Leaving a Positive
Family Legacy by Susan Neuhalfen
I
n his 30 years as an estate planner, Bartonville resident Guy Hatcher has worked with some very successful individuals and families. After sifting through legal documents, he began to see a pattern. He learned that “stuff” was just one component of what he was doing.
“What I quickly learned was that the
most valuable and critical part of estate planning really doesn’t have much to
do with the ‘stuff‘ at all,” Hatcher wrote
in his book, Your Future Reflection, How to Leave a Legacy Beyond Money. “I
discovered that when the finish line in
the race of life begins to come into view,
we begin to wonder if we’ll leave behind a legacy that will continue to have a
positive impact on the world long after we’re gone.“
“Through my research, real-world experience, and revelation I have come to understand that no matter who you are, where you are in life, or what mistakes you’ve made in the past, it’s possible to radically improve your future impact on those you love and the world they will inherit.” The first thing to understand, according to Hatcher, is that there is a difference between legacy and heritage. Do You Really
NEED
Protein Shakes?
W
by Susan Neuhalfen
e all have protein powder in our pantry. Some use it daily while others use it a few times
a week or less. The question is, do people
really need to supplement their diet with a protein shake?
With the paleo and low carb diets, the
popularity of proteins has gone through the roof. The recommended daily allowance for proteins is .36g per pound of bodyweight. This is for
those not active and not looking to
gain muscle mass or lose fat. This is the bare minimum requirement.
For athletes who work out 12 hours or more per week it is recommended to
keep protein just below 1g per 1 pound of body weight (closer to 1 for men and less for women).
The truth is, most people can get what
they need in terms of proteins from the
12 | LANTANA LIVING
| July 2017
foods in their diets. The key is to eat
lean proteins such as lean beef, turkey,
chicken and fish, and dairy products such as cheese. To put it in perspective, one
chicken breast contains about 30 grams
of protein. Some protein shakes have as
much as 80 grams of protein per serving. So what is the answer? Protein shakes are fine for meal replacement, but use the
powder in meals to get what you need
without the added calories. For example, add it to oatmeal, waffles (using powder in place of flour) or even coffee for a filling treat.
Just remember to properly balance
nutrition. Protein is a nutrient. If you’re eating meat to get more protein,
remember that you may also be ingesting salt, fat and a lot of calories. Make certain to balance the protein with fats and carbs for proper nutrition.

Coaching Changes
Come To Guyer
Lance Brown
by Steve Gamel
In the span of just less than a month, the school announced it had hired a new head golf coach, assistant golf coach, and head girls soccer coach – all of them connected by one coach’s decision to leave Guyer entirely. In May, longtime golf coach Roddy Adams left the program he started in 2005 for crosstown rival Denton Ryan. That move prompted Guyer officials to move Adams’ faithful assistant, Lance Brown, into the head role in early June. But now Brown needed an assistant, and the first person to throw his name into the hat was girls soccer coach Kenny Blevins. Blevins got the job, which then led to Mandy Hall coming over from Denton Braswell to fill Blevins’ spot. The entire shakeup, including Adams’ departure, took only a month to complete. Despite the craziness surrounding these coaching moves, all the coaches involved will only make their schools better. Adams started the Guyer program in 2005 and led both the boys and girls teams to the state tournament. It is expected that he could one day do the same for Ryan, which has struggled to maintain consistency with its program over the years.
16 | LANTANA LIVING
| July 2017
Meanwhile, Brown has been by Adams’ side for the
previous nine golf seasons. He knows all the athletes and is expected to make a seamless transition.
Kenny Blevins
Bringing Blevins into the golf fold as an assistant
gives the program another state-title winning coach. Blevins led the Guyer girls soccer team to its lone state title in 2013.
Blevins is a certified golf instructor and had been looking for an opportunity to transition into golf
without having to leave Guyer. Hall started her career at Lake Dallas before moving to Braswell last school year.

t’s back to school for all those little kiddos, and I always get a kick out of the responses I get when conversing
with my pediatric patients about their day at school. From what I have gathered
over the years, the overwhelming favorite subject is “lunch”, the favorite game
played at recess is “I don’t know”, and the most common newly learned topic for the day is “nothing”. With this amount of enthusiasm, I am always pleased to
remind them how nice it is of their dentist to get them out of school.
Joking aside, back to school is a good
time to remind us all of the importance
of education. The single most important aspect of my role as your dentist is to
educate you on oral health. So here are
a few quick dental education points that I most frequently explain:
At what age should your child start dental appointments?
The American Academy of Pediatric
Dentistry recommends children seeing their dentist as early as one year old or
at the sign of their first tooth. This is not only important to get a baseline on the child’s dental development, but also to educate parents on good oral hygiene
and nutritional habits as a preventative measure against tooth decay.

I hope that you find this list to be doable and functional. Put a kit together and keep it in your car for those impromptu minor summertime emergencies.
QUICK GUIDE TO A FIRST AID KIT: 1. Purchase a basic pre-made first aid kit to get you started. Try to get one with a container large enough to add things or get a small duffle bag.
• Small scissors and Tweezers
2. Add to the kit (examples below):
• Topical and Oral Benadryl
• Water bottle for cleaning out wounds and battling dehydration. • Electrolyte/rehydration solutions or packets • Flashlights and batteries • Wet wipes

IT’S GETTING HOT OUT HERE... Let’s talk about patios and the most pressing questions we hear when people want to build this new outdoor space. WHAT ARE THE PATIO OPTIONS
TO CONSIDER?
When it comes to all the different patio and outdoor space we build, there are
some things that are more common than others to consider when planning your new space or update. HOW DO I FIT EVERYTHING I WANT INTO THE SPACE I HAVE?? This is where hiring a “patio designer” and not just “patio builder” comes into play,
as there are many things to consider when manipulating your wants and needs into a predefined space. Here are a couple things your designer will be looking for:
1. How many people will be on the patio at a time and how much turf or bed space are you willing to lose?
2. What exposure does the back of the house have and what are the light requirements on the bordering interior rooms?
3. Are you looking for dining space or more casual sitting areas OR both?

t wasn’t long ago that Lantana residents Erin and Frank Lundie were looking for a preschool for their children. Erin, who had been a teacher, curriculum instructor, and assistant principal, was obviously interested in the academic side of things, but with her educational background she knew she was looking for a program that promoted overall development for her children. That’s when they found Primrose Schools, which presented a perfect balance of academic and social growth.
The Lundies were so impressed with the curriculum and their family’s experience at the school, they decided to start their own

“The assessment tools we use are for
everything from physical development
to math reasoning,” said Erin. “They are
designed specifically for their age group.” Though Primrose School of Lantana has
a reputation for being a very high caliber academic school, the Lundies believe
that social and emotional development is important as well. They foster a warm family atmosphere so that the parents
will feel comfortable and the students will want to learn.

faculty works with students on their
communication skills. They learn not only how to interact with their fellow
classmates, but also how to talk to adults. Because the Lundies believe that it is
critical to foster a child’s curiosity, they also believe that they must feel comfortable enough to ask questions.
“At Primrose, we believe who children become is as important as what they
know,” said Erin, “School readiness isn’t just about academics. When a child
goes off to school, they also need to
be prepared socially and emotionally.
It is important for children to be both
confident and curious. They may not leave here knowing everything, but they do
leave here ready to seek information and ask for help when they need it.”
Also on the social side, the Primrose
School of Lantana believes that every
child represents the promise of a better tomorrow. They are teaching children
about giving by sponsoring a seven-year old girl through the Save the Children®
Child Sponsorship Program. The students write her letters and draw pictures and she writes back to tell them about her
life. They learn from each other while also learning to help others. They have other
events throughout the year such as a book drive, and Spring Fling Family Bingo Night where children learn the joy of giving.
Primrose School of Lantana also offers
afterschool programs for children up to
12 years of age. They offer pick-up at all
three Lantana elementary schools, as well as Hilltop Elementary in Argyle. During
summer and Christmas breaks, they have www.yourcandidmemories.com

for Back To School Fidgets
F
idgets! These spinning, winding, clicking toys are all the rage! Fidgets keep your brain focused by stimulating it at the optimal level for learning, used correctly and in thoughtful ways.
As a play therapist for many years, I use toys and games to teach and learn all the time. The best fidgets fit the four guidelines listed and many have been around for years: worry stones, clicky pens, nuts and bolts, and a few others. For ideas on what fidgets are out there that I’ve found helpful, go to my blog on acorncounseling.services. Fidget spinners and cubes should be reserved for those whose mental health professionals specifically recommend them [except as really great toys]. As always, check with your school before sending anything. Christy Graham provides training for parents, child care workers, and therapists who work with children. Fidgets should not be distracting. If you need to see the fidget and/or if you can hear the fidget, it is too distracting. Schools are beginning to require a medical reason for these fidgets as they are becoming a distraction to learning instead of an aid.
Fidgets should fit in your pocket. Obviously, a person who needs a fidget to focus will need it throughout the day, particularly when stressed. Keeping it in your pocket allows easy access and can even be used while IN the pocket.
Fidgets should be tough. People who use them, use them ALL THE TIME. If it is easily broken, you can’t depend on it.
Fidgets have to be intriguing. If you aren’t interested, you won’t use it.

Teach Your Children Well by Susan Neuhalfen
W
ith school starting, this is the perfect opportunity to regain structure in the house and teach children responsibility. Take these few weeks before school starts to get your children’s schedules back on track and establish routines, which will serve them throughout the school year, not to mention the rest of their lives.
Here are a few ideas for getting things in order:

necessary. By the way, according to the National Sleep Foundation, kids aged
5-12 need 10 to 11 hours of sleep each
night. Children aged 13-18 need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours per night so set the bedtime accordingly.
Lay out clothes the night before
To make getting up even easier, have your children lay out their clothes the night
before. It will give children an opportunity to think about the day, check the weather

It’s hard between sports practices and
homework to put together a set schedule but do your best. Set up chores for all of
the kids that include sweeping the kitchen, setting the table, loading/
unloading the dishwasher, taking out the trash, also learning to do laundry,
when you show them the right way to do chores unlike teenagers (sigh).
Set the example
It’s important that children go to school
at their happiest and most relaxed state,
so set the example and be ready yourself before they get up. If you’re stressed,
they’re stressed. If you’re disorganized, they’re disorganized. To help them be
their best at school, make sure you set the example.
Mistakes Happen
Finally, let them make mistakes. It’s so hard to watch them go to school in shorts when they should be in pants,

Easy Ways To Be A
Successful Business Owner I
'm not suggesting I know everything about being a successful business owner. Anyone will tell you that being in business for yourself is hard work, and every day I'm learning something new.
But when I started my writing and editing company, Edit This, I promised myself I would make up for what I didn't know by not complicating the easy stuff along the way. The "easy stuff" is anything that makes life simple for my clients. It’s stuff we all should be doing – sort of like tying your shoes before walking out the door every morning.
Treat people the way you want to be treated
When in doubt, over-communicate
granted. How you treat your customers
Going out of your way to communicate
Some business owners take this for directly impacts your long-term success in business. If you treat people with respect and honesty, they'll come back.
Answer your phone, reply to texts and emails
Answering the phone, returning a call, or responding timely to a text or email should be standard. I try to return every call, text, and email within an hour – worse case scenario, 24 hours max. If customers can't find you, they'll call someone else, right?
Never reschedule appointments/meetings
There are always exceptions, but your clients' time is just as valuable as yours. If you are going to commit to meeting them on a certain day at a specific time, keep the appointment. 42 | LANTANA LIVING
I make this a habit in everything I do. ensures transparency, facilitates
innovation, and keeps everyone on the same page with expectations.
Under-promise and over-deliver
Too many business owners get caught
up in trying to be competitive with other companies that they make outlandish
promises. A customer’s happiness revolves around expectations. Under-promise and over-deliver – you're more likely to create a memorable moment for that client.
Avoid answering your cell phone when with a client
If you are with a client, the last thing you
want them to see is the top of your head
as you look down to answer a text or pick up a phone call. That sends the message
that you aren't interested in their business. If you are expecting a phone call, let the client you are meeting with know.

Know your worth
Customers are always looking for good
deals, but you also have to keep in mind that most people will pay at or above
your fee if they know they are going to
be taken care of and the job is going to
get done right. If they feel they have the right person for the job, they'll give you the deal.
If you make a mistake, own up to it and fix it
It's bound to happen where you will make
a mistake in business. Own up to it and go above and beyond to make things right.
Use a calendar
I wrote an article before about the benefits of using a calendar. Doing so, and staying diligent about it, will help you stay on schedule and plan ahead.
Don't burn bridges
You never want to burn a bridge if
you can help it, because the person or organization you burn could end up
becoming your biggest nightmare. Plus, it's just not nice. Come up with options
to resolve the problem instead of saying something you will regret.

ust as there are national parks in the United States, so there are also
national marine sanctuaries that are open to the public. Approximately
150 miles off the Coast of Galveston Island lay the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. It’s one of the only 14 federally designated underwater areas protected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration’s (NOAA) Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, and the only site located in the Gulf of Mexico.
No one is quite sure how the NOAA Flower Garden Banks developed. It’s a jewel in the middle of the Gulf, housing a variety of wildlife more common to areas of the Caribbean. Sitting on salt domes, 23 species of coral grow on these banks. What the coral lacks in variety, it makes up for in beauty and size. Because the sanctuary is farther from shore, only more advanced divers visit the area. The typical dive is between 70 and 90 feet. This keeps the banks relatively unscathed as it flourishes more naturally than reefs that are frequented by tourists.

Shopping
Hacks
B
by Susan Neuhalfen
ack to school shopping, especially for multiple kids, can be taxing on your patience as well as your budget. While we can’t do much about your patience, we can certainly help your budget. Here are some school clothes shopping hacks to help you weather the next couple of weeks:
OUT WITH THE OLD
Clean out the closets – Start by cleaning out closets. Figure out what fits and what doesn’t so you’re not buying doubles. Then bag up the goods (providing they’re still wearable) and a have a party with some other moms. Put out tables for the clothing with sizes listed and let everyone exchange away. Designate one person to take the remainder of the clothes to the donation center. If the clothes are no longer wearable, take them to Recycle2Support. They can be recycled to make clothing and other goods for those in need.
CHECK PRICE MATCHING
Price match - For clothing, you will find that many places price match. Walmart and Target price match everything so underwear, socks and the basics are covered. What you might not know is that stores like Macy’s, Nordstrom, Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, J Crew, and Kohl’s also price match. Just make sure you have read and understand their policies before you go shopping.
RESALE CLOTHING STORES
Hit the thrift store - Many kids grow out of their clothes before they wear out. Plato’s Closet, Thrift Giant, Kid to Kid and many others offer great quality clothing
at a discount. There are plenty of online garage sales (Facebook, eBay, Thredup. com, and more) as well.
TAX FREE HOLIDAYS
Save the 8.25% - The next tax-free holiday in Texas is August 11-13 where retailers offer clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100 without sales tax (8.25%). Crowds can get a little crazy so this includes items purchased online, by phone and by mail. Layaway plans are allowed if needed.
ONLINE COUPONS
Check the website - Before you go anywhere you should always check the website of the store to see if there is an online coupon. Nine times out of ten, there is. There are also lots of other online coupons and apps. Retailmenot.com, couponsherpa.com, coupons.com are the three most recommended. Retailmenot. com is the one that most of the retailers interviewed highly recommended. It’s also a phone app so you can just show your coupon on your mobile device when you’re ready to check out. Malls including the Golden Triangle Mall have savings through using their Wi-Fi when you go to the mall. Also, more savings can be found at shopgoldentriangle.com.
GIFT CARDS
Gather old gift cards – Right now, take 15 minutes to go through your drawers, your purse, your leftover gift bags, and everyplace else you can think to look for new or partially used gift cards. Gift cards, once used, usually have an expiration date so you want to take advantage of them. Put them all in one place, either in your purse or in the car so you don’t forget them. Gift cards at a reduced price – Places like Sam’s and Staples as well as sites like GiftCards.com and Amazon allow you to purchase gift cards at a reduced price, allowing you to save a little bit of money.
BOGO
Buy one get one free – When you find something that your child likes such as shoes, and there is a BOGO offer, buy the next size or ½ size up so you’re not having to search around halfway through the school year for a new pair of shoes. Kids can be picky and they can also have trouble letting go of something they like, such as a t-shirt or favorite pair of jeans. If you can get a BOGO, get the next size up so you’re covered. One of the newest ways to do this is a medical model called Direct Primary Care.

To put it in perspective, with insurance, well over 60% of doctor’s office costs are administrative, which is why DPC doctors can survive on the monthly cost alone. Many of the DPC doctors say that they don’t make as much money, but the trade off is worth it.

“Insurance is getting so hard to deal with to focus on the patient when so much of DPC is growing in the North Texas area and facilities are popping up in Frisco and Roanoke with another to soon open in Flower Mound. Dixie finished with a waterproof sweat

beauty shouldn’t deal with runny makeup in the heat.
Hair by Carley Molly is a natural red head and wanted to incorporate darker reds and blonde highlights without looking too blonde. Carley used the balayage and foil
technique to highlight a rich copper red
which complimented her fair skin and light eyes. She used medium copper brown to mask her gray hair and to keep her from
getting a harsh line during her grow out. Molly wanted to keep her length and
incorporate some long layers and side bangs and the results were stunning!

Now, let’s introduce you to the Mexican comfort food that is Chiles Rellenos
(pronounced Chee-lehs Rey-eh-noes).
They are stuffed poblano peppers that
are souffle battered and fried until crispy.
We highly recommend the one with fajita steak that is covered in the ranchero sauce. It comes with a side of charro
beans and red rice, however don’t get
that. Pay the extra and instead get Mexico City Street Corn and refried beans. The
street corn is grilled corn on the cob that
is smothered with queso crema añejob (a
crumbly salted cheese) and sprinkled with
powdered red pepper. Their refried beans may be a common Mexican staple but it pairs so well with the Chile Rellenos. After polishing off your dinner pour
yourself another glass of the Frozen
Sangria Swirl and order some dessert! We highly recommend their flan (ask them to hold the lime). It’s a creamy
custard dessert that is light and extremely flavorful. Take your time and eat it slow as you enjoy some great conversation and a nice evening outdoors.
See, we have the answer to all of life’s problems.
