the Eagles were only 1-4 in championship games, having lost in 2005, 2011, 2014, and 2015. They were not going to be denied this season, as they outscored opponents 770-248. Their playoff road included wins over North Dallas, Stephenville, Waco La Vega, Paris, and Canyon. Rodgers stopped short of comparing his 2013 championship team to this year’s squad, going so far as to say that there isn’t much difference between the teams that won it all and his squads that came up just a little short. “Each team had its own dynamics that made everything work,” Rodgers said. “They both got gold rings and gold trophies, and there are several MVPs as a result of those games. In my eyes, there’s just not that much difference. Even the teams that came in second place; we were within one score of winning several more [state titles] with them.” As for the future, Rodgers admits he and the rest of his coaching staff will have their
It was the program’s first state title win since 2013 and sixth appearance in a title game overall. “You have to deny yourself the celebration because you’re always moving on to the next thing,” Rodgers said. “But with state ending before Christmas, and all the church services talking about the importance of being grateful, it’s awesome because you can finally have that moment of clarity in regards to all the people who played a role in this process.”

-9 Nilo was born on December 15, 2011, in the Netherlands and was named “Daffe.” He was purchased and imported to the United States in August of 2013. In the fall of 2013, the Denton County Sheriff’s Office committed to building a K-9 program to help serve Denton County citizens. K-9 Nilo was the first K-9 selected to join our agency, and he and his handler began training in Louisiana. After Nilo and his handler completed training in March of 2014, he hit the streets working. Nilo continued to work with his original handler until the fall of 2017 when he was assigned a new handler. Nilo’s new handler, Deputy Corey Halfmann, was his partner until his end of watch on December 14, 2020, due to a terminal illness. K-9 Nilo’s end of watch was just one day shy of his birthday. Nilo’s spent his entire career working Criminal Interdiction. Hunting illegal contraband smugglers was his passion. In doing so, Nilo assisted in the seizure of thousands of pounds of narcotics and millions in assets seized from narcotics smugglers, drug dealers, and other criminals. His largest single narcotics seizure was 445 pounds on a traffic stop. K-9 Nilo was known throughout the North Texas K-9 World as one of the best narcotic sniffing K-9s around. His reputation in the criminal interdiction world was so good that state and federal agencies across North Texas called for his

assistance numerous times. Officers from other agencies respected Nilo and were always happy to have him assist. Nilo’s handler, Deputy Corey Halfmann, shares these sentiments: “On every traffic stop I would make, K-9 Nilo would become fully alert and would always stand up and watch every move I made from the vehicle through the front kennel door. On one traffic stop, he was able to get through his kennel door and was in my front seat. What was great was that he had his paw on the light bar and siren buttons and was hitting them. So there I was, trying to get through this stop, and my sirens and lights are on and off and changing constantly because Nilo keeps hitting the buttons with his paws. I can say with certainty that on numerous occasions when dealing with violent criminals, the sound of Nilo’s bark always deterred the aggressive behavior of the person I was dealing with. There is no telling how many times his bark saved my life. I have never had a criminal attempt to violently confront me once they heard Nilo barking. Nilo was one of the most kind and gentle K-9s around. He was very sociable and loved kids. Sometimes, I think he loved them more than me. He loved going up to kids and pushing all his weight on them so they would have to wrap their arms around him to stay balanced.

All the way up until the end, K-9 Nilo loved to work. I would go outside in the morning and start my unit only to hear K-9 Nilo start his excited yelping because he knew it was time to go to work. That boy would race out of the house and sit at the door of my unit, waiting for me to open it. There was nothing he loved more than going to work. Most people have no idea the bond a handler has with his K-9 partner. I did not really even know how tight our bond was until the loss of him. It one of the hardest things I have ever had to deal with.” K-9 Nilo spent his last days with his handler and family at home, celebrating his birthday with cake and treats. DCSO was honored by Nilo’s service, and he will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, K-9 Nilo!
