How to

Natural Scientist T

in Your Baby/Toddler

by Erin Lundie M.Ed, Franchise Owner, Primrose School of Lantana

he early years of a child’s life are filled with a desire to explore and experiment with objects. Well-known developmental psychologist Jean Piaget fittingly called young children “natural scientists” because of this inclination. By tapping into children’s tendency to explore and discover, parents, teachers and other adults in children’s lives can help nurture and extend their learning.

Give your baby colorful, safe objects that he can examine by looking, feeling, tasting and smelling. Stimulate those senses! Talk to your baby, providing a play-byplay of everything she does. This commentary helps babies organize and understand what’s around them. This may feel awkward at first, but the benefits are worth it!

to keep a close eye on your little one to make sure he doesn’t try to eat any of it – some dried beans can be a choking hazard for children. Make “cloud dough” with flour and cooking oil (8 parts flour: 1 part oil). It feels powdery like flour one moment and then moldable like damp sand the next. It’s easy to make and the unique texture will amuse your child to no end.

Offering safe and supportive environments for little ones to explore helps them develop into well-rounded, creative learners. Create

opportunities for your child to experiment with new objects, textures, or other phenomena on a regular basis – the crib, playroom, bathtub and backyard are all excellent laboratories for young scientists! From the moment babies enter the world, their curiosity sparks a need to observe and classify objects and actions. Their brains actually change as a result of the new things they learn. As children continue to grow and explore, new discoveries help them enrich, modify, reorganize – and sometimes replace – their initial theories with quite different ideas. This type of hands-on learning explains why a child may scrutinize a new object in an effort to figure out how it works, or experiment with sound and movement as she learns how to use her body to communicate. Children need safe environments where they can experiment freely and take risks without the fear of being told, “That’s not how you’re supposed to do that.” When we support children’s natural tendency to try things out, we are cheering them on to discover and tackle new challenges creatively. This is an important step in helping them build determination and confidence in their own abilities. Adults can encourage infants and toddlers to explore and learn in simple and fun ways. Primrose recommends the following activities to bring out the natural scientist in young children:

Fill a large shallow bowl with water and provide your infant with simple scooping tools for endless exploration and fun. You can do this in the bathtub as well. Fill a large bowl tub with dry beans, rice or sand. Your child will enjoy sifting this material through his fingers, picking it up and pouring it out. Be sure MARCH 2016 | LANTANA LIVING | 11

T

by Susan Neuhalfen he Glenn Garcelon Foundation is hosting its fifth annual golf classic on April 3 at Tour 18 in Flower Mound. The foundation, started by Garcelon’s widow and children, benefits brain tumor patients.

Teams and individuals are invited to join the 4-Person Scramble. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The event will include a complimentary lunch provided by McAllister’s Deli, wine and cheese on the course and a fun-filled dinner with raffle items, great door prizes and a wine pull. Even if you don’t play golf, you are welcome to join the dinner. Glenn Garcelon will always be remembered by friends and family for his commitment to helping others. A friend, neighbor, volunteer, and well-respected co-worker to many, Glenn always put people first. When Glenn died due to complications from a brain tumor in 2008, it was no surprise that his family wanted to pay forward the lessons of love, warmth, support and compassion that they

of Lantana.

“We have a real issue in Bandera,” he told

the Fresh Water Supply District 7 at a recent

Lantana Community Association’s Board of Directors by Susan Neuhalfen

Lantana resident Jim Bridges was elected on March 1 to serve a three year term.

“Up until now, all of the members of the board have been appointed by the developers,” explained Mark Norton, Community Manager. “We’ve always had a resident on the board, the person simply wasn’t elected, he or she was appointed.”

I help people to protect their home and property every day,” said Bridges. “Now I’ll be serving to protect our community.

26 | LANTANA LIVING | MARCH 2016

A resident of Lantana since 2011, Bridges was one of 14 residents vying for the open seat. The first vote held at the annual meeting on February 23 was short the required number of homeowners to constitute a quorum, so a second meeting was held at which time enough votes were cast to elect Bridges. “I’m very honored to be selected,” smiled Bridges. “I’m also excited for the opportunity to bring in more residents who care about the community.” Prior to being elected, Bridges served with two other members on a resident advisory committee which worked closely with the board. Bridges said he was hoping that one of the three would be elected in order or keep the continuity together that they’d spent a long time building. Bridges, who owns a State Farm Agency in the Bartonville Town Center, feels

that serving on the board is just an extension of what he does every day. In addition to working on the resident advisory committee, Bridges has also served as the Safety Commissioner for the Lantana Water District for the past three years.

THE FACTS ABOUT

Child I

CAR SEAT SAFETY

get many questions in my daily practice regarding the best way to keep children safe when riding in the vehicle. The laws and recommendations can be very confusing and, at times, contradictory. I have attached and modified some common graphics and charts in attempt to simply the recommendations and guidelines. Please make sure that the types of seats you use meet your children’s specific needs.

TYPES OF CAR SEATS AT A GLANCE Note: This chart is a quick guide on where to start your search. It’s important to continue reading more about the features and how to use your car seat. Additional safety tips are at the end of this article.

QUESTIONS/ANSWERS Reference: www.healthychildren.org

What if my baby’s feet touch the back of the vehicle seat? Your child can bend his legs easily and will be comfortable in a rear-facing seat. Injuries to the legs are rare for children facing the rear.

What do I do if my baby slouches down or to the side in his car seat?

Blanket rolls may be placed on both sides of the infant and a small diaper or blanket between the crotch strap and the infant. Do not place padding under or behind the infant or use any sort of car seat insert unless it came with the seat or was made by the manufacturer of the seat.

Infants/Toddlers

Toddlers/Preschoolers

School-Aged Children

Older Children

Why should I dress my baby in thinner layers of clothing before strapping her into a car seat?

Bulky clothing, including winter coats and snowsuits, can compress in a crash and lead to increased risk of injury. Ideally, dress your baby in thinner layers and tuck a coat or a blanket around your baby over the buckled harness straps if needed.

Do preemies need a special car seat?

Convertible seats and forwardfacing seats with harnesses

ll infants and A toddlers should ride in a Rear-Facing Car Seat until they are at least 2 years of age, or until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat’s manufacturer.

Any child who has outgrown the rearfacing weight or height limit for their convertible car seat should use a ForwardFacing Car Seat with a harness for as long as possible, up to the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat manufacturer.

(Texas Law states they must remain in rear facing until 20lbs AND 1 year of age)

Booster Seats

Seat Belts

ll children whose A weight or height is above the forwardfacing limit for their car seat should use a Belt-Positioning Booster Seat until the vehicle seat belt fits properly, typically when they have reached 4 feet 9 inches in height and are between 8 and 12 years of age.

W hen children are old enough and large enough for the vehicle seat belt to fit them correctly, they should always use Lap and Shoulder Seat Belts for optimal protection. All children younger than 13 years should be restrained in the rear seats of vehicles for optimal protection.

When can my child stop using a booster?

Do not stop using a booster seat unless you can answer “yes” to ALL of the questions listed here – no matter how tall, how heavy, or how old he or she is! Make sure to perform the 5-Step Test for every vehicle that your child rides in. They may pass in some cars but not others. Many children will not be able to pass this test until age 10-12 despite the fact that Texas law allows them to ride without a booster at age 8.

Rear-facing only seats and rear-facing convertible seats

The car seat should be approved for the baby’s weight. Very small babies who can sit safely in a semi reclined position usually fit better in rearfacing only seats. Premature infants should be tested while still in the hospital to make sure they can sit safely in a semi reclined position. Babies who need to lie flat during travel should ride in a crash-tested car bed.

hanging lives one smile at a time is the ultimate goal at Titensor Dental. From starting the nation’s first third party dental warranty program to being trained in all aspects of dentistry by some of dentistry’s leading experts, Titensor Dental is always looking to achieve the highest standard of dental care for their patients and their community.

To continue with their pledge to have their patients’ best interests in mind, Steven Titensor DDS, PA, founded the first third party dental warranty program that not only offers peace of mind for their patients, but is quickly doing the same for others as the program sweeps across the nation. The idea to explore warranty programs started when one of Dr. Steven Titensor’s patients fell while at the movies. He had recently gone to Titensor Dental to get cosmetic work completed including several veneers, a layer of material placed over a tooth either to improve the aesthetics of the tooth or to protect the tooth’s surface from damage. As luck would have it, the patient’s fall did not result in any damage, but according to Dr. Steven Titensor, it got them thinking about what would have happened if he needed repair work. Was there a warranty? How did it all work? After some brainstorming, the nation’s first 3rd party dental warranty program began. (www.MyDentalWarranty.com) “The way dentistry has always been done is so ambiguous on dental procedures - if the patient’s dental work is covered or not,” Dr. Steven Titensor said. “The patient doesn’t know and the dentist doesn’t know. Nothing is usually ever written down. This warranty is a no-brainer and every dentist in the nation should be offering this to their patients.” In Dr. Steven Titensor’s eyes, dentists have three choices. They can not warranty their work, self-warranty their work, or use a third party. Using a third party was the most logical. What is great about a third party Dental Warranty is that the warranty follows the patient wherever they go. So if they move or if their dentist retires, changes or moves, the coverage remains in place. It is clear, everyone is on the same page, and it is in writing. Plus, it is a no-fault coverage! This offers patients and doctors the peace of mind they deserve. Because of Dr. Steven Titensor’s desire to develop this warranty for his patients, dentists around the nation can now benefit by offering their

emember when you first learned about the concept of magnetism? If your experience was like mine, you ran an experiment using iron filings dumped onto a flat surface. They lay there in a random, haphazard fashion – until you wielded a magnet! All of a sudden the invisible force of magnetism took control of those iron filings, arranging them into patterns dictated by the movement of your hand. Circles, whirls, straight lines…the magnet was capable of aligning those individual filings and, out of chaos, order was created. When the magnet was removed, chaos could quickly ensue if the iron filings were disturbed.

The effect of a magnet on iron filings is an

apt allegory for the effect of strong leadership

on the people in organizations. In business, the

Alignment

employees

and

But what does it take to create strong

alignment within a business? It’s clear to me that

it starts with the quality of the leader’s thinking. Yes, good old-fashioned introspection, enhanced

by deliberate efforts to leverage the thinking of

others – whether through books, blogs, podcasts, training, workshops, master mind groups or a mentor. Leaders have an obligation to out-think

those around them: out-think them in terms of

the sheer amount of time they spend thinking; out-think them in terms of the willingness to

embrace different points of view that challenge assumptions and habits.

Focused thinking

Life Coaching will spawn clear objectives and strategies for the business. Focused thinking will enable the

leader to communicate vision, strategies, tactics

and expected outcomes authentically and clearly, engaging the hearts and minds of employees. Focused thinking leads to high quality results because it creates a shared vision that can be easily understood and embraced by employees.

Try an alignment exercise that is very telling.

In a neutral, private setting, ask your employees to take out a piece of paper and answer the

following question: “What is the most important

goal our company has for 2016?” If the majority of employees cannot identify the single most

important goal, there’s an alignment problem. Then, as the leader, you have to determine whether

the problem arises from a lack of clarity in your own thinking about business objectives, or if it’s a product of ineffective communications. In either case, take time out to rethink, refresh, reinforce

and re-communicate why the business exists, how it benefits your customers, and how the members

of your team contribute to success. You’ll be astounded by the results.

Who knew that 8th grade science could teach us

such profound life lessons?

Granny J Eats Shh! Granny J has a secret. It’s Jakes on the corner of 3040 and Morris Road. It’s known for its burgers, beer and atmosphere, but I walked in one morning at 9am and they served me one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had in Flower Mound. The traditional breakfast started with delicious home fries cooked with onions, fresh and soft in the middle. That came with not just regular grits but cheese grits, two eggs, bacon-sausage or ham and a fresh baked large biscuit with gravy. All for just $7.95! You can get a lot of different sides for less than $3.00. You can also build your own omelette. Jake’s has a very clean and pleasant atmosphere with large TV screens all around no one knows about it. Wake up and smell the coffee at Jakes!

Why?

Real Estate

It Matters

E

ach week, our team talks to hundreds of potential clients about buying or selling their home. In those discussions, we’re really trying to understand why our clients want to sell so we know how we can help. It’s the WHY that matters. Clients move for a variety of reasons. • Better schools or a shorter commute • Closer to family • Better view or bigger yard. • More space, more house, more status • Downsizing increasingly, we’re hearing from people wanting less to maintain.

For those clients looking to downsize, the market is incredibly favorable. With limited inventory, our clients are able to sell in a favorable market and buy a smaller/ less expensive home while capturing the appreciation. That’s a win/win! If you’re moving up market though, don’t be discouraged. You’ve likely enjoyed some

appreciation in your current home which will help when you buy bigger. Since rates continue near historically low rates, you’re still in a great spot to capitalize. Call Tisha at White Realty today, at 512.695.6042 to find out how you can take advantage of this great market.

Regardless of the reason, more than anything, the WHY is what matters. We’re here to help you achieve your WHY. Understanding your WHY can also help us take full advantage of what the market gives us, increasing your earnings potential if you’re selling then buying another property. Of course, markets are unpredictable, so there are no guarantees. If I knew how to time any market, I’d be on a beach somewhere relaxing! Still, especially in real estate, there are some consistent cycles we can reference. In this case, many believe we are in the last 12 years of a seller’s market, where few homes are for sale and home values appreciate consistently. When the market “shifts”, more homes enter the markets and prices flatten or decrease. Buyers will have more control of the process because they’ll have more to choose and bid.

ASK THE THERAPIST TAYLOR COIN LMT: How do you massage a person with TMJ? “I begin with intra-oral massage (with gloved hands) using pressure on the medial and lateral pterygoids to release trigger points and muscle tension. Then, myofascial release is used on the neck muscles and pectoralis major to correct her forward shoulder posture and release pressure in the jaw. To release more trigger points and tension, the sternocleidomastoid was picked up and twisted. Finally, kneading, compression and trigger point release was used on the neck muscles.” How did this help your patient? “The techniques I used relieved pain and increased blood flow to the muscles. The endorphin levels are increased through massage, which further reduce Amy’s pain and stress. I also suggest daily exercises to my patients that involve stretching and retraction of the muscles we worked to keep the symptoms at bay.”

to

the

Association of America (ADAA), 70 percent of Americans experience stress daily. When our bodies sense stress, the brain releases chemicals into our bloodstream in order to help us fight potential threats. When our bodies don’t burn them off, many problems can occur: tense muscles, back pain, diarrhea or constipation, headaches and acne.

needed!” Unfortunately, only 14 percent of people make use of regular exercise to cope with stress.

Every day we are faced with challenges that keep

us from feeling like our best selves. My husband

can always tell when it’s happening to me. “For the

love,” he will say, “exercise.” It assists me in turning my distress into eustress.

It only takes about 45 minutes, three days a week,

for exercise to help us reduce stress, improving our

mood and our sleep. Even that small commitment

of pushing ourselves physically to distract ourselves

from emotional stress can be a powerful drug – no insurance, no harmful side effects.

Studies prove that exercise and movement in general aid in reducing muscle tension, assist our digestive systems to function properly, encourage better sleep and improve overall health. As a physical therapist, I have a strong desire to heal and nurture. My hope is that at S2S Functional Performance, we are helping our community heal not only physically, but emotionally as well.
