A big smile slides across Brian Gasperson’s face every time he tells the story of his first client contract.

“Have you seen it yet?” Gasperson says as he

brings in a nearly 30-year-old contract with a hand-drawn flyer. His mother framed both as a keepsake. “It’s one of the best Christmas presents I have received.” The agreement, which is on display at his new Grassperson Lawncare & Landscape office off Highway 121 and Main Street in Lewisville, was from when Gasperson was 12 years old. Per the contract, he mowed the lawns of 10 homes owned by the old Southern Savings & Loan Bank in Lewisville. It turned out to be a good deal for the local kid. “Me

Holly Groom was perfectly content as a labor and delivery nurse. Well, sort of.

Groom loves being there for women during child birth, and took enormous pride even as a nurse in helping bring a sweet bundle of joy into the world. But truth be told, sometimes you want to do more. “I felt I understood what women were going through during birth and that I could empathize with them,” Groom said. “Finally, after the birth of my second child, I managed to do [more with] that.”

“[But] my favorite awards are from my clients,” Groom said. “The hugs, the sweet notes, even the tears we share together. It is truly a miracle the way a woman’s body delivers a baby.” She added, “Being able to help, for me, is truly a gift and an honor.”

Groom left nursing not long after that and for the last 20 years has been a nurse midwife. She is part of the midwifery team at Caring for Women, which has three locations in Denton, Flower Mound and Frisco, and she’s managed to assist in the safe delivery of more than 3,000 babies.

Many people think a nurse and a midwife are the same thing. That’s just not true. Nurse midwives are health professionals who specialize in supporting and guiding mothers and families throughout pregnancy. They also provide well woman and gynecological care to women of all ages.

Groom went to midwifery school and received her Master’s Degree in Nursing Science from Texas Women’s University in Denton. Groom, Ellis and Marion are all at Caring for Women, which has grown into the most diverse and advanced OB/ GYN private practice in North Texas thanks to its individualized care and welcoming environment. The trio of nurse midwives have taken part in the National American College of Nurse Midwives Benchmarking program, and have been recognized nationally several times for their work. Their 2015 primary c/s rate is 6.8%, the national average is in 32% (CDC). They encourage and will do VBAC’s (vaginal birth after cesarean) as well. Their intact perineum rate is 68%. That may take a lot of work for some medical professionals. But for these caring women, it’s all in a day’s work. “My goal is to educate women so that they have the tools for birth,” Groom said. “Women need to prepare for pregnancy by adapting a healthy lifestyle. Many times they need assistance with that process. Sometimes that’s all a woman needs. The nurse midwives at CFW are here to help support women throughout their entire lifespan.”

Six years ago a client sheepishly approached Jesse James Leyva, Owner of Jesse James Fit in Flower Mound, TX to ask a favor. Inside JJF there is a large wall, growing each year full of client photos who had competed in various bodybuilding and fitness shows.

The pictures were for everyone to see – like a wall of fame – and the men and women in them were sculpted from head to toe. Everyone loved the display. This particular client wanted to be a part of it. “I remember a client asking, ‘I don’t want to do a show, but it’s a goal of mine to get on that wall.’ You don’t have to be a competitor to get on the wall and I thought it was an awesome idea,” replied Leyva.

“We train a variety of clients from husbands and wives, even a mom and her two sons,” Leyva said with a smile. “These are regular people who made big changes. I get goosebumps every time I think about it.” Leyva opened Jesse James Fit 10 years ago with the goal of being different from the big box fitness centers surrounding him. He envisioned a safe environment for people dedicated to making big changes in their lives to feel comfortable doing so. The Jesse James Fit motto is “Success is not what you do for yourself but what you do for others” and Jesse encourages his staff to deliver this thought to each client they get the pleasure to work with.

In the span of a year, Leyva lost everything. “Our old facility was 45,000 square feet and we couldn’t afford it under the state it was in, equipment breaking, AC out and an old building with broken parts,” Leyva recalls. “What could go wrong kept going wrong. There were plenty of times where I wanted to throw in the towel.”

It is not a gym, rather a personal training studio that focuses on anything fitness related from weight loss programs, boot camps, individualized training, group training, couples training, youth programs, senior programs, and military prep training.

Jesse James Fit has 16 personal trainers including 2 partners, Kay Simms & Flossie Stiles. Jesse, Kay and Flossie combined offer over 50 years of experience in the fitness industry. Their attitude of inclusiveness, respect, and good old fashioned hard work has helped Jesse James Fit become a trendsetter in the fitness industry. Leyva and his team land multiple awards year after year – including those from you our loyal Best of Denton County voters. In 2016, Jesse James Fit was voted Best Personal Trainer, Personal Training Facility, and Weight Loss Facility. They also won Best Indoor Bootcamp for his sister company, Outlaw Bootcamp. “We are a big family,” Leyva said. “I love people and I could tell from the very beginning that we had something different. I was never big on how gyms did things. Everyone here is trained by someone, and they have that individualized attention and accountability. It has become a safe place for many people.” Leyva’s passion for health and fitness began with him taking a heavy interest in bodybuilding even earning the title Mr. Texas in 2010. Leyva had always instilled passion, discipline, hard work and love into each of his clients. He enjoyed working with people towards meeting their goals and self-betterment. He had amazing retention as a personal trainer and used his strengths and passion to rebuild.

He started over and created Jesse James Fit. At the heart of his new venture was individualized training. Unlike big box gyms, everyone at Jesse James Fit is paired with a trainer. Those trainers share the same core values that Leyva has, and they are in it for the long haul. Some trainers even left corporate America to pursue their passion and make a career in fitness. To reward his staff, Leyva introduced a new multi-tiered salary structure in February for his employees that creates a team culture for success.

That’s practically unheard of in the fitness industry. Jesse James Fit was the first in the country to do a salary-based structure for personal trainers. For 2017, Leyva hopes to add group health insurance.

“That’s why we have good retention. Some personal trainers have been with me for 10 years now. It creates stability for clients.” Never one to stay stagnant, Leyva said he is always looking for ways to make his product better for clients. Each year he does something different, whether it be adding new equipment and various remodels to opening a new location and adding more incentives for his trainers. He and his staff are heavily invested in the community, and will continue to march to the beat of their own drum making a fitness impact on anyone who is ready to make changes towards their health and lifestyle. At this rate, he may need another big wall for more client success stories. “I never thought I’d have this many cool stories come out of one place in Flower Mound, TX,” Leyva said. “Looking at the wall of photos sometimes others see someone up there and think, ‘Oh, that guy’s just lucky.’ They don’t know the story behind the guy in the photo or his journey to accomplish the 35 pounds weight loss and the fit physique displayed. Or the lady who lost 60 pounds, got off medications, and gave it her all for weeks and weeks, sweat, and tears to overcome her obstacles. These people weren’t perfect or lucky, they worked hard and persevered through the tough workouts. We’re just happy to be able to offer the place and trainers to help them accomplish their goals.”

Fat Cow BBQ was founded in 2009 by Henry Wall and Allen Lockett. Henry and Allen were best friends and business partners at that time. Allen had a “knack” for amazing BBQ and Henry is a visionary that saw an incredible opportunity. Even though neither of them had ever worked in the restaurant business, they decided to take action on Henry’s idea even though most family members and friends thought they had lost their minds. They started offering catering services (business to business) and in a short amount of time they were getting more caterings than they could keep up with out of their homes. Their wives Kathy Wall and Pamela Lockett were really getting fed up with their homes constantly smelling like BBQ smoke and gave them an ultimatum and deadline to stop running their growing business out of their residences. On October 30th, 2010 the first brick and mortar Fat Cow BBQ restaurant (only 950 sf) was opened in Lewisville, Texas that was mainly for caterings and take out business with

Due to the overwhelming love for their food, they took over another suite and remodeled in 2011 to accommodate over 100 dine-in customers and then the real growth began. In December 2014 Fat Cow BBQ opened their 2nd location at 3040/MacArthur Blvd and has plans to open new locations in Ft. Worth, Watugua, Grand Prairie and Mesquite, Texas in the near future. Fat Cow BBQ also dove into the exciting Food Truck industry and launched their first truck in November 2015. When Brad Trapnell decided to open What’s On Tap, his biggest concern was location. With 36 taps featuring craft beers from all over the country, constantly changing, was What’s On Tap the kind of place you would expect in downtown Dallas, but Highland Village? To say the results have exceeded his expectations would be an understatement. Brad left his cush job in real estate finance to open What’s On Tap, serving a huge variety of beers, wines, ciders and even root beer. This is so much more than a bar. Sure, you can get a pint, but you can also take your beer home in a 32oz or 64oz growler. For the newbies, a growler is a glass or metal container used to take beer to its destination, directly from the tap, while maintaining the beer’s freshness. There is always something happening here. Every Wednesday night is pint night, highlighting a craft beer or a few from a particular brewery. Thursday is run night with Luke’s Locker where a group comes to run a 3 mile path (give or take) and ends with a pint. There’s even live music on weekends. The most creative part of his job Brad says is working with different groups in the community. He has a group from UNT coming in for a donut and beer pairing and another for a beer
