, Mrs. Murphy s Message from Hilltop

Growing with Pride ~ Our children are beautiful learners. After the first weeks of school, I can assure you children are the most open and willing to share people! If a child felt new when they first walked through the door, they know they fit in now. Our returning Eagles have been so good about sharing friendship. Teachers continue to support positive interactions that will continue into older grade levels. We are so proud of their willingness to share.

Hilltop Classes and New Teachers ~ We want to thank our board for approving new teachers. I tell parents regularly, what makes our school feel like a small-town school is not how many children are in the building, it’s how many children teachers must build a relationship with in one year. It’s amazing the difference in managing 23 students compared to 20. Ask a kindergarten teacher — it truly makes a difference! We have added a teacher in PK, Kinder, First, and Second. They are highly qualified and gifts to their students and the teachers on their teams. We are so thankful.

Adding to Specials Rotation~ We currently have students attending Art, Music, Technology, and PE. Soon we will add another rotation: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This will prepare children with the knowledge,

confidence, and inspiration by exposing them to innovation and critical thinking. Many STEM lessons involve building models, science experiments, and technical design all driven with science concepts and children’s imagination.

PTA and AEF ~ I cannot say enough about these organizations. Be watching for information from them. They continue to provide us small town chances to keep us connected. The focus for both are our children. There are great ways for you to be a part of Argyle, the district, and our campus.

Visiting and Volunteering~ As you are well aware, safety and security is most important. It is also important for children to learn how things are done. For the first two weeks of school, we ask that parents not come to lunch. After students have learned the drill in two weeks, we want you to come to HILLTOP and have lunch with your kiddos! Also, fill out the background check and volunteer in the classroom, office, and with small group or individual children.

Grandparents week~ In September, we will celebrate grandparents. Students are welcome to invite your grandparents, friends, or family to have lunch at Hilltop. We do it by last name and look

We are thankful parents are so involved with what is happening at Hilltop. Another opportunity to know what is happening here is Conference Day. Our teachers will begin setting up meetings with everyone’s parents. This will allow a one-on-one conversation with parent and teacher to discuss current learning levels and goals for the year. Education is a team effort. This day allows us time to work together.

Argyle ISD’s Technology Integration Specialist Update

Argyle ISD’s Edtech Academy

A

rgyle ISD held its fourth annual EdTech Academy this summer. It is a day of professional training for teachers in the district and surrounding areas, focusing on educational tools and their implementation. They had 85 teachers sign-up this year with 17 AISD staff members as presenters. There were 18 different sessions presented throughout three different time blocks. The teachers had 5-7 sessions to choose from in each time block. Within each session, teachers were given time to integrate and practice with the tools they learned, some were able to go ahead and incorporate the new tools into lessons for their classes.

We completed Meet the Teacher and Parent Orientation with lots of smiling and eager faces. We’ve had many great changes this year to our building. We welcomed many new students and staff. We also implemented a new schedule with students now assigned to homerooms and a pod system. Fourth grade has nine teachers divided into three pods. Each pod has a math, ELAR, and Science/Social Studies teacher. The classes move together through each teacher. Fifth grade is similar with four teachers in two pods. There is one teacher for science, social studies, math and ELAR. However, students do not rotate as a homeroom. They are mixed throughout the day with other students within that same pod.

he 2017-2018 year is off to a great start for the fourth and fifth graders and teachers! If you have a student at Argyle Intermediate School and haven’t yet joined PTA or signed up to volunteer, please grab a packet from the office. The AIS PTA provides funding for educational speakers and presentations, teacher wish lists and hospitality, class field trips and parties, as well as Watch Dogs and Red Ribbon Week. Last year, the AIS PTA provided over $8,400 to meet the teachers’ “Wish List.” The list included various furniture for classrooms, a new keyboard for our music classes, science lab supplies, classroom sets of books, and an awesome ice machine for our teacher/staff break room. This year, the PTA has a budget of $6,400 to meet their teachers’ wish list and they need your help! They have a write-a-check campaign underway with a goal of $15,000. If they reach that goal, the PTA doesn’t plan to have any other fundraisers this school year! They are shooting for 100% participation and welcome corporate/ business sponsorships as well. Please contact Lacey Fenoglio at laceyfenoglio@ yahoo.com if you’re interested.

oach Joan Wittmis is not only a PE teacher at Hilltop Elementary, but she is also the coach for The Argyle Eagle Archery Team. Coach Wittmis has been coaching archery since 2009. The Argyle Archery program has set a name for itself and has seen a lot of growth in the past year. Last year Coach Wittmis had 300 archers in grades Kindergarten through 8th. Out of the 300 archers, 72 students competed on the state level, 48 on the national level, and 19 students competed at the worlds competition. The Hilltop Elementary Archery Team went to Orlando, FL on July 22nd and competed at Worlds. The team placed 8th in the Elementary Division with a team best score of 3,108 out of 40 teams. Coach Wittmis wants to involve more students in this year’s archery program and her goal is to have more teams go to Nationals. “Archery is a great program and it helps kids build a positive self-esteem and gain confidence,” said Wittmis. Coach Wittmis will send out information beginning October 16th for those interested in joining The Argyle Eagle Archery Team. Grades 3rd through 12th are able to join. For more information e-mail: jwittmis@argyleisd.com

s you can see by the photo, we have added some new faces to our team. The drivers and I are looking forward to seeing everybody again, as well as a safe and accident free school year. Please review the bus rules with your student so they can have a safe ride while on the school bus. We hope the adjustment to routes has made a positive impact. If you have not done so yet, please mark you child’s personal belongings with their name and school so we can return items in the event they have been left behind on the school bus. Each year the Transportation Department donates unclaimed lost and found items to a local charity. Thank you, Albert Rutledge Transportation Director

COACH BRADY BELL

Fills The Assistant Principal Position at Argyle Intermediate School

T

his year will be Coach Brady Bell’s 10th year working in Argyle ISD. This is his 15th year total working in the field of education. Throughout Coach Bell’s 15 years in education, he has taught Science, Math, and PE. He has coached boys and girls golf, basketball, volleyball and track. While coaching, Coach Bell and his teams have seen a lot of success. He has led the Argyle boys golf team to three state championships and helped lead the Argyle girls varsity basketball team to three state championships as well. He has taken 13 different teams to the state golf tournament (11 boys teams and 2 girls teams) and has been to the state basketball tournament five times (winning 3rd and placing 2nd twice).

The boys golf team has also won six straight district championships and four straight regional championships. This year Coach Bell takes his leadership to a different level as he begins his new position in Administration. Coach Bell is now the new Assistant Principal at AIS. Coach Bell says that he loves the challenge of learning a new role in education. He is a very competitive person with high expectations, so he is looking forward to becoming the best administrator he can be. His goal for this year is to learn his role so he can effectively help the students, teachers, and staff members at AIS and continue to improve an already amazing school.

he goal of a STEM class is to create a culture of inquiry and creativity that prepares students for challenging careers and real-world success. The new STEM class at Argyle Middle School does this through a variety of product-based units. The students start the year by exploring different inventors and inventions that allow them to explore possible careers that they might be interested in for the future. Mrs. Thetford, the STEM teacher at AMS, takes current events and real-world situations and converts them into units. In each unit, students examine the different careers involved, develop a real-world question, design a solution, construct a prototype, and test and evaluate the solution. If it does not work, then the students redesign and begin again. Units range from catapults to electric cars, forensics, and rockets. Mrs. Thetford’s goal by the end of the year is to engage her students in a project where they become interested and develop skills that will help them not only in school, but also in life. She also hopes that her students explore their career interests and hopefully find a career path that they will love.

Mrs. Luxton

Greenhouse Project Q & A Tell me how the idea came about to have the greenhouse built? I approached Mr. Gibson about starting an Environmental Science Club the year prior to moving into the new school at Canyon Falls. The mission was to encourage our youth to make connections to the natural world, to bring about environmental awareness, and to partner with the community to improve earth’s sustainability. The vision was to develop an outdoor educational center that would enhance the learning of all middle school students in all subject areas. From this sprang the idea to put in a garden and in addition, a greenhouse. In order to provide hands-on experiences and assume ownership and responsibility the Club members would serve as keepers of the garden and greenhouse. Members would collaborate with each other in decision making, planning and organizing

22

committees, educating their peers, and involving the student body through a variety of events and projects. What role did Lowe’s play in helping get the greenhouse built? I applied for and received a grant from Lowe’s to build the garden. Tom Reush from the Lowe’s in Flower Mound was instrumental in helping put together the materials for the project and bringing out volunteers from the Lowe’s store to help with the installation. Others who made this project possible were: • IDStudio4 - provided Architectural and Engineering plans for the greenhouse. • Caston Architectural Millwork – provided all materials and labor for the greenhouse. • RCC and Associates – contributed to the foundation and plumbing. • DJL Construction Consulting Services – organized and coordinated the project and provided labor. What class/classes will be able to benefit from the greenhouse? The new elective class, Green STEM, will be utilizing the garden and greenhouse as a living

lab and will be experimenting and working on various projects throughout the course. The Environmental Science Club will be working to further establish the grounds as a certified Schoolyard Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat program. Science is an everyday occurrence in a garden and greenhouse – my 7th grade science class will be making connections to the learning content from photosynthesis to plant tropisims. The garden and greenhouse can provide a variety of learning experiences – such a creative writing and drawing. photo courtesy of Pamela Arrington

SUMMER BAND TRIP

STATE WINNERS The Argyle Middle School Red Band was selected as a state winner in the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series. Recordings of “Tudor Sketches”, “Summer Resounding”, and “El Arco de los Cabos” will be distributed on a CD across the state of Texas as a reference recording for those compositions. This is a HUGE honor and is attributed to the hard work of the students involved.

BACK TO SCHOOL BAND CAMP Incoming 7th and 8th graders participated in our back to school band camp. During this time, we caught up with our friends and most importantly had a TON of fun! Students got to work preparing music for our upcoming school year and also for pep-rallies and other community events. This was a great start to the year!

A number of young musicians traveled to Seguin, TX to attend the Texas Lutheran University Summer Music Academy. This 5 day overnight camp was attended by students from all over the state of Texas. Our students were able to hone their skills on instruments, get to know other students from around the state, and develop independence that will permeate into every aspect of their lives.

The band hall has been buzzing with excitement as 120 new musicians begin their journey in band. We have been hard at work learning all about music and our instruments. In addition to the social events and musical concepts that students will learn in band, they will also strengthen a number of character traits that will lead them to success in the classroom, on the field or in the gym. There is a place for everybody in band. We will begin to test current 5th graders on instruments around spring break, so be on the lookout!

students are prepared for what life has to offer. This year he has several goals. He wants to focus on continuing the championship tradition for the Lady Eagles’ basketball program, focus on building relationships between the coaches and athletes on the middle school and high school level, continue to encourage the upperclassmen to be positive leaders and role models for underclassmen, allow younger players to fill important roles for their varsity

classroom and in sports. The work ethic that his parents both modeled allowed him to have a great experience in high school. During high school he was a multi-sport athlete and was a member of the National Honor Society. He started college as a Finance major but after one semester he realized that his true passion was teaching and coaching. This will be coach Westmoreland’s 15th year in education. Coach Westmoreland really enjoys helping students achieve success in all areas of school. His goal is for his students to leave for college, look back and feel like they had a great high school

team, and for all programs to be supporting all of the teams and athletics in Argyle ISD.

He grew up as the son of two educators and was able to see first hand the impact that teachers and coaches have on students. Coach Westmoreland’s father was a high school coach for 24 years and his mother taught elementary school for more than 30 years. s a youth, Sergeant Robert Mastropiero’s family moved around frequently. He spent his high school years living in the Caribbean and Lesser Antilles, where he learned the Spanish Language. He moved to the United States and attended St. Lawrence University in New York, where he earned a BS in Biology. After college, he attended The University of Massachusetts at Amherst and pursued a PhD in Biochemical Nutrition. Sergeant Mastropiero discovered Biochemistry really was not his thing so he went to work for IBM and Hewlett-Packard as an engineer and managing consultant for 29 years. He retired from corporate life and became a police officer for Trophy Club serving as a patrolman, school resource officer, and a detective specializing in juveniles and financial crimes. Mastropiero has three children, three grandchildren, three dogs, and an amazing wife. ARGYLE EDUCATION

FOUNDATION S

tarting a new school year in Argyle ISD (AISD) reminds us of the influx of growth our not-so-small town is experiencing. However, as we grow, we continue to see more and more friendly new faces throughout our community and schools. Once again, as in years past, we take this opportunity to introduce the Argyle Education Foundation (AEF) to our community members, both new and old. Established in 2003, AEF is a non-profit organization serving the AISD. Through fundraising efforts, we provided over $1.2 million dollars to the AISD toward teacher innovation, programming grants, scholarships, and supporting three teaching positions within the district since 2015. AEF financial resources are generated through grants, donations, and yearly fundraisers. For the 2017-2018 school year, AEF donated $182,200 to support three teachers salaries (to exceed state mandated classroom student teacher ratios) and four campus grants. This year AEF is happy to welcome six new members – Josh Connor, Lacey Fenoglio, Phil Loftis, Les Hurley, Chet Schrader, and Curtis Strange. This year also introduces the board

to our new President Joelle Zavzavadjian. Our dedicated board is comprised of individuals from our local businesses, communities, and neighborhoods who passionately volunteer together to enhance the learning environment within our schools. AEF kicks off the school year working toward our fundraising goals with the annual Foundation Night, September 13th, 6:00pm at Earls 377, Fuzzy’s, & Bumbershoots. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy “A Night Out To Dine Out.” Come learn what AEF is all about and celebrate our 2017 Golden Eagle Teacher Excellence Award winners, Kelly Little- Hilltop Elementary, Sarah Slaton – AIS, Cathy Baker- AMS, and Stacy Short – AHS. Mrs. Baker was also our Lisa M.Z. over all district Teacher of the Year. Congratulations ladies! Surely to be a fun

evening, 25% of all sales will benefit the AEF. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. 2018 will also see the return of AEF’s biggest event – The Gala. Development has already begun planning this spectacular evening, so join us April 14 ,2018 at Robson Ranch. Reserved table sales will be available this fall. We are currently looking forward to another successful event and are already accepting sponsorships from those interested in becoming part of this great night for a great cause. To Sponsor, Donate or Volunteer for the 2018 Gala, please contact Amy Williams at information@SupportArgyleISD.org . To learn more about AEF, please visit us on Facebook or www.SupportArgyleISD.org

Argyle Choir is

Ready to Soar! photos courtesy of Pamela Arrington

O

ne year ago, on the first day of the 2016-2017 school year, the Argyle ISD Choir program had 15 students enrolled across two campuses. Although these students felt outnumbered by other school programs that have existed for more than a decade or two, it did not prevent them from soaring. Those 15 students sang their hearts out all year long and did so in a way that attracted other students to the program. Through concerts, Pep Rally performances, and community events, those 15 students began to show the community of Argyle that singing can bring people together and that everyone has a voice to share. The awareness and support of the Argyle ISD Choir program grew so much over the past year that on the first day of the 2017-2018 school year Argyle ISD Choir had 98 students enrolled! While some of these students have moved from other school districts, many of our new Choir students have lived in Argyle their entire lives. I am so excited that we have students representing all parts of our school. Students in Choir this year can be seen on the field and in the gym for football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, track, soccer, cheerleading, and powerlifting. Choir students will also be involved in the theater program,

student council, dance, UIL academics, and many other clubs. It is truly incredible when all of these students come together in the Choir Room. Their minds, their spirits, and their voices truly harmonize with one another and they are blessing me with every step they take. We kicked off the year with our annual Choir Camp! We spent three days getting to know one another, experiencing what it is like to sing with one another, and even learning our first piece for our upcoming Fall Concert, which takes place October 30th at 7:00 p.m. in the Argyle High School Auditorium. On the last day of camp our students participated in the Choir Olympics, a fun day filled with many random and messy competitions such as a soda chug, a jello slurp, and a food relay. Everyone had a blast throughout the week and many new friends were made. The first week of school is now almost over and our program is looking forward to all of the new opportunities that will arise this year. We have many great concerts and programs planned and we hope that everyone in the community will try to make it to one of our performances. You can follow us all year long on Instagram at @argylechoir! Argyle ISD Choir would like to thank all of the people who have helped transform

our program. Thank you to Dr. Telena Wright and her administrative team for providing us the opportunity to offer more Choir classes throughout the day and expand the program to all four campuses. Thank you to Mr. James Hill, Mr. Scott Gibson, and Mrs. Renee Funderburg for supporting singing in our district and continuing to grant our programs the spaces and the opportunities to reach people in the community through singing. Lastly, thank you to all of the parents who have joined forces with the Choir Program this year. Without you, our energy bus wouldn’t be moving. You are what keeps our students coming to school and motivated to learn everyday. The Choirs of Argyle are ready to take on this year and we hope you will take it on with us!

LEGALLY BLONDE T

he Argyle High School Theatre Department is pulling out all the stops for its upcoming fall production of Legally Blonde the Musical, based on the 2001 hit film. Legally Blonde follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances. Equal parts hilarious and heart-warming, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal! This show is proving to be the biggest undertaking of the department

thus far. The cast of 40, (the largest in recent years) began rehearsing in late July. Students learned music for the entire show and also choreographed major dance numbers during the nearly two-week bootcamp. Many familiar faces from last year’s hit production of Grease will be making their return to the stage. Carly Haynes is the Harvard bound protagonist, Elle Woods while Parker Dial plays Warner, the object of Elle’s affection. Standing in Elle’s way of Warner’s love is Vivienne, played by Raleigh Turner. Helping Elle fulfill her dreams is Paulette, the sassy hairdresser, portrayed by Gracie Arthur. Also involved is the “Greek Chorus” played by Berret Buvinghausen, Avery Winter, and Bella Zindel. Toby Smith is the intimidating law professor who challenges Elle and the other Harvard students. Colby Raasch’s character, Emmett, encourages Elle to believe that anything is possible. Katie Haynes jumps back onto the stage as fitness queen, Brooke Wyndham, who is on trial for murder. Audiences will be dazzled by the limitless costume changes and the addition of live dogs playing the roles of Bruiser Woods and Rufus.

ROUNDING OUT THE CAST ARE: Izzy Adoue, Jackson Barnes, Charis Beivitt, Naomi Brooks, Tanner Bubeck, Peyton Deffenbaugh, Caitlin Deramo, Grace Fife, Alex Govea, Javy Govea, Grady Henexson, Hunter Jones, Mattie Kelton, Zack Lacrosse, Talia Mclaughlin Miranda Miller, Slade Monroe, Aidan Montecino, Georgia Penn, Jake Pool, Kate Repp, Alysa Sharp, Mikayla Simmons, Savannah Simmons, Ty Smith, Lauren Van Zee, Campbell Wilmont, and Isabelle Wolfe.

down, the students!” “Our job as teachers are to teach them, but the reality is that they teach me just as much.” “I have become a better person because of them.” A fun fact about Mrs. Baker - She likes to have fun no matter what she is doing. She likes to turn everything into a game. If she gets stuck in traffic she will play a game where she looks at the car next to her and creates the story of their lives.

in July. Prior to joining the team, she spent 14 years in the medical field caring for patients at an OBGYN office in Grapevine and then later working with Urology Clinics of North Texas in Flower Mound. She is the proud mom of two wonderful boys, Blake, (9) and Mathew (4), and has been married for 13 years to her high school sweetheart, Jonathan. Her family is excited about being a part of the Argyle schools and looks forward to making memories as her boys grow up as Eagles. Working for the maintenance department allows Mrs. Shawhart the ability to continue caring for fellow AISD team members and serve the community to keep Argyle ISD soaring. She enjoys working with Tommy Ledford and their team as they continue to grow with the rapid expansion of the AISD community. Mrs. Shawhart says that the department is amazing to work with and they make the department feel like a small family and not just a job.

Healthy Snacks

W

ith back to school comes the stress of making lunches and providing healthy snacks for my kids. I’m not sure how your kids do, but mine come home famished and tear through my pantry like the Tasmanian Devil if I don’t have a planned snack ready for them. Trying to provide a filling, nutritious and (let’s be honest), easy snack, is challenging. Here are some tips and resources to hopefully make this next school year a bit easier. Snacks are a major source of energy and nutrients for our growing kids. Snacks should be planned so they contribute to the day’s total nutrient intake. So how much does your child need? Remember your child’s activity level will also help determine how many calories he/she needs on a daily basis. The needed calories should come from a good variety of sources for those children without food allergies or other dietary restrictions. The link below has caloric needs and where those calories should come from. www.healthychildren.org/SiteCollectionImages/ energybalance_calories_chart.jpg

Here is a list of some easy and healthy snacks… • Low sugar, whole grain breakfast cereal • Low fat string cheese and a handful of almonds • Fruit smoothies

NEW EXPANDED HOURS

• Nuts & raisins • Whole wheat pita slices, cut up veggies or pretzels with low fat ranch or hummus to dip • Fruit slices dipped in low fat flavored yogurt • Trail mix (popcorn, nuts, dried fruit, seeds, cereal, granola) • Hard boiled eggs • Peanut butter and an apple • Whole wheat English muffin with pizza sauce, veggies, and cheese • Frozen banana rolled in yogurt and granola

More websites with ideas listed below: www.100daysofrealfood.com/85-snacks-for-kidsand-adults/ www.choosemyplate.gov/ www.superhealthykids.com/recipe-category/ snacks/ Key to successful snacking is making it easy for both the parent and the child. Prepare the food ahead of time. Wash, cut and bag fruits and veggies so the portion size is correct and the child can reach, grab and go. Bag or store your protein and carb together so no extra effort is needed. With a little extra time invested on the front end, healthy snacking can be easier.
