FIRST AID KITS: F

un in the sun is great UNTIL it is NOT. Accidents, injuries, and bugs can attack at any moment. Putting together a first-aid kit that is practical and functional can be a daunting process. I hope that you find this list to be doable and functional. Put a kit together and keep it in your car for those impromptu minor summertime emergencies.

QUICK GUIDE TO A FIRST AID KIT: 1. Purchase a basic pre-made first aid kit to get you started. Try to get one with a container large enough to add things or get a small duffle bag.

• Small scissors and Tweezers

2. Add to the kit (examples below):

• Topical and Oral Benadryl

• Water bottle for cleaning out wounds and battling dehydration. • Electrolyte/rehydration solutions or packets • Flashlights and batteries • Wet wipes • Clean towels —microfiber towels are absorbent and compact

• Sunscreen • Bug spray • Hydrocortisone Ointment • Calamine or Calamoseptine (my favorite) Ointment • EPI-PEN/ Prescription medications • Ibuprofen and Tylenol —liquid, tablets and chewable: Pack a dosing chart for children to quick reference.

• Alcohol wipes —good for cleaning instruments for reuse.

• Dramamine or other nausea medications

• ACE bandages, large popsicle sticks/ tongue blades for splinting needs

• Afrin nasal spray for nosebleeds: Afrin is a quick fix for a nosebleed

Kingdom Chess Camp is open to anyone entering grades 2-9. They play by the Swiss system, which consists of five rounds of play with no eliminations. Even if a player loses, he or she plays in the next round. Each player earns one point for a win, half a point for a draw and zero points for a loss. The player with the most points at the end of the five rounds is the winner.

with insurance,”

said Dr. Gomez,

an internist and

Argyle resident.

“They can call for

consultation over

the phone which,

with insurance,

would need to be an

in-patient visit.”

The simple fact is that insurance

companies don’t pay doctors unless

they actually SEE the patient. That’s why a doctor won’t diagnose over the phone or just write a prescription without first seeing a patient. Also, insurance dictates that doctors see a particular number of patients within a certain amount of time, so hour-long appointments just aren’t feasible. For the most part, Direct Primary Care is about wellness and preventative medicine. Doctors like Gomez also provide minor procedures and handle chronic disease management such as diabetes. Argyle resident Phil Loftis and his wife are both small business owners. They, along with their three kids, are all patients at Argyle Family Medicine.

Like most, his insurance coverage

has doubled in price but has become virtually unusable.

“From a financial standpoint we save

money and the level of care is ten times better than with insurance for three

kids,” said Phil who owns Sigma Signs.

“Insurance is there in case of a catastrophe but it’s extremely convenient to go

through Becky (Dr. Gomez) for our regular family needs.”

DPC patients still need health insurance to cover hospital emergencies and to meet the Affordable Care Act criteria. Since

photo courtesy of Dr. Becky Gomez

ACA was enacted, catastrophic insurance (high deductible, used only in case of

emergency) is not as affordable as it used to be.

The argument against DPC is that patients will forgo insurance altogether especially those who are younger and don’t get sick often. The problem comes when

something bad does happen and not only

will they owe the medical bills, but

the government will fine them for not having insurance.

The other concern is that the more doctors turn to DPC, the less doctors there will be to fill the insurance gap. With insurance,

well over 60% of doctor’s office costs are

administrative, which is why DPC doctors can survive on the monthly cost alone. Many of the DPC doctors say that they

don’t make as much money, but the trade off is worth it.

“Insurance is getting so hard to deal with as a doctor,” said Gomez. “It makes it hard to focus on the patient when so much of your time is spent with paperwork.” DPC is growing in the North Texas area and facilities are popping up in Frisco and Roanoke with another to soon open in Flower Mound. It’s whether patients find the additional cost worthwhile that will determine its survival. “Having insurance doesn’t necessarily mean you have healthcare,” said Gomez. From what I have gathered over the years, the overwhelming favorite subject is “lunch”, the favorite game played at recess is “I don’t know”, and the most common newly learned topic for the day is “nothing”. With this amount of enthusiasm, I am always pleased to remind them how nice it is of their dentist to get them out of school. Joking aside, back to school is a good time to remind us all of the importance of education. The single most important aspect of my role as your dentist is to educate you on oral health. So here are a few quick dental education points that I most frequently explain:

At what age should your child start dental appointments?

The American Academy of Pediatric

Dentistry recommends children seeing their dentist as early as one year old or at the sign of their first tooth. This is not only important to get a baseline on the child’s dental development, but also to educate parents on good oral hygiene and nutritional habits as a preventative measure against tooth decay.

abrasive, but still helps to remove plaque. Toothpaste with fluoride will help build enamel in areas that have demineralized from plaque and acid.

How often should I see my dentist?

This is actually answered on an individual basis. Depending on your oral health, the recommended 6 month cleanings may not be sufficient. Some patients require 3 or 4 month recalls to maintain good oral health. The best way to determine your optimal visits is to ask your dentist.

The easy answer to this is to prevent

hether you're an avid reader of my monthly column or reading for the first time, I thought I'd remind everyone what we do here at Edit This, www.edit-this-npsteve.com.

What is Edit This? Edit This is a writing and editing services company specializing in helping business owners in all industries come up with the right words to effectively communicate with their customers (ex: blogs, content writing for websites, press releases). paper, or a business professional who needs an updated resume and cover letter. Who is behind Edit This? My name is Steve Gamel and I am the President/Owner of Edit This. I am an award-winning journalist who brings to the table 20 years of experience as both a writer and editor. My work has been published in newspapers such as the Denton Record-Chronicle, www.dentonrc. com/sports/high-schools, and Dallas Morning News, sportsday.dallasnews. com/high-school. I also freelance for several community magazines, including those for Murray Media Group. I have been recognized by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors and the Associated Press Sports Editors. In 2015, Edit This was voted Best Writing and Editing Service in the Best of Denton County awards, www.bestofdentoncounty. com. Edit This was a Top 3 Finalist in the same category for 2016. I am also heavily involved in the community and do

whatever I can to get out from behind my desk to meet new and amazing people. Though I am a one-man show at times, I like to use the word "we" when referring to Edit This. Over the years I have developed relationships with website developers, companies that offer printing and promotional products, marketing and advertising specialists, and graphic design artists. This is all in an effort to create a turnkey product for everyone. I thank them for their continued partnerships. Why hire Edit This? I've found most business owners don't have the time to write or double check their own work. In some cases, they freely admit they are not good writers. This leads to mistakes in grammar or an important message that doesn't come across the way they hoped it would. In this day and age, business owners might say they can't afford to hire a professional writer. I say ... in this day and age, you can't afford not to. Our services here at Edit This truly run the gamut. I've been asked to double check email communications and craft public address announcements. I've even helped a few clients come up with the right words for their GoFundMe page. If you're not sure if what you need fits with what I do, give me a call anyway. It's worth a conversation, right?
