Women’s Health
HAS NEVER BEEN MORE
IMPORTANT
I
read somewhere recently that women are the cornerstone of a family’s overall health. Needless to say, ensuring they have access to quality healthcare can lead to improved health for children and families. From pregnancy and childbirth to staying on top of breast cancer screenings, heart disease, osteoporosis, and even menopause, women’s health is a massive undertaking and something all of us — men included — should take very seriously. In the meantime, I thought I’d share a few inspiring quotes from women that relate to this topic. These quotes were pulled from various sources on the Internet. “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” – Coco Chanel “I appreciate healthcare that gets to the root cause of our symptoms and promotes wellness, rather than the onesize-fits-all drug-based approach to treating disease. I love maintaining an optimal quality of life - naturally.” – Suzanne Somers “You always have to remember to take of yourself, first and foremost. Because when you stop taking care of yourself, you get out of balance and you really forget how to take care of others.” – Jada Pinkett Smith “A woman is like a tea bag — you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” – Eleanor Roosevelt “As I see it, every day you do one of two things: build health or produce disease in yourself.” – Adelle Davis I hope you enjoy this issue.

RIGHT FIT Every Woman Deserves The

hen shopping for a new bra or bikini, finding the right fit that also matches your style, personality, and beauty is important. There are big-box lingerie and department stores all over Denton County, each claiming that they have just the right amount of variety to match any woman’s needs. But it’s not often that they deliver on that promise. A new specialty lingerie boutique in The Shops at Highland Village called La Myrrah promises to buck that trend, offering the luxury and style every goddess deserves and at prices that simply can’t be beaten. “We want to give every woman exactly what she is looking for, whether it be fit, comfort, or style, in an atmosphere that is comfortable, exciting, and satisfying,” general manager and majority owner Maily Aljendra Garcia said. “Having seen what is out on the market today, there is a gap that needs to be filled. No one helps you. It’s not always the right fit, and there’s no attention to the client. Closing that gap just makes sense.” She added, “Most women go from store to store trying to find the bra they are looking for, and when they do, they spend a lot of money. You can come here, pay the right price, and get a better variety.” La Myrrah wants you to feel like this is “your lingerie store.” They believe every woman should look good in all situations, whether at work, home, at the beach, or out for a night on the town. And with that comes the importance of always ensuring the right fit! They offer Latin American designed lingerie lines, including bras, shapewear, swimwear, and jewelry in a wide array of sizes and styles paired with excellent customer service. “Our slogan is ‘The Real Fit’ because seven out of 10 women in American don’t find the right bra for them. We offer beautiful bras and bikinis that are luxurious and can compete with anything on the market in terms of material, size, style, color, and variety,” Garcia said. “A woman deserves to feel like a goddess. It matters that she looks good everywhere.”

SIGNS OF A
STROKE You Need To Recognize by Steve Gamel
T
here are so many health conditions and risks to be mindful of as we age, and it’s safe to say some of the bigger ones affect men and women differently. Women, in particular, are affected by everything from menopause to breast cancer, heart disease, mental health, and osteoarthritis.
14 | LANTANA LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2021
www.LiveLocalMagazines.com
And believe it or not, you can add strokes to that list.
A stroke occurs when blood supply is
suddenly cut off from the brain. Think of it
as a brain attack; it can happen at any time and is considered a medical emergency because the brain cells are being deprived of oxygen.
While heart.org states that someone dies of a stroke every 3.70 minutes (about
389.4 stroke deaths each day), stroke.org points out that strokes kill more women than men each year. In fact, one in five
women will have a stroke, and some of the gender-specific reasons for the increased risks are likely due to:
• Shifting estrogen levels • Pregnancy • Preeclampsia • Birth control pills • Hormone replacement therapy www.LiveLocalMagazines.com
• Frequent migraines • Atrial fibrillation • Having a thick waist, particularly if post-menopausal With statistics like that, it’s important that we know what a stroke is and be able to act quickly when we recognize the warning signs. Immediate help is necessary to reduce the effects and avoid long-term complications. Beyond these symptoms, additional risk factors — for women and men — include being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, heavy or binge drinking, and using illicit drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamines. Medical risk factors include diabetes, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease, among others. Your friends at Murray Media Group want to remind you the best way to maintain overall health is to live a healthier lifestyle. Also, be aware of what your body is trying
to tell you and always consult with your physician. This month’s issue features several more articles on women’s health, so be sure to check them out. To the right are common warning signs and symptoms of a stroke, many of which are specific only to women:

SLURRED SPEECH AND TROUBLE SEEING A telltale sign that someone is having a stroke is when they slur their speech, cannot speak a simple sentence, and have difficulty seeing out of one or both eyes.
COMMON WARNING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE
NUMBNESS OR WEAKNESS What most people experience is paralysis on one side of the body, on the face, or on an arm or leg. Some people experience pain or the sensation of pins and needles. DIZZINESS, NAUSEA, AND VOMITING These symptoms may be minor or appear to masquerade as vertigo, but they should not be ignored. This is especially true if you are experiencing additional symptoms. SEVERE HEADACHES Headaches are a common condition, but if one suddenly pops up without warning and is debilitating in comparison with the run-of-themill headache, you should seek immediate medical attention. SHORTNESS OF BREATH AND DISORIENTATION Many women struggle to breathe properly and may even hallucinate or show signs of confusion and disorientation with their surroundings. Some may even faint.

Beauty A Full Spectrum Of

f you’re looking for a massage, airbrush tan, or a glam makeup application, Highland Village’s Studio 360 Med Spa and their Day Spa is the place for you. But if you’re interested in vitamin therapy, anti-aging treatments, or hormone replacement therapy, well, Studio 360 Med Spa is still the place for you!
A full-service beauty and wellness center under one roof, Studio 360 Med Spa is your one-stop answer to looking and feeling your best. Since its opening in November of 2018, world-renowned Dr. John Dulemba has overseen the medical side of Studio 360 as their medical director. A board-certified doctor of gynecology, he has been in private practice serving Denton residents since 1986 and now specializes in endometriosis. “This facility is so much more than a place for your superficial well-being,” Dr. Dulemba stated with conviction.
Since so many of their treatments are medical-based, in addition to Dr. Dulemba’s medical contributions, Studio 360 also staffs a registered nurse, advanced practice nurse, estheticians, and laser techs. If you’re interested in a more cosmetic approach to outer beauty, Studio 360 has an abundant menu of options, such as CoolSculpting, EMSCULPT, Botox, and cellulite reduction. But your inner self should receive the same level of personal attention, possibly starting with hormonal wellness.
“Even before menopause, some women are deficient in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone,” Dr. Dulemba explained. “During menopause, 80 percent of women experience the need for hormone replacement. It varies with each individual, but hormonal imbalance is common, and can affect your daily life.” 360 Med Spa offers BioTE hormone therapy using bioidentical pellets, helping to increase vitality and decrease anxiety, enhance your mood, and even boost your libido. “We also offer customized IV infusion therapy to deliver nutrients directly into your bloodstream,” Dr. Dulemba mentioned. “And vitamin B12 injections for increased energy and to maintain healthy functioning of your nervous system and the brain.” “Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), known as the O-Shot, is a non-surgical procedure to treat sexual disfunction, rejuvenate sexual satisfaction, and it even helps with urinary incontinence,” Dr. Dulemba claimed. For men, there’s the P-Shot. Another offering on their treatment menu is the DiVa laser treatment for vaginal rejuvenation. And there’s BTL Emsella, a breakthrough treatment for incontinence. “I’m here for anyone who wants to talk about our procedures, or for any other medical issues they want to discuss,” Dr. Dulemba promised. “I don’t just answer their questions, I explain the whys and wherefores and even use the computer to illustrate. If I don’t educate them, I’m not a doctor – I’m a technician.” Studio 360 Med Spa treats the full 360 spectrum of both beauty and wellness. With so many options, you’ll become the best you can be – inside and out. 972.318.3600 | Studio360MedSpa.com 2300 Highland Village Rd., Bldg. 3, Ste. 300 Highland Village, TX 75077

any people insist some of the best deals on the planet are made on the golf course. There’s a certain ring of truth to the statement since golf is frequently the game of choice for influential politicians, attorneys, business moguls, doctors, and other movers and shakers. Little effort is required to buy into the “golf course deals” theory, but what about golf as a teacher for the more profound aspects of life? Golf as a character builder? Golf as a moral benchmark? Some of those may sound a bit far-fetched until you speak with 16-year-old Miriam (Mia) Salloum and her father, Eyad, a realtor with Weichert Classic. Mia’s voice is youthful and extremely pleasant, but her vocabulary and overall articulation sings with the poise,
confidence, assurance, and understanding of someone much older. She is delightful. Father and daughter attribute those positive characteristics to Mia’s participation in a program called First Tee, which Mia joined at age nine. For the multitudes who are unfamiliar with First Tee, it’s an international youth development program introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people. It’s available after school and in-school, depending on the chapter
location. The focus is on shaping the lives of young people from all walks of life through the reinforcement of life values such as integrity, respect, and perseverance. It does all that through the game of golf? Yes. It uses golf to teach youngsters what it means to be a person of character and integrity. “I found out about the program when Mia told me she wanted golf lessons when she was nine,” Eyad said. “I didn’t play, and I knew nothing about lessons for kids. I did what anyone else would do and went to Google to search. I found First Tee and, luckily, they were having a nearby open house. We went, and Mia absolutely loved everything about it.” For $10 per week, Mia became a member. Financial aid is available if needed. “I was only nine,” Mia said, “and, at that age, it’s not easy to identify all the things I was learning. I think it sinks in as you grow older. And then, one day, you realize you truly understand values such as honesty, integrity, responsibility, and much more. “The program has given me so many opportunities to grow and to learn. It’s allowed me to develop values that, under ordinary circumstances, I wouldn’t have been able to put names to until I was much older.” That’s cool. Like what, specifically? “Core values,” Mia answered. “Academic honesty. The responsibility of thinking about my future, of setting goals and a timeline to achieve them. It’s no different from setting a tee time on a date and at a time that I know I have free, and then being there when I’m supposed to. That’s all my responsibility. “Golf is not a team sport. You may play as a group but not as a team. That means you must develop self-reliance and confidence.” Mia traveled to Pennsylvania last month as one of two Texas youth chosen to

“There was golf but there were also some wonderful discussions. We talked about
racism and privileged wealth, as examples. The topics were things we’d never discuss in school. It was an incredible learning experience.
“One of the things difficult to verbalize is
the sense of connectedness between all of us. We come from this awesome, mutual
exposure of developing core values, and it
gives us a sense of comfortable pride. It’s a little hard to express.”

everyone’s character. Therefore, First Tee

down to adding five yards (or less) to each drive.
Conflict resolution between

There are approximately 150 First Tee chapters and, in
2019, 120,000 kids passed

By anyone’s standards, that’s a lot of bang for 10-bucks.

amphitheatre in the world. Construction began in 70 AD, and was completed in
80 AD by Jewish slaves. The Colosseum could hold between 50,000 and 80,000
spectators. This entertainment venue was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.
Here are my top five favorites:

o be successful, you have to have your heart in your business and your business in your heart.” This quote sums up the thriving story of Nancy Pieper, who ranks in the top 1% of all DFW realtors. A realtor for nearly a decade, Nancy’s professional journey is an amalgamation of passion and patience.
“If you ask me about the top qualities a realtor needs to have, patience is one of the biggest,” she said. “Also the ability to manage the ups and downs, which are like a roller coaster all day every day.” The real estate market, like everything else, has a new normal for both buyers and sellers. On the buying side, a realtor probably writes three to five offers for each client to try to nail down a property. On the listing side, they try to navigate through multiple offers to assist their clients in selecting the request that has the best potential of getting closed. From the way offers are structured to the way sellers’ expectations are addressed, the seasoned agent understands how to pivot with the changes. Nancy goes to extra lengths to 32 | LANTANA LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2021

ensure her clients get the best advice to prepare a solid plan.” Nancy is enjoying her dream job – the union of her design skills and her business acumen. “This will be the last job I’ll ever have, and I don’t anticipate ever stopping,” Nancy said with a wink. Known not only for her warm personality, tough negotiating, and relentless work ethic, her clients always come back. Testimonials prove why she’s on the top:
Although a real estate agent’s career is richly rewarding, the amount of
hard work and dedication it demands is unquestionable.
“The biggest myth about real estate is that it’s an easy job. There’s a lot of
emotions involved on all sides of the
transaction, as we are dealing with what usually is a family’s largest financial asset,” Nancy shared.
She can’t think of a trip or a vacation
where she wasn’t working. Whether it’s maneuvering through a transaction,

staying updated with the market, or
dealing with everything in between, she is motivated to work every day.
“My happy place is to walk in every day
to a home that I love. I want my clients to experience that same feeling every time they walk into their home,” she shared. Nancy stages her clients’ homes as
part of her service. She uses items from
her “Decor Depot,” as she calls it, and uses the client’s existing items. No matter what
the market is, updated and staged always sells faster and for more money.
She is also a proud member of Coldwell Banker Apex, Realtors®, the largest woman-owned Coldwell Banker in the U.S. “The level of support, training, and encouragement we receive sets them apart by leaps and bounds. Coldwell Banker Apex is without equal,” she commented. SEPTEMBER 2021 | LANTANA LIVING | 33
With a loud and clear motto of ‘take care of others, and they will take care of you,’ the Lantana-based realtor believes that
a realtor’s success lies in clients’ trust, for them to feel they are a priority, and to know you have their back.
“I love knowing that they trust me, that
they keep in touch with me and support me in my business through referrals.” Nancy moved to Lantana almost two
years ago from Flower Mound, where
she raised her family for 30 years. She
has made it a priority to get to know and be a part of this beautiful community.
With over 400 homes sold last year alone, Lantana residents often move within the
community itself. That’s special, and luckily there are some great realtors in this very neighborhood – who knows Lantana better than someone who lives IN Lantana?
Feeling a responsibility to give back to the community, Nancy has started working
with and volunteering at Denton County Friends of the Family. This organization supports families affected by domestic
violence. According to reports, there were 212,885 victims of family violence in 2018 in Texas. And domestic homicides have
more than doubled since the pandemic. Nancy started a neighborhood Home
Decor swap that resulted in three SUVs
full of donations to staging and decorating
their transitional housing. Neighbors gathered to swap items, but the lion’s share ended up donating to the charity. If you are interested in being a part of this fun and growing initiative, follow Nancy on Facebook (Nancy Pieper Real Estate), where she posts all event announcements. The next event will be in October to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month. At the end of the day, what Nancy takes to heart is: “It’s not about the income, but the outcome.”

ate in the night of Jan. 10, 2005, something happened to Jonathan Godfrey that he will never forget. Godfrey, a medical flight nurse, was lying eight feet below the surface of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., after the LifeEvac 2 medical helicopter in which he was riding crashed. It took first responders 45 minutes before they knew what happened. And while Godfrey was rescued, pilot Joe Schaffer and paramedic Nikki Kielar died.
As one of an estimated 700 survivors of air medical crashes and among the few sole survivors, Godfrey immediately knew he needed to tell the world what he went through. Within 30 days, he created his first PowerPoint and visited an air medical base. He toured the country for the next decade, giving his Max Impact: A Story of Survival presentation to whoever would listen. Then in 2015, a fellow helicopter crash survivor named Michael Eccard connected him with MJ Brickey, a then-Oklahoma newspaper reporter investigating five fatal helicopter crashes in that state in five years. They ended up co-writing a 2017 book named the same as his presentation and two years later got married. They recently relocated to Lantana to be near family and further his cause. The self-published book has sold more than 15,000 copies and will eventually lead to an updated edition after leaving out key elements. Godfrey and Brickey also are in pre-production negotiations for his story to become a movie. Everything they do is intended to honor the memory of Schaffer and Kielar. “There’s nothing good about it, but if someone is going to die, you want it to count,” Brickey said. “He could have made money off their tragedy, but he didn’t, and he’s held onto that. That’s why the movie isn’t out already, as we have tried to carefully carry this information as far as we can go.” While the physical scars of 11 broken bones eventually healed, the mental ones lingered for years. A combination of PTSD and 36 | LANTANA LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2021

survivor’s guilt (Kielar switched seats with
Godfrey before departing after dropping off
their patient at an area hospital), plus a divorce played havoc with his mind.
“I needed to get my head back on straight,” he
said, recalling the professional help he received. His story has helped change the medivac
transportation industry forever. Godfrey said the design of medical helicopters and prevention and seat belt equipment have improved
substantially. The crash helped change safety and survivability equipment, including night-
vision goggles and altimeters, and played a role in all commercial aircraft featuring two pieces of equipment to track them from start to finish.
Still, Godfrey wanted to do more. In 2020, he launched By the Bay LLC, a company with the goal to open 10 nationwide substance abuse and mental health recovery and renewal centers. With nearly all of Godfrey’s family – including oldest daughter and Dallas resident, Hannah – living in his native Texas, and Brickey still with family in southeast Oklahoma, they decided to move to the Metroplex and launch their first center early next year in Aurora just west of Roanoke. Their Brady Bunch-like blended family also includes his children Noah and Logan in Ohio and her four children, including three who live with them in Lantana. Last year, Godfrey left a job as a critical-care transport nurse and safety coordinator at

important for women’s physical wellbeing, why it’s so important as you age, how it
helps you stay lean and healthy, and how it increases weight loss. We believe that
weight lifting is a key component of every woman’s weight loss.
Losing muscle mass is one of the main
reasons women gain weight as they age Unless you do something to combat it,
most women naturally gain weight as they age. Everyone loses muscle mass as they
get older, beginning in their 30s. Since muscle burns calories so efficiently, this loss of muscle slows down your metabolism. And because women start out with less muscle mass than men, this slowed down metabolism causes weight gain more readily. The average female gains around 20 to 25 pounds of fat between the ages of 20 and 50. And unfortunately, it gets worse as you get older. After middle age, the average adult loses 3% of their muscle mass every year. But there’s something you can do!
fat lost to up to 85%.
In other words, when cardio is the only
part of your workout routine, you’re going your routine helps you gain muscle and lose more fat.
In one study at Tufts University, 10
overweight women were put on the same diet. Half of them lifted heavy
weights at the same time. At the end of the study, both groups had lost around
13 pounds. But while the diet-only group lost 9.2 pounds of fat, the group who
added weight lifting lost 14.6 pounds
of fat and gained 1.4 pounds of muscle.
This same 13-pound weight loss resulted in a much trimmer body for the weight lifting group.
The beauty of weight lifting is that as you lose fat and gain muscle, you typically
lose inches from your waistline even if you don’t see a change on the scale.
Muscle mass supports increased and long-lasting weight loss
Muscles are metabolically efficient and promote weight loss by burning more
calories—even at rest. When you increase muscle, you increase your metabolism.

your workout, your body continues to burn calories.
Weight lifting helps women slim down as they trade fat for lean muscle
Despite an old misconception, weight lifting will not bulk up women. Even
though women will build muscle lifting weights, becoming bulky is difficult.
Women have lower levels of muscle building hormones, called anabolic
hormones. This makes it much more
difficult for women to build muscle mass. Not only do you not need to worry about
bulking up from weights, but women who participate in weight training actually become smaller and look leaner.

t’s okay to admit it, ladies. We’ve all dreamed of looking at a special someone from beneath a fringe of long, luxurious lashes. Well, wake up! Today it’s possible through the expert skills and technologies at The Lash Lounge which, by the way, was voted the Best of Denton County for the fourth consecutive year. The franchise was established in 2006. Yvonne Hemphill, former VP of Operations for The Lash Lounge corporate office, and husband, Terrell, purchased a The Lash Lounge franchise in 2017. They opened January 30th in the Robertson’s
Creek Shopping Center in Flower Mound. Previously, there was a The Lash Lounge location in Highland Village, but its owners retired a year earlier, leaving the salon closed and the customer base scattered.
Business Spotlight The Hemphills’ Lash Lounge has distinguished itself as the flagship for the chain’s other 10 DFW salons, set apart from similar facilities by its total customization for each individual client. “The Lash Lounge was the very first salon to focus on lash extensions,” Yvonne said. “We took that focus forward another huge step when we began customizing extensions for each individual client who walked through our doors. One of the greatest benefits of customization is it allows us to preserve the integrity of the natural lashes. “Appointments begin with consultations, educating customers in what is healthy and sustainable for their natural lashes. For example, extremely thick, long extensions cannot be supported by fine, thin lashes. It’s like hanging a heavy ornament on the very end of a Christmas tree branch. All our technicians are trained to analyze natural lashes, to determine thickness, length, and the resulting weight ratio. This is not a one-size-fitsall application.” There are three lash extension applications. “The Classic has one extension on each lash,” she said. “If you have 20 natural lashes, you will have 20 longer lashes when we’re finished. The Volume uses a fan of lashes, as many as seven, on each lash. We make our own fans. Going back to that 20-natural lash example, if we apply five-lash extensions/fans to each of those 20, you would have 100 lashes per eye when done. The third style is Hybrid, which is a mix of the first two.” The expert technology and application during the two to 2 and one-half hour process is amazing. “It’s also tremendously rewarding when you watch a client look in a mirror and her face lights up when she sees her eyes. She’s ready for anything!” Yvonne said.

HOW’S YOUR
PATIO LIFE... W
by PJ Kratohvil, Owner of Complete Solutions
hen people call in looking to create an outdoor space, we ask them what they envision or are looking for in the new space. Some will already have plans and know exactly what they want. Others have no idea. The next question a lot of times will be, “What do you like and dislike about your current space?” This will often give the clueless client a chance not to be overwhelmed by the possibilities and allows them to focus on specifics based on what they already have.
Don’t let the details overwhelm and keep you from moving forward. Sometimes, calling to consult with a designer or seeking out a company that specializes in the design aspect as well as the construction of the project is the best option. Your patio space should be an extension of the house – furnished and functional. More than anything, it should be a space that’s designed to fit your needs. This allows you to effortlessly get out and enjoy the outdoors. Having a cover over your space really allows for more usable time throughout the year no matter the weather conditions and gives you the opportunity to truly make it feel as if it’s just another room in the home. Sometimes a good balance of covered as well as uncovered patio space is the answer – just ensure you’re investing in a vision that’s going to fit your family’s needs the best.
Having the ability and an adequate
amount of counter space to grill during the week or entertain on the weekends can greatly enhance your outdoor
experience. Putting in a side burner,
extra storage, or even a fridge can add
to the usability and convenience of the
space. You don’t have to go huge, super luxurious, or over the top with it – just build to suit your needs, and, most
importantly, make it functional for you. With our economy continuing to boom
and seeing no end in sight for the growing construction industry, creating privacy
is and should be at the top of our lists.
Whether it be some taller landscape that
creates a screen wall, a simple curtain and
rod set up that you can pull back-and-forth as needed, or remote solar screens that
offer UV as well as bug control, creating
that element of privacy and really finishing the space off can make all the difference when your home and trying to unplug.
Fireplaces, fountains, fire pits, and other features won’t only set your space apart from others but will also provide some
function to your outdoor living. Whether
it’s that focal point that a fireplace offers, a relaxing sound you get off of a water feature or fountain, or being able to
gather around the fire pit on a cool night. Adding features to your patio space not
only creates interesting destinations but
also brings people together enabling you to enjoy the space that much more.
Once you’ve gotten your patio footprint
together, it’s always important to balance
your hard space with a combination of turf and landscape areas. Much like the patio
itself, landscaping could definitely be a do
it yourself task. But sometimes, design and installation are better left to be thought through by a local professional. We get calls and visit homes on a daily basis
where people have put together a space only to find out it’s not large enough. It
doesn’t offer the function or privacy they had envisioned, or better yet, they have
given their ideas to a “patio builder” who doesn’t necessarily specialize in layout
and design. Now, they need to manipulate what they’ve already paid for into something more usable.

THE NAME OF THE
AMERICAN GAME by Diane Ciarloni | photos courtesy of Lauren Howard
T
here’s something magical about baseball. What else could make hotdogs taste so sublimely delicious? What else could make a stinging, back-of-the-neck sunburn feel so good? And what else, according to Ryan Howard, head coach for the Coppell Cowboys, can turn boys into the best husbands, fathers, workers, employers, politicians, teachers, etc. of the future? Howard is a local baseball kid. His uncle, Fred Howard, was a coach, and that sat well with Ryan, who loved the game. “I wanted to play competitively for as long as I could,” the Lantana resident confessed. “I played through college, followed by a year of independent ball. That was about the time I looked in the mirror and admitted I wasn’t good enough to go on. “Just because I recognized I wasn’t good enough for pro ball didn’t mean I wanted to let go of everything. I wanted to stay involved with the sport and, in some way, remain competitive. I’ve always loved kids, so the next natural step pointed to coaching.” Howard’s family was steeped in baseball. He grew up watching different coaches, including his earlier mentioned Uncle Fred. He packed his duffel bag and headed out to frequent baseball camps, where he coached from a young age. Even though he was unaware of the actual construction process, Howard’s baseball experiences were building his character into one of those future husbands, fathers, teachers. “I developed my coaching philosophy early,” Howard continued. “For instance, I prefer to think of us as having standards rather than rules. I sincerely believe young people

“I SINCERELY BELIEVE YOUNG PEOPLE WILL MEET ANY STANDARD YOU SET IF THEY’RE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.” will meet any standard you set if they’re held accountable. “I want them to realize there’s no shortcut to success, and success is the vehicle I want them to use to have fun. Getting there requires developing mental toughness, which is the only way to perform at the best level on any given day.” Coppell is known for its talented athletes, ranking in the top tier for the past 30 years. There are two main reasons for the success. First, superior coaching is provided from a very young age and, second, both the city

and the schools promote the athletic programs. Coppell knew what it was doing when the Cowboys hired Ryan Howard. He was an all-district player at Carrollton Newman Smith. He coached at three colleges in five years – Paris Junior College, Tarleton State, and North Carolina State. Howard learned at each stop, adding new elements to his coaching philosophy and pushing and molding it into a more solid and more easily teachable definition. Howard signed on as head coach for the Lake Dallas Falcons in 2016, leading the team to the postseason twice. It was in 2019 when Howard guided them to one of the best turnaround stories in Texas baseball. They were 11–15 and hanging their heads over a five-game losing streak. Howard coached their minds relentlessly, telling them success could come only with a mental shift.
standards, expectations, and philosophies for both parents and players, breaking down the latter into offense, defense, and pitching. “Consistent communication is high on my list,” Howard said. “It’s also important for me to know the parents because that’s the only way to know where, what these guys came from. There are certain things I believe in very strongly. I believe in building the champions before the championship, and in building the man before the athlete. “My number one priority is a complete person, socially, athletically, and academically. The ultimate goal is having my work [coaching], judged when these guys are in their 30s and 40s as husbands,

Assuming college graduation happens around age 22 or 23, that leaves a lot of years for the men coach Howard builds to stand tall as husbands, fathers, and allaround leaders.

WICKED BOLD VEGAN KITCHEN
t's all about family at Flower Mound's newest vegan establishment, Wicked BOLD Vegan Kitchen. Owners Deric and Brooklynn Cahill named the restaurant after their family members - Brooklynn, Ophelia, Landon, & Deric. And they began their vegan journey after they learned their daughter couldn't eat animal products like cheese and eggs.
Back in Florida, they started out with making vegan chocolate out of their apartment. And when they moved here to DFW, they decided to expand their chocolate business and also open up a vegan restaurant where they can share some of their favorite vegan products and recipes with the community.

We were able to sample quite a few things from their kitchen menu, including:
cheese topped with lettuce, onions,
with three types of guacamole —
including a chocolate guacamole. Yes, you read that right. And yes, it is surprisingly delicious!
We also tried their popular Italian
Sandwich made with vegan pastrami, capicola, pepperoni, and American
tomatoes, and spices. You'll be surprised how much this tastes like a meat-lover’s Italian sandwich!
We also got to sample one of their new
bowls - the Texasmexus made with black
In addition to being a vegan kitchen, Wicked BOLD is also a sober bar, getting creative mixing up cocktails without the alcohol. Some of the mocktails you can try at their bar include a Smoked Rosemary Palo, a Cucumber Fizz, and a Chocolate Whiskey. It was fun to see so many people coming in to experience Wicked BOLD for the first time while we were there, and we can't wait to see their continued success here in our community. So, whether you are an experienced vegan or you're just curious what eating vegan looks like, we'd love for you to head to Wicked BOLD soon to meet Brooklynn and Deric and their family. Our moods were instantly lifted by walking into their restaurant and talking with them, and we know that yours will be too!

ORAL WOMEN’S WELLNESS
&
HEALTH
S
by Dr. Matt Artho, Owner of Country Lakes Family Dental
taying fit and healthy is often viewed as trendy. And although each generation has produced varying approaches to wellness, there is no doubt that a focus on health is a consistent part of our culture. However, staying healthy can become an individual fad when you find yourself one day up and ready for the gym and other days face down, usually in a bowl of ramen noodles. The truth is the same for dental health, and in this women’s wellness issue, it is important to keep in mind the importance of consistent dental and oral health care — especially for women. According to the National Women’s Health Network (NWHN), many women go without necessary dental care because of challenging barriers “connected to and made worse by other access challenges, such as finding transportation, taking time off work, and arranging childcare.” It is not uncommon that many wives and mothers delay their own dental care to ensure their families receive dental care first. This often results in the necessity of major dental restorative work that could be prevented prior to the neglect. Though the sentiment is noble, all family members deserve to receive proper dental care to avoid dental catastrophes.
Women also face certain unique dental concerns. Again, according to NWHN, fluctuating hormone levels during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause, as well as from oral contraceptive use, can lead to severe gum disease. Pregnancy also presents unique dental concerns as poor diet or morning sickness that can result in acid reflux and can cause damage to the teeth. Receiving dental care while pregnant should also be a team effort between the dentist and obstetrician to ensure the safety of the mother and baby while considering comfort level, medications, and radiographs. Keeping these concerns in

So, remember, as you focus on your overall health and wellness, do not overlook the value of dental and oral health by keeping your trainer close and your dentist closer! Happy smiling!

hen we think about luxury items, we think about fast cars, diamonds, name brand clothing, or even expensive bags. One thing that most likely doesn’t come to mind are feminine hygiene products. Most people would consider those products a necessity. But many women around the world know that that’s not the case. Non-profit organization, She Supply, has made it their mission to eliminate period poverty for women once and for all. The idea of She Supply began in August of 2016. Chairwoman of She Supply, Kathy Meyer, went on a youth choir mission trip and was introduced to the issue of period poverty. Seeing that this was an issue, Kathy got a group of women together for lunch where they discussed the notion of creating an organization to help women who were suffering from this injustice. In September of 2016, the group applied to be a non-profit organization. It was here that She Supply truly began to make a change in our society. “It started with women bringing items such as pads, tampons, and panty liners to group functions,” Vice Chairwoman, Dr. Lisa Pierce Johnson said. “Period poverty is effecting hundreds if not thousands of women in Denton County,” Lisa said. “We have 161,000 women in Denton County that live below the poverty line. The most shocking part of this is that feminine hygiene products are included as a luxury tax item. This means that women who live below the poverty line can’t use their Lonestar cards or government funds to purchase their feminine hygiene necessities, such as pads and tampons.
“Women are having to choose between food for their children and their need for feminine hygiene products.”

“Women are having to choose between food for their children and their need for feminine hygiene products,” Lisa said. What started as a small organization has quickly grown into something bigger than they ever imagined. “We started with three partner agencies, Pedi Place, Friends of the Family, and Salvation Army,” Lisa said. The foundation began with packing parties, where the women would take 10 feminine hygiene products and package them into little baggies and then deliver them to the partner agencies. “In the last four years She Supply has grown beyond belief. We now work with 15 partner agencies,” Lisa said.
still deliver small packaging to the
Salvation Army because that is what that partnering agency needs for the area.
“This year we’ve already exceeded our number of donations from last year,” Lisa said.
As of the end of July, She Supply had delivered 228,705 packages to their partnering agencies.
“People are blown away when we tell
them that feminine hygiene products are considered a luxury,” Lisa said.
The luxury tax was started during the
war and was intended to create funds for the militia. What started out as
helpful has now lost its usefulness. “No one believes that these products are a luxury,” Lisa said.
Period poverty is something that affects 1 in 4 women. And yet,
tampons and pads are some of the
least commonly donated items to homeless shelters and food banks. “No one wants to show up to a job interview and have a fear that they’ll have an accident,” Lisa said. “Having the resources to be able to receive feminine products creates a sense of decency and greatly impacts a woman’s confidence. We’re empowering women. We’re sisters lifting each other up.” She Supply has gone above and beyond to create feminine hygiene equality for the women of Denton County but also our surrounding areas. What started out as a small group of women wanting to meet a need has turned into an organization that is changing the lives of our locally deprived women. She Supply is opening the eyes of people everywhere that period poverty is a real thing and it’s time for a change.
With the growth of She Supply, the nonprofit organization now sees donations on

“This has been an amazing journey,” Lisa said. She Supply even saw success last year during the height of COVID-19. She Supply delivered 249,000 packages of bras, panties, and feminine hygiene products during COVID. “In the world of period poverty, we use a term called cycles funded. The amount of donations we delivered last year equaled to 45,000 cycles,” Lisa said.

lanning on staying in your home for years to come? Aging in Place can be done comfortably and with style. Staging your home becomes more of a necessity than a luxury as we age; staying in your home is a gift. Aging in place doesn’t mean life now demands grab bars and removal all of your throw rugs. But with the right floor plan and flow, it is doable.
Aging in place can include stylish elements as well as comfortable changes. While aging in place does refocus our priorities on wider doorways, clear pathways with fewer obstructions, good lighting and grab bars in wet zones, you can absolutely stage with beautiful design elements and style. So how do you mix in style while staying focused on all the aging in place considerations? Color is a fun way to add style. Color also provides contrast for depth perception. Color can be added in the form of paint or wallpaper. Embracing color will influence fabrics and additional textures to use, but it will also affect how we feel, your mood, and how furniture or art looks in your home. When you add pops of color, you will also want to incorporate those special pieces that are personal to make you feel comfortable in your home. Pops of color

Open floor plans are a hidden gem and will accommodate the aging in place lifestyle. An open family room that flows into the kitchen welcomes grandchildren’s visits…letting them romp around in a stylish and kid-friendly environment and it will be an easy room to make small adjustments to as the homeowner ages. It is easy to make hardwood floors into paths for swift navigation from room to room and as time passes accommodations can be made with little effort such as removing rugs.

DECLUTTERING IS KEY, NOT ONLY TO OUR MENTAL WELL BEING BUT ALSO IN ELIMINATING PHYSICAL HURDLES. Comfort height toilets are also something anyone can appreciate. It’s a long way down to a regular height toilet in the middle of the night. A higher toilet attributes to hygiene and mobility. Other considerations would be anti-slip tiles or slip resistant rugs outside of the wet zones. Then finally for those nasty, but necessary, grab bars. They have come a long way!! Stylish black bars are a thing now. There are a myriad of stylish options and colors that can be added to toilet and shower areas as needed. Cheers to your health and stylish stAging in Place.

What can parents do to help? Maintain open communication with your child. All children should have a safe place to discuss problems such as grief, bullying, or stress. In addition, make sure they are getting enough sleep, eating a well-balanced diet, and exercising regularly. Try to limit screen time (phone, tablet, video games, computer) to two hours per day, and make sure they are safely using social media. Finally, teach coping skills such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation to use during stressful times. Visit www.therapistaid.com for more tips on these relaxation techniques.

•
Psychologist. Licensed counselor with a graduate degree (master’s degree, PsyD, Ph.D.) in psychology who is trained to counsel in individual or group settings. They can also administer certain tests pertaining to learning disorders or psychological health.
•
Licensed Clinical Social Worker. A social worker with additional clinical training in counseling.
•
Licensed Counselor. Counselor with master’s degree in psychology with additional clinical training.
