TOGETHER WE CAN
B U I L D A B E T T E R CO M M U N I T Y Volunteering in the Community For over 48 years, DBL members have donated their time, energy, and expertise to nonprofit organizations throughout the Denton area. Last year, DBL members reported thousands of volunteer hours. In total, more than one million service hours have been contributed by members since DBL was founded in 1973. Each active and associate member is required to contribute a minimum of 25 volunteer hours annually for community programs and services that are nonprofit, nonpolitical, and nonsectarian. In addition to their individual volunteer efforts, members support group projects where DBL partners with local nonprofit organizations on specific volunteer opportunities. Group projects for 2020-2021 include: • Adopt-A-Spot • Denton Arts & Jazz Festival • Denton Christian Preschool Mexican Supper • Salvation Army Angel Tree • Ann’s Haven Hospice Bereavement Luncheon • Monsignor King Outreach Center/The Junction Dinner • Denton’s Little Free Pantries

Underwriting, and the Tabloid. The Tabloid traditionally is distributed at the Charity Ball. This year the Tabloid is being distributed in print and digital format via the Denton Record Chronicle. Member dues cover all administrative expenses incurred by DBL. DBL has no paid staff. All work is done strictly by dedicated volunteers.
In January 2021, DBL distributed $248,093.10 to 39 local organizations.
Becoming a DBL Member Membership in DBL is open to women who live in the general vicinity of Denton, Texas, and agree to support and participate in the work of DBL. Currently there are 249 members. DBL does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, religion, or national origin, and reaches out to women of all ages who are committed to volunteerism. The women of DBL serve Denton by raising funds and donating time for activities that improve the quality of life in the community. Working together, members build leadership skills, discover new volunteer opportunities, and through their combined talents, strengthen all of DBL’s endeavors. Honoring Our
HEROES My heroes are cowboys. These three cowboys have made it their mission to assure that the youth of Denton County will carry on the legacy of western heritage, livestock shows, and agriculture for years to come. Glenn Carlton, (top left) executive director of North Texas Fair and Rodeo, spends long days and nights, not only in August at the fairgrounds, but any time there is an event on the grounds that includes kids and agriculture. Mark Foster (top right) has never turned down a request to donate buckets, brushes, boots, or whatever was needed to help the kids in FFA, FHA or DCLA. Mark has been on the North Texas Fair and Rodeo Board for many years and every August you will see him out there volunteering wherever needed to make sure the kids have great livestock shows and rodeos. Weldon Burgoon (bottom) was always one to share his stories about the horses, western artifacts, and all things Denton, while sitting behind the leather workbench at Weldon’s Western Store. He could be found at the youth barns during the livestock shows giving advice and encouragement to all. These three cowboys are making sure that Denton County’s western heritage will be remembered for generations to come. Honored by Laura Brewer

Captain Phil Shamel My hero lays in a bed beside me. He is still and motionless. Tears are forming as I remember the love I have for him and all he has done for me. To know him is to love him, and to strive to be as wonderful as he is. He never met a stranger and always aimed to save a soul. He put Jesus first in all things. His many friends call him Captain, he is someone you will never forget. He soared with the eagles. He was contagiously happy and courteous at all times. Unconditional love is how he lived his life. He taught me everything I know and was a perfect example of how to live and love. My heart is broken but I wouldn’t trade a moment of the anguish to not have known him. He is a top gun in the Navy, a Purple Heart recipient, and an American hero. He is my friend, my teacher, my protector, my mentor, my heart, and best of all my Dad! He finally has his own wings and Heaven is blessed with his beautiful soul. God speed Dad, I love you! This world will never be the same. Honored by Tanya and Joel Blixt
Jackie Shamel What do you do when you are stuck at home in a pandemic? You work to help your community! Jackie Shamel began making masks early in the spring of 2020. She made and donated over 400 masks to healthcare workers, RSVP Volunteers, Women To Women clients, office workers, and the members of the Denton Noon Kiwanis Club. She even made headbands with buttons for the mask straps to wear a mask comfortably without hurting your ears. Jackie Shamel is a Denton hero because she kept many safe from the virus (for free)! Thank you for your talent and compassion! Honored by Tanya and Joel Blixt
Heathor (Shamel) Flynn Heathor (Shamel) Flynn doesn’t run! Shortly after 911 she volunteered to massage the rescuers at the site of the Twin Towers. She had recently graduated from college and attained her massage therapist certification before the tragedy. Instead of sitting back safe at home, she volunteered to give much needed massages to the rescuers. Heathor gave over 50 massages in only nine days before the air at the site caused health issues. She is an American hero who stood up and helped during a travesty that rocked our nation. Thank you Heathor for your courage and strength; we admire you! Honored by Tanya and Joel Blixt

CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE 2021 DBL GRANT RECIPIENTS!
BLUE SKY THERAPEUTIC RIDING AND RESPITE Blue Sky provides weekly individual therapeutic horseback riding lessons in a structured learning environment to citizens with special needs. They also hold community group activities for children and adults with special needs where attendees can create artwork, learn gardening skills, woodworking, and other entrepreneurial activities. CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHILDREN’S HOME Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home received their first DBL Grant in 1976, the third year DBL distributed grants. We are proud of the long history of supporting the work of Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home as they focus on keeping kids safe and families together while striving to break the cycles of trauma, neglect, abuse, abandonment, family violence, and poverty in our community.
COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF NORTH TEXAS DBL is proud to have supported Communities in Schools of North Texas at various times during the past 20 years. Their mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and to achieve in life. DENTON CITY COUNTY DAY SCHOOL DBL first awarded a grant to Denton City County Day School in 1980 and we are proud to have supported them in some years since that time. Denton City County Day School’s mission is to support a diverse, multicultural population of pre-kindergarten children and their families in Denton County by providing quality affordable childcare and early childhood education. Special emphasis and attention are placed on serving children from low to middleincome families.
DENTON PARKS FOUNDATION The Denton Parks Foundation works to engage the Denton community to enhance the Parks and Rec Department’s mission to UNITE, GROW, and PLAY. DBL first supported the Denton Parks Foundation in 1993 with a grant award. This year’s grant will be used to help develop a signature public art piece and monument honoring the legacy of the Denton Women’s Interracial Fellowship (DWIF). The DWIF was a fierce group of black and white women who, through fellowship, passion, and determination, helped integrate the Denton community during the 1960s. Their civic and community engagement demonstrated the power of community in overcoming social injustice.
