Fall is in full swing. With busy schedules, it seems impossible to have healthy meals ready for my family. Help! before I go through the drive-thru again! Dear Reader: First, let me congratulate you for not wanting to go through any drive-thru. Children’s brains are still developing and there are now thousands of studies that clearly show that trans fats, processed sugars, and food additives affect how our brains develop and function. That means that fast foods are negatively affecting the brain and the body. So, what is the answer? To be healthy we need to be using our kitchens or have access to healthy “to go’ meals such as the meals we have at Savory Bistro. This time of year, think of soups and one-dish meals that are fast and easy. Most can be frozen and keep for up to 3 months for those nights when there is no time to cook.

ave you ever wondered if those minutes you spend in the gym are
burning fat or just time? Could it be time
to update your outdated exercise routine? Unfortunately if you are like 80% of gymgoers, time is the primary thing you’re
burning. I find it shocking that so many
well-meaning folks are still exercising with such outdated notions of what constitutes an effective workout.
I don’t want that to be you.
Here are the top 3 outdated, time-burning exercise techniques to NOT DO: 1) Slow and Steady Cardio Sessions:

and an increase in your aerobic capacity. 2) Weight Machine Wandering: You’ve seen this character: he wanders among
the weight machines, plops down on an open one and cranks out a set (without
adjusting the weight or seat) and just as quickly as he came, he’s gone off to the next open machine. There’s no rhyme
or reason, and his technique and form
are way off due to his careless use of the
machines. Do I even need to explain how this haphazard exercise technique burns
more time than fat? I didn’t think so. Make

Vitamin D
Deficiency
E
xposure to sunlight can increase levels of vitamin D in the body, therefore most people feel that their levels of vitamin D are acceptable because they get adequate sun exposure. However, it is estimated that 1 billion people worldwide and 41.6% of the U.S. population is vitamin D deficient. The deficiencies are even higher in Hispanics at 69.2%, and African Americans at 82.1% related to increased amounts of melanin in the skin which blocks the sun’s rays. In addition, because of our increased awareness of the risk of skin cancer with sun exposure, limited sun exposure and sunscreen play a role in vitamin D deficiency because they reduce the number of ultraviolet rays that reach the skin.
Vitamin D deficiencies are also found in those who are elderly, obese, or insulin resistant, or have gastrointestinal malabsorption, poor liver or kidney function, a diet low in vitamin D (ie. vegan), hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, lymphomas or take medications which may interfere with vitamin D absorption such as cholestyramine, steroids, antifungals or HIV/AIDs medications. The elderly spends an increased time indoors and efficiency of converting vitamin D decreases with age. Low vitamin D can also contribute to insulin resistance which leads to obesity where increased body fat binds some vitamin D and prevents it from getting absorbed. A body mass index of 30 or greater often have low vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is a fatsoluble vitamin which means it requires dietary fat for breakdown. Individuals with gut malabsorption issues such as lactose intolerance, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, history of gastric bypass surgery or other gastrointestinal disorders have decreased absorption of vitamin D because these individuals do not tolerate fatty foods. Vitamin D is converted by the liver and the kidneys, therefore individuals with poor liver or kidney function are also at risk of having low serum vitamin D. 24 | LANTANA LIVING

f you’ve lived in North Texas long enough, chances are, you’ve already been through it once.
Getting a new roof is usually something
that homeowners deal with once, maybe twice, in their lifetime. Not here. About every six years or so, North Texas sees a hail storm that causes considerable
damage, rendering many roof repairs and replacements. Still, the process is
complicated and frustrating. That’s why it’s important to work with an honest,
reputable roof company who knows how
to handle all that is involved, and do it with the upmost integrity.
3 Kings Roofers is a family owned and
operated business covering North Texas. They are A+ rated by the BBB and are a preferred contractor with several insurance companies.
First, find out if they are insured. If
someone falls or gets hurt, you, the

What’s All the Fuss About With Split Divisions in Class 5A? by Steve Gamel

every team’s fate for realignment day in February.
Sounds like a good plan, right? It’s all in the name of competitive balance, and
having split divisions is really not a foreign concept, anyway. Teams competing in
Class 4A and below are already using it.
For example, Argyle is in Class 4A Division to its own size both during the regular season and playoffs.
But with any great plan, there can
always be the potential for chaos. So what’s all the fuss?
According to a Dallas Morning News
article last month, the biggest concern is fear of the unknown – split divisions
will affect every program differently. For example, Woodrow Wilson High School 36 | LANTANA LIVING

“It levels off the disparity and creates a level playing field, because you won’t have teams with an enrollment number of 1,100 competing against schools with enrollment numbers at 2,200,” Young said. “As an example, Division II could be schools with enrollments between 1,100 and 1,600. Any coach will tell you that numbers are very important.” Another benefit Young pointed to is a consistent playoff structure. Under the current format, teams are split into different divisions once playoffs start, which means teams that win district don’t always get matched up with the right opponent.
The UIL will use enrollment numbers

see cause for concern when it comes to the split division format, especially with the threat of more travel. But that’s where all the concerns should end.
There is also the possibility that the cutoff numbers in each classification (1A through 6A) could change and force teams that are on the bubble between 5A and 6A to move up a weight class. Highland Park, for example, is a large 5A school, but spent 2014 and 2015 in Class 6A and could find itself moved up again. All of this has created quite a lot of conversation among area coaches. Lake Dallas football coach Michael Young can
“If you win your district, you’re supposed to play the fourth place team from whatever district you are lined up with,” Young said. “But it doesn’t always work out that way. We’ve had it happen here where we won our district and ended up facing a second-place team in the first round. That doesn’t make any sense. This new format should fix that.” There are plenty of other coaches who also have come to terms with the potential changes that lie ahead, but it will continue to be a topic of conversation until realignment day. Until then, they’ll simply have to focus on this season and let the chips fall where they may after that.

How to Find the

t’s late. You can’t sleep. Something has to change! You decide to call a therapist tomorrow. As you fall fitfully asleep, you wonder how to find just the right person to help you.
Finding the right therapist doesn’t have to be terrifying. Here are the dos and don’ts:
DO: 1.
2. Focus on cost. Many therapists Ask people you already trust for recommendations. a. Friend Referral - Friends share your life and know what you expect. Ask your friends who has helped them and they may know the exact person to help you. b. Professional Referral Your doctors, teachers and pastors have more contact with therapists than you do. They know reputations and what might work in your situation.
2. Read a blog, an article, or watch a YouTube video on the type of treatment you want. You’ll learn a lot, and may find the expert you’re looking for. 3. Look at professional profiles. LinkedIn, Psychology Today, and counselors’ websites contain pictures, information about their practice and experience that can be helpful in determining a good fit. DON’T: 1. Ask your insurance for a list. Unless you can’t pay out of pocket, you do not want to pick your therapist based on their ability to fill out paperwork. 40 | LANTANA LIVING

Flower Mound’s ambulance bus (AMBUS), along with seven firefighter/paramedics were originally deployed to South Texas on a State Mission Assignment for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. FMFD then sent additional staff assigned to Texas Task Force 2 and Emergency Management Support Teams for search and rescue missions. Additional firefighters were sent not only from FMFD but Lake Cities Fire Department, Southlake and The Colony.
Ashli Wolf organized a huge donation drive for Liberty Christian School. The lobby was FULL (and if you’ve ever been in the lobby you know how big it is) and Ashli herself, armed with gas cans, drove a delivery truck to Houston with the first delivery. They plan to continue their drive for several weeks as the victims will need help for many months to come.
State Farm’s Jim Bridges and Mission Moms of Lantana collected cleaning supplies which Jim drove to Houston & delivered to several churches to all serve their congregations and greater communities.
Sparky Pearson (Kimzeys, Fuzzys and Earl’s 377) and his son, Will (Liberty Christian) took their own boat down and rescued people stranded in their homes.

NO-Fault
is a married person’s voluntary sexual intercourse with a person other than their spouse. 3.
Conviction of a Felony—The court may grant a divorce if during the marriage the other spouse has been convicted of a felony, has been imprisoned for at least one year in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, a federal penitentiary, or the penitentiary of another state, and has not been pardoned. However, the court may not grant a divorce under this section against a spouse who was convicted on the testimony of the other spouse.
4.
Abandonment—The court may grant a divorce in favor of one spouse if the other spouse left the complaining spouse with the intention of abandonment and remained away for at least one year.
5.
Living Apart—The court may grant a divorce in favor of either spouse if the spouses have lived apart for at least three years.
6.
Confinement in a Mental Hospital—The court may grant a divorce if at the time the divorce is filed the other spouse has been confined in a state mental hospital or private mental hospital, in any State, for at least three years, and it appears that the hospitalized spouse’s mental disorder is of such a degree and nature that adjustment is unlikely, or that if adjustment occurs, a relapse is probable.
divorce in Texas A
by Charla Bradshaw, KoonsFuller Family Law
ll States recognize no-fault divorce, although some states require that the spouses live separately for a designated period of time before either of them can file for divorce. In Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Nebraska, Montana, Missouri, Minnesota,
Michigan, Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Hawaii, Florida, Colorado, California, and the District of Columbia, one can only file for divorce on no-fault grounds, and fault grounds are not available. In States that allow fault grounds, traditional fault grounds are adultery, abandonment and cruelty.
The concept of no-fault divorce was introduced to Texas on January 1, 1970, with the introduction of “insupportability” as a ground for divorce. This rather quickly became the basis for granting nearly all of the divorces in Texas. The no-fault ground for divorce means that the court can grant a divorce without regard to fault, if the court finds that “the marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities that destroys the legitimate ends of the marital relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation.” (quoting the Texas Family Code). In the Texas legislature, no-fault divorce has elicited criticism from some groups who have advocated for its repeal, when there are children of the marriage. Legislation to this effect has been introduced in virtually every Texas legislative session since 1997, but has yet to be enacted. Constitutional challenges to the Texas no-fault divorce statute have been unsuccessful in the courts. Some of the arguments put forth against the repeal of nofault divorce in Texas are as follows: 1.
Texas would be the only State w/out no-fault divorce.
2.
The court could only grant the divorce on one of the fault grounds, therefore if the ground is not proven, then the court cannot grant the divorce.

3.
4.
It would reduce the possibility of the spouses reaching agreements because the alleged “wrongdoer” will not want to “agree” to the fault, but may have to agree (even if untrue), in able to get divorced. The result is that more cases will go to trial. If the alleged wrongdoing spouse does
not agree to the fault, the innocent spouse will have to prove the fault of the alleged wrongdoing spouse (at trial) which will force more cases to trial, and which will increase the cost of divorce for the innocent spouse. 5.
If the innocent spouse wants a divorce and cannot prove the fault, then the innocent spouse who desires to get divorced, will have to stay married, therefore punishing the innocent spouse who desires the divorce.
6.
It will promote the spouse who wants a divorce to commit wrongdoing to force the other spouse to file for divorce (i.e. making the marriage unbearable for the innocent spouse).
7.
Increases cohabitation.
8.
Collaborative law (CL) cases: In collaborative law, a participation agreement is required, and in that agreement the spouses must describe the nature and scope of the family law matter. This would involve setting out the fault ground(s) for the divorce, thus stagnating the utilization of collaborative law in divorces.
One can file for divorce on the ground of no-fault (also known as insupportability), and on one or more fault grounds. In Texas, no-fault is the most common ground for divorce, however, fault grounds can also be asserted. Cruelty and adultery are the most commonly asserted, most often as an alternative to insupportability, and to serve as a basis for an unequal division of property, or to strategically to assist in a custody dispute. The majority of divorce cases settle without going to court, and the majority of spouses agree that their divorce will be granted on no-fault grounds.
Fault grounds continue to exist in the Texas statutes. Following are the fault grounds for divorce in Texas: 1.
2.
Cruelty—The court may grant a divorce if a spouse is guilty of cruel treatment toward the other spouse of a nature that renders further living together unbearable. Adultery—The court may grant a divorce if a spouse has committed adultery. Adultery

What’s in Style for North Texas
Fall/Winter 2017? I

Plaid is a primary pattern for Autumn/Winter 2017, but it’s not just for flannel button-ups anymore. Plaid is getting an update with classic silhouettes like the bell sleeve jacket pictured. Feel free to play with the pattern by adding a pop of animal print or embroidered shoes.
Effortlessly add texture to any outfit with the perfect faux suede piece. From leggings and tops to moto jackets and dresses, this lush fabric will be the coziest and most stylish addition to your closet.
