good friend of mine was just telling me about a powerful moment during one of his Denton County small-business networking meetings. As the group slowly went around

the room sharing a little bit about their respective companies, a quiet but very nice dent-repair guy stood up and mentioned that he had moved here years ago from Ukraine. It was clearly his first time to be at a networking meeting, and despite a slight language barrier, he did his best to explain who he was, what he did, and how he could help everyone in the room. Before he could finish, this exchange happened: “I’m sorry to interrupt,” a guest on the other side of the room said. “Did you say you’re from Ukraine?” “Ummm. Yes. Yes, I am.” “Well … I stand with Ukraine. We all do.” The entire room erupted with support for this young man, who undoubtedly was trying to make a living here in America while still being worried about relatives back home in his war-torn country. Even if you’re currently living under a rock, you know what’s going on over there. I won’t go into detail, but the bottom line is that it is very sad. And over the past few weeks, practically the entire nation has come together to support Ukrainians near and far. Regardless of what we all have going on in our lives and which side of the fence we are on politically, religiously, etc., we should all be counting our blessings for the peace we do have here in the United States. Furthermore, we should all be standing for and sending our prayers to the innocent men, women, and children in Ukraine. On behalf of my team at Murray Media, we, too, stand with Ukraine. Thanks for reading this month’s issue!

hen Chris Bowen says he’ll be knocking on plenty of doors ahead of the Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees election in May, he means it. The longtime Lewisville

resident and owner of Flower Mound-based Bowen Pools is on the ballot for Place 5 and said his lofty yet attainable goal is to knock on a staggering 2,500 doors before the election. “It’s definitely old-school, but it’s also effective because I’m getting positive feedback,” Bowen said. “One gentleman said he’d vote for me simply because I came to him and knocked on his door. The more people I speak to, the more my message is heard, and the more I get to hear about their issues and what they’d like to have changed.” He added, “I’m committed to putting in the effort.” This is Bowen’s first attempt at an elected seat, and he’s thrown himself into it with a full-steam-ahead attitude. Beyond knocking on doors, he can be found at local chambers of commerce events and meeting one-on-one with county leaders and fellow business owners. When we last caught up with him, he had taken a few hours off from knocking on doors to catch up on a replay of a recent school board meeting that he was forced to miss because he was out of town. Clearly, he’s not taking the opportunity to be on the LISD school board lightly. And for good reason. School board members are integral to a school district’s success, especially one as large as Lewisville. Along with five high schools, LISD serves 54 elementary and middle schools. It also oversees a handful of additional campuses. Board members set policies, vote on the budget, provide direction for the Superintendent, and foster the best environment for students. Bowen’s campaign emphasis includes providing more direction for student and staff safety, retaining quality employees, improving financial management practices, and building stronger academic, athletic, and fine arts programs. He added that he’s looking forward to working closely with LISD Superintendent, Dr. Lori Rapp.

Cont... He and his wife, Kourtney, have been proud Lewisville residents since 2014. Kourtney has been teaching for nine years, eight in the district, and is currently in her fifth year at Southridge Elementary School. They have two daughters, Emerson (2) and Olivia (5 months), both of whom will be in LISD schools before you know it. He believes in family values, traditions, community volunteerism, and a solid Christian upbringing. “My kids will be in LISD soon, and that’s one of my main points for running,” Bowen said. “I want to secure their future as well as the future of every child in LISD. With my wife being a teacher here, I want to be a positive voice for teachers, too.” Bowen said he’s always dreamed of making a positive impact on educating today’s youth, but all good things come with time and patience. For the past five years, he’s been focused on building his popular pool business — watching it go from a one-man-and-a-truck operation to one of the more successful pool and backyard remodeling companies in Denton County. Their services include changing and upsizing plumbing to accommodate new water features, adding in tanning ledges, and even changing the shape of pools. On new construction, Chris and his team have a knack for taking the smallest idea and making it larger than life with spas, covered patios, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and landscaping. Now that he has such a great team around him, he can chase his other life goals. “My professional career and volunteer service have prepared me well for the Lewisville school board,” he said. “I am a local business owner and an active chamber member. My business background allows me to look at the bigger picture and make decisions that benefit our students, LISD staff, and the business and residential community. I love to learn from others and find that quality, indepth conversation with a person will always reveal more than just facts and statistics, and it will result in a better understanding of their perspective.” To learn more about Bowen and his campaign,
