SATURDAY FLY FISHING WORKSHOPS

I conduct these workshops from November through April on Saturdays in my fly shop. I cover various topics and many take these as a basic course to get started in fly fishing.

Workshops are held from 10a.m. to noon at the fly shop on the dates listed. The cost is $20/per person. You can register either online at www.murraysflyshop.com or call us at 540-984-4212.

FINE POINTS OF NYMPH FISHING FOR TROUT January 12, 2019 You can catch many large trout with the techniques, flies and tackle we cover in this two hour workshop. Special water reading is also covered here along with a refined indicator system which helps in detecting the trouts' strikes. Harry Murray will be using a slide show that will show the various types of water and the best flies used for nymph fishing for trout whether you are fishing in the Shenandoah National Park, stocked trout streams, or in the Rocky Mountains.

TROUT FISHING IN THE SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK 101 February 23, 2019 Learn to Fly Fish! This two hour workshop will feature a slide show and a map review of the Shenandoah National Park in order to share with you my 40 years of fishing in the Park. My goal is to help you find the best streams, tactics, and flies so that you may enjoy the Park and its trout fishing as much as I do. The Shenandoah National Park asked me to write a book on the Park many years ago, to which I did. This book is the official book for the Park--Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park by Harry Murray. By using this book and the maps we have in the fly shop I can help you find some of the best streams to fish in the Shenandoah National Park. Most beginners take this 2 hour class and then follow up with our On The Stream Mountain Trout Schools in the spring. Space is limited so reserve your spot today!

SMALLMOUTH FISHING ON THE SHENANDOAH RIVER 101 February 9, 2019 March 16, 2019 This 2-hour class will show you the best access points on both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River by utilizing my master map and the books I have written--Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams and Fly Fishing Techniques for Smallmouth Bass. I will be presenting a slide show on how to fish streamers, nymphs, and topwater flies in the various sections of the river as the season progresses. There are special discussions on selecting the specific artificial nymphs to match the natural nymphs and the best tactics to use. Likewise, after identifying the natural minnows in the river I will show you how to choose the best flies to match these minnows and the most productive tactics. Topwater fly fishing for bass is one of the most exciting forms of angling so I will reveal the special methods which will enable you to refine your tactics. My goal with this class is to help you find excellent fishing throughout the Shenandoah Valley for smallmouth bass. Typically students who attend this class end of taking one of our Smallmouth Bass On The Stream Schools during the summer to get hands on experience on the Shenandoah River.

LEARN TO FLY CAST & RIG TACKLE March 2, 2019 March 23, 2019 April 13, 2019 If you want to brush up on your fly casting, learn a new cast, or simply try it for the first time then this is the class for you. On our casting lawn, I will teach you how to perform all of the standard casts as well as roll casts, curve casts, and shooting line. After the casting class we will then proceed back to the fly shop where I will show you how to rig your tackle including the knots to use when putting your line and backing on a fly reel. We provide the rod and reel outfits for you to use for the class or if you prefer you can bring your own.
