Following Through On RESOLUTIONS

T

he holiday season is long gone, and hopefully, that means no more cake, candy, and tables loaded with food we shouldn’t be eating. I mean, don’t get me wrong, just the sound of all that is making me hungry. But now is the time to start thinking about what we can do to better ourselves — and start anew. Naturally, a great place to start is by recapturing your fitness goals and being healthy. But it also goes beyond that. Typical resolutions that we should all follow through with this time of year include spending less time on work and more with family and friends, living life to the fullest, getting organized, and learning a new skill or hobby. Many people use the flip to the new year as a chance to clean the slate financially — get out of debt, save money, etc. These are all great ideas, and it can be easy for many of us to simply say, “Yeah, I’m going to focus on all of that.” My answer is that instead of biting off more than you can chew, pick one — maybe two — New Year’s resolutions and put all of your time and energy into meeting those goals. You’ll be a lot better off and more likely to follow through. Our family here at Murray Media Group only wants the best for you, your family, and your friends. We are coming off the worst year of our lifetime, and it’s easy to carry all of that yuck into the next year. But don’t! This is our opportunity to start anew — to create the best year yet! I believe we will.

LAS AGNAING T H Y N E I G H B O R L

asagna Love is a grass roots movement that started at the beginning of the pandemic by Rhiannon Menn, who had the simple mission of feeding families, spreading kindness, and strengthening communities. Menn saw a need with the rise of food insecurities and began preparing lasagna for families in her neighborhood who were struggling financially, emotionally, or simply feeling overwhelmed. Since then, the humble act has rippled

across the nation. Thousands of people are cooking and delivering meals to

families within their own communities.

One of those lasagna makers is Flower Mound resident, Laurie Appelbaum.

After seeing a segment on the Today Show about Lasagna Love, Laurie jumped at the opportunity to turn her own grief brought on by the pandemic into something meaningful. “Back in July, my father contracted COVID-19 and passed away. I was angry but wanted to work it out in a

positive way,” Laurie said. “Instead of alienating myself, I tried to focus on what good could come from this. Yes, I am very sad, but I wanted to do something that could maybe make it easier on someone else.” Signing up on the website to deliver

lasagnas in the area suddenly turned into Laurie becoming a regional leader for

many lasagnas to make and who will be the recipients.” According to Laurie, the organization is incredibly organized. They have computer software with an algorithm that automatically matches mamas and papas to their recipients, removing the office work so volunteers can solely focus on spreading love. “I am very happy and impressed to be involved with an organization that is doing such a great job at getting people something so simple, but it’s something they are truly grateful to have,” Laurie said. “We are delivering comfort food — comfort that is experienced around a dining room table. And to show these little displays of kindness can have a profound and lasting impact on people.” Laurie said Lasagna Love’s current need is recipient families. She believes that many people do not know how to ask for help or even feel ashamed to ask, but sometimes, we all need a little pick me up.

“That’s what we are all here for, to provide a really simple act of love and kindness during these uncertain times, Laurie said.”

“Once a week, we go out and get a list of what we call our Lasagna Mamas/Papasmamas and papas who cook the lasagnas to deliver to certain people who need the lasagnas,” Laurie said. “They know how

t only 9-years-old, her resume is one to be envied. She has written seven books, but until now, none where published. That changed this past fall when Ricki became the youngest author in her publishing company, Balboa. Ricki and her family felt her stories should be available for all, to help teach and inspire.

Fly High Butterfly is a story of faith, hope, and friendship. Rose, a young butterfly, is separated from her mother and befriends a young girl named Ricki. The two set off

on a hopeful adventure that leads to Rose reuniting with her mother. “When I write books, I want to connect with people,” Ricki said. “I want it to inspire them.”

With an African American and Panamanian background, Ricki had a desire to turn Fly High Butterfly into a duallanguage book, being printed in both

18 | LANTANA LIVING | JANUARY 2021

“The goal is for her to start doing these videos of her reading her own books and other books that she admires. We want kids to actually join in and enjoy learning how to read,” LoWana said. “It’s not all about bragging rights. It is about helping. If God blesses you with a gift, you have to give your gift to others.” Fly High Butterfly was created as a way for Ricki to give part of her passion to friends, to connect with them, and to touch lives. She hopes her books inspire others to create and use their gifts, as well.

That is exactly what she is doing. When Ricki and her mother, LoWana Hardy, decided to take her stories to the next level, their main goal was to make sure these books helped in giving back to the community. “Our goal is to donate to underprivileged kids,” LoWana said. “We are teaming up with Half Priced Books for their donation drive. Ricki will be able to give out free books to children who may not be able to afford them.”

English and Spanish. Her hope is to team up with surrounding school districts and have her book be a tool for dual-language programs. Encouragement from family and her teachers at school has given Ricki the confidence to expand her brand. Not only does she have more books in the pipeline, she has created Ricki Reads-- a website where cartoon-Ricki reads to and interacts

“When I grow up, I want to be a writer, and if I can, be a part-time singer,” Ricki said. “I want others to know they should let their imaginations go wild, have fun, but don’t forget to do the work.” Keep an eye out for Ricki’s soon-to-bereleased titles including, Where’s My Crown, Not Always a Royal, and her trilogy, Summer School Nightmare. alentine’s Day is in around the corner. What do you give to the one you love? A box of candy? A beautiful floral arrangement? We have a suggestion for something else to consider — working out together. Time after time, studies have shown that working out and getting fit together is good for your relationship. At Jesse James Fit & Outlaw FitCamp, we’ve seen and experienced the concrete benefits of getting fit with a loved one. And because we are committed to making lasting improvements in the lives of our clients, we put our money where our mouth is. JUST A FEW OF THE BENEFITS OF WORKING OUT TOGETHER INCLUDE: Sharing a Goal Brings You Closer When you work out as a couple, you’re getting healthy and prioritizing fitness together. The experience of working together toward this goal brings you closer. A Partner Holds You Accountable People who are held accountable for their workout routine are more likely to be successful. On the other hand, when you’re on your own, you’re much more likely

to skip workouts. A partner joining you on workouts increases your chances of sticking to your plan on those days. Trying Something New Strengthens Your Relationship Trying something new together brings closeness to a relationship. Using a personal trainer and learning new workouts together will help a couple feel more connected. Workout Sessions Give You Guaranteed Quality Time Life, jobs, and kids get in the way of even the most determined couple. But if you make time in your day to exercise and start doing it together, it gives you some built-in quality time during the day. Workouts Give You Both a Place to Blow Off Steam Having a “gym date” where you can blow off steam during a workout will not only help control your stress level, but will keep your partner from being the target of a bad day. Work Out Together at Jesse James Fit or Outlaw FitCamp at No Additional Cost! At Jesse James Fit & Outlaw FitCamp, we’ve seen the long-term benefits to our clients when spouses get fit together, and that’s why we want to make it as easy as possible to do this. ow many times have you been stuck on hold with your business phone service provider for an hour or even two? That scenario sounds crazy, but it happens all the time. All you want is for your phones to work — no more dropped calls, poor voice quality, and limited functionality — but you’re spending more time on hold than getting the problem fixed. Thankfully, there is a business that Denton County residents can call right now to avoid the typical run-around and, more importantly, ensure they never have to deal with disruptions in communication ever again.

that. Need a free phone or an expert for voice and data cabling, network security closets, or security camera installations? Vested Networks has you covered. Need a partner for your IT department or internet provider? They do that, too.

Meet Vested Networks in Lewisville. Owners Evan and Courtney Huff say they install and maintain professional VoIP business phone systems, but it’s so much more than

Evan started in the business 10 years ago working with larger VoIP providers and learned quickly that there was a better way of servicing customers. So he went out on his own.

He and Courtney haven’t looked back since, and with a growing team of associates ready to serve, you can’t go wrong partnering with them. “For us, it wasn’t rocket science: just treat people the way we would want to be treated,” Courtney said. “Whenever you call any provider, you can be stuck on hold for hours. I don’t want to be on the phone for hours, and neither do customers. They need that time to run their business, there’s no time to worry if the phone on their desk will work how it should.” The world of VoIP telecommunications systems is perfect for sole proprietors and small businesses with an in-house staff or remote workers. But the last thing you expect are dropped calls, frequent static, or voices cutting in and out. At the end of the day, these are your business lines that you conduct business through every day. You deserve extreme reliability and to have someone in your corner making sure things are working properly and be ultra quick should anything need changed. If that’s not what you’re currently receiving from your provider, that’s a disservice to you and your customers, and you’re losing money!

WELLNESS 2021

TRENDS To Find Your Bliss by Kelly Murray

M

any popular fitness and health trends came to light over the past year, from tele-health to wellness coaching and better health monitoring. Now that 2021 is here, we have even more wellness trends to consider. Here are just a few that will define 2021.

Wellness Ecosystems With more people staying home, this year will be filled with all types of home-based wellness trends. One that’s becoming very popular is the planning and creation of wellness ecosystems within homes. Implementing this concept in your household means that you can improve any indoor influences on your health, whether it’s the technology you regularly use or the architecture within rooms. For example, Circadian lighting is indoor lighting that can help improve your sleep by mimicking the natural patterns of sunlight. Air purifiers are becoming common in many households as people have become more aware of poor air quality outside their homes. The colors, designs, and other elements of your home’s architecture can affect stress and overall comfort levels. You can bet more people will make these subtle changes in the months to come. 24 | LANTANA LIVING | JANUARY 2021

www.LantanaLiving.com

Immunity Hacks Immunity and improving it is likely to be a hot trend over the next few years for two reasons. First, genetic testing to identify weaknesses in the immune system has become much more common over the past few years. It’s more affordable and reliable than ever before, so many people are becoming interested in having their DNA tested. Also, the COVID-19 pandemic reminded many people of their own mortality, and many have begun to question their immune strength. Without immunity, you can’t possibly find bliss when illnesses or disorders can occur out of nowhere at any time. That’s why immunity hacks are predicted to be a major theme in 2021. By improving your diet, utilizing new health technologies, and being more mindful of your sleep and physical activity, a strengthened immune system can ensure that your 2021 is a healthy and blissful one. Focus on Mental Health Society as a whole has made major strides in recognizing and treating mental health. All indicators point toward 2021 as the year where mental health will be brought to the forefront and prioritized. A major catalyst for this was the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress, depression, and anxiety all took center stage, with many people becoming worried about the future while being isolated during home lockdowns. Tele-health became crucial for healthcare providers who needed to treat mental disorders from a safe distance. While general wellness and health can contribute to your happiness, true bliss can’t be achieved without mental stability. In Denton County, there’s currently one mental health care provider for every 1,257 residents. While this isn’t too out of the ordinary compared to other Texas counties, it means that taking preventative measures is important for everyone. Mental health trends predicted for 2021 should be embraced and integrated into your everyday routine. This includes taking care of yourself by ensuring that you’re remaining socially active, opening up to others about your feelings, and taking up hobbies that enrich your quality of life. www.LantanaLiving.com

SKY

Pie

BUTTERMILK SHOP by Caylie Howard | photos courtesy of Caylie Howard

A

my Doyle, owner of Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, opened her business after a two year process in October of this year. Amy fell in love with Buttermilk Sky Pie at a baby shower after trying their famous key lime pie. After meeting the franchise owners and getting a sense of the family feel of the company, Amy knew that this was something that she wanted to be a part of.

All of the pies are family recipes from the franchise owners that were passed down from generations. All of the pies are made from scratch with fresh ingredients and no preservatives. Because of this, there are some pies that are only seasonal due to the ingredients of the pie not being in season, such as their cherry pie. Their two top best-selling pies are the I40 and Key Lime Pies. The I40 is the franchise best seller while the Key Lime is Amy’s best seller. “I40 is my husband’s favorite and the Key Lime is mine and my kids favorite. We’re a house divided.” Amy says.

The I40 is named after the interstate in Tennessee, which is where the company originates from. It is a pecan pie with chocolate chips and coconut. It is absolutely delicious. The flavors don’t overpower each other and it’s the perfect amount of sweetness. The Chewy Chocolate Chip pie is a deep dish chocolate chip cookie with a shortbread crust. This isn’t your traditional pie but it definitely sets the bar high for any cookie you will ever have.

The Key Lime Pie was out of this world. It’s easy to see why it’s a top seller. It’s not too overpowering or tart. It has just the right amount of lime. The key is that they use fresh lime juice. “If you see a key lime pie that is bright green, they’ve used food coloring.” Amy says. Using fresh ingredients really separates this pie from the rest of the pack. Amy always suggests to those that aren’t a fan of key lime, to try their version. These pies are perfect for any holiday, party, or gathering and are sure to impress anyone who tries them. Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is raising the bar for desserts in Denton County.

I was told by Amy that the there was just

something about the Pecan Pie that made it different from all of the rest. After one bite, I couldn’t agree more. It was smooth and soft. I feel that a lot of times, pecan pies can come out too sweet. But this pie was just the right amount of sweetness. And the pecan to pie ratio was perfection. The Pumpkin Pie was phenomenal. The crust was almost like a dough. I felt like it melted in my mouth. I was blown away by the presentation of the pies. Each pie was decorated with a crust in the shape of a pumpkin in the very center. This pie is seasonal only around the Thanksgiving holidays, much to many customers’ dismay.

Aerial yoga, also referred to as anti-gravity yoga, originated in New York and moves yoga from the ground to the air. Aerial yoga may at first have seemed like a fad, but the concept has caught on and is practiced in several countries. Hailed for its many benefits, aerial yoga frees your body from the restraint of the flat, hard floor allowing for more fluid movements. It combines anti-gravity asana (yoga poses), acrobatics, Pilates, and dance, and is favored for safe alignment, because it provides more length in your spine. photo courtesy of Urban Vybe Social Media Page

Ask The Expert: Home Decorating

• RHYTHM, REPETITION, STYLE & LINES: Where should we put the smaller pieces in the room to create rhythm, repetition, style and good lines? Repetition and rhythm can be created using pairs of objects, colors, shapes, style and textures.

CREATING A

HEALTHY SANCTUARY by Allison Fifer, POSH Home Staging & Redesign

A

hhh, the sanctuary bedroom. The ultimate source for a homeowner’s rest, relaxation and restoration. It is a space that affords you freedom to curl up with a good book, talk privately on the phone, re-energize, speak intimately or enjoy special time with a loved one. Despite these activities, this bedroom is often left undecorated, overlooked, overpopulated and cluttered…thus, distracting from healthy living. Relaxing colors, plush linens and fluffy pillows all contribute subtly to create an atmosphere of welcoming retreat. Color is central to our emotions we feel when entering a room. When combined with the overall effect of a room, color can have a magnificent or devastating effect. It can affect a person’s emotions, energy level and sense of order (or disorder). Color also sets a tone in a home; for example, formal vs informal; masculine vs feminine; cold and stuffy vs warm and welcoming. When assessing your sanctuary, keep the following five steps in mind:

• PURPOSE: What is the purpose of your space? Form follows function, so this room needs to work within the constraints of your needs and preferences. Obviously, the master bedroom’s primary purpose is for sleeping, but you may be surprised at all the elements that need for that purpose. • SPACE & EMPHASIS: How is the space

shaped and what should the focal point be? The elements of the space must be in harmony with the architectural style of the room. There is a focal point for each room of a home. In one’s bedroom it is usually the bed.

• BALANCE, FLOW, PROPORTION & SCALE: Where should we put the large pieces in the room to create balance, flow, proportion and scale? The room should be balanced from every angle and visual weight taken into consideration. It should have managed and functional traffic flow, uninterrupted from the entry to the adjoining bathroom. Furnishing choices are to be in proportion to the room and to scale with one another.

• OBLIGATIONS: Most rooms need plenty of lighting. In the master bedroom, provide practical bedside lighting. Also ask yourself: is the room organized, clean, and well repaired? Does it have good air circulation? Baths should be sparkling clean and in good order, as well. For home owners, this is an obligation we owe to ourselves in order to relieve the stress, chaos, stuffiness and nagging mental “to do” list in our bedroom. Setting boundaries and teaching children to respect your relationship are good examples for everyone in the family. Remove toys, kids’ photos, desks, work resources, animal beds, etc. from the master bedroom. Why no kid photos? Photos of our children do not help to promote intimacy and romance in the bedroom. This is not to say that children are not allowed in your private sanctuary! Some of our family’s favorite moments are snuggling together in bed discussing what we want to do that day! Share your sanctuary with your children on your terms, while teaching them to respect your relationship and space. And, set goals to declutter and organize your bedroom to create the sanctuary you deserve. It is important to get rid of items you dislike, no longer use, are worn out or outdated. Ask yourself three qualifying questions: Do you love it? Does it fit your lifestyle? Have you used it within the last year? Creating a sanctuary that is healthy is not easy, but is so rewarding in many ways. It is a gift!

Hollywood’s

ANTI-AGING SECRETS

Are Right Here In Flower Mound

by Steve Gamel | photography of Miranda Longoria Photography

ight years ago, Heather Tindell was sitting in the lap of luxury as the head of the medical spa division at Beverly Hills Rejuvenation’s flagship location in Los Angeles. Actors, celebrities, and the wealthy routinely lined up at her door hoping to defy their age, look younger, and feel healthier, and plenty more clients were flying in from all over the country. Interestingly enough, many of those clients were from Dallas, including one gentleman who suggested that she expand her wildly popular business into Texas. To say Tindell loved the idea would be an understatement. Shortly after opening her first location

HEATHER TINDELL, Founder/Spa Director For Heather Tindell, looking great and feeling great go hand-inhand. After more than a decade in film, television, modeling and sports broadcasting, as well as first class training in the medical field, she now combines her passions for wellness and the secrets she learned working with Hollywood elite to bring North Texas a spa like no other in the area. “My goal is that clients experience the same level of care and treatments that actors, celebrities and the wealthy choose at an affordable price right here in North Texas.” By transplanting the knowledge and expertise of the famous Beverly Hills-based location to her six DFW area locations, North Texans can now share in the same secrets that keep the rich and famous looking fabulous.

DR. JAMES KADI, Medical Director As the medical director, Dr. James Kadi oversees services provided by BHRC. He’s certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. As one of Dallas/Ft. Worth’s leading plastic surgeons, Dr. Kadi supervises this skilled medical spa & hormone clinic team. He’s been practicing for 15 y ears in North Texas. In addition to being an MD, he also has a DDS degree and a Masters. He applies his vast medical knowledge into his every day practice. He recognizes the uniqueness of each patient which allows him to give the special attention they deserve. “It’s gratifying to help people to feel as good as they look.”

in Flower Mound in 2013 with her new partner, Tindell added six more. Her promise? Bring the secrets that keep the rich and famous looking fabulous closer to home for North Texans. “People would really go all that way for the allure of LA,” Tindell said. “The best of the best are in LA. It’s very competitive, and you have to be results-driven and really know what you are doing. Bringing that flair and skill to DFW has been great. We started with the first location in Flower Mound, and we did very well, very quickly. It just took off from there.” Because Tindell licensed the BHRC name when she moved to Texas, her six locations in Flower Mound, Southlake, Highland Park, Frisco, Fort Worth, and Alliance are 100% independent and not affiliated with any other BHRC franchise outside of Texas. And for her team’s loyal clients right here in Denton County, that makes all the difference in the world. The goal, of course, is to help people look and feel great. Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center in Flower Mound is the leading hormone replacement therapy and medical spa in the state, offering a comprehensive list of services that include everything from injectables and laser treatments to medical-grade peels, IV therapy, hair restoration, and Coolsculpting. They recently introduced www.LantanaLiving.com

peptide therapy and stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine and EXCEL02 fractional laser treatments, which are exclusive to BHRC Dallas locations. The laser treatments alone can take up to 10 years off your skin’s appearance and are administered by the most highly-skilled, educated, and trained staff in the nation. “Coming from LA, you have to bring that A-game every day,” Tindell said. “We are sticklers for customer service and patient safety because, at the end of the day, we know that we are nothing without our clients. I don’t take that for granted, and my team is a reflection of that. We think outside the box to give people the results they want.” No matter the reason why you are visiting Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center in Flower Mound, you can rest easy that you will experience superior results. After all, a true professional is leading the charge. After more than a decade in film, television, modeling, and sports www.LantanaLiving.com

broadcasting, as well as training in the medical field, Tindell joined the original Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center and turned it into Southern California’s top aesthetic clinic within a year. During that time, she learned breakthrough approaches to both surgical and nonsurgical procedures, receiving certifications in Ultherapy nonsurgical facelift, InMode Ultimate Body and Facial Contouring, Advance Injectables, and Practice Management for Anti-Aging and Wellness. Together with Dr. James Kadi, a boardcertified plastic surgeon who oversees their many services as the medical director, they rely on techniques, protocols, and treatments developed by industry leaders and set by worldrenowned physicians. And then there are the accolades. According to its website, BHRC Dallas has been voted best bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, receiving a 2018 Living Magazine Best Of Readers’ Choice

“WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON HAVING A FLAWLESS TRACK RECORD.” award. BHRC was a multiple Aesthetic Everything Crystal Diamond Award winner in 2017 while also be awarded No. 1 Medical Spa West, No. 1 Medical Spa Middle America, and No. 1 Hormone Therapy Center in America. Bottom line, there’s only one place to go if you want to feel completely rejuvenated — Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Dallas. “We are pretty proud of that because there are other organizations that have been here for a lot longer,” Tindell said. “We pride ourselves on having a flawless track record. This is an area where we are dealing with people’s lives, in some cases. We’ve been reviewed by the Texas medical board and have been given quality reviews on safety and protocols. There’s an edge to what we do, and it leads to ridiculous results.” JANUARY 2021 | LANTANA LIVING | 33

SHERIFF’S W I T H

S H E R I F F

K

-9 Nilo was born on December 15, 2011, in the Netherlands and was named “Daffe.” He was purchased and imported to the United States in August of 2013. In the fall of 2013, the Denton County Sheriff’s Office committed to building a K-9 program to help serve Denton County citizens. K-9 Nilo was the first K-9 selected to join our agency, and he and his handler began training in Louisiana. After Nilo and his handler completed training in March of 2014, he hit the streets working. Nilo continued to work with his original handler until the fall of 2017 when he was assigned a new handler. Nilo’s new handler, Deputy Corey Halfmann, was his partner until his end of watch on December 14, 2020, due to a terminal illness. K-9 Nilo’s end of watch was just one day shy of his birthday. Nilo’s spent his entire career working Criminal Interdiction. Hunting illegal contraband smugglers was his passion. In doing so, Nilo assisted in the seizure of thousands of pounds of narcotics and millions in assets seized from narcotics smugglers, drug dealers, and other criminals. His largest single narcotics seizure was 445 pounds on a traffic stop. K-9 Nilo was known throughout the North Texas K-9 World as one of the best narcotic sniffing K-9s around. His reputation in the criminal interdiction world was so good that state and federal agencies across North Texas called for his

T R A C Y

assistance numerous times. Officers from other agencies respected Nilo and were always happy to have him assist. Nilo’s handler, Deputy Corey Halfmann, shares these sentiments: “On every traffic stop I would make, K-9 Nilo would become fully alert and would always stand up and watch every move I made from the vehicle through the front kennel door. On one traffic stop, he was able to get through his kennel door and was in my front seat. What was great was that he had his paw on the light bar and siren buttons and was hitting them. So there I was, trying to get through this stop, and my sirens and lights are on and off and changing constantly because Nilo keeps hitting the buttons with his paws. I can say with certainty that on numerous occasions when dealing with violent criminals, the sound of Nilo’s bark always deterred the aggressive behavior of the person I was dealing with. There is no telling how many times his bark saved my life. I have never had a criminal attempt to violently confront me once they heard Nilo barking. Nilo was one of the most kind and gentle K-9s around. He was very sociable and loved kids. Sometimes, I think he loved them more than me. He loved going up to kids and pushing all his weight on them so they would have to wrap their arms around him to stay balanced.

All the way up until the end, K-9 Nilo loved to work. I would go outside in the morning and start my unit only to hear K-9 Nilo start his excited yelping because he knew it was time to go to work. That boy would race out of the house and sit at the door of my unit, waiting for me to open it. There was nothing he loved more than going to work. Most people have no idea the bond a handler has with his K-9 partner. I did not really even know how tight our bond was until the loss of him. It one of the hardest things I have ever had to deal with.” K-9 Nilo spent his last days with his handler and family at home, celebrating his birthday with cake and treats. DCSO was honored by Nilo’s service, and he will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, K-9 Nilo!

Dentistry: Ask The Expert

NEW SMILES For A New Year by Dr. Matt Artho, Owner of Country Lakes Family Dental

I

t’s a new year, and as I reflect on the intimate time spent over the holidays with family and friends, celebrating the season and appreciating those cherished moments of joy and giving, I can only sum it all up in four simple words: I ate too much. Yes, once again, we start the new year off with resolutions to shake off those habits so easily picked up during the time of merriness and cheer. Now, with the holidays behind us, we can focus on some new ways to improve ourselves, even our oral health. Here are some dental ideas for how you can start the year with a great smile.

Every good resolution starts with a solid foundation. With your oral health, it’s back to the basics of brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits. Brushing after meals, or at least twice a day is a common understanding, but flossing can be a tricky habit to start. Some tips for flossing can include setting up a reminder in your phone or creating a progress chart. It may even be helpful to place floss next to your sink as a daily reminder to floss.

As you start off 2020 with new resolutions for a healthy, happier you, make sure to keep your oral health as a part of that package. Happy New Year and Happy Smiling!

When it comes to improving the aesthetics of your smile, there is a wide spectrum of dental treatment that is available. If you have never tried whitening, this is a simple and easy way to enhance the look of your teeth. If you have ever considered straightening your teeth, this may be the year to consider orthodontic or Invisalign treatment.

BOB’S HOUSE OF

Igniting Ho

FOR HEAL by Jean Eisenmann | photo courtesy of Helen’s Photography

B

y Presidential Proclamation, January is known as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The goal is to raise awareness of heinous crimes against humanity, including children. Human traffickers generate billions of dollars by enslaving individuals through coercion, violence, blackmail, and other manipulative tactics, forcing victims to provide labor or services against their will, including commercial sex. This degradation of human dignity is prevalent throughout the world, including communities across America. And Texas is no exception. According to the U.S. Department of State, there are 300,000 children lured into the commercial sex trade each year in the United States. Surprisingly, roughly 150,000 of them are boys.

Enter Bob Williams, founder and CEO of Ranch Hands Rescue Counseling Center and Animal Sanctuary in Argyle. Bob initiated the nonprofit more than a decade ago to pair abused and neglected animals (the worst-ofthe-worst) with individuals suffering from complex trauma, resulting in unconventional and hugely successful therapy for both man and beast. Bob had always planned to add a safe house to the center as a separate facility, possibly for treating veterans. But after learning of the alarming lack of support and aid for male sex trafficking victims, he had to get involved. “I refer to these boys as the unseen survivors, because of the stigma associated with sex trafficking,” Bob said.

HOPE

ope

LING Bob’s House of Hope will be the country’s first nonprofit long-term safe house exclusively for male survivors of commercial sexual exploitation between the ages of 18-24. Why that age range?

“We believe younger victims are better off in a secure foster home rather than an institutional home, where they might still receive love in a family environment toward their recovery,” Bob explained. “Older victims, those 18 and into their 20s, are considered adults. But after multiple years of being victimized by abuse, emotionally they’re maybe 14 or 15 and need help and love, too, but in a more structured treatment environment.” The house is being converted from what used to be Ranch Hands Rescue’s headquarters (on Hwy 77 between Denton and Argyle) into Bob’s House of Hope. Residents will be part of a twoyear, long-term trauma care program, providing six young men with 24-hour care seven days a week in a safe environment.

www.LantanaLiving.com

BOB’S HOUSE OF HOPE IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN MID-FEBRUARY

“These kids have been through intense trauma,” Bob said. “We’re trying to take what might require years of therapy and compress it into two.”

In addition, residents will be offered a mentoring program led by male and female veterans, vocational training such as woodworking, and furthering their education. By employing the same animal-assisted therapy as the counselors at Ranch Hands Rescue, working with the animals will be an integral part of therapy and recovery for these young men.

Law officers and government agencies phone Bob weekly with requests to take in young sexual exploitation survivors. The majority of residents selected for the safe house will be referred by law enforcement.

Bob’s House of Hope is scheduled to open in mid-February. Hopefully, it

will serve as a model for other cities so that young victims everywhere

might have a place of healing they can turn to.

“We need people to get involved

and join our fight,” Bob implored.

“If we build it, I just know people will support it.”

Please, for the love of Pete, do not write “New Years.” Why is it New Year’s? Using an apostrophe shows possession, which is important when you’re talking about New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, a New Year’s resolution, a New Year’s greeting, etc. In all instances, you’re referring to something that belongs to the holiday. Here are a few examples: •

This New Year’s Eve party rocks!

What is your New Year’s resolution?

New Year’s Day is my favorite day of the year.

It’s a New Year’s celebration!!

Another Noteworthy Rule For 2021 And Beyond Capitalize “New Year” in a sentence when referring to the holiday, which is a proper noun. If you’re writing about a general timeframe, lowercase new year. Here are a few examples: •

Let’s meet for lunch in the new year.

Happy New Year, everyone!

VACCINES ARE HERE IN

DENTON COUNTY by Precinct 4 Commissioner Dianne Edmondson photo courtesy by Commissioner Dianne Edmondson

D

ecember 16 was a historic day in Denton County. Both Texas Health Presbyterian Flower Mound and Texas Health Denton administered the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to health care workers in Denton County. A day later, Medical City Denton began administering vaccines with Medical City Lewisville following shortly afterward. An additional 2,600 doses were expected the following week.

In a news conference on Dec. 17, Gov. Greg Abbott said the state would have an estimated 1 million individuals vaccinated by Christmas. In January, freestanding medical centers, pharmacies, long-term care centers, and local health departments are expected to have vaccines. We currently have 140 healthcare providers signed up to distribute the vaccine in Denton County and will work with them to ensure we cover the county population.

IN SUMMARY, HELP IS ON THE WAY. ALL OF US WHO WANT A VACCINATION SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET ONE WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.

In addition, antibody therapeutic drugs are available in Texas for those with COVID-19 to help them recover and keep them out of hospitals. After nine months of a pandemic and with the significant increase in cases in November and December, this was great news with which to end the year. Now, as we start a new year, we see light at the end of the tunnel with both Moderna and Pfizer mRNA (messenger RNA) vaccines available across the U.S. We also have exciting news to share locally about a Little Elm company, Retractable Technologies Inc., which is a pioneer in providing effective safety syringes with automated retraction syringes and needles. The Denton County company will increase its manufacturing

capabilities as part of Operation Warp Speed and the upcoming vaccination campaign across the country. The U.S. Department of Defense, through a Technology Investment Agreement, has agreed to fund $53.6 million to increase RTI’s manufacturing capacity for the product of safety needles for current and future pandemic response. In summary, help is on the way. All of us who want a vaccination should be able to get one within the next few months. In the meantime, we must not let our guard down against this vicious virus. Following the Thanksgiving Holiday, a surge in positive cases resulted here in Denton County with COVID patients now occupying more than half of the ICU beds. Therefore, we must continue to be vigilant and practice the CDC guidelines to keep ourselves and others protected as the holiday season continues. But indeed, let us also be joyful as we see great progress in the fight to defeat COVID-19.

...THEY WERE NOT ONLY ABLE TO CREATE A FOOTBALL TEAM, BUT...WIN THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN NOVEMBER. 48 | LANTANA LIVING | JANUARY 2021

W

inning a high school football state championship is not an easy feat. Doing so when it is the school’s first year is even more difficult. But Harvest Christian Academy Lantana accomplished precisely that by beating Azle Christian 58-44 to win the 2020 Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship (TCAF) Division II Six-Man Football Championship.

Harvest Christian Academy (HCA) opened up their satellite campus in Lantana for the first time this fall. As a brand-new school, they were not only able to create a football team, but that football team was also able to pull together and win the state championship in November.

There are numerous challenges and obstacles for any new team, but offensive coordinator Jesse Erhart had a lot to say about the team’s hard work this season. He had been coaching football since 2003 at several private schools and brought a lot of experience to the team. www.LantanaLiving.com

“WE STARTED WITH A PRETTY LOW NUMBER, BUT GOD KEPT BRINGING MORE PLAYERS.” “The biggest challenge this year was providing a quality program with the limited resources of a first school, but God is faithful,” Erhart said. “We started with a pretty low number, but God kept bringing more players.” The team had only one graduating senior. Even though they were young, they went 12-1 on the year on their way to the ultimate prize. Jesse mentioned the contributors to the team’s success — Terry Caywood, head of HCA’s main campus, gave the team his unrelenting support with his dedication and faithfulness. Tena Mitchell, head of the HCA Lantana campus, was supportive and exemplified true leadership for the school

www.LantanaLiving.com

and its students. Finally, Dustin Tarpley, the head coach and athletic director, led the effort to get the team up and running. “We have so many leaders at every position. Our quarterback, Ethan Bishop, had a stellar year. Jaybryan Broussard led the league in total yards while playing running back and wide receiver,” Jesse said. A team doesn’t stop after one championship, and HCA Lantana will have to look toward a repeat championship next year as they start playing against bigger schools in a larger division. “This season will be hard to beat. However, we have our sights set on building on this season and only improving,” Jesse said.

UNHEALTHY

n general, our society spends an excessive amount of time staring at screens throughout the day. So, after closing up the day’s work or schoolwork, is it okay to spend hours gaming with friends? When video-game life replaces real-life with family and friends, is it a sign of addiction? In this COVID pandemic, the question remains now more relevant than ever — how much is too much?

Gaming problems: who’s at risk? Why is gaming so appealing? First, let me say that playing video games is a fun and normal part of being a kid. However, there are a small number of kids who have a hard time controlling the time they spend gaming. And let’s be honest, there are plenty of adults out there with the same problem. Researchers have been studying gaming habits and are learning more about who is high-risk for ‘unhealthy gaming’ and why. During a 6-year study, they noticed that about 10% of adolescents had symptoms of unhealthy gaming that got worse over time.

Research suggests that video gaming is like gambling in that it targets and activates the reward systems in the brain. What is unhealthy gaming? There is no official diagnosis for gaming disorder in the United States, but it will not be long. The World Health Organization (WHO) does recognize “gaming disorder” as an official condition. In countries like South Korea and China, there are already treatment programs in place to help people hooked on gaming. Here are some things you might notice with unhealthy gaming habits.

younger children. Encourage them to play with tangible toys, books, crayons, etc.

Parents should set a good example

and seek help for yourself if you need it. Adults hooked on gaming are also

more prone to depression. Distracted

parents often miss clues that their child needs attention and/or respond more

harshly. Excessive gaming can cause you to miss important moments with your

child, and it definitely makes it harder

to convince your child not to spend too much time gaming.

Please remember, most children and teens who play video games do not

become addicted. When gaming starts to get in the way of other parts of life, please step in early. Talk with your

physician or counselor if your efforts are unsuccessful.

hen we last visited with Phillip Smithwick, Owner of Seven Loaves Catering in Lewisville, we talked with him about a dream he had to get back to his BBQ roots and open a BBQ food truck to serve the local community.

Fast forward to 2020 - private and corporate events slowed down allowing Phillip to pursue that dream of opening his food truck - now known as Southern Drawl BBQ.

They’ve got everything you could possibly

WHY TESTOSTERONE

REPLACEMENT?

S

by Ashley Wagner | photo courtesy of Ashley Wagner

ince this issue is focused on health and fitness, we felt it was the perfect time to give you the inside scoop on testosterone therapy and dispel a few myths surrounding this topic. There has been an explosion of popularity surrounding this curious little hormone, and most of the individuals in the 40-and-over age group who have tried it won’t ever go back to life without it. Let’s start with the basics though: what is testosterone? Testosterone is a hormone produced normally by both men and women. Among other things, it plays an important role in bone mass, sex drive, maintaining lean

muscle mass, mental well-being, and energy. In men, it is produced in the testicles. In women, it is produced mostly in the ovaries and adrenal glands. As you probably suspected, women produce much less than men, but it does not mean it is less important to women. Let me say that again for emphasis — it is not less important to women! As we age, like everything else, our testosterone levels decline. As a result, maintaining lean muscle becomes much harder, and our energy levels and libido often decline. In other words, if you are over 40 and do not like maintaining lean muscle, you don’t like energy, and you don’t enjoy sex, then you should probably stay away from testosterone. How do we increase testosterone levels? There are several options that I would love to discuss with you in further detail when you come in for a visit, but you can use creams, injections, or pellets to bring your testosterone to a high-normal value. The goal is to optimize your levels. Normal levels in women range from 15 to 70ng/dL. In men, the normal range is from 300 to 1,000ng/dL. What if your level is 15 for a woman or 300 for a man, but you would feel better, think better, and stay leaner at 70-90 for a woman or 1,000-1,100 for a man? Does it not make sense to supplement what your own body makes? Women often ask if it will make them look masculine, and men worry it may turn them into a muscle-bound freak. The short answer to both of these worries is no. Remember that we are optimizing your levels, not taking you to four, five, or ten times over what is considered normal. Does insurance cover it? First, we do not accept insurance because we believe insurance does not allow us to spend the necessary time to really focus on you and your hormone goals. We check labs regularly and do things insurance won’t pay for and frankly won’t understand. In the interest of full disclosure, there are places that will accept your insurance if your levels are low enough. However, we provide a higher level of care than insurance allows. We also offer hormone replacement therapy memberships that provide consistent, affordable treatment to our patients.

Ashley Wagner, Nurse Practitioner Ashley developed a passion for helping people early in life and elected to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She has served as an Emergency Room Nurse at Baylor University Medical Center Level 1 Trauma Center, worked in the Parkland Hospital Emergency Room Level 1 Trauma Center and successfully completed her Critical Care Residency, and excelled into leadership positions including Charge Nurse and became a preceptor for new graduate nurses before pursuing her career as a Nurse Practitioner in Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics. At Live Young Wellness Spa, Ashley now performs injectables and specializes in the medical management for our Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy patients.

Playwright George Bernard Shaw said, “Youth is wasted on the young,” and undoubtedly meant it to be humorous. But I firmly believe you can maintain some of that youthful energy by replacing the hormones your body cannot quite produce at the same levels anymore. We see a limited number of clients for hormone replacement therapy and have had a waiting list for this high demand treatment. Give us a call and schedule your appointment today. We would love to meet you and help you optimize your hormones! 60 | LANTANA LIVING | JANUARY 2021
