T
Quickly his year, instead of getting to August and wondering what was accomplished, I decided to make a list of five things I plan to do every day in order to consider this summer a success.
Live in the present – So often we’re thinking about what we need to do next, we forget to be where we are. Be present, especially for your family. Kids want your time and your attention. Play a board game, go on a hike, do something without thinking about what you have to do next.
Smile – I look forward to my first out loud laugh of the day, which is usually courtesy of one of the girls at the Murray Media offices because they could moonlight as comedians (if you don’t believe me, read “Yummy Bites”). Smiles are infectious. Give yours to others.
Learn something new – This old dog loves new tricks. Take a trip to a nearby historical location and learn all about something you didn’t know. Better yet, learn a new word every day and share it with your kids. There are plenty of sites with ACT/SAT words that your kids need to learn anyway.
Help someone - Sometimes this is as simple as calling an elderly parent or donating your time to a community cause. Involve your kids so that they may see how important it is to put others first.
Kitchen dance – I have a friend that gets up every morning and does a kitchen dance. She posts the video on Facebook and asks everyone to join in. It’s usually something from Soul Train, which is fun for us old folks. It’s a great way to start the morning.
I urge you to make your own list though you are certainly welcome to mine. Have a great summer and remember; time flies when you’re having fun so make time fly and make it the best time ever. Happy Summer!
Sincerly, Susan Neuhalfen

At 3pm, the Lake Dallas City Park, 101 E. Hundley Dr, will have food, contests, vendors, and great live music. New this year is the Spirit Squad Tent, with lots of fun stuff for the kids. For example, they will have a kids frozen t-shirt contest, where kids will relay to open a frozen t-shirt, put it on and race to the finish.
There will be a watermelon eating contest followed, of course, by a seed spitting
contest. At 4pm will be the all-new apple pie bake off where slices will be sold for $1 after the judging. All proceeds will
benefit the Lake Dallas Animal Shelter. A huge fireworks display sponsored by
Classic of Denton will end the evening. Admission is free. Outside food and
drink (including alcohol) are not allowed. Also, no fireworks. Let the professionals
handle that. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash. Go to http://www.lakedallas.

Fresh HERBS
Dear Annette: How should I use fresh herbs in my cooking?
Dear Reader: The earth truly gives us all we need to be healthy. Once you start eating and cooking fresh herbs you will find everything else tastes stale and dull. Herbs bring foods to life with flavor and color. When to add herbs: Soft leaves herbs such as dill, chervil, basil, cilantro should be added to a dish at the end for the best burst of flavor. Hardy herbs like rosemary, thyme, oregano, sage, and bay leaf should be added during the cooking process. Paring herbs: Robust or strong-smelling herbs like
rosemary are best with heart stews, soup, root vegetables roasted, and, roasted meats or proteins.

Raise Your Standards,
Y
ou know it’s funny. If you look at successful people, whether it’s
financial or physical success you
will see a consistent pattern of two things: 1) high standards; and 2) no fear of making decisions.
You see, both of those things go hand in hand with success. Accomplished
goals come from making a DECISION to take a risk. You then have to have HIGH STANDARDS in order to get the results you’re looking for, by not settling for mediocracy.
Let’s start with high standards. By having
high standards you tend to shoot high at everything you do, no matter what it is.
You have to make it a staple in your life, a habit! When you make it a habit you
will then realize that the things you set
out to do will tend to have a different outcome. When you apply it
to your fitness goals you
will realize that fitness
isn’t always about a look but about a

Great things manifest from raising your standards and expecting more of yourself and those around you. Now for the all-important decisions. Decision is something that everyone naturally does without even thinking about it. You unconsciously make decisions all the time. The decision to sleep in everyday and wake up an hour before going to

Young said he was pleased with his team’s spring workouts last month, insisting that the Falcons got better on both sides of the ball and now have young players who, after being thrown into the fire last year, are hungry to take a step forward as the program looks to return to the playoffs.

“both those guys are talented and we will need both of them to have a good season,” “We will be a lot better, that’s for sure,” said Young, whose team barely missed the playoffs last year in District 14-5A. “I see this group being in the same position as the 2015 season with Dagan (Haehn) and Keegan (Brewer). That team played through a rough season the year before and then came back and were a couple of overtimes shy of going to a state title game. “We had 12 sophomores and two freshman that saw playing time last year. That’s going to help.” The jury is still out on exactly how close the Falcons are to repeating on that magical 2015 season, but this spring was a great start. o matter how much we love to write, writers often find themselves searching for the necessary inspiration to jump-start that next big project and/or stay motivated to finish it.
1. Change the time of day you write
The good news is inspiration is not hard to find. It's all around us. We just have to be willing to keep our hearts and minds open long enough to recognize it! Trust me, staring at a blank computer screen all day or forcing something onto the page is not the answer.
5. Read books/articles from favorite writers
Below are 25 ways (in no particular order) to get out of that creative rut and stay inspired.

Back 2 School Fair
Needs Help NOW
E
ven though we’ve just wrapped up the school year, families in the Lake Cities need our help now to make sure that every student has the supplies needed to start school in the fall. There Has to Be More Ministries, started by Lake Dallas Mayor Michael Barnhart and his wife, Suzanne, is a non-profit organization that works with churches, businesses and individuals to provide for the needs of families in the Lake Cities area. Every year they hold a Back 2 School Fair at Lake Dallas Middle School in coordination with other sponsors and businesses. It is a family-friendly event providing backpacks, school supplies, immunizations, physicals, haircuts, vision
screenings and more for economicallychallenged students in LDISD. This will be the 4th year for the Back 2 School Fair. Serving the three LDISD
elementary campuses as well as Lake Dallas Middle School and Lake Dallas High School, they provided supplies and

In addition to monetary donations, the ministry is collecting school supplies to build up the reserve. They need new zippered binders and any other new and unused supplies. Barnhart mentioned that sponsors could provide materials with their printed logo. These items may

be dropped off at Lake Dallas City Hall or donations may be mailed to Box 1225, Lake Dallas, TX 75065. The fair, which will be held Thursday, August 10 from 5p-9pm is free to attend, however, families who wish to receive supplies and/or immunizations MUST sign up online no later than July 21st at 5:00 pm To register, go to https://www. therehastobemore.org/back-2-school-fair. Once registered, the family will receive a confirmation that their submission was received. They will then be contacted via email or phone prior to the event to let them know if they have qualified. The Lions Club will provide vision screening exams while CareVan will provide immunization shots. Dr. Charlotte Burgess’ office will provide sports physicals along with the paperwork needed for school. Ogle School of Denton will be on hand with their chairs set up and their scissors ready to give children great new haircuts to start to the school year as well. There will also be a bounce house, face painting, cotton candy, popcorn and lots more fun for the kids.

n October, Lake Dallas Elementary Physical Education teacher Jamie Roach challenged her students to run not one, but four marathons throughout the school year. For those of you unfamiliar with the mileage on a marathon, that’s 26.2 miles per marathon. In all, she challenged them to run 104.8 miles by May 19. 320 Lake Dallas Elementary students

She ran with each grade level on Wednesdays and Fridays during recess. They also met twice a month at the track for open track on Saturday mornings. All the hard work has certainly paid off. This is only Coach Roach’s first year with Marathon Kids and the success she as seen on the program has been phenomenal – so much so that she was named a Marathon Kid’s National Ambassador for the 2017-18 academic year. In this position, Roach will work with Marathon Kids to host a Leadership Academy for the community. “I am so excited,” Roach said. “I will attend training over the summer and be able to bring everything I learned back to our students and staff.” June 2017 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | 27

It’s Storm Season in Texas
I
f you haven’t had to deal with any flooding or storm damage, consider yourself lucky! Maturing landscapes, erosion, patios and pools being added all change the way our lots deal with the water they receive. A lot of times these obstacles will create places that hold water and/or don’t drain as well as they use to. Our crews have been busy with foundation drains, sump pumps, French drains, interior sheetrock, flooring and baseboard repairs. Being proactive can save you thousands when it comes to this type of water damage as well as reduce mosquito activity. Drainage inspections are a must if you’re moving onto a new property or have been noticing standing water around your current one. You should include an irrigation evaluation as well. Rain as well as neglected sprinkler systems can cause similar damage if not maintained and monitored.
Some things to look for: • Watch for water that still stands more than 4-5 hours after a rain event • Reduce your irrigation “Run” timer on spaces that won’t drain or other areas that have a noticeable drop in elevation so water doesn’t run-off and cause pooling • Take notice of areas that wash and cause
These are just a few things to keep in mind as we’re going through the rainy season here in Texas. Remember it is a good idea to address repairs or bring in a professional before you find yourself searching for towels to dry those floors or having to throw a pump in the flowerbed to keep water from getting too deep. As always we thank you for taking time out to read and hope the information we covered this month serves you well!
erosion after heavy rain • Look for loss of foundation soil, exposed house slab • Make sure sprinkler heads are distributing evenly versus being stuck in one direction or broken • Look for water coming in the weep holes from bed backup/overflow • Adjust/replace the nozzles on your irrigation heads to help reduce the amount of overwatering in certain areas • On the tighter lots you can run a common drain line addressing any standing water in the easement area as well as tying downspout lines in so that it will absorb your roof water and discharge it properly at the property’s edge or street.
