M
y father loved the game of football. He played when men played because they loved the
game. Back then, most of those men who played professionally had a second job
because it wasn’t enough to pay the bills. Even Roger Staubach worked as a real
estate broker during the offseason while
playing for the Cowboys. He had a family to provide for and football was not a stable job in the 1970s.
I loved football mostly because I loved and respected my dad so much.
This will mark my second Thanksgiving
without football and the fifth Thanksgiving without my father. Since Colin Kaepernick began his protest, football has lost its magic for me. Like most Americans, I
have protested back by not supporting
sponsors and not watching the games. It
has impacted the sponsors as well as the NFL’s bottom line and they are reacting because, after all, football is now a business before it’s a game.
I can’t help but ask myself, what are we DOING? I think that’s the problem. We aren’t DOING anything. For years we’ve heard about “having a conversation” but it took losing viewers, money and sponsors to take that first step. What was the result of the first meeting between players and owners? Darned if I know. Football should be a uniting factor, not a dividing factor. We should be working together to solve our problems as a nation instead of using entertainment as a platform to further divide us. Unfortunately, all of the entertainment industry seems to want to divide us. The truth is, they are all about protesting and drawing attention to themselves. I have yet to hear any of them come forward with a solution or even a request. I believe the ball (so to speak) is in the court of the NFL players. You have our attention. What do you want us to DO?

many of those who are homeless are

new dream to reality: the Grace Like Rain Community Village.
“Our original vision was a large
house where several families would
live,” said Michelle. “Now our plan is
several ‘tiny’ houses, each about 875 square feet, in which families could live while in transition.”
Affordable housing is limited in
Denton County and more families
are finding themselves in a downward spiral of homelessness. The GLR Community Village would provide families the affordable housing they need in a community that would act as a support network for each other while they work toward a more stable, financial situation. “They will pay rent and we will be working with them to save money,” said Michelle. “Once they are ready, they will transition out of the community to something larger within a neighboring community.”

level on their music, we celebrate their achievement and then point them to
ways they can continue to advance their
playing. We show them ways to “level up,” just like playing a video game.”
Harpool had one student who was
especially nervous preparing to play a solo for the Denton ISD Solo and
Ensemble Competition. The student was
having a tough time with self-confidence, but was encouraged by peers, Ms. Ortiz and Mr. Napier to practice a lot and
simulate performances before the actual
event. This student performed for friends and other teachers in the school, which lead to some “light bulb” moments
and more confidence. The student was
able to confidently play their solo at the
competition and earned a “Superior” 1st Division score.
“The self-confidence that is built carries
over to other subjects and other parts of their lives, too,” Ortiz pointed out.
“It also gives students an outlet to express emotion without the need to be verbal.” As a child, Ortiz was shy and found it very hard to verbally communicate. Playing an instrument was a way for her to really tap into her emotions. Just like when a favorite song comes on, it lifts the mood. When asked what’s the best part about playing an instrument? According to Ortiz, it is that there is no age limit. “Learning to play an instrument is a skill that you can take with you throughout life,” she said. “You can learn to play and continue to enjoy playing at any age. “

Ortiz and Napier can’t emphasize enough the amount of benefits that can be
achieved by learning orchestra at this age. “Playing music stretches your brain in
ways that other subjects can’t,” she said. November 2017 | LANTANA LIVING | 15

ationally renowned artist Jan Sitts will be teaching a handson workshop of vibrant textural
acrylic paintings at the Art House Highland Village location across from Best Buy. The workshop will take place from December 6-9.
Sitts, author of TextureColorFeeling,
specializes in layered and experimental art. She teaches students how to
understand layering color and executing shapes and texture to bring a new
creativity to their work. By combining
aggressive textures and unusual mediums
with various “raw” materials in the abstract painting, Sitts says that the students get surprising results.
“It requires different painting habits,
breaking the paradigm,” said Sitts. “Once
armed with knowledge of the possibilities of various mixed media techniques,
creativity and spontaneity are endless.” At the end of the workshop students
will have the opportunity to display their works at the ART house gallery for the
evening which includes a meet and greet with Jan Sitts who will be on hand to personally sign her book.

f you’re looking for inspiration, look no further than the owner of Cloud9 Spa, Salon and Boutique, Kim Cloud Skidmore.
Kim Skidmore
“There’s not much that we don’t do,” said Kim about Cloud9’s stand alone two-story building in Flower Mound. “We have about every service you can imagine and I’m blown away by the talent here.” Cloud9 now has 37 stylists, specializing in everything from color to innovative cuts to special occasion styles, nails, waxing, all facial services, lash extensions, brow blading and massage. The atmosphere downstairs is upbeat and friendly. It’s not loud and raucous like some salons, but rather fun and relaxing with a wonderful energy surrounding it.

Kim was only 19 when she started working as a stylist, a newlywed with a baby. Within five months she became an accidental business owner when the owner of the salon where she worked decided to close shop abruptly. In order to keep the staff and the salon open, Kim had to quickly learn some hard lessons, in business and in life, and she’s never stopped learning. Today, that salon she saved in a practically abandoned strip center, is now in its own building, a 8200 square foot destination.

This is the drum roll part of my story. Because this is what Bistecca Italian Steakhouse did for me.
This past Friday, my boyfriend was

if I could bring my own meal in order to be able to enjoy a wonderful night out

o be successful at fitness and obtain a healthier lifestyle, setting goals is key. But it’s not always easy to meet those goals, especially alone. Large warehouse gyms can be overwhelming, and carving out even a 30-minute-workout from an already packed schedule can seem impossible. So how do you find success when making fitness goals? Try creating a support system. Regardless of a person’s age or fitness level, personal training is an excellent way to live a healthier lifestyle and reach your fitness goals. An experienced personal trainer works alongside you to set fitness goals, teach proper form and practice, and create a unique fitness plan specific to your body mechanics and fitness level. Above all, a trainer motivates to get the most out of each workout.
Personal training can be beneficial for:
Couples Couples that work out together, stay together. Studies show that after participating in a physical challenge or activity, couples feel more satisfied with
their relationships and more in love with their partner. Training together, couples understand each other’s goals, and can encourage each other throughout their fitness journeys.
Seniors Exercise becomes ever more important as we age. In our later years, injuries are often the beginning of a downward spiral of poor health and quality of life. Exercise, on the other hand, improves strength and balance, and has even been found to increase or preserve bone mass, critical in preventing osteoporosis.
Youth Fitness and health is just as important to teenagers, especially young athletes, as it is to adults. In young people, strength training can improve coordination,
increase muscle endurance and improve sport performance. Aside from the physical health benefits, exercise can also help develop a better self-image and increase self-confidence.
For all the good intentions, fitness and exercise can understandably become overwhelming, but with the help of others, success is closer at hand and so are the results. Consider starting a program this winter for a healthier spring and summer. Jesse James Fit offers group and individual training, great for all ages and fitness levels in an encouraging, fun environment where everyone benefits. and cognitive health. Our brains use 20-30 percent of all our calories. Calories from processed and fried foods hurt the brain, calories from whole foods feed it. The research shows brains can heal and change. Good diet, exercise and reduction of toxins is key. Researchers like Dr. Daniel Amen are leading the charge on how the foods we eat affect mood, depression, cognitive ability, memory, and overall brain function. As it turns out what is good for the heart and body is also good for the brain: clean
Kids are adaptable and can be taught to eat healthy; it must be modeled and encouraged. Their little brains do not have a chance and they certainly will not be working on full potential without healthy foods. Once again the number one thing you can do for your brain for development and healthy aging is to get off processed and fried foods. Notice the majority are plant-based foods. Notice how many of these foods that kids love. It is becoming very clear that food truly matters. Did you have any of these
items today to get through your school or work day? Did your children’s brains get any of these foods? The Amen clinics are having great success in treating everything from depression, ADD, memory loss, and even traumatic brain injury. They have had great success working with the NFL and veterans, and have scanned and studied more brains than any other research group. If you are interested in the research, go to www.amenclinics.com. The lifestyle section on the clinic’s site has a host of recipes to enjoy. Remember when you are feeding your kids you are feeding their bodies and brains.

Harmon had previously narrowed his list of college choices to five, including the Sooners, Texas, Baylor, Marquette, and Oklahoma State. “I’m happy all of this is behind me,” Harmon told the Denton RecordChronicle. “I’m excited — I really am. I get to step on the court with my brothers here at Guyer and make a run toward a state championship. The goal is to be playing that weekend right before spring break in March. It’s a process. This summer, he led the U.S. U16 Men’s National Team to a gold medal at the FIBA America’s U16 Championship in Formosa, Argentina. Harmon scored 13 points in a 111-60 win over Canada in the finals. 60 | LANTANA LIVING
