A
n average of half a million people attend the Royal Show each year, almost 30% of the State’s population. Generations have enjoyed the Show’s offerings and continue to do so. The Show is South Australia’s longest running and largest community event – it’s a State icon. In 2010 the Show received its second largest number of competitive entries in its 235-Show history – 30,087 entries – only 12 entries short of an all time record were received. So the call has gone out to anyone and everyone, if you can cook, knit, crochet, paint, take photos, breed cattle, sheep or pigs, or have a clever pet, the options are endless, why not compete at the Royal Show. There is something for everyone at the Show, amazing entertainment, a family carnival atmosphere, over 500 commercial exhibitors, animals, stunning horticulture displays and food to please all palates.

There are five feature breeds at this year’s Show; Santa Gertrudis beef cattle, Corriedale sheep, Ayrshire dairy cattle, Schnauzer dogs and Berkshire pigs. The Show is a wonderful opportunity for city folk, in particular, to see large farm animals or even direct questions to a farmer. So make sure you spend time at the animal pavilions as the farmers enjoy sharing their experiences with the public. It’s with great pleasure that we acknowledge IGA as the Royal Show’s presenting partner for the next three years and the continuation of the Seven Network and Coca-Cola Amatil as Royal Show premier partners. The support and commitment of our partners and sponsors allows the Show to continue to grow and provide a wonderful experience for the broader community. The 2011 Royal Adelaide Show will be action-packed, it continues to be the one special must-do event for families each year; it’s definitely shaping up to be a wonderful Show!

One for the family, Jurassic Coaster is a wild and crazy rollercoaster. Making its debut at the Royal Adelaide Show, owner Peter Melonas says while the ride is suitable for all ages, everyone should expect a few surprises.

Described as “not for the fainthearted” by veteran showman Elwin Bell Senior, this extreme ride features a giant electronic arm that spins around, upside down, while sitting 40 metres above the ground. Made in Holland, the ride has been popular at Shows around the country – 2011 is its first time in Adelaide.

journey back in time at the Show Archives & Museum pen every day of the Show from 10am to 5pm, the Archives & Museum provides an insight into the history of the Royal Adelaide Show and Royal Adelaide Wine Show, and is an important record of the beginning of agricultural, pastoral, viticultural and manufacturing industries in South Australia.
Archives & Museum is a must for anyone interested in our State’s history. It also demonstrates the continued relevance of the RA&HS to South Australia and the unchanging nature of our charter, which is to contribute to the success and promotion of primary industry in South Australia.

Schnauzers one step ahead Described as the ‘dog with the human brain’, Schnauzers will be the feature breed in this year’s Dog competition.
P
resident of the Schnauzer Club Mr Andrew Kidd says the
middle-sized Schnauzer can be trained “to do just about anything, from search and rescue to therapy work and sniffing out cancers”. “You can easily over-train Schnauzers in obedience and agility,” he says. “They always try to keep one step ahead of you which makes them a delight to live with. “They have a wonderful temperament and are great judges of character.” Developed 400 to 500 years ago in Germany and Austria, the original Schnauzer was a general farm dog, working sheep and cattle, catching rats and mice and guarding wagons. “Their special duty though was to watch over the children whilst older family members worked on the farm,” says Mr Kidd. “This led to their other nickname – the kinderwatcher or child minder. “Although

people do not leave children alone with any dog these days, Schnauzers – as a general rule – have a love of children. “The Miniatures were developed as a smaller breed to keep the homes free of vermin whilst the Giant was developed to be a guard in the fields and paddocks.” According to Mr Kidd, the feature breed status along with the staging of the 25th Anniversary Schnauzer Specialist Show the day after Royal Show judging, is expected to entice a large number of entries, including a strong field from interstate.
“The trophy for Best Schnauzer Overall is expected to be fiercely contested.” Mr Kidd, who breeds and shows middlesized and Giant Schnauzers, will be entering 2 dogs this year. “My wife, Marion, and I have been competing at the Royal Adelaide Show since we were children,” he says. “I first showed a Papillon when I was 11 and Marion’s family showed Samoyeds when she was nine. We have not missed a Show since, not even when we lived interstate for two years, and have competed in both the conformation and obedience sections. “We have owned and shown all three breeds of Schnauzer, but our big love is the middle-sized breed, the original Schnauzer.” Schnauzer judging will take place on September 2. A talk about the breed will be held during the lunch break in the judging ring.

developing an animal with the ability to produce both meat and wool. Today, the Corriedale is renowned for producing good quality carcases of lamb, hogget or mutton and heavy cutting, bright fleeces. “As a kid we would drive the sheep up in the old truck on the Sunday. The rest of the Show was closed so we would walk around the Showground while it was quiet and look at things until we got told off. “I also remember going around the Show with other sheep breeders’ kids and going on the rides.” These days Mr Lush’s attention is firmly in the sheep ring and, with Corriedales the feature breed in 2011, he’s planning to bring up to 22 sheep to Adelaide. “The Show is a great opportunity to see what other breeds and breeders are doing and to discuss the industry in general,” he says. “The tremendous venue is another highlight, and the Show is a great place to introduce city people to the farming world.” Photography: John Kruger

Premium pigs are Kelly’s pride & joy Ever since Kelly Muster was a toddler, visits to the Royal Adelaide Show have meant spending plenty of time in the pig section.
K
elly was often there helping her grandparents, Joy and Colin Lienert – who was awarded an OAM in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to the pig industry – prepare their prized Lynjoleen Berkshires ready for judging. Fast forward 15 years and Kelly is a successful exhibitor in her own right – in 2010 her favourite sow, Schoenfeld Wilpenna, won the
Champion Berkshire Sow of the Show and Kelly also won the Junior Pig Judging Competition. This year she plans to enter eight of her stud Berkshires. “My grandparents taught me the art of showing pigs,” says Kelly, joking that nowadays they share a friendly rivalry. “The exhibitors in the pig section are like extended family and I look forward to catching up with everyone each September.”

Royal Show veterans, the Muster family – whose 1500-hectare farm on the outskirts of the Barossa is planted to wheat, barley, peas, canola, beans, oat and triticale – also exhibit in the Grain and Fodder Section and have won numerous prizes over the years for their grain and hay. Kelly’s Mum, Robyn, is also Vice Chairman of the Grains and Fodder committee and was the first female elected to the Adelaide Show Council. “We always stay in Adelaide close to the Showground for the duration of the Show,” says Kelly. “Each morning at 6am we make our way to the pig section to feed the animals and clean out their pens. We also wash the pigs prior to judging on the Sunday – it’s my favourite day of the Show.”
“The Berkshire breed is highly sought after for its marbling qualities. It’s regarded as the ‘Wagyu’ of the pork industry.” When it comes to Berkshires, the Muster family has a long association with the breed. They’ve kept the premium pigs for the last 30 years and Kelly, aided by mum Robyn, registered their first stud pigs in 2005. Brother Travis also assists, hammer-milling the pig feed and
supplying the straw which is used as bedding for the echo shelter. Kelly and Robyn deliver their Berkshires to the Kapunda abattoirs, Menzels, and sell direct to local chef Saskia Beer of Barossa Farm Produce and premium butchers Feast Fine Foods and Skara Smallgoods. And if looking after her prizewinning pigs isn’t enough, Kelly recently completed a Certificate 2 in Horticulture at Roseworthy Campus. She also works at a Barossa garden centre and is a keen tennis and hockey player. Photography: John Kruger

Berkshires Originating in the United Kingdom, the Berkshire pig is the oldest recorded breed of pig in Britain. It’s reportedly a favourite of the Royal Family, who for years kept a herd of Berkshires at Windsor Castle. In Australia, Berkshires were the first breed to be registered in 1909. Berkshire pigs are black with six white points, including four white feet, a white tail and white on the face. In the judging ring, the Berkshire must have these six points. When judging stud pigs the judge looks for a sow with good teating, hams and conformation, and one that can walk properly. Pig committee chairman David Fechner says organisers are expecting a strong field of entries, including several interstate competitors.

GreatGrandma Marj resides in Western Australia, daughter Yvonne lives in Coober Pedy, and granddaughter Deb and great-granddaughter Nickayla now live in Edwardstown. Deb says that she was keen for the female members of the family to start a Royal Show tradition as a way of encouraging her daughter, Nickayla, to participate. “It’s something new and creative that we all can participate in and it’s great to show Nickayla that we can do something as a family,” says Deb. “With various age groups displaying their skills at The Show, it is a great way of keeping the skills alive which

orget the footy finals, South Australia’s men will be battling it out in a different arena come Royal Show time, with the Art, Craft and Cookery committee introducing a men-only chocolate cake category in 2011. The brainchild of FiveAA radio presenter Amanda Blair – a keen supporter of the Royal Show cookery section – the Men’s Chocolate Cake competition requires entrants to whip up their favourite choccy cake. Icing and decoration is optional, though the cake must be round and 20cm in diameter. Art, Craft and Cookery chair Ann Bone said the committee was always looking for ways to include more of the community in their competitions and thought Amanda’s suggestion of a special class dedicated to the blokes was a fun way of achieving this. “Everyone likes a chocolate cake and with more and more men taking an interest in domestic cooking, largely due to the popularity of TV cooking shows, we thought this would attract those men who want to be involved but might not feel confident about cooking against the ladies,” says Ann. Amanda, who will also be guest judge, said the level of interest had been excellent for a first-time competition, and she was looking forward to tasting the entrants’ creations come judging day. “I think it’s tremendous that there has been a real return to the kitchen and am encouraged by the amount of entries for this category in its first year,” says Amanda. “I might even give extra points if they deliver their cakes wearing a traditional kitchen apron!” See the Art, Craft and Cookery exhibits, including all the prize winners, in the Goyder Pavilion.

The ancient arts of farriering and blacksmithing will be showcased at this year’s Royal Show, with the South Australian Farrier’s and Blacksmiths Association to stage the national championship on the last three days of The Show.
C
ompetitors from around Australia and overseas are expected to test their skills under the watchful eye of guest
judge Mr Greg Murray, currently head farrier at Sha-tin racecourse in Hong Kong and former head farrier at Lindsay Park Stud in the Barossa. Competition organiser and president of the SA Farrier’s and Blacksmith’s Association Mr Tim Hill said farrier and blacksmithing competitions have been held at rural and country shows in Britain and Europe for over 100 years. “The competitions are used for learning and up-skilling and for keeping traditional methods of farriering and blacksmithing alive,” he said. The competition includes several categories, including forging (making two therapeutic shoes in an allocated time frame); blacksmithing (making a fire poker or tool using blacksmithing skills); artistic blacksmithing (scroll-work for gates, houses etc); and two-man forging – a spectacular event that involves two men building heavy horse shoes with sledgehammers. A threeman draught event will also be held on the Saturday.
competitions
National championship keeps traditions alive “The horse shoeing event is the premier event,” says Mr Hill. “It’s judged in three stages – foot preparation, shoe making and final fit, where the shoe is actually fitted and nailed to the horse’s hoof.” The competition is run over three stages – open, intermediate and novice, with competitors progressing to the next level once 200 points are accumulated at a State level. The competitor with the highest point score after the national championship is declared the Open Winner, the title last year going to Tim Heeb from Queensland. The Farriers and Blacksmiths Competition will be held September 9 at the southern end of the Beef Cattle judging lawn.

“For many families it’s become a tradition to visit our stand and we’ve watched little kids become big kids over the ten years we’ve been at The Show.” 1 x BK Maze Game
As well as offering a full range of Beanie Kids, David’s two stands – one in the Jubilee Pavilion and one in Show bag Hall – sell a selection of teddy bears, the BK Show bag and Webkins Show bag.

“This year we are also offering a Nooks Show bag, which is a new collectable coming onto the marketplace.” 1 x BK Bouncy Ball
According to David, The Show is the ideal way to promote his business due to the high volume of people that come through the gates. “The Show is our biggest promotional event for the year – it takes three weeks for us to put everything together. “But the expressions and joy on the children’s faces makes it all worthwhile.”

family member Brett Charlesworth revealed the secret to this overwhelming success: “It’s really simple. We just set out to make our Showbags chock-a-block full of Charlesworth products, with no added gimmicks or novelties, and then sell them at a heavily discounted price. In other words, old-fashioned show bags the way they were meant to be.” “We believe the Show is all about family and having fun and I

Charlesworth Nuts has been a South Australian family business since 1934 and is a member of the Family Business Hall of Fame in recognition of its iconic status.
