Top 10 Summer Plants

I

t seems our landscape season is in full swing already. Most of our summer annuals have started to come in and are looking great along with native grasses, perennials and other summer selections. If you’re looking to update the beds in the next few weeks, here is our list of the 2017 Top 10 Summer Plant List:

• GREEN CLOUD SAGE: Great summer selection, very low maintenance, heat tolerant and stays fuller than other varieties (not as leggy). • RED YUCCA: Great native selection has

good character, very low maintenance. • SALVIA: Does well year around, good color comes back year after year. • PENTA: Outstanding option for a north Texas annual, good color and very heat tolerant. • MULEY GRASS: Good texture, native to the area, great movement and color.

10 | LAKE CITIES LIVING

| MAY 2017

• AGAVE: Great focal point, heat tolerant, all-around good character planting. • ABELIA: Good color, heat tolerant, low growing option. • DWARF FOUNTAIN GRASS: Great frontline option, works well around rock or annual plantings, great movement. • LOROPETALUM (DIAMOND): Great contrast planting, pretty low maintenance once established. • SAVANNA HOLLY: Good option when you’re looking for some height, heat tolerant, low maintenance.

If you stick with things that are local/native to our area you will have a lot less stress when it heats up this summer and should notice a decrease in your irrigation bill at the same time. As always, if you’re looking to hire your work out give the local guys a shot first and remember to check their portfolio to ensure they can deliver on what's being promised. As the saying goes: “You get what you pay for and if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” by PJ Kratohvil of Complete Solutions completesolutionsdfw.com

Yourself

Strike A POSE by Susan Neuhalfen

I

t’s hard to find one form of exercise that works for everyone, but yoga is just that. It is excellent for the body and mind, and is suitable for all ages and all body types. Best of all, there is no chanting required.

Robyn Arbogast of Pure Synergy is a massage therapist who specializes in actual therapeutic massage. In other words, she’s not about froufrou relaxation massage, she’s all about healing through massage, nutrition and exercise. She is a big proponent of yoga not only for her clients, but for anyone who wants to be healthy. “I have clients with both emotional issues and physical issues and they all benefit from yoga,” said Robyn. “At Pure Synergy we teach poses, breath control and meditation to build a stronger you. When everything is working in harmony, you feel energized and healthy. Robyn has clients who use yoga to help curb their need for anxiety medication. Others with issues such as scoliosis use yoga to help strengthen their core and ease back pain. More recently, she has found that yoga helps those with sensory issues and depression. Robyn also talked about a modern day sickness she calls “sitting disease”. We go from sitting in a car, to sitting at a desk, to sitting in the car again and then sitting on the couch when we get home.

“We’re all sitting for so many hours,” she points out. “Our digestive system is bunched up and our organs aren’t getting proper blood flow.”

The great thing about yoga is that it’s as hard or easy as you make it, so anyone can do it. “I hear people say ‘I can’t do yoga because I’m not flexible’, said Robyn. “The truth is you do yoga to become flexible.” Yoga is also very beneficial to the immune system. So it begs the question why more men aren’t involved with yoga. “Yoga was created by men,” said Robyn whose male yoga population is slowly increasing at Pure Synergy. “ A common misperception is that we all sit around and chant, but here it’s just about getting healthy.” At Pure Synergy they offer group classes as well as individual yoga to help clients focus on the correct postures and poses. “Just like with anything you have to figure out what works for you,” said Robyn. “The good news is that yoga is great exercise for anyone and you can tailor it to fit you.”

eath cases are a complete curveball for the family left behind. They weren’t expecting it and, as a result, everything is completely off balance. When you’re suffering from the emotions that accompany severe trauma—sorrow, hopelessness, anger, denial, and finally acceptance—it makes it difficult to navigate an insurance settlement and make good decisions. Insurance settlements are complex. They involve calculations for future lost earnings, loss of companionship, medical and EMS bills, funeral expenses and the list goes on. The Importance of

Dentistry | Yourself

BABY TEETH

I

’ve been asked innumerable times in my career when detecting decay or problems in primary teeth (baby teeth)

why treatment is needed if the teeth are

“just going to fall out anyway.” There is not just one good answer, but several! First,

primary teeth are important placeholders for adult teeth. When a primary tooth is

lost prematurely, the adjacent teeth drift

into the space leaving little to no room for the adult tooth to erupt. The adult tooth may become impacted or displaced.

To correct these problems, orthodontic

treatment and sometimes oral surgery are required. Secondly, missing teeth lead

to difficulties with speech and chewing.

Any adult who has experienced a missing tooth is aware that chewing is difficult

and sometimes food has to be shifted to

the other side of the mouth. There is also more frequent accidental biting of the

tongue or cheek while eating or speaking because of the gap. Thirdly, all teeth are

important for the development of the jaws and soft tissues of the mouth. There is a fine balance between the teeth, cheeks,

tongue, and palate. Any disruption in this

balance can lead to long term problems. Lastly, a child’s self confidence can be negatively impacted when they have missing teeth. Society places great emphasis on a beautiful, healthy smile and children are no exception.

Despite these points, there are times when extracting a primary tooth is necessary. Unlike an adult tooth infection, an infected primary tooth cannot be treated and saved. The tooth requires extraction however, a space maintainer may be placed to hold the position open until the adult tooth erupts. I will also extract a problematic primary tooth in cases where it’s close exfoliating and the extraction will not disrupt the adult tooth replacing it. It is important for children to see their dentist every 6 months and practice good oral hygiene at home with twice daily brushing, once daily flossing, and supplementation with fluoride as

recommended. The ADA recommends children have their first dental checkup by the time their first tooth comes in or by their first birthday. Early intervention is always key!

T

en years ago, Jesse Leyva opened Jesse James Fit with a goal of being different from the big box fitness centers surrounding him. Leyva, a longtime fitness expert, knew he wanted to bring health and fitness to Flower Mound, but he also wanted to offer a product that no other fitness facility provided. Leyva researched area fitness centers, and quickly recognized that something was missing – a fitness facility that tailored fitness to each individual, provided a welcoming environment for all ages and fitness levels, and partnered clients with experienced trainers who care about their successes no matter how big or small. Today, Jesse James Fit is exactly that. It is roughly 7,700 square feet of pure awesome.

“We are a big family,” Leyva said. “I could tell from the very beginning that we had something different. I was never big on how gyms did things. Everyone here

What Kind Of Life Insurance Fits My Needs? You have more than one option when it

comes to choosing a life insurance policy. There are term and permanent insurance policies, as well as hybrid policies.

Determining which type of life insurance policy is best for you depends on your individual circumstances and financial goals.

Term Life Insurance Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period and offers the greatest

cost. With a term life insurance policy, your premiums will stay the same for a set amount of time, usually 10, 20, or 30 years. Term life insurance may be a good choice for debts that end, such as a mortgage, or if your funds are limited.

For many people, a combination of term

Permanent Life Insurance

Index Universal Life Insurance can be used

Permanent life insurance is different than term life insurance because it provides benefits while you’re alive and can remain in force as long as you live and as long as premiums are paid. Permanent life insurance premiums may build taxfree cash value. This means the cash accumulated can help pay your premiums in the future. You can borrow the cash value or if the policy is canceled, the cash value is sent to the policy owner. Whole life insurance, which has fixed premiums and a guaranteed cash value, and universal life insurance, which has flexible premiums and benefits, are popular types of permanent life insurance. Permanent life insurance may be a good option if you have long-term needs like income for a spouse, an inheritance for children or end-of-life expenses.

and permanent life insurance is the best solution.

Hybrid Products Life insurance products like our Farmers to get the life insurance protection that

This product combines a traditional life insurance policy and the ability to hold

accounts with growth levels based on the performance of two major stock indexes.

SPORTS IN THE NEWS:

‘TIM TEBOW BILL’

Faces Setback by Steve Gamel

A

bill that would allow home-school students in Texas to compete with public school teammates in University Interscholastic League games has been delayed from going into effect.

The bill, which has been dubbed the ‘Tim Tebow Bill’, was left pending after a Texas House Public Education Committee meeting late last month, several media outlets have reported. The bill has already

NFL standout, who was home-schooled but played public school sports. The idea behind the bill is to afford homeschool kids the same opportunities as other student-athletes and that meshing them with public school kids eliminates the threat of home-school kids having less options to compete as they get older.

But the bill also has been met with harsh criticism. According to a Dallas Morning News article, there are those who believe forcing home-school students to take a standardized test is discriminatory since public school kids do not have to. Conversely, the article states that both the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas Girls Coaches Association are against the bill being passed because it would create an imbalance in academic eligibility. Public school students are assessed by teaching professionals under state curriculum, they say, while homeschool student requirements are often unregulated. Ironically, there are more home-school kids in Texas than in all private schools combined, the article states.

elcome to Vol. 2 of a column I like to call the Gamel Funny Farm. I did one of these in the December issue of Lake Cities Living and received plenty of positive feedback as I shared random conversations and funny moments I am blessed to have with my wife and kids.

Jackson: “Ugh. Christian won’t put the movie ‘Good Burger’ on TV.” Me: “You don’t need to be watching that.” Christian: “He heard that one line and he keeps saying it over and over again.” Jackson: “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order? Hahahahahaha.” Me: “OK, let’s watch Mickey Mouse.” Christian: “Hey Dad? You know the guy in that new movie ‘Moana’ is The Rock?” Me: “Yep, sure do!”

Christian: “Wait, so I have a baseball game on Saturday? I thought it was canceled?” Leslie: “Yep. The coach for the other

would be able to show up, but now he has

Christian: “Look, Dad! It’s the Bosley hair commercial.”

Leslie: “Where’s this game [Super Bowl] being played at?”

Me: “OK???” Christian: “What, I’m just sayin’.” Me: “Well, Jackson is definitely in the Valentines spirit. He just gave me a

I know because Mimi told me.” Me: “Oh ... that Mimi.” Me: “Pro tip: For you husbands out there, add a smile emoji at the end of every text you send your wife. That way, regardless of the nature of your conversation she can never unnecessarily accuse you of being rude, upset, or short in your responses.” (Jackson likes to put leashes on our dogs, Roxy and Ruby, and walk them in our house) Jackson: “Come here, Ruby. Hold still. Why won’t you hold still?”

Leslie: “Foxboro?”

Me: “Buddy, I don’t think she likes being on the leash.”

Me: “Boston, honey.”

Jackson: “No. She likes it.”

Leslie: “Well I didn’t know!” Me: “But, you’ve been there!”

Me: “Buddy, she’s whimpering. I promise you she just wants to be left alone.”

Leslie: “Oh.”

Jackson: “Ruby. You know you like this!”

Jackson: “Daddy? I love you!” Me: “I love you too, buddy.” Jackson: “K. Can you open this cereal box for me?”
