2019 T he holiday season is in full swing, and 2019 is fast approaching where did the time go? It seems
like just yesterday we were sending the kiddos back to school in triple-digit temperatures, and I can remember
ringing in 2018 with family and friends
Enjoy your family, cherish your friends, always be kind, laugh often, and make the best of the bad days.
like it happened last week. They say time flies when you’re having fun and, while
I’d be willing to bet that you still learned
That’s what I love about life – you never know what the next day is going to bring (or in this case, the next year) and often the unexpected challenges are the ones that help us grow the most. So we’ll make our resolutions, and we’ll try to keep them longer than a month, but we should also remember not to be too hard on ourselves and instead take life as it comes. Enjoy your family, cherish your friends, always be kind, laugh often, and make the best of the bad days.
this year. I know I did.
Happy Holidays & Cheers to 2019!
I definitely had a lot of fun this year, my favorite thing to look back on are all of the things I learned and all of the challenges I overcame.
As we start to ponder on New Year’s
resolutions and how we’re going to make 2019 better than the last, I urge you all to reflect on 2018 – the good, the bad,
and the ugly. Regardless of whether you
nailed every one of your 2018 resolutions, and grew in ways that you never expected

arson Ozmer says he and his buddies on the Guyer baseball team only need 15 or 20 minutes to transform an elderly person’s home this holiday season with a few strands of thoughtfully placed Christmas lights. Then it’s on to the next house, and the next one after that … and the next one after that. “[How fast we can do it] also depends on how many guys we have helping out,” said Carson, who lives in Lantana. Carson, a junior, had no problem drumming up plenty of help on December 8 when he, his friends, and family showed up for the annual Hearts for Homes Christmas Basket and Decoration Day. Hearts for Homes is a Christian-based outreach ministry that provides no-cost home repairs and other essentials to low-income elderly homeowners in Denton County.
10 years now. The biggest advantage for didn’t mind having younger children
helping out with certain projects, which meant her kids could get involved and understand the value of lending a
helping hand to those less fortunate than they are. As they got older, her
kids naturally took on bigger volunteer roles in the organization.
Gina added that she’s incredibly proud of her boys for putting their personal stamp
on such a worthy cause. She also thanked the Lantana community for the donations for this year’s baskets.
The organization, started in 2006 by
“Garett got the idea from talking to one
of volunteers and help from churches,
had never had Christmas lights before,”
Susan Frank, has relied on its legion
schools, and businesses to collect, sort,
and distribute baskets of non-perishable food items and household gifts to its
growing list of recipients who could use a
helping hand during the holidays. But two years ago, Carson’s brother, Garett, who was on the organization’s Homeowner’s
Relations Committee before he graduated last June, concocted the idea of putting up Christmas lights for those who wanted them.
And just like that, a wild day of selfless giving got even bigger thanks to the
hearts of so many selfless residents. After
his brother graduated, Carson didn’t think twice about carrying on the tradition.
“I love doing it; it gives me satisfaction
knowing these elders are loved on during this special time of year,” Carson said.
customer who was 82 years old. She
Gina said. “He spoke to Pat Watson, the baseball coach at Guyer, and the team
immediately jumped onboard. Naturally, Carson wanted to continue that. So we all show up on the same day, and the
players go out with their trucks to put
up all the lights. Then they come back
to the warehouse and start helping put together baskets.”
“The people we are helping … so many
of them are by themselves and really look forward to a day like this,” Gina said.
Hearts for Homes holds special events such as its Christmas Basket and
Decoration Day throughout the year and handle everything from monetary help
and simple donations of essential items to repairing roof leaks, handling home
rehabilitation, and more. Its clients come from all over Denton County.
“I love getting my teammates together. They just want to help, too. Honestly, I could see myself doing this when I come home from college and even
when I’m older, and I’ve had my own kids,” Carson said. Pictured above is Garett and Carson Ozmer helping set up Christmas lights. 8 | LANTANA LIVING

GETTING To YOU? by Susan Neuhalfen
‘T
Problem:
Having to be with family tends to be a
really big stressor for many. One may have to have Christmas dinner at her husband’s house but she hates her sister-in-law, etc. How do you cope with family stress? Solution:
Remind yourself that you’re not going to
see the family, you’re going to spend time with your husband and it’s important to
him. Now, pull back and think about who
else will be there. Do you hate all of them? Chances are, you don’t. Reframe your
perception of the idea or activity; stop
focusing on the negative (i.e., your sisterin-law). The stress will not be eliminated,
but by not focusing on the negative, you
is the season for present-giving, New Year’s resolutions, eating, parties and, of course, family. What should be one big happy couple of weeks can become very stressful. Life in Castle Hills sat down with Wayne Cagle, a licensed professional counselorsupervisor at Lifeworks in Carrollton. Mr. Cagle listed some of biggest contributing factors to holiday stress, but instead of just discussing the problems that arise, he gave solutions as to how to deal with these issues:
If you have lost your job, see where you can cut back. Take some time and make a list of all of your expenses monthly, weekly, annually, etc. What can you do without?
will lessen the stress and make the activity
Finally, find out if there is a way to “pass” on some of the Christmas presents this year. In some families, the adults don’t exchange presents. See if that is acceptable within your family.
Problem:
LOSS OF RELATIONSHIPS
baked, it isn’t the end of the world. This
Problem: Many people lose their jobs just before the holidays and there isn’t a lot of hiring going on during the holiday season. This causes an extra amount of stress for people during a time where more money is spent than usual.
Problem: Whether it be divorce, death, or simply the loss of a relationship, people realize that something is missing during the holidays. With the loss, traditions change, and change is always hard. The thing is, grief doesn’t actually go away, it just changes. Some may not even go into the grief consciously, it’s the holidays that remind them subconsciously.
Solution: We don’t have control over losing a job; we only have control over what we do. Before you find yourself in this situation, take a good look at your lifestyle. If this happened, how long could you survive? Try to take yourself out of debt and, if possible, put some money into an “untouchable” savings account now.
Solution: The good news is that with the passage of time, things get better every year. Instead of turning that moment into grief, celebrate the person you’ve lost. Remember the good times and start a new tradition in order to remember the best in that person. This will help everyone to cope.

easier. Many times, the things we dread
the most aren’t anywhere near as bad as we think they will be.
STRIVING FOR PERFECTION The perception that you’re a bad person if your children’s Christmas isn’t perfect is hogwash. If the tree isn’t perfectly
trimmed and the cookies aren’t perfectly isn’t a competition. Solution:
Think back to your favorite holidays. Were they great because of a gift? Were they great because the turkey was perfectly cooked? The best gifts are memories.
Try this: let your kids decorate the tree
however they desire and leave that way. The memory of the activity will likely
stand out longer in their memory than a perfectly trimmed tree.
The most important thing to remember,
according to Mr. Cagle, is to focus on the positive. Your expectation automatically assumes reality. Stress cannot be
completely eliminated. You have to have
stress in your life; the trick is to manage it so it doesn’t manage you.

This Holiday Season by Steve Gamel
T
he holidays are a great time to slow down, take some time off work, and spend precious moments with family. The only problem is that if you have relatives coming into town to spend four, five, or even six days with you, it can be a challenge keeping everyone entertained – especially after all the presents have been opened and you’ve had your fill of egg nog.
The good news is there are plenty of family-friendly activities throughout Denton County and beyond, even for those of you who want something a little different. You just have to plan ahead. Below is a variety of events and activities that, at a minimum, will help get those creative wheels spinning.
Board and Brush Creative Studio – 2230 Justin Rd. #220 Highland Village, TX 75077 If you simply want a fun activity that doesn’t necessarily have to do with the holidays, then Board and Brush may be up your ally. They are your local go-to shop for creative woodworking projects and DIY classes. No experience is necessary; just bring your creativity. Check out their website at boardandbrush.com for their calendar of private events.
Volunteer Your Time This is the time of year when we should all take advantage of opportunities to give back. Local organizations like Ranch Hand Rescue, local animal shelters, and even the Christian Community Action Food Pantry all need our help this holiday season. Take the entire family out and volunteer a few hours of your time to do something for someone else.

glance over to make sure you didn’t put an unnecessary apostrophe in your family’s last name. Trust me; it’s a massive grammar faux pas. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about: WRONG: Merry Christmas from the Gamel’s CORRECT: Merry Christmas from the Gamels While the correct version admittedly looks a little weird to most people, using the apostrophe actually makes your last name
possessive. I see this mistake being made time and time again,
so I thought, why not give a quick tutorial just in case you’ve fallen into this trap once again.
If the last letter of your last name ends in a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, t, u, v, w, y ... simply add an s to the end of your name.

Whether you have a great relationship with your kids, or you have been struggling with them lately, maintaining or rebuilding a healthy parent-child relationship over the holidays can be challenging. Here are a few things you can try that might make a difference for you and for your child.

Everyone likes receiving a letter in the mail, especially around the holidays. It makes us feel special, and children are no different. The purpose of this letter is to recognize all of the positive characteristics you see in your child. Maybe you see them as brave, smart, kind, talented, loving, or any other positive adjective you can think of. Use this as an opportunity to let them know about all of the positive qualities you see in them. Christmas cards are a great way to do this. Instead of just buying a card and signing it, write in it and tell them exactly how much they mean to you. You always see the commercials or Facebook posts about how relieved or happy parents are when their kids finally go back to school. Maybe that doesn’t have to be you this year and you can end the holiday break with an even better parent-child relationship than when it started.

the lives of our deserving veterans. Marine Justin Rie and Navy member Jordan
DeArmond established a foundation
called Operation Mutt 22, which trains and delivers service dogs to veterans
who return home suffering from extreme emotional and physical trauma that is often too difficult to overcome alone.
The foundation stemmed from Rie and DeArmond's personal experiences in
the military. Rie, for example, came back experiencing PTSD from the field. With
hesitation, he accepted his wife’s advice to get a service dog.
To receive a service dog through Veteran Affairs is roughly a three-year process
– an overwhelmingly long wait time for
those men and women who have served our country.
Rie and DeArmond's foundation can do so much faster while training the dogs
on their own with no charge to veterans. Since their vision’s inception, Operation Mutt 22 has now gone nationwide.
Beginning with basic obedience training,
the team gradually guides them to behave appropriately in various environments and
teaches the dog to serve the specific need of the veteran –whether that be PTSD
alerting, seizure response, or serving as a mobility or stability partner.

“After Justin shared his story, I realized
how important these dogs are in the lives
of our veterans. His story spoke to me and became pressed on my heart to bring awareness to the importance of service dogs,” Clark said. Operation Mutt 22 is now training Clark’s dog, River. Clark offers her business expertise and is a dedicated activist for the foundation. The trainers at Operation Mutt 22 are committed to instructing these amazing animals promptly and to be of assistance throughout a veteran’s journey with their dog. Veterans are encouraged to send an application for a service dog to operationmutt22@gmail.com and visit the foundation’s Facebook page Operation Mutt 22 to view River’s story and others on the impact of service dogs. ROOTED In The
Community by Steve Gamel
W
hen it comes to giving back, there are plenty of community-minded business owners who selflessly go out of their way to get more involved. Dr. Matthew Artho and his staff at Country Lakes Family Dental are no different, but if you aspire to emulate a page from their deeply rooted community playbook, you better be prepared to take two.
That’s because the list of organizations and charitable causes this practice supports each year financially is seemingly endless, not to mention the time they spend donating their time on the front lines at local events. As Dr. Matt explains, there’s no magic pill to being so rooted in the community. It’s simply what they do. “When you look at our practice and the way we do things in this office, we are extremely focused on our patients. But our patients have lives outside of our office, and we want to support those as well,” Dr. Matt said. “I take being rooted in our community very seriously, but it’s not just me. If you feel some are dragging you down with negativity, this is a cleansing time and most likely the best time to distance yourself from negativity because it can be the worst obstacle along your journey. The message I want everyone to know is taking care of yourself starts in the mirror, the person staring back needs your help more than you realize. Until you release the negative obstacles around you, can you begin to truly find happiness with yourself, friends, family, work, love and life? Brazilian blowouts are a smoothing treatment that actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. MAKE SURE YOUR
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
STICK
42 | LANTANA LIVING
| DECEMBER 2018
W
e are inching closer to Christmas, which means the calendar will soon flip to the New Year and everyone will break out those pie-in-the-sky resolutions. Sadly, very few of us will follow through.
Wow; talk about a Debbie-Downer statement to usher in 2019, right? But you and your friends here at Murray Media all know it to be true. While New Year’s resolutions are a great way to make a positive change in your life, whether it’s finally getting organized, losing a few extra pounds before next summer, quitting smoking, or taking the plunge and starting a new business, most reputable statistics show that 92 percent of all resolutions will fail by February. That means only eight percent of us will attain whatever goal it is we set. To make sure your New Year’s Resolutions stick, here are six tips to follow. At the end of the day, your friends here at MMG want to see you make the most out of the rest of this year and beyond.
92 PERCENT OF ALL RESOLUTIONS
WILL FAIL BY FEBRUARY At Least Initially, Don’t Get Too Lofty With Your Goals
You may want a “sky is the limit” mentality in 2019, and we are in no position to tell you differently. But mentally, it’s easier to hit goals and stick with them longer if they are smaller at first. For example, instead of focusing on the big target of losing 100 pounds, start with the first 25-pound mark. As you get closer to hitting that first target, then get more adventurous. Sometimes, this road merely begins by being more active today than you were yesterday. Write Your Goals Down Writing your goals down helps make them real, which leads to accountability. But don’t just write them down and stick them in the bottom of your purse or in a junk drawer – put them on the corner of your desk at work or pin them to the front of your refrigerator door with a magnet. Seeing your goals every day keeps them top of mind and keeps you motivated.
Keep Track of Your Progress Speaking of writing things
down, tracking your progress in a journal or on a calendar
is a great way to stay mindful
of your goals and to see what
type of progress you are making.
Find an Accountability Partner Finding that one person who will hold you
accountable every step of the way, no matter what
your resolution may be, makes keeping
the promises you made to yourself at the beginning of the year so much easier to
achieve. The best accountability partner is someone who is trying to achieve the same goal you are, or has at least been in your shoes before and succeeded.
Create Smart Goals
Remember The reasons Why You Decided to Do This
We mentioned earlier about
If one of your New Year’s
not getting too lofty with
your goal-setting. It’s equally as important to make sure your goals are Specific,
Measurable, Achievable, Results-
Focused, and Time-Bound. New Year’s resolutions have a better chance of
sticking if you are clearly defining what
you are going to do, how you are going to do it, and in how much time.
Resolutions is to quit
smoking, your reasons
for doing so may include being able to have the
energy to play with your kids in the backyard, to keep your house from
smelling bad, and just overall better
health. When you start to lose sight of
your goal, think of the reasons why you got into this to begin with.
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ARE A GREAT WAY TO MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE
Clearly, this is not an exhaustive list of tips to avoid failing at your New Year’s resolutions. What are some of the tips and tricks that have worked for you over the years? Share them with us, and let’s all help each other be a better version of ourselves in 2019.

Tis The F O R F I R E P L A C E S point be a couch, mirror, or television, why not make it your fireplace? You may think the only function of a fireplace is to keep you warm, but it can be an unexpected punch of style, especially in a kitchen, study or master bedroom.
•
I
t may be shocking to hear, but when designing a new house, fireplaces play a big role.
Many designs include multiple fireplaces for personalized indoor and outdoor living, fireplaces with chimneys, those without chimneys, and even custom hearth rooms. Like Scott Calvin proved in “The Santa Clause,” Santa doesn’t have to come down a chimney. Fireplaces are an opportunity to showcase your personality and design tastes, and they can really make a room – especially as the temperatures drop and with the holiday season upon us.
44 | LANTANA LIVING
| DECEMBER 2018
Here are three reasons why a custom fireplace can provide that complete look this holiday season: •
Ambiance – Fireplaces, whether indoor or outdoor, provide endless design possibilities (traditional, modern, contemporary, doublesided or open hearth) and can be customized to suit both your unique lifestyle and a certain mood or design you want to capture in a particular room.
•
It’s the perfect focal point – The focal point is what people are going to see when they first walk into a room. Instead of having that focal
Additional seating – Creating a seating area is a great way to add more functionality to your fireplace, especially if your living room is small and has limited seating options for entertaining guests. Everyone loves to cozy up to a fire; design the home that gives you that opportunity!
At the ML Group, we really get to know our clients, we take the time to listen to their dreams and ideas, and then we bring it to life with cutting-edge design that can’t be beaten. Give us a call today to discuss your ideas for the perfect indoor or outdoor fireplace.

It is estimated that 85 people had been confirmed killed by the fires as well as 14,000 homes destroyed. Though the fire has now been contained, crews are still sifting through the ash of what used to be buildings and homes. First responders for events such as these come in all forms, whether it be brave police officers and firefighters or the countless emergency medical technicians, dispatchers, rescuers, paramedics, military personnel, and even routine volunteers who simply have a calling to help others when they need it most. Ask The Expert: Organizing
Organizing The
P R O C E S S
1. Take the trash out. 2. Put donation boxes in your car. 3. Relocate items to the correct rooms. 4. Make decisions on the revisit items. It’s easy to forget what you own when you can’t see clearly through all the clutter. Once the clutter is gone, you will have a clearer picture. STEP 4 - SORT ALL YOUR “KEEPERS.” At this point, you should only have a keep pile hanging around. Group all like-items together. All pencils together, all t-shirts together, all random cords together, all widgets together, etc. It’s tempting to skip this step, but don’t. Sorting will make step 5 easier.
G
etting organized is a popular New Year’s resolution. This was actually my personal New Year’s
resolution a few years ago. Once I got started, I couldn’t stop! Living decluttered, de-stressed, and simplified is now a way of life for me, and I enjoy teaching others how to do the same. If getting organized is your 2019 resolution, I have an efficient organizing process to share with you. You can use this process with any room in your home. I suggest starting with an area that feels
heavy or stressful to you. You know that
feeling, right? That annoying weight that you can’t exactly pinpoint, but you know it’s there.
STEP 1 - MAKE A MESS.
This sounds counterintuitive, but it’s
necessary to drag everything out and
create one big cluttered pile. It’s easier to deal with the clutter when it’s out in the
open. You may be surprised by the clutter that’s been hiding inside drawers, under beds, and inside boxes.
STEP 2 - SORT YOUR CLUTTER INTO FIVE PILES:
Relocate, revisit, trash, donate,
and keep. The relocate pile consists
of items you want to keep, but don’t
belong in that particular area. The revisit pile should be very small. These are
items you’re having a hard time making
STEP 5 - TIME TO MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL! This is the step we usually see on Pinterest. This is when we get to decide how we are going to display or store everything, but keep in mind that using cute baskets and containers is not going to get you organized. Being organized is about purging and keeping like-items together in smart locations. For instance, it’s smart to store all your spices next to the stove because that is where you use them. Getting organized is about making life more efficient and less stressful. Stay organized all year long by putting everything where it belongs and repeat Steps 1 - 5 at least four times a year. Getting organized is such a great resolution, but staying organized is even better. Overwhelmed? Crystal can guide you through the organizing process and create a personalized organizing plan just for you.

Foodie Friday DFW: Golden Egg Cafe
GOLDEN
EGG CAFE
I
’ll be honest; breakfast is probably my favorite meal of the day. So whenever we get the chance to scope out a breakfast place, I instantly get excited! This week we headed out to Bartonville Town Center to visit Biko and Rocky Bega, brothers and owners of Golden Egg Cafe, which opened in May 2018.
Now almost six months into being open in Bartonville, we were able to witness firsthand the loyal and raving customers Golden Egg Cafe has acquired. There were several large groups there while we were there, and Rocky and Biko informed us that they have several regular customers, some of whom come into the restaurant on a daily basis!
And as you all probably know by now, I’m
And after eating their food, it’s not hard to see why! Everything is made with fresh ingredients and is made in-house as much as possible. They also source many of their products from local markets and farms, to include their eggs and produce.

We had just a small sampling off their Breakfast Menu, but it whet our palette enough that now we can’t wait to head back and try even more! If you’re a fan of the traditional bacon and eggs breakfast, you’ve got to try their Midwest Combo which comes with biscuits and gravy made with their homemade sausage gravy; two eggs; two strips of bacon; and two sausage patties. Pancake-lovers will swoon over their Very Berry Cakes which are their DELICIOUS buttermilk pancakes topped with fresh berries, mascarpone, vanilla and their homemade berry glaze. This almost felt more like dessert than breakfast, but you won’t hear us complain about that! 58 | LANTANA LIVING

a lover of Eggs Benedict. So when Rocky and Biko informed us that one of their
best-sellers is their Avocado Benedict, I
was absolutely game to give it a try! The
eggs were cooked perfectly and the sliced avocado on top was the perfect addition to an already delicious Benedict.
Some of their other breakfast menu items even healthier options like oatmeal, an

But that’s just breakfast! We haven’t even gotten to their lunch menu yet! They
serve an excellent assortment of salads,
sandwiches, burgers and soups that are perfect no matter the time of day!
And if you’re a coffee connoisseur, you’ll
love Golden Egg’s coffee! They are one of just a few local establishments who carry and serve Segafredo Zanetti Espresso
Brand coffee. And they even roast and
grind the beans right there in-house! We’ve heard it’s incredible stuff! Biko and Rocky have done an incredible job making themselves known throughout Bartonville/Argyle and the surrounding areas. They’re residents of Argyle - their children attend Argyle schools, so they’re so happy to be in their community, serving their friends and neighbors.

In the third overtime, Lake Ridge scored on a 15-yard touchdown pass then added a two-point conversion before its defense finally held Guyer out of the end zone to secure the win. “I figured we were good enough to have a chance to sneak into the later rounds this year, but I’ve always known that we’d be set up for an even bigger year in 2019,” said Walsh, who has led Guyer to three state title games, winning two of them. “We have a shot.”
