Perhaps you have noticed the Little Free Library located at the Rayl Family Park (3402 Pueblo Trail) that is filled with books for you to take, read, return, or pass along? If not, we highly recommend you check it out. It is all part of building community and making communities better through book sharing. A neighborhood Little Free Library offers a fun, free way for anyone to find a new page-turner.

The Little Free Library (LFL) is the world’s largest book sharing program. Each Little Free Library is simply an enclosed box fixed to a pole. It is essentially a library in its most basic form, and it costs nothing for visitors to borrow a book or leave one for others to enjoy.

The Little Free Library, a non-profit organization, has been honored by the Library of Congress and the National Book Foundation for its work in creating book access for so many people. There are over 100,000 registered LFL boxes in 50 states and 108 countries. In fact, there are now Little Free Libraries on all seven continents, including Antarctica! To date, the movement has seen more than 165 million books shared worldwide.

Summer Reading Matters

There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.

The Mary Lou Reddick Public Library’s free Summer Reading Program is a fun way to encourage kids to keep reading and learning during the summer months. To join, just stop by the library or join online using the Reader Zone app. You can earn prizes by simply tracking your time spent reading! The library is located at 7005 Charbonneau Road. For more information, call 817.237.9681.

Some of the benefits of a summer reading programming for children are:

• Children are motivated to read.

• Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library.

• Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.

• Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.

Additionally, here are tips for making summer reading fun for the whole family:

• Take a weekly trip to the library to pick out new books to read aloud, read independently or read side-by-side. • Choose a chapter book to read aloud to the whole family for 30 minutes each day.

• Let kids choose their reading material (at least some of the time). When kids can pick a book that interests them, they are more likely to stick with it.

“I THINK WE ALL CAN BE A PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES.”

Meet Local Artist Erica Rosa

Erica Rosa has been an artist all her life. She moved to Fort Worth, Texas from North Carolina three years ago with her husband and eight children. She homeschooled her children for many years, but as they have gotten older, she has been able to focus more energy and time on being creative. Erica’s passion is to make art fun and accessible to everyone.

As she explains, “I think our world has become so fast paced that sometimes we lose the wonder of creativity and just enjoying life. Doing art is a way for me to slow down, focus, and express emotions. I love including others in art projects, especially when they do not feel they are capable, because I believe everyone was created to create. I think we all can be a part of something bigger than ourselves and working as a community to do a mural is a great way to demonstrate that. I love seeing children and families being creative together; watching people

who think they aren’t ‘artistic’ help paint; then stand back and realize, ‘Hey, that looks good, I did that!’”

Erica was recently commissioned by the City of Lake Worth for a community mural project at Lake Worth Park. The project will culminate in a collaborative community painting event over two Saturdays on April 24 to May 1, 10 AM - 2 PM. Families can sign up for

the event by calling 817.237.9681.
