The LDS church as well as many other conservative churches are pulling their attendance and starting their own organizations as a result. The phrase “separate but equal” kept coming up in conversation. They are going to keep the girls in their own area at camp and in their own troops but come together for certain activities. Unless there are as many girls joining as boys, that really won’t be possible. As a woman, I believe that if a woman does a job on an equal level to a man, she should be compensated for that. On the other hand, I’ve seen the growth that my son has made in scouts and the camaraderie among the boys, and I have a hard time believing that this can be achieved with girls in the mix. When boys reach the ages of 11-14 they become awkward around girls, which would change the dynamic of the troop. The discussion also included whether or not a girl may achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. If girls are allowed to follow the same path, it is inevitable. So the question remains: is it progress to abandon tradition?

Talking with Your Kids ABOUT DIFFICULT TOPICS

ooking for an approach to having tough talks that doesn’t make your stomach knot up? Talking about life’s most important subjects can easily flow from regular conversation. Let’s focus on some basic rules that can help you talk about those tough talks.

4 Steps To Tough Talks Be honest. If something is always true and always has been, treat it like that. Mention it, don’t avoid it, put it in the baby album.

Be curious. Play games at dinner and in the car that

encourage talking. It gets them in the habit of talking out loud about their inner life. With you!

Be clear. Naming a behavior, a body part, a relationship tells your child what is going on. Demonstrating how to talk about a subject by taking a deep breath and teaching how to talk about something uncomfortable sets a precedent for making the topic open for discussion. Be focused. Use everyday opportunities to talk about important topics.

Sitting down to a big ‘talk’ seems like the way to go, but assimilating large amounts of new and emotionally charged information doesn’t come naturally. Talking through life’s core lessons a little bit at a time allows you and your loved ones to explore the issues in deeper ways over time and with less risk for misunderstanding. So the next time your child asks what this is called or describes a bully or asks where babies come from, take a deep breath and Be honest, Be clear, Be curious, and Be focused.

Cinnamon Creek Ranch

Just Got

BIGGER by Susan Neuhalfen

C

innamon Creek Ranch has always been a well-kept secret in North Texas, but following their recent

expansions and improvements to the

property, you won’t believe what they’ve done now.

What started as a family-owned and operated wild game business has

not only become one of the premier archery facilities in the country, it’s

grown into a first-rate destination for any event imaginable.

“We’ve hosted corporate team building, scout banquets, school banquets,

reunions, team parties, political dinners

and fundraisers,” said Nola Musacchio, co-

owner of Cinnamon Creek Ranch. “We can accommodate just about any occasion,

indoors or out, casual or elegant, under the stars or under the roof.”

Cinnamon Creek Ranch redefined archery, designing outdoor shooting areas like

a golf course with 3D targets that even

include a tree hunting course with stands and all. Once players finish one course, they move to the next, keeping score much like golf.

They built two indoor archery rooms

downstairs and one entire room upstairs

to host tournaments, complete with bleachers.

They opened one of the largest archery shops in the country, selling bows from

fourteen different manufacturers as well as everything under the sun an archer would ever need.

Joe and Nola Musacchio have now

expanded again and have made it the perfect venue for any event.

The new outdoor covered pavilion seats over 140 people, with elegant lights

strung across the room, a stage for bands or presentations and rows of huge picnic tables, all overlooking the countryside

and Henrietta Creek. Soon the outdoor patio will stretch to the creek, have

cornhole, big Jenga, beer pong and

horseshoes. Additionally, the outdoor

bar will seat large groups enjoying the

need energy!!! Summer is ending and that means fall schedules and holidays around the corner. I just drag my feet some days, please help!

Dear Reader: Today’s schedules are demanding. Energy is a something we all need more of. Many people tell me how tired and run down they feel at times. It seems we have run out of energy. What creates energy for us? We create energy through the mitochondria. How many remember the Krebs cycle from biology? We need healthy mitochondria for optimal energy. It is also extremely important for cell regeneration to prevent aging and imperative for healthy cognition, for fighting inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the body. We need BDNF Brain- derived neutrophic factor to create new and healthy brains cells. If the brain is sluggish, so is every other system in the body. Certain foods lend themselves more to creating strong mitochondria and turn on the gene to create BDNF. The top 12 food choices for healthy mitochondria based on the Functional Medicine Institute are:

It took one year, four separate hours long trips to the cemetery and many more hours spent at the computer to compile the list. They took pictures of every veteran’s headstone and documented the location by quadrant, latitude and longitude. He created a book with all of the information and presented one copy to the beneficiaries, one to the Boy Scouts and one to the Flower Mound Public Library.

“The librarian congratulated him on being an author,” laughed his father, Michael Wells, who is also a veteran. “They immediately put it in the reference section.” When asked his favorite part of the project, Chris said it was a funny story. “I was using an example of two people having the same name, having served in two different wars but they had to be catalogued under the same name so I didn’t want it to seem confusing,” he remembered. “Mrs. Calvert smiled and said that I had found the graves of her father and grandfather and that she was very grateful. Seeing how happy she was reminded me of why I did this project.” “It has been a pleasure to provide the beneficiaries of Chinn Chapel Cemetery with the opportunity to have our scouts, and particularly Chris Wells, provide them with an accurate catalogue of the deceased veterans laid to rest there,” said Nick DiSibio, Scoutmaster of Troop 99. “It was a great project and as both the Scoutmaster and a veteran myself, it makes me proud.” AUGUST 2017 | LANTANA LIVING | 49

pre-teens is considering Invisalign for orthodontic treatment.

Though Invisalign® is an orthodontic

treatment typically used by adults, teens and pre-teens can greatly benefit from

the treatment when indicated. Invisalign® is a series of trays worn throughout the day that orthodontically move teeth as

they are changed out usually on a weekly basis. The process typically begins with

is the right treatment. Following a series of x-rays, impressions are taken. In our

office, we prefer to use digital impressions for comfort and accuracy. The case is

students? First, the trays can be removed. This is helpful if your child plays a wind

braces from hindering performance. Band or orchestra students can even take them out during play. Second, for athletes, Invisalign® helps avoid oral trauma

usually faster than traditional orthodontics, in addition to not having to worry about brackets popping off. This will help limit the amount of time your child misses school or school functions. Compliance is very important when considering Invisalign®. Though it is easier for them to clean their teeth compared to conventional braces, if they do not wear the trays as instructed, then the treatment will not work. I have seen many great results with Invisalign for teens and pre-teens. Ask your dentist if your child is a candidate. Enjoy the school year, and happy smiling!

“I want to say 2011,” Van Noy said. “I’m pretty sure that’s right.” Clearly it had been a while, which is why last season was so tough on the Lady Wildcats. Making the playoffs has become the standard at Guyer in recent years, which is why Van Noy insists she will right the ship sooner rather than later. And luckily, she believes she has the right players to make it happen. “These girls never stop playing. I’m constantly opening up our gym just so they can play for an hour,” Van Noy said. “We missed the playoffs last year, but these kids want to win so bad and we’ve got missing pieces that have been filled.” Van Noy has a solid core of returning players back for her first year at the helm, including setter Miles Baker, libero Kate Cowan, Mallory Pittman, Caroline Orozco, Hope Kennedy, and Shea Slusser. Cowan rolled up 690 digs and 15 aces last year to earn libero of the year honors in District 6-6A. It also helps to have a coach like Van Noy pacing the sideline, and anyone who 58 | LANTANA LIVING
