FLOAT & FLY Comes Back to
Lake Dallas

T
hey say the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.
Gerald Sanders would probably agree. “Most of us grew up playing with model airplanes,” he said about his fellow Falcon’s Flying Club members. “Then you’re focused on your career and family and then you get to an age where you can go and do it again.” Sanders is referring to his hobby of flying remote control airplanes. As the treasurer of the Falcon Flying Club, he and his 75-member club pilot radio-controlled and gas engine planes. Those participating are true plane enthusiasts. They build the planes themselves, either from kits or from scratch. They meet once a month for fun, educational meetings, whether it be about new advances in equipment or a guest speaker who used to fly with the Blue Angels. They also love getting together during the week to fly their seaplanes over Lake Dallas, and we’re not talking about little planes, either. “It’s just like a full size plane with all the bells and whistles,” said Sanders. “The one I fly at Float Fly has a 10 foot wingspan and weighs 40 pounds.” Float Fly is an annual event and a great opportunity for the public to see these planes flying over Lake Dallas. This is the 15th year that Sanders and his colleagues have put on the event that took place Saturday, August 13 starting at Willow Grove Park. The

When asked how they decide when a plane
takes its “turn” at Float Fly, Sanders explained
that most planes will either run out of gas or battery pretty quickly. He is, however, quick to
point out that electronics have advanced in the last few years. It used to be that the plane would
only fly for about 8 minutes. Now, depending on the plane, it will stay up much longer.
As for the planes themselves, they are designed
to mimic the inner workings of an exact plane. The only thing missing is the pilot

THANK YOU With the recent events of violence towards police officers that occurred in the metroplex and nationwide, agencies across the country have noticed a substantial increase in the outpouring of support from community members. The men and women of the Corinth Police Department have also received an outpouring of support from the Lake Cities community. We had citizens stop by to give us cards, sandwiches, and other treats. We also had some who just wanted to stop by and hug a police officer. A tragedy has a way of bringing people together, as we mourn as one. We just wanted to say thank you for the tremendous outpouring of love and support you showed each of us during those dark hours. SEPTEMBER 2016 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | 9
Business Coach
The Personal Touch(es) Have you ever… • Called a company for a quote and never got a return phone call? • Described your future needs to a business, got an enthusiastic response, and then nothing happened? • Met someone at a networking event, agreed to take a call, and never heard from them again?
T
hese head-scratching scenarios happen all too often in businesses both large and small. Obvious opportunities to sell, provide service or nurture a relationship go unexploited. Hours of time and thousands of dollars spent marketing, networking and advertising are wasted. Legitimate leads are never converted to sales due to perceived disinterest. The way people buy is changing, and one of the big changes is that in our content-centric, options-filled world, buyers require more touches with businesses before they decide to buy. Those numerous touches — as many as 7, 10, 13 or even more depending on who you read and how they count – require a strategy for developing a personal relationship that complements a customer’s interest in specific features and benefits. Chances are they can find features, benefits and prices similar to yours with a few clicks. But why should prospects consider your company at the moment they’re ready to actually buy? They will consider you if they know you and you know them, not just as buyer and seller, but as people who are comfortable with each other, respect each other and recognize their mutual interests.
10 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2016
Wait. What if YOU own the business that does the poor job of follow-up as I described earlier? As a business coach I meet hundreds of entrepreneurs each year. I believe strongly that all the business I could ever need is linked to the few hundred people I already know – not the 10,000 on some email list I could buy. Here’s the sad truth: less than 5% of small business owners are effective at following up with their contacts (even when there are obvious sales opportunities, as I described above). All the excuses get trotted out: I’m too busy; they know how to reach me; it takes too much time; I don’t want to bug them; and on and on. If you’re building sales nothing substitutes for deliberately nurturing relationships with a big pool of qualified prospects (set a goal to have at least 500). For example, within 24 hours of meeting someone new, send them a personal note letting them know how much you enjoyed meeting them (handwritten will instantly distinguish you). Or thank them in email and attach something informative that you know, from talking with them, they’ll read and appreciate. Ask to connect with them on Facebook and/or LinkedIn. If they acknowledge receipt of your note, then within 7 days touch
them again and suggest a cup of coffee. Your
goal isn’t to sell: it is to deepen the relationship. If they don’t acknowledge your note, push out the next touch to 30 days, but don’t stop trying
to connect. Keep your name in front of them and continue to share ways in which you can
help them with their business. Newsletters are
one way, but my preferred way is to write short, personal “thinking of you” notes with articles, “how-to” tips or recommended links.

Lake Cities Business Owners
A
UNITE fter the recent police tragedies in Dallas and other U.S. cities, some local businesses have come together to lead a city-wide Back the Blue initiative to help Lake Cities demonstrate respect and unity for its hometown law enforcement heroes.
Mark Tucker, a local Allstate Insurance agent, Scott Fly, General Manager of Toyota of Denton and Kevin Pyle, owner of Pro Care Collision, have joined forces to provide Lake Cities Backs the Blue ribbons, car stickers and window signs to display its appreciation for the men and women in blue. “With everything going on this year with law enforcement it’s important that we show the police officers our appreciation,” said Tucker, whose office is located in Hickory Creek. “I hope everyone shows them that we’re supporting everything that they do.” This city-wide Back the Blue ribbon campaign will be in full effect the weeks of September 26th - October 8th. The residents of Lake Cities simply have to stop by one of the business to pick up their ribbon, car sticker or window sign and start showing North Texas that no one backs our police officers like the citizens of Lake Cities. There will also be other opportunities to honor them such as a cookout at Mark Tucker’s office and a coffee and donuts reception at Toyota of Denton. “The great thing about this community is that everybody here is on the same team,” said Fly. “My biggest concern is running out of ribbons in an hour.” Pro Care Collision is new to the Lake Cities area but owner Kevin Pyle was only too happy to show his appreciation to the local law enforcement. “Sometimes we forget how fortunate we are to live in such a safe community,” said Pyle. “We owe that to the police departments around the area.” 16 | LAKE CITIES LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2016
This group of business leaders has also joined cooperative forces with Lake Dallas ISD to rally residents and businesses during homecoming week. The Lake Cities will be decorated with blue ribbons to brighten the roads and neighborhoods while anticipating the arrival of many visiting alumnae for homecoming week. They are hoping that residents will tie the ribbons on trees, mailboxes and wherever they think the officers will see them. What better way to show the Lake Cities pride and as well as the support our officers? Lake Cities Backs the Blue souvenirs will also be thrown out from the floats at the LDISD Homecoming parade on Monday, September 26. After the parade, stop by the pep rally to meet local police and get your souvenirs signed along with a commemorative photo in the Lake Cities Backs the Blue photo booth. They will also give the public opportunities to meet and greet the police at Mark Tucker’s Quarterback Club tailgate party before the Homecoming game. Lake Cities Backs the Blue will honor three area police departments: Corinth, Hickory Creek and Lake Dallas. Each has its own police chief and each its own force but there is kinship between them the you often don’t find in neighboring communities. “They help us and we help them,” explained Debra Walthall, City of Corinth Police Chief. “If they need backup we can make the call and visa versa.” Hickory Creek Police Chief Carey Dunn agreed that they always have an open line of communication between them.
to Back the Blue by Susan Neuhalfen
“Our needs are so close that we talk all the time about what’s going on,” said Dunn. When asked about the support the community has given them since the tragedy in Dallas, all of the officers said that ther departments have been overwhelmed. “We have a place on the website where people can fill out complaints or compliments,” said Lake Dallas Police Chief Nick Ristagno, “We are getting a lot of compliments these days. Lake Dallas Teacher Named Regional Teacher Of The Year
Lake Dallas Elementary Students Read To Succeed
Lake Dallas High School Band Director Denise Kennedy was named the 2016 Region 11 Secondary Teacher of the Year. Kennedy was honored along with all of the teachers of the year from school districts in the north central Texas region at an awards banquet hosted by the Education Service Center Region 11. Kennedy has served as an associate director and a director of bands at Lake Dallas ISD since 2009. “You can feel her determination and grit,” commented one judge. “I can just see her class filled with all of these students with varying developmental skills – and they’re all learning.” The Teacher of the Year Program, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Administrators, allows districts to submit one elementary and one secondary candidate to compete at the regional and state levels. Sixty-four teachers, representing 35 school districts in Region 11, participated in this year’s competition.
Five Lake Dallas Elementary students have successfully completed the summer reading program at Lewisville Public Library. Addie Clemens (4th), Alaina Clemens (5th), Kasey Mack (3rd), Haley Mack (2nd) and Aubree Manis (1st) completed the program by reading at least 25 books, hours, or days over the summer break.

You Need To Know About W
ith the football season officially in full swing, the threat of concussions is an ever-present issue. While there is currently no full-proof way to entirely prevent head injuries in football, one major equipment manufacturer is staying on top of its own product safety standards. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, Xenith and the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a voluntary recall in August for Xenith’s recently manufactured helmets. The recall involved Xenith EPIC Varsity, X2 Varsity, X2E varsity and youth football helmets with a gloss or metallic-painted polycarbonate shell sold or factory-reconditioned between May 1, 2015 and March 18, 2016. Xenith explained on its website that a “flex” chemical additive compound was not added to the paint

mixture, which caused the other components of the helmet to become brittle. There were no injuries, though the CPSC received reports of 29 shells cracking. Per that same Dallas Morning News article, the EPIC Varsity, X2 Varsity and X2E Varsity all rank as five stars in the widely-used Virginia Tech helmet rating system. The EPIC Varsity was also the No. 1 helmet in the NFL’s 2015 health and safety report. The X2E ranked No. 4. Helmet safety standards at area schools have come a long way in recent years. School officials consistently purchase new helmets while reconditioning older ones in an effort to put the best and safest equipment on players.
The Dallas Morning News said there were at
least 11 high schools in the area that had Xenith
helmets in their inventory, but that particular
manufacturer was not their primary provider. None of those 11 schools appear to be in the immediate area.
When contacted earlier this month, Guyer
football coach John Walsh said his program
has an exclusive relationship with Riddell and
has at no point used Xenith helmets. Argyle and Lake Dallas also use Riddell. Lake Dallas
uses an estimated 60/40 split with Schutt. Liberty Christian head coach Barton Hundley confirmed his program is exclusively Riddell.

TRUST ME
You’re Children’s Future May Depend on It! by Adam Burrows
O
ne of the most important roles in life is that of a parent. All parents have a duty to love, protect and help their children grow into adulthood. This is a duty that entails that we as parents have to keep our children’s best interests in mind before our own. A parent has to make tough decisions and sacrifices on a daily basis. One of the most important decisions that a parent can make is to invest in their children’s future. As an Estate Planning Attorney, my role
is to help my clients understand that the decisions we make in life for our children may
not be what we intended after we pass away. As I explain to my clients, leaving a great sum
of money for your children may be a great
idea but without parameters, this blessing
may soon turn into a curse with unintended consequences for your children. A Living
Trust allows the structure that your children desperately need to help provide for their
health, education and way of life for many years to come.
Most people have a preconceived notion
that Trusts are for rich people. The truth
is, that EVERYONE can benefit from a Trust and most importantly so can your children. Think about it, if you passed away today and everything you own went to your children will they truly know how to manage the responsibility of a sizeable inheritance? Will they know how to invest and save for the future? It is my passion to make sure that your children are protected until they reach the age to manage the gift that you left for their future. What is that age? Every child is different, but that is why we plan ahead. As I tell my clients, if a sizeable inheritance was given to me at the age of 18 or 19 the first place I would have found myself would have been at a new car dealership buying a Porsche! I face these same decisions that all parents are faced with because I too am a parent. As I help you plan for your children’s future, I also take into careful consideration the steps I have taken and would take to protect my own child’s future. It boils down to this… Is it going to be a trip to the Porsche dealership or a financially secure future for your children? Let me help you make that decision while it is still yours to make.

Commitment to
Fitness
EXCELLENCE by Jesse J. Leyva, Jesse James Fit & Outlaw Bootcamp 940.497.6002
W
e commit to a lot of things in life. But how often do we commit to ourselves, and do it with 100% excellence and focus? Have we gotten use to settling for what falls easily into our laps? Mediocrity is the “new normal” nowadays.
It’s also the “new normal” to be 40 pounds
overweight, to be on three to five medications, and unfortunately, to accept failure after only
giving 40 – 60 percent of yourself to a project. It’s time to push beyond mediocrity and make a commitment to excellence.
So, what are you committed to? Are you
committed to being the best YOU that you can be? Are you committed to making positive change a new household habit? Is working toward bettering yourself and your family a priority worth your commitment?
Of course it is. By having a strong commitment
to excellence, you will find yourself striving
harder than ever to accomplish things that you
would normally think to be out of reach. You will also find yourself addicted to new things –
positive things – like success in new directions or endeavors.
For instance, in the early part of 2016, we ran a Transformation Challenge at our Jesse James Fit Flower Mound location. It was amazing to see personal goals – once thought unattainable – take shape within the challenge. We extended our categories from men’s and women’s to add a most transformed couples category. After all, what better way to achieve a goal than to do it together? With the new challenge category, we saw an incredible turnout of couples, families and friends, who pushed each other to reach excellence. Let’s face it, without support, it’s easy to blow off a workout, talk yourself out of the gym or find excuses to eat something you know you may regret later. But remember, things worth achieving take commitment and dedication. Prioritizing and focusing on your goal—why it’s important and what it means to you and your family—are the driving force behind your success. We all know that when we’re committed and dedicated to a goal, it makes it all the sweeter to achieve. Our Transformation Challenge is designed to push you to commit yourself and your family’s health front and center on the to-do list. To understand it’s okay to take care of yourself and give 100 percent to your goals, whether they are fitness related or not. Staying focused from start to finish is a hard task for most, because
when the going gets tough, most quit. But it’s
during the uncomfortable stages and overcoming obstacles along the journey, when transformation
truly happens. That is when mediocrity loses and
excellence wins, when you find the time to do your cardio by waking up earlier. It’s when you
organize your time so that you can fit in one more workout during the week. When you have a burning desire to make it happen.
I challenge you to jot down three things that
are important to you that need 100 percent commitment to accomplish. Next, analyze
your schedule and see where you can make
improvements to reach those goals. Do you need to eliminate a few things that are less important
or be more creative about scheduling your time?
If waking up earlier to do cardio is a challenge, think about how great you’ll feel eight weeks down the road when you see the results. It’s
worth it, right? If the answer is YES, then what’s
stopping you from achieving this goal. Don’t be an obstacle in your own path.
If health and fitness are on your priority list,
please visit us and join our challenges to work toward your personal best with the best! Outlaw
Bootcamp, voted Denton County’s best indoor bootcamp, and Jesse James Fit voted best personal
trainers are here to assist you towards YOUR personal best!

There is a difference in having someone that’s
