hen we are children, we think we know what we might want to be when we grow up. We are certain, for a while, then we change our minds again and again. It’s accepted because we are young and we have that privilege. Even in college, we can change majors a few times before we need to declare one. And sometimes, even that goes out the window when we get into a profession we were groomed for, only to find out that it’s just not what we envisioned.

passionate about those things. You see, the great thing about passion is that I feel it’s infectious in the most wonderfully exhausting experiences.

The repeated tune I hear on blogs, podcasts, books and videos these days is finding balance, purpose and happiness. So many of us are running through the day focusing on what we have to do verses why are we doing it. The meaning of life is to find your gift while the purpose is to share it. For me, it’s my passion to help people and that touches most things on my ongoing ‘to-do list’. I’ve been told that I’m sometimes overwhelmingly

I love talking about passion … for me, it was the discovery of what makes my heart beat fast. No matter what else is going on, that moment when I am right in the middle of sharing what I love and fall into a trance in which I get lost and forget everything … pure bliss! If we find purposeful work we love, get excited about and it helps someone else in the process, that’s when you know you’re onto something big. Our greatest to-do list in this lifetime is to discover and then put into action, our intended purpose to the best of our ability. When your enthusiasm is palpable, people want a ticket on your happy train. The key to harnessing that passion is understanding your “why.”

Getting a

Yourself

Running START by Susan Neuhalfen

R

unning has its advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it’s hard on the body. It jars joints and causes tight hamstrings. On the other hand, it’s a very quick way to lose weight and a great motivator. It is also addictive, and once that addiction is discovered by a runner, the euphoria is unmatched. For those just starting to run, it can be intimidating. Luckily thousands before have taken the time to create the best equipment available to make learning to run easier than ever.

Here are a few first steps to make that transition to running: Couch to 5K Apps Signing up for a run is a great way to motivate yourself and there is no better motivator than a 5k (3.1 miles). Unlike a 1 mile fun run, it’s just long enough to be a challenge. There are several apps entitled “Couch to 5k” for the beginning runner. Many are free and some work better than others depending on the type of phone used. A few recommended include: Run5k, 5k Runner, C25K, 5k Coach, Total Couch to 5k. These will give the runner schedules (including makeup schedules for those runs missed), monitor running activities and motivate the runner to reach his or her goals. After accomplishing the 5k, the runner will then graduate to a general running app.

Yourself Nutrition Yourself:

Spring Keeping the

in Your Step

D

ear Annette: Spring is coming and I would like to have more energy to enjoy it. What would give me a good energy boost?

Dear Reader: Good for you for striving for optimal health and energy. There are two ways to approach this: • Take away things that steal energy • Add things to spark energy Sounds easy and simple enough but how do we do this? Top five things that rob us of energy: • A poor diet is the number one culprit. Sugar can give us a high for a short period but then drops us like a rock. If you use sugary or diet drinks to pick you up during the day you are setting yourself up for the fall later. Fried foods are often nutrient negative. They cause more depletion of energy than they give. This is true of all processed foods. Taking these out of your diet will certainly increase energy. • Movement is vital for energy. Too much exercise can rob your

adrenals and minerals, but too little can mean you are stagnate. Take stagnation out of your day. How much time do you spend sitting either at work, home or in the car?

• Sleep is how we rebuild to have energy. If lack of sleep is a part of your week make a change as it will rob your energy. Plan on 7-8 hours per night. Lack of proper minerals from diet and lack of movement might be keeping you awake. • Clutter robs us of energy. Getting rid of clutter around us reduces stress. Much of our stress we cannot control. We can control the spaces we live in. An uncluttered home, car, and work space help many people feel less stressed and increases energy. • Negative emotions can certainly rob us of energy. We cannot digest our food properly when we harbor emotions such as anger or resentment. Journal daily to determine what proportion of your day is taken up with negative news, emotions, etc. We need to be aware of what is there before we can start to remove it. What are the top five things we can add for energy? • Minerals are the spark plugs for the body. We often focus on vitamins but if we lack certain minerals we can feel stressed, anxious, unable to sleep, and very low energy. Eating whole clean foods will help us with

12 | LANTANA LIVING

| MARCH 2017

minerals. Ask your Doctor to check both your macro and trace minerals. Mineral supplement may be very helpful. It could be a big key to low energy. Nuts, seeds, grains, beans, shellfish can be the some of the best sources for minerals from your diet. • Daily walk can be a huge energy booster. Even if you exercise in other ways walking can boost energy. Walking has a very calming and restorative effect on the body. Movement is key to energy. • Water is a must for energy. Most people are spending a part of the day dehydrated. Start each day with some lemon and water. Try drinking a glass of water every three hours throughout the day. • Relaxation gives us energy. Find a little time to relax especially before meals. We can absorb the nutrients and minerals we need for energy when we are in the right state of mind. Take as little as five minutes before eating each meal to slow breathing and breathe deep. This little exercise lets your body be in rest and digest mode. We all think we do not have time for relaxation. Five minutes before each meal adds up to a lot of minutes of relaxation in a month. • Gratitude is vital for energy. I like to think of gratitude as an essential nutrient for energy. Starting each day being grateful for simple things in your life gives you energy. Positive thoughts not only make us feel better mentally but impacts us on a physiological level. In the field of positive psychology, feeling gratitude is key to energy. It is also key to proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Retiring from Your

MARRIAGE? Time to Consider Your

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

& RETIREMENT FUNDS by Charla Bradshaw, KoonsFuller Family Law

Y

ou don’t have to be 65 when you retire from your marriage, but you still need take care of the funds you get when you turn that age. Will you be able to keep all of it, some of it, or none of it? Bad news first: The presumption in Texas is that all property is community property and can be divided in a divorce.

The good news: Texas also recognizes separate property, which cannot be divided in a divorce. Separate property consists of property a person had on the date of marriage, property that was a gift, or property that was inherited.

Sponsored Content

Retirement, and certain employee benefits are presumed to be community property and can be divided by the court. If a divorcing employee believes that any of their retirement or employee benefits are separate property, the employee will have the burden to prove that it is their separate property. It is important for both divorcing spouses to seek legal advice before dividing such assets. Why? Because bad things can happen. Example A: an employee spouse loses benefits that were rightfully her separate property. If this happens, the court cannot “fix” the problem, because it is a mistake that cannot be reversed. Example B: a non-employee loses out because the benefit was not divided correctly, sending everyone back to court. In both cases, a savvy family lawyer probably could have avoided a lot trouble. Examples of retirement and employee benefits that can be divided by the court

are: pensions, 401(k)s, employee stock purchase plans, employee stock option plans, restricted stock awards, restricted stock units, deferred compensation, state retirement (e.g. Teacher Retirement System, Texas Municipal Retirement System, Texas County District Retirement System, etc.), and federal retirement (e.g. military, Federal Employee Retirement System, Civil Service Retirement System, Thrift Savings Plan), and bonuses. When retirement and employee benefits and plans are divided in a divorce, an order in addition to the final divorce document is almost always necessary. Such additional order is vital for the recipient to actually receive their share of the funds. Without the additional order, the recipient could lose the benefits forever. The final divorce document is not enough. So what if you’ve been divorced (regardless how many years ago), and you were awarded a portion of your exspouse’s retirement or employee benefits? You should make sure that there is a proper order on file with the plan. If not, you should seek legal advice in order to obtain such an order. There is usually no time limit to obtain the order; however, if

your ex-spouse dies or retires and receives all the funds, then you may be out of luck. Likewise, the employee spouse in this example has an interest in such orders being completed for the recipient spouse. This is because the administrator of the plan may have frozen the assets in contemplation of an order being received for the recipient spouse. If this is the case, then the employee spouse may find out at retirement that they cannot start their retirement benefits until the order is completed, or until they receive proof that the ex-spouse did not receive a portion of the asset. Let’s face it: retirement and employee benefits are often the largest, most complicated assets to be divided in a divorce. Your marriage may be over, but you’re still headed to 65…get with a family lawyer to make sure you still have these assets when you get there.

ur makeover covergirl Janet Horton has been battling Multiple Sclerosis for almost 30 years. During this time she has raised two successful children as a single mom, completed a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from University Texas-Arlington and has worked for the Tarrant County Probation Department for over 10 years, juggling a huge caseload. In addition she works a second job as a cashier at Target on the weekends to supplement her income. This is a remarkable woman who never puts herself first. If there was ever someone who deserved a day of beauty, it’s Janet. Makeup by April Humen First I used natural tones for the makeup to let her natural beauty shine. She has beautiful bone structure so I filled in her brow to highlight her deep-set eyes. I used a sugarplum on her lips to enhance the green tones in her eyes and to compliment the tones in her beautiful strawberry hair. Hair - The Look: By Latish I gave Janet a beautiful new color 8N Medium Blonde to increase her shine. To restore hair bonds I used B3 Bond Builder Demi. Then we added a pop of baby lo-lites for dimension, followed by a Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Treatment which will reduce her frizzniess and allow her to spend less rime drying and styling her hair. What Does A

Women’s Wellness : Yourself

Heavy Menstrual Cycle

D

MEAN?

o you have menstrual cycles (menses) that are heavy? Have you ever asked yourself what is

considered normal? Normal is often what you have gotten used to. Many women with excessively heavy menses will say,

“I’ve been handling it and I can continue.” When you have to miss out on work

or social functions secondary to heavy menses, you very likely have menses

that are too heavy. Another measure of heavy menses is the speed at which a change in pad or tampon is needed. If you are filling a pad or tampon in 2 hours or less that is also

considered too heavy. If a cycle is

heavy like this for one half day that may certainly be more tolerable

than having several days of heavy

flow. So quite often we bargain with ourselves and make it through.

Time away from activities is bad enough, but very often heavy bleeding results in decreased energy. It is a good idea to

make sure you are not getting anemic as taking extra iron could help your body

recover more quickly. Imagine what you could do with more energy.

If you find out that you do have heavy menses, evaluation and diagnosis are important. There are many causes of excessive menses. By far, the most common cause of excessive menses are hormones. OTHER POSSIBLE CAUSES OF HEAVY MENSES INCLUDE: polyps or fibroids; infection; endocrine; blood clotting disorder or cancer. Do not be afraid to ask your OB/GYN questions and see if your situation needs evaluation. We all deserve to live life to the fullest.

“Moving ahead, I have made the decision to transfer as a graduate student-athlete for the upcoming football season and want to take this time to thank all that have helped pave the way for my career including coaches, teammates, fans and more,” Jefferson said in his post. He went on to add, “I will forever be a Sun Devil and hope you all can respect my

decision to take the next steps to advance

my football and academic career wherever that may be.”

The question now, the paper reported,

is if the Mean Green is interested in the

former local product. He could be a great addition for North Texas, which lost three

of its top four wide receivers after going to a bowl game this past season.

Jefferson graduated from Guyer in 2013 and was part of that year’s state title-

winning team. He caught 54 passes that

year for a team-leading 901 yards and 10

touchdowns. He went on to Arizona State and caught 23 passes for 304 yards in his first two seasons. He caught two balls for 21 yards in 2016.

hile most children meet milestones around a certain age, some may take longer to reach them. If you ever have any questions about your child’s development, it is always good to talk to your pediatrician. Trust your instincts and ask questions. Talk with a professional and do not compare your children to other children. There is a ‘range’ of ‘normal’ development and then there are times to be concerned. Establish a good relationship with your pediatrician and the staff and always ask questions and address concerns. Well child checks are frequent from birth to 5 years and yearly beyond that. Maintain these regular visits and please schedule visits any time there is something that seems abnormal, delayed, or odd to you as a parent. 10 Abbreviated Physical, Social, Emotional & Cognitive Milestones to Watch for as Your Child Grows:

ACHIEVING

Dental Harmony by Susan Neuhalfen

e all want the absolute best; to experience that perfect balance that offers us the fullest potential. When seeking our dental care, we should assume the same level of excellence, and that is exactly what we have come to expect from the team at Country Lakes Family Dental in what they coin “dental harmony”. Dental harmony is all about getting the best of both worlds, and the patients of Country Lakes Family Dental have quickly come to enjoy this level of satisfaction with every encounter, from their interactions with each staff member, to the pleasant chair-side manner of Dr. Matt Artho. Since the inception of the dental practice, it has been the goal of Dr. Matt and his team to combine the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of a neighborhood dentist with the advanced quality care expected from a state-of-the-art office. As a Best of Denton County winner four years running, their mission is a proven esteem of their patients.

At the very heart of the vision

of Country Lakes Family Dental is the focus on the family. “We want every family member to feel valued at our practice,”

explains Dr. Matt, himself a father of eight children. “We encourage all

family members to be a part of the

experience. We want both parents and children to participate in each other’s dental care.”

The staff encourages parents to stay with their children during treatment to create a supportive level of

comfort for everyone. It is also not

uncommon that parents are advised to never miss a dental appointment

because of childcare conflicts, as the staff is known to even gratefully hold babies during dental appointments. The same involvement for seniors

or special needs patients and their

caregivers is also strongly advocated.

Another facet of the dental harmony enjoyed at Country Lakes Family Dental is the advanced level of care and multiple treatments available to patients. Dr. Matt’s diverse background, with an undergraduate degree in engineering and an additional Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency, has fostered a synthesis of technology and dental expertise. With digital 3D radiographs and digital impressions, the office is capable of digitally planning implants and crowns prior to the treatment, and in many cases, can complete restorative work the same day. Even esthetic crowns can be manufactured during appointments. Digital impressions can also be used for orthodontic or Invisalign treatment for children and adults. Root canal treatments in the office are also more predictive with 3D radiographs, allowing a visualization of the tooth anatomy prior to treatment.

“Love this place! The staff is friendly, warm and very helpful. Dr. Matt is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, ethical, honest and trustworthy - all the qualities I want in a health provider.” — Luz M.

This enhanced level of care along with the continued education of Dr. Matt couples with his family vision. By offering many treatments within the office, Dr. Matt and his staff have enjoyed the ability to treat all family members, from infants to seniors. Finally, it goes without saying that dental harmony is reached within the staff itself. Patients readily notice the effortless teamwork of the staff at Country Lakes Family Dental. Their focus on the family is translated between team members as they consider themselves a part of a family. Each patient is unique with different expectations, treatments, and history. With Country Lakes Family Dental, you are guaranteed to find what you are looking for ranging from a warm,

to email that many do not know how to address an envelope or write a proper business letter. Every year, April Leatherwood’s 6th grade English class at Harpool Middle School learns to write business letters. Their assignment is to write to an effective business letter. Sometimes they write to ask for information, other times they write just to give that business or their product a compliment. When student Jacob Moore sent a letter to Audi of Dallas, he expected a reply, but they had something else in mind. Jacob loves cars. He loves learning about

General Manager Randy Rogers as much in his letter.

“His letter was so impressive,” said Rogers. “We thought we could send him some information and promotional materials but we really wanted to show him how much his letter meant to us.”

His sister was very excited for him. “Jacob is so shy, we weren’t sure how he would react,” said his sister Emily. “He was so surprised.” Kacy Hendricks, the New Vehicle Inventory Manager at Audi Dallas, presented Jacob with a model of the R8 as well as some promotional materials and then she revved the engine loudly and took him around the parking lot to the delight of all of his classmates who watched and chanted his name. “It was great to see the smile on his face when they put him in the car,” said Leatherwood. “I was so surprised when the dealership asked to come to the school.” Leatherwood, who instructs this exercise every year for her English class said they have gotten responses from many colleges as well as several businesses and sports figures. hat are the most important things to look for in a maid service?

Trustworthiness…consistency…reliability… low employee turnover…

These are qualities that a customer looks

for no matter what the business, but even more so when that business comes into

your home week after week. Delivering on these attributes boils down to two words: the people.

Buckets & Bows’ mission has always been PEOPLE FIRST.

“We value our employees. That’s why we

are voted in the top 3 best places to work,” said owner Debbie Sardone. “We treat our employees like royalty because they make the difference for our customers.”

Buckets & Bows boasts the lowest

Buckets & Bows cleaning technician who’s been with the company for more than 10 years.

Sardone says happy long-term employees are the best way to combat declining

customer service over time, a common problem with many maid services.

“Happy employees means the customer

will get a happy cleaning and that means going above and beyond just a good, thorough cleaning,” said Sardone.

“It means the home will be cared for and the owners will, too.”

Buckets & Bows sets the gold standard in

since recruited over 1,200 maid services all over the US and Canada to do the same, cleaning the homes of over 24,000 women to date. Sardone says the work is life changing for everyone involved – for the family members who see the effects of cancer and how much a clean home lifts the spirits of these women who are in the fight and for Sardone’s team members who love being a part of something bigger than their job. “Making a difference in the community makes all the difference in how you view your job and your life. Employees want to feel like their job matters,” said Sardone. Putting People First is why Buckets & Bows Maid Service is the most trusted name in cleaning, making a difference one home at a time. “It’s a personal business,” says Sardone. “You better get it right.”

is overgrown, and it’s too late to cut it back without damage. We consider ourselves to be “small” local business, only servicing a few hundred lawns a week and having done so for the past 6+ years. In that time, the number of unlicensed, illegal and uninsured maintenance workers has at least tripled. We encourage everyone this year, especially in our competitive Lantana and Argyle markets, to try and see past the benefit of the immediate cheap price and look into the future of our communities. There are hundreds of knowledgeable, tax paying local businesses that do great work, while also giving back and investing in our communities. Please consider supporting those who support our community.
