Love of PETS The
Even If They Get Me In Trouble
T
he winter season is upon us! For some, it brings crisp walks outside, for others it means the opportunity to curl up with a good book and a cozy fire. Either way, it’s a wonderful time of year to celebrate family in all its forms, pets included, and for me that’s exactly what my dogs and cat are - family. So for all you pet lovers out there welcome to our pet issue where we celebrate the relationship between us and our furry friends. If you know me, you know that I am a big fan of quotes. I love how a few short words can uplift me and really change my mood. So in the spirit of sharing, here is one of my favorite pet quotes: “God couldn’t be physically with us so he gave us dogs... And notice, dog spelt backwards is god and they both show unconditional love!“ - Unknown In this issue, you’ll find all sorts of articles on pets, from how to avoid poisons to combating allergies. You may even find a few cute photos. Speaking of photos, send us your favorite pet photos by email or through social media. You never know when we might publish stuff like that. Don’t forget, if you have a great story idea, please email us at Editor@murray-media.com, as we LOVE getting ideas from our readers. Thanks for reading, and enjoy this month’s issue!

“Preaching is my real love. I enjoy

I think people enjoy my preaching for three reasons. First, I preach only the Bible; this is what people desire and need. Second, I do my best to make
preaching practical. I want my Sunday morning audience to be able to use it Monday morning at work. And third,

www.LakeCitiesLiving.com
The 16-year coaching veteran and easily one of the more well-respected volleyball coaches in North Texas, left her post at Guyer on Jan. 22 to become an assistant principal at Argyle Middle School. Van Noy initially confirmed the news to the Denton Record-Chronicle. Her first day in her new Argyle role was on Jan. 25.

first season at the helm. The 2015 team matched that third-round run in Class 5A. During her time at Lake Dallas, she racked up 143 wins. “It was an incredible ride, for sure,” Van Noy said. “Leaving was hard, but the outpouring of love that I received from people was incredible. I mean, kids who I got to coach back in 2005 were reaching out. For me, it has been a whirlwind and super emotional, but I’m grateful for those 16 years because it shaped me into the administrator that I want to be. It gave me perspective, grace, and empathy. And it has allowed me to see and experience a lot of things.” Van Noy admitted that she thought she’d be at Guyer for much longer. But when the Argyle Middle School role came open, it was something she couldn’t pass up and at least had to throw her name in for. As luck would have it, Argyle officials saw something special in her and eventually made the hire. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to be a teacher,” Van Noy said. “When I got out of college, coaching fell into my lap and was an added bonus. [Leaving has] been difficult because of the relationships that I’ve built through coaching and with all of those great players. But ultimately, [administration] is where my heart is.” She added, “I’m incredibly grateful for the people I’ve worked with at Guyer and Lake Dallas, and then Guyer again. They all taught me so much, and I attribute all of my success to them.” FEBRUARY 2021 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | 15

etro Dent in Lewisville was, is, and will continue to be a premier leader in the technology of paintless dent repair. For more than 25 years, people have known this was the place to take a car or truck riddled with door dings or hail dimples and, within a few days, pick up the same vehicle that now looks as if it’s fresh off the showroom floor. Mike Nosker purchased Metro Dent from his friends in 2018. His immediate goal was to begin expanding the services offered to his customers. Working with dedicated focus, he needed only two years to broaden the service umbrella to cover any type of automotive or marine repair. “I still had a lot of customers who were surprised when they learned about all the services we provided in addition to hail and paintless dent repair,” said Mike. “I decided the name Metro Dent fell short in describing our expansion into a ‘onestop-shop’ kind of business. I created two new DBAs
to better reflect to customers that we can offer them the best of everything, whether they bring us a car, a boat, or a jet ski.” Creating names can require a great deal of deliberation. It needs to indicate the service provided, with a sound and rhythm that sticks in a person’s head. Mike played around with words for several weeks. “Utopia” popped into his brain and wouldn’t leave. While doodling, it occurred to him that adding “a” to the beginning of “utopia” changed the first four letters to spell “auto.” That was it! Autopia was born. Boatopia, to describe the ton of boat and jet ski work the business handled, just followed naturally. Both Autopia and Boatopia are owned and operated by Metro Dent.
“I STILL HAD A LOT OF CUSTOMERS WHO WERE SURPRISED WHEN THEY LEARNED ABOUT ALL THE SERVICES WE PROVIDED IN ADDITION TO HAIL AND PAINTLESS DENT REPAIR...”

What really separates Metro Dent from the would-be competition?
Answer: The entire technical staff,
including Mike, travel the world to learn
different techniques, actually assisting the on-site technicians from whom they’re
learning. This keeps them on the cuttingedge of available technology.
Raised in Dublin, Ohio, Mike spent 20
years traveling the world and working in hail storms, automobile manufacturing
plants, and body shops. He’s worked on
six of the seven continents which, in itself, is impressive. The goal that chased him
from one place to the next was to have a shop that provided the best service and quality anywhere on the planet.
He grabbed the opportunity by the horns when he purchased Metro Dent from
his friends in 2018. There’s no indication he’ll slow down anytime soon. After all,
it requires total dedication to remain the best on the planet.

Living for Gratitude by Diane Ciarloni | photos courtesy of Lloyd Banks
T
he year was 2018, and Lloyd Banks was in the best shape of his life. He was muscular, strong, and had great stamina. He even trained five days a week at Camp Gladiators. Life was good. That is, until it wasn’t so good.
“We took a little family fun trip to College Station in November 2019,” said Banks, a Corinth resident and serial entrepreneur. “I got up early one morning to go for a workout. On the way there, I tripped over one of my feet a couple times. I didn’t think it was anything serious, but it was unusual for me. I figured I had a pinched nerve and would make an appointment for acupuncture when we got home.” He had the acupuncture. It didn’t help. Then, in the spring of 2020, Banks and his lovely wife, Toby, were in bed when he noticed his feet were numb. They talked about it and decided he should see a neurologist, which he did that May. First, the doctor performed some simple tests on Banks’ feet. The reactions were not satisfactory. The first of several MRIs was scheduled. Finally, the doctor revealed the procedures were indicating that he likely had multiple sclerosis, a horribly debilitating auto-immune disease. “He said my toes curled up instead of down in the early test, which is suspicious,” Banks said. “Next, the MRIs showed lesions on my brain and spine. The final determination would come from a spinal tap.” He had the painful spinal tap. And sure enough, he had MS. There is no cure for MS, but there are medications that focus on slowing down the growth of the lesions as well as the development of new ones. The doctors wanted to discuss drug protocols with Banks. He declined, saying he wanted to recover from the initial shock and explore his options. He and Toby spent hour after hour on the Internet, learning everything they could while reaching out to people who suffered from the same problems. 22 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | FEBRUARY 2021
“REGARDLESS OF HOW IT ALL TURNS OUT, I WOULD NOT TRADE ANY OF IT.” “I didn’t want the meds,” Banks said. “I watched my sister struggle with MS, and I wanted a different, more proactive, and more aggressive approach. Toby and I stumbled onto a treatment referred to as HSCT, with two clinics in Mexico and one in Russia. Trials are at a few places in the United States. To pursue the treatment, I needed approximately $90,000 and to spend 27 days in Mexico with a personal caretaker. We talked to people. We read and studied. We prayed. We finally decided to go for it. I called my doctor and told him. In my file, he wrote ‘Noted.’” HSCT is hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. The focus is to reset a faulty immune system. Hematopoietic stem cells are taken from the patient’s www.LakeCitiesLiving.com
bone marrow or blood and stored. Intense chemotherapy is then administered, and the goal is to destroy the patient’s immune system. It’s not working properly anyway, so get rid of it and re-grow it from square one. Next, the extracted blood cells are returned to the patient through a vein. One of the greatest dangers is the possibility of the body being attacked by various infections while the immune system is re-building. His oldest daughter Allie agreed to journey with her father to Mexico as his required caregiver. But before the journey could begin, there were financial matters to address. Banks, family, friends, and colleagues began networking to schedule fundraisers. Checks and cash flowed through Banks’ GoFundMe page. “It wasn’t just the money,” he said. “It was the hugs, the people who gave me support and encouragement, the messages telling me how much I meant. I had no idea there was so much sweetness and goodness out there. I could actually feel myself starting to change and open up to that love.”
Despite everything, Banks had this to say about his ordeal:
than ever to my family and to God. I know, without a doubt, that I will spend the rest of my life giving back and paying forward. Everything about my outlook changed, including getting out of bed earlier! I’ve learned how to be still and listen — and I feel so good!”
“Regardless of how it all turns out, I would not trade any of it. I am completely changed by it all. I’m grateful for being blessed with all that sweetness and goodness. I’m closer
Banks is telling the truth. It’s in his voice. In his eyes. In his heart and in his soul.
Banks and Allie returned from Mexico nine weeks ago, having been there while COVID-19 raged on. He’s back to working out five times per week, and he feels great. As for the numbness in his feet, there is improvement there, too — all signs that he is finally getting back to his former self.

hat happens when you combine a guy from Michigan, Texas BBQ, and Louisiana flavors and spices? You get one of Lewisville’s newest restaurants Kretzschy’s Cajun BBQ!
Owner Steve Kretzschmer started the business many years ago back in Michigan when his son was looking for a way to make some money. They started up a hamburger stand and worked community events and festivals together as a family. And before he knew it, he was opening a full-blown restaurant there in Michigan. So, how’d he end up in Lewisville, Texas? One word - grandkids! His sons moved to Texas for college and ended up staying
here and growing their families here. So, Steve decided to relocate to Texas as well to be close to the grandkids and opened up the second Kretzschy’s location in August 2020 off FM 407 in Lewisville. Steve’s love for Cajun cuisine and flavors grew after he spent lots of time in New Orleans for work years ago. And that love is apparent in every bit of food he serves. Kretzschy’s best-seller is hands-down their Kretzschy’s Fries which you can get loaded up with either their pulled pork or their brisket. After trying these, we know exactly why they’re a best-seller and crowd favorite! The tenderness of the meat is incredible and the flavor of the sauces just elevate the whole thing. Then we’ve got to talk about the fattest quesadilla I’ve ever seen in my life. It was stuffed with about two inches of pulled pork, cheddar cheese, and then was served with sides of their blueberry sauce and made-in-house pico.
And we haven’t even mentioned their po’ boys and signature burgers yet! But Kretzschy’s did all begin with their burgers and they’ve definitely put their own signature touch on them! They are seasoned with their special seasoning and drizzled with some of their blueberry barbecue sauce, then are smoked for an hour which results in one of the most delicious burgers I’ve ever tasted! We were practically fighting over bites of it. Kretzschy’s is a great addition to our local restaurant community, so do us a favor and head over there to welcome Steve to Texas and try out some of his amazing Texas BBQ-Cajun fusion food. And get yourself some of those signature Kretzschy’s fries!

indness is more than the virtue of treating others with goodness and respect. It can be taken a step further by adding that those who demonstrate kindness are helpful, thoughtful, and considerate. For some, perhaps it translates to doing nice things for others without expecting anything in return. Kindness can generate a chain reaction effect – for once you receive kindness, doesn’t it give you the motivation to pay it forward? And so on, and so on, kindnesses increase in volume like a snowball going down a hill. And all it takes is one person – or organization – to start it.
Mark Tucker with Allstate Insurance in
Hickory Creek rolled that first snowball in
September with the Kindness Revolution.
Mark’s resume of community involvement in the Lake Cities includes more than 30
years in the insurance business (more than 20 of that with Allstate). He is currently serving a second three-year term on
the school board for Lake Dallas High
School, and he also sponsors several of organizations such as the Quarterback Club. Always willing to support his

community, Mark’s insurance agency
was selected to lead an initiative to make the Lake Cities a kinder community by implementing a unique way to recognize the importance of kindness. And, true to form, he’s become 100% involved. The Kindness Revolution is a national nonprofit initiative to raise awareness of the benefits of kindness and customer service in communities. It began in 2007 with Tennessee public speaker and author Ed Horrell and is based on the principles
in a best-selling book he wrote with the same name. His goal was and is to restore the values of dignity, respect, and kindness. Since its inception, the initiative has expanded to more than 300 cities across the United States, with more joining every day. “We at Mark Tucker Allstate are totally committed to the Lake Cities community, promoting and acknowledging acts of kindness in the workplace, schools, and among first responders,” Mark explains. “In fact, we just reached out to Plano and added them to our initiative. So, folks there can be acknowledged, too.” If you have experienced exceptional customer service, sincere kindness, firstrate assistance, or you simply were the grateful recipient of a heartfelt smile from any Lake Cities/Plano business or public service facility, it probably made your day better – even memorable. Whether it was a one-time positive experience or something consistent with every visit doesn’t matter. You now have the opportunity to thank and acknowledge

“WE JUST WANT TO PROJECT POSITIVITY & RECOGNIZE THE KINDNESS THAT EXISTS THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY.” them for that positive behavior by nominating the business for the Kind Business Award. A Facebook page has been set up (@KindnessMarkTucker) to receive nominations. Include in your message a brief explanation of why the business is praiseworthy. A drawing is held every week from all the nominations to date, and a local business is chosen. “Due to a hugely positive community response,” claims Mark, “we will now begin awarding an additional two to three businesses weekly.” Mark Tucker personally pays a visit to each winning business and presents them with a framed certificate. A photo of that presentation is posted on Facebook along with the written (anonymous) endorsement that won them the notable award. Taking the Kindness Revolution another step, Mark held a “Heart Attack Campaign,” where local elementary www.LakeCitiesLiving.com
school children designed messages of kindness on paper hearts. Those were then distributed to Lake Cities businesses and first responders. As another approach to disseminating the kindness message, Mark and his Allstate group will be initiating a local Kindness Podcast. It should launch in February and is tentatively set for the third Tuesday of every month.

940.484.8441 though kindness is infinitely essential, the thought of putting it into daily practice sometimes seems revolutionary. As Mark expressed, “We just want to project positivity and recognize the kindness that exists throughout our community.”
“Each month, we’ll welcome new guests from various professions to discuss how kindness enriches their jobs and lives. One month, it might be local police and fire chiefs. In other months, we could host teachers, front-line healthcare workers, and more,” Mark explained. Simple acts of kindness occur every day in our communities, and they cost nothing. And yet, the rewards are priceless. The initiative’s very name reflects the idea that, FEBRUARY 2021 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | 27

s Paul Carter planned his retirement, he searched for opportunities to give back to the community. He and his wife had volunteered with their local church and at the Flower Mound Police Department. With their children grown and out of the house, they were looking for more. A friend mentioned the Medical Reserve Corps. Some 13 years later, the Flower Mound resident now volunteers at the vaccination clinics held across Denton County. “It just makes me feel good helping with the vaccination clinic,” he said. Members of the Medical Reserve Corps assist during times of need, whether a disaster, inclement weather event or a pandemic. Members have access to an assortment of training – from
cardiopulmonary resuscitation to
Stop the Bleed courses and much more. The training not only applies to
emergencies but also to everyday life. If an accident were to occur in his outings, Paul said he feels prepared. “I can at least be a stopgap measure until emergency help arrives,” he said.
The vaccination clinics offer a chance
to interact with individuals. And there’s
plenty to do – from staffing a call center to guiding traffic flow or checking in with residents while they await the COVID-19 vaccine shot.
“We need a lot of help,” Paul said. “And we get more out of it
(volunteering) than we give.” Anyone interested in assisting with the vaccination clinics can sign up
with the Medical Reserve Corps at
www.dentoncounty.gov/758/MedicalReserve-Corps. Volunteers will undergo a background check and complete a 1-hour online orientation. “To me, everybody there (at MRC) are really great people,” Paul said. “We’re all there for the same reason. We’re doing it to help the community.”
