how dog ownership promotes
HEALTH & HAPPINESS A s pet parents, we feel the puppy love every single day. Dogs love us unconditionally and in doing so, add so much love and happiness to our lives. Did you know owning a dog can provide a variety of health benefits to pet owners beyond just feeling good? Learn more about the added health benefits of owning a dog:
ADDITIONAL EXERCISE The recommendation of 30 minutes of daily exercise is a simple task for dog owners. Dogs need regular exercise to move their muscles and use their energy. Pet parents participating in walks with their dog or playing a game such as tug-of-war are allowing their furry family member to exercise while getting in their own daily movement, too.
HEART HEALTH According to a study provided by Heart. com, dog owners are likely to live longer than those who do not own a dog. Most dog owners regularly take their dog on walks along with other forms of exercise, like fetch. This regular exercise promotes heart health and limits the risk of diabetes in humans by one third. Dog ownership is also known to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease while simultaneously lowering heart rate and blood pressure.
BETTER SOCIAL SKILLS Dogs can encourage pet parents to try new things and meet new people. There is nothing quite like a dog to start a conversation with someone new. While taking your dog out on their walk around the neighbourhood or on your favourite www.Dogtopia.com
trail, your dog may happen to introduce you to others on the same path. Should your dog attract the attention of someone enjoying their daily stroll, say hello and introduce yourself. Not only does this improve your dog’s social skills by meeting new people, but it strengthens your own social skills, too!
IMPROVES OVERALL HEALTH According to the CDC and the National Institute of Health, owning a dog improves a human’s life in a variety of ways. Dogs can assist with reducing anxiety, depression, and cholesterol while increasing serotonin levels in the body. By having a canine companion in your life, your overall health will improve.
LOVE & LOYALTY A dog is a person’s best friend. They love unconditionally, never lie and are always faithful to their pack. Regardless of how stressful your day was or what mood
you are in, dogs are there to be our best friends, cheer us up, maybe make us laugh and will always be loyal. We can learn a variety of lessons from our dogs and their overall outlook on life. Looking for ways to give your dog a little more love and attention as a thank you for all they do for you? Dogtopia daycare is the perfect place for your pup to play, exercise and meet new furry friends. With highly trained Canine Coaches to care for your dog and likeminded pups to play with – your dog is sure to have an experience they will want to relive day after day. WHAT DOGS
learn
AT DOGTOPIA DOOR CONTROL When a guest arrives at your front door, your dog might jump up, bark, or try to block the entryway. At Dogtopia, our Canine Coaches practice door control to help combat this behaviour.
For this exercise, a Canine Coach draws a semi-circle in front of the door and stands inside it, praising the dogs that stay outside the marked area. If any dog steps into the circle, they are gently guided back outside the chalk line. The Canine Coach will praise pups who remain outside the circle, rewarding their good behaviour. With repetition and practice, your dog will quickly learn the value of staying away from the door, making it much easier when house guests or deliveries arrive.
6 | DOGTOPIAN | VOL 2 — FALL 2023

GROUP SIT
At Dogtopia, our Canine Coaches understand the importance of fostering a stress-free and well-behaved pack dynamic.
During group sit exercises, a Canine Coach will gather the dogs in an area and instruct them to sit in unison. This exercise helps to reinforce the concept of following commands as a group. As dogs learn to sit calmly alongside their peers, they develop better social skills, patience, and self-discipline.
CRATE DESENSITIZATION At Dogtopia, we practice crate desensitization to help dogs develop positive association with crates. Our goal is to show dogs that crates are not used as punishment but rather as a safe space to relax.
a
During these exercises, our Canine Coaches encourage pups to explore the crate at their own pace. By doing so, we help build trust and alleviate any fear or anxiety. As they become more comfortable, we’ll practice short periods of crate time during daycare. This paves the way for easier crate training at home if necessary. Should your pet need to be crated for travel, rest, or safety, they will approach it with confidence and acceptance.

eet Ali Varga, the owner and operator of Dogtopia Royal Windsor. After growing up visiting her family’s farm, Ali decided to pursue a career in the veterinary scene, where she gained invaluable knowledge and expertise. But as time went on, she began yearning for a role that would allow her to be involved in the happier parts of an animal’s life. During the pandemic, Ali began looking into franchise opportunities within the animal care industry. As a pet parent to her high-energy and intelligent pup, Callie, who attended daycare at Dogtopia twice a week, Ali was already quite familiar with the Dogtopia’s brand and services. After seeing how the once-shy and docile Callie began to confidently interact with dogs of all breeds, Ali knew she wanted to further explore the possibility of opening her own Dogtopia. With her mother, Grace, and sister, Stephanie, by her side,
Being an owner and operator, Ali is involved in many parts of the business. When she’s not working hands-on in the playrooms, she’s focused on building and nurturing her team. Ali assembled a remarkable crew from the get-go, many of whom are still with her a year later. Recognizing achievements and providing a pathway for growth, even outside the realm of animal care, has been a priority. From pizza parties to setting goals with tangible rewards, Ali fosters a work environment that keeps her team feeling appreciated and motivated. Ali's biggest triumph has been consistently operating three rooms from Monday to Friday, ensuring that enough dogs find their way through the doors of Dogtopia Royal Windsor on a consistent, weekly basis. In Ali's journey from animal lover to owner and operator of Dogtopia Royal Windsor, it's evident that her dedication and love for animals have come full circle. She not only provides exceptional care for dogs but also creates a vibrant community of pet parents and a dedicated team, making Dogtopia Royal Windsor a true haven for furry friends and their owners alike. Ali's story is a testament to the power of following one's passion and turning it into a successful and fulfilling career.

SAFETY TIPS
W
inter weather is here! It’s important to keep your dog’s safety top of mind all year long, but winter can bring some new elements to consider. Keep your dog safe and warm in the chilly and snowy winter months with the help of these tips:
ENSURE YOUR DOG STAYS WARM Winter weather can be as dangerous for dogs as it is for humans. If you notice you are cold when you step outside, there is a good chance your dog is cold, too. A dog’s nose, ears, paws and tail can experience permanent damage if frozen. Quick bathroom breaks are expected, but dogs should be mainly kept warm indoors during extreme weather conditions. If you believe your dog is experiencing frostbite, wrap them in a blanket or towel, move them to a warm area and contact your veterinarian for immediate support.
and allowing it to warm up before allowing your pup to jump in for a ride. If temperatures are low, do not leave your dog in the car unattended while running your errands.
WATCH OUT FOR WINTER CHEMICALS During the winter, chemicals such as antifreeze are commonly used. Antifreeze is a dangerous chemical to a dog because it smells and tastes sweet, but is toxic and dangerous for a dog’s kidneys. If you notice antifreeze spilled anywhere clean it up immediately to avoid any risk of your dog ingesting it.
CHECK PAWS FOR DAMAGE Keep an eye on your dog’s paws for cold-weather injuries such as cracked, scraped or bleeding paw pads. Sidewalks can become icy in the winter. It may be hard for humans and dogs to gain traction, so many cities will throw salt on the ground to provide better grip. This is helpful; however, it may get caught in your dog’s paw pads and create an uncomfortable buildup. To ensure your dog is comfortable, check their paws frequently and cleanse with a warm towel after they return inside. Regular grooming will also prevent the buildup of snow because the hair between paw pads will be trimmed.
Worried your dog won’t get enough exercise this winter? Take them to your local Dogtopia daycare! Dogtopia daycares have temperature-controlled playrooms which allow pups to play the day away regardless of the weather outside.
KEEP YOUR DOG DRY Wet fur can quickly freeze in extreme winter temperatures and conditions. When fur is cold, your dog is cold. Keep your dog free of frostbite and illness by drying off your dog if you plan to play with them in snow, ice or water in the winter months.
KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE IN THE CAR Did you know a dog being left alone in the car in the winter is just as dangerous as being left in a car in the summer? Cars retain the cold temperature making it easy for the vehicle to become too cold for your dog. If you plan to take your dog on your everyday errands this winter, consider starting the car www.Dogtopia.com

meet Meet Kim Hamm, the CEO of Dogtopia Canada, and her 5-year-old dog Sophie. Kim adopted Sophie from a shelter when she was five months old. She wasn’t properly socialized and was quite reactive during walks. She would bark or pull at the leash whenever she encountered another dog. Sophie began attending daycare at Dogtopia three times a week, and it made a significant difference in managing her puppy energy and confidence. After a day at daycare, Sophie would be exhausted in the car, enjoy her dinner, and spend the rest of the evening cuddling on the couch. Within a few months, Sophie’s reactive behaviour diminished. Walks that previously required detours and crossing the street to avoid other dogs turned into calmly passing by. Thanks to the team at Dogtopia, Sophie is a well-behaved, socialized canine citizen that goes on adventures with confidence.

meet Meet Lily, a 2-year-old corgi mix. Lily was once a very confident pup but developed a fear of all dogs after a series of traumatic attacks. Walks became a struggle. She would refuse to move until other dogs were far enough away from her and her pet parent. A friend suggested Dogtopia, and they decided to give it a try! On the first day, she stayed withdrawn from other dogs, only interacting with the Canine Coaches. Lily’s pet parent questioned if daycare was the right fit for her. But on day five, she saw Lily playing with other dogs on the live webcams, and her hope soared. Day six brought even more joy as Lily ran and played happily with all the other dogs. Now, on walks, she no longer hides in fear. Dogtopia has helped Lily regain the confidence her pet parent never thought she would get back.

top tips to become a
PET INFLUENCER FROM JESS & MILO @MILOZZWRLD
W
hen it comes to our furry family members, it's hard not to follow them around like paparazzi, capturing every adorable moment with our cameras. Jess found herself in this very scenario when she brought Milo home in the midst of the pandemic. Her camera roll quickly became a treasure trove of snapshots, prompting her to create Milo's own Instagram page — @milozzwrld. What started as a fun hobby took an unexpected turn when a small treat company in Toronto saw Milo's charm and offered him his first brand ambassador opportunity. And just like that, Milo's journey into the world
JESS & MILO’S TOP TIPS: 1. Be Authentic and Support What You Love: Aim to support brands and businesses that you genuinely believe in and love. Reach out to the brands you are familiar with and ask about opportunities for potential partnerships asking about potential partnerships. The worst they can say is ‘no’! www.Dogtopia.com
of pet influencing began. Now, as a brand ambassador for some of their favourite Canadian small businesses and brands, Milo and Jess get access to all sorts of perks like awesome pet products to create content with and personal promo codes to share with their followers. Fast forward to today, and Jess and Milo have built up a tight-knit community of followers who eagerly await Milo's latest adventures and playful shenanigans. We asked Jess and Milo to share their top tips for other pet parents who are interested in exploring the world of influencing and digital content creation. Read them below!
2. Know Your Worth: One of the most difficult aspects of negotiating influencer opportunities is putting a price tag on yourself. Use past opportunities as learning opportunities to help you better price yourself going forward. It’s also important to understand what value the brand is going to be getting from the content you provide when negotiating your compensation.
3. Keep It Fun: Jess's advice is simple — content creation should be fun. While earning from it is a bonus, the primary focus should always be on cherishing moments with your pet. VOL 2 — FALL 2023 | DOGTOPIAN | 17
WHY YOU SHOULD YOUR PUPPY FROM AN EARLY AGE
E
arly puppyhood is a critical period for shaping a dog’s behaviour and temperament. One of the most essential aspects of this developmental phase is socialization. This process involves exposing your puppy to a variety of people, animals, environments, and experiences to help them grow into a well-adjusted and confident adult dog.
PREVENTING FEAR AND ANXIETY
Early socialization helps puppies become accustomed to different sights, sounds, and situations. This exposure reduces the likelihood of fear and anxiety-related behaviors as they grow older.
PROMOTING POSITIVE INTERACTIONS
Properly socialized puppies learn how to communicate and interact with other dogs and humans. This leads to better play manners and a reduced risk of aggression or fear-based reactions.
ENHANCING ADAPTABILITY
Dogs that are well-socialized are more adaptable to new environments, people, and experiences. This makes travel, vet visits, and other activities less stressful for the dog and the owner.
BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND TRUST
Positive interactions build a foundation of trust between you and your puppy. They learn to rely on you for guidance and feel secure in new situations.
PREVENTING BEHAVIOURAL ISSUES
Early socialization can prevent the development of unwanted behaviour such as aggression, fearfulness, and excessive shyness. It provides a solid foundation for obedience training.
18 | DOGTOPIAN | VOL 2 — FALL 2023
CREATING A HAPPIER, WELL-ROUNDED COMPANION
A well-socialized puppy is more likely to grow into a happy, confident, and well-adjusted adult dog. They are better equipped to handle various social situations and environments.
WE'RE HERE TO HELP We know that raising a puppy is no easy feat, but we’re here to help! HOW TO PREPARE YOUR DOG FOR
BOARDING L
eaving your dog at an overnight boarding facility can be daunting. However, with proper preparation, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free stay for your fourlegged companion. Here are some tips to help you get your dog ready for their home-away-from-home overnight adventure. 1. Visit the Facility in Advance If possible, take your dog for a visit to the boarding facility before the actual stay. This allows your dog to familiarize themselves with the surroundings and staff, reducing anxiety on the day of drop-off. At Dogtopia, we strongly recommend that your dog visits us for at least 3 days of play in advance of their overnight boarding stay if they are new to our pack to help make their experience more comfortable. 2. Pack Familiar Items Bring along your pup’s favourite blanket or bed from home. These familiar items can provide comfort and reassurance during their overnight stay. Make sure to label your pup's belongings. 3. Stick to Routine Try to maintain your dog's regular feeding and exercise schedule as closely as possible before dropping them off. Consistency can help reduce stress. 4. Stay Calm Dogs are highly perceptive of their owner's emotions. Stay calm and composed during drop-off to reassure your dog that everything is okay. 5. Trust the Staff Choose a reputable boarding facility with experienced and caring staff. Trusting professionals can ease your worries about leaving your pet. At Dogtopia, our team of highlytrained Canine Coaches will give your pup all the love and

attention they need when you can't be with them. Plus, we provide you with regular updates about how your dog is doing. For those moments when you miss them a little extra, you can watch them socialize in our playrooms from the Dogtopia app or website. By following these steps, you can help ensure that your dog has a safe and enjoyable overnight boarding stay. With a little preparation, you'll both be ready for a happy reunion when you return.

playful Solution to Canine Obesity
A
By Renee Fleming, Veterinarian and Co-owner of Dogtopia of Guelph
T
he increase in overweight and obese pets has been a growing concern among veterinary health care professionals for decades. It is estimated that upwards of 60% of dogs in North America are overweight or obese. And it's easy to understand why — we love to make our pets happy, and our pets love to eat! Additionally, many of our pets do not receive enough exercise (or enough vigorous exercise) or mental stimulation, and this all leads to a gradual increase in weight. In theory, it should be fairly easy for our
22 | DOGTOPIAN | VOL 2 — FALL 2023
pets to maintain a lean body condition, as we are the ones that control access to their food/treats. But there are a few factors at play — many pet owners do not know how many calories their pet actually needs, nor do they understand the caloric content of the treats and 'extras' we give to our pet. Finally, there are so many overweight dogs in the media (television, magazines) that many of us do not know what a healthy body condition should be for their pet. The good news is that there's a fun and effective way to combat this issue — doggie daycare! Beyond just offering a break for busy pet parents, doggie daycare can be a powerful tool for preventing dog obesity.
One of the primary causes of dog obesity is a lack of physical activity. Dogs, like humans, need regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight. And as they start to carry extra weight, our dogs will often show resistance to routine exercise. The fully supervised, climatecontrolled playrooms at Dogtopia provide our guests with all-day play,
whether it's playing fetch, chasing other dogs, or just running around, daycare ensures that your dog gets the exercise they need to stay fit and trim. Consistency is key in managing a dog's weight, and routine exercise can provide a slow-yet-steady progress to an ideal weight. Doggie daycare provides a daily routine, including regular mealtimes and exercise sessions. This consistency helps regulate a dog's metabolism, making it easier to prevent obesity. As a veterinarian myself, I have seen the benefits of consistent daycare in my own patients. So, if you're concerned about your dog's weight or want to ensure they remain fit and active, check with your veterinarian to be sure you are providing adequate nutrition for your pet based on their age, breed, and current health status. You should also consider enrolling your dog at your local Dogtopia doggie daycare — it might just be the key to a longer, healthier life for your furry friend. www.Dogtopia.com

Q&A Q: How do you prevent scuffles? A: At Dogtopia, our Canine Coaches are trained to recognize and understand dog body language which allows them to effectively redirect any unwanted behaviours before the play escalates. If a scuffle does occur, our Canine Coaches are equipped with a handful of different scuffle tools such as citronella spray, blankets, and water buckets to break up the interaction.

Q: Where do dogs go to the bathroom at Dogtopia?
Q: How many days a week should a dog come to daycare?
A: Dogs decide where to go to the bathroom based off of scent. Since our HVAC systems are constantly bringing in fresh air from outside, the dogs recognize our playrooms as a safe place to use the bathroom. But don’t worry, this doesn’t impact potty training at home since the dogs are able to make the distinction between the playroom environment and your home. max Meet
O
ne of our Dogtopia Foundation’s worthy causes is providing meaningful employment opportunities for adults with autism. We believe that every individual deserves a safe and inclusive workplace and Max’s remarkable story at Dogtopia Regina East perfectly exemplifies the impact of this initiative.
Their commitment to employing adults with autism led them to invite Max for an interview.
Max sought support from the Autism Resource Centre (ARC) to find meaningful employment. With the help of ARC, Max explored his interests, honed his skills and gained valuable knowledge in the job-seeking process. Months of diligent effort led Max to apply for countless jobs in pursuit of a fulfilling career.
Through unwavering support Max has thrived in his role. His dedication and love for the job have been heartwarming to witness. Each day, he wakes up with enthusiasm, knowing he is making a difference in the lives of the dogs he cares for.
In a touching post, Max’s mother shared his aspirations on a Regina business page. Among those who responded were Janet and Brad Hoffman, owners of Dogtopia Regina East.
The connection was instant, and the Hoffmans offered Max a position on their dedicated team. Overjoyed, Max accepted the opportunity to work as a Canine Coach at Dogtopia Regina East.
Max’s journey is a testament to the power of providing employment opportunities for adults with autism. We extend our sincere congratulations to Max and express our gratitude to Dogtopia Regina East for bringing the values of the Dogtopia Foundation to life.

n the heart of Guelph, Ontario, Renee Fleming and Charlene Troubetzkoy have embarked on a remarkable journey, creating a haven for dogs and their pet parents alike. Their venture, Dogtopia of Guelph, is more than just a business —it’s a testament to their shared passion for animal welfare and their dedication to providing dogs with a safe, enriching environment. PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUNDS Charlene Troubetzkoy, a native of New Brunswick, Canada, felt an early calling to work with animals. Her journey began with volunteering for cat and dog issues in her local community and later working at a vet clinic. During a trip out to St. Lucia in 2010, she witnessed firsthand the distressing conditions of dogs living there. This pivotal moment fueled her determination to make a difference. Armed with a degree in non-profit management and a wealth of animal welfare knowledge, Charlene relocated to St. Lucia in 2014 to launch her own rescue efforts. It was through high-volume spay
and neuter clinics that she crossed paths with Renee Fleming. Renee, hailing from a small town an hour north of Guelph, discovered her true calling in veterinary medicine. Her journey led her to study Veterinary Medicine at the University of Guelph. After working in a few different local veterinary hospitals, Renee continued her career at Guelph Animal Hospital, and joined as a co-owner in 2008. THEIR PATHS CONVERGE In 2016, Renee and her husband joined a mission to assist in St. Lucia, where they were introduced to Charlene. Impressed by Charlene’s unwavering dedication, a bond formed. The two women shared a vision and a mindset, solidifying a partnership that would shape the future of Dogtopia of Guelph. PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN THE PET INDUSTRY Both Charlene and Renee have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of socialization for dogs. They

believe that this aspect is crucial, not just for sheltered animals, but also for those in forever homes. The decision to choose Dogtopia as their business model was rooted in its proven system and established brand. It allowed them to focus on what they do best — providing exceptional care and enriching experiences for dogs — without the challenges of starting from scratch. LOOKING FORWARD The dynamic duo have big plans for the future. They aim to increase the number of dogs in daycare, expand their team, and further support their community. Continuing to build on the professional development of the entire team, but especially their Canine Coaches, is their priority, ensuring Dogtopia of Guelph remains a cut above the rest. Renee Flemming and Charlene Troubetzkoy have not only created a thriving business but also a sanctuary for pups and pet parents in Guelph. Their partnership and shared vision have propelled Dogtopia of Guelph to great heights in just a few months of opening.

Julia Wang
(Dogtopia Kitchener) Dogtopia has been a lifesaver for our family. The staff are absolutely amazing with our dog, Momo, and she loves going to daycare every time we bring her there — it’s like her second home. Momo gets to interact and play with all of her furry friends in a safe and controlled environment. Every time we take a peek at the cameras, we see her playing with her friends or sleeping in a corner, which just goes to show how comfortable she really is! We honestly would be at a loss of what to do without Dogtopia, we cannot say enough great things about the facility and the staff.
Charlotte de Souza (Dogtopia Bloor West)
My partner and I absolutely LOVE Dogtopia. Our puppy is excited to go every morning and exhausted when we pick him up. The webcams are awesome and it is so lovely to be able to check in on our little guy throughout the day. The staff are kind and patient and take the time to keep all the dogs safe and happy. We could not ask for a better daycare to bring him too!

(Dogtopia Meadowvale) Having never used a doggy daycare before, I was a little hesitant about bringing my pup to one. Would he enjoy it? Would he feel betrayed or abandoned by me? After one visit to Dogtopia, I quickly realized how much my puppy loved it and just how wrong I was to worry! The facilities at Dogtopia are great and having a place to exercise and interact with many other dogs is invaluable to any dog, especially a puppy. But the top-notch staff are what make this place what it is: they each care for my dog like he’s their own and he adores them all. They’ve kept a very watchful eye on him and have done a great job of helping his socialization and grooming. My puppy is no longer averse to car rides and each time we pull up to Dogtopia he can’t wait to get inside. When we get home, he is blissfully tuckered out which is a win for everybody! I can’t recommend this place enough to any dog owners on the fence about it!
