IPterygium: Surfer’s Eye What You Need to Know
By Dr Stephen Moffet O.D., Encinitas Visionf you’re a surfer, chances are you’ve spent countless hours in the sun, wind, and waves. While that salty air and endless stoke are unbeatable, there’s a condition that loves the same environment you do: pterygium, commonly known as surfer’s eye.
Pterygium is a growth of fleshy tissue that starts on the white part of the eye (the sclera) and can extend onto the cornea. It’s not as scary as it sounds, but it can be pretty annoying. This condition often looks like a wedge-shaped growth and can cause discomfort and vision problems.
The main culprits behind pterygium are prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, wind, and dust – basically, a surfer’s everyday environment. When you’re out catching waves, your eyes are getting a hefty dose of UV radiation from the sun, which is a big factor in the development of pterygium. Add in the wind and salty spray, and you’ve got a recipe for this eye issue.
Early on, pterygium might not cause any symptoms at all. As it grows, you could experience redness, inflammation, and a gritty feeling in your eye, kind of like there’s sand in it. If the growth advances, it might start to blur your vision or cause astigmatism by altering the shape of your cornea.
Preventing pterygium is all about protecting your eyes from the elements.
Here’s what you can do:
• Wear Sunglasses: Opt for a pair with 100% UV protection.
• Use a Hat: A wide-brimmed hat can provide extra shade for your eyes.
• Artificial Tears: Keeping your eyes moist with over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can help soothe irritation.
If you already have pterygium, treatments vary depending on the severity:
Mild Cases: Lubricating eye drops or anti-inflammatory medications can reduce discomfort.
Moderate to Severe Cases: If the pterygium is affecting your vision or causing significant discomfort, your eye doctor might suggest surgical removal. This is typically an outpatient procedure, but there’s a chance the growth can come back.
Don’t let pterygium keep you out of the water. With the right protection and care, you can keep your eyes healthy while enjoying the sport you love.
Just remember to gear up with those sunglasses and a hat before you hit the waves. Your eyes will thank you!
