Vermeer in Detail is the fifth title in the successful In Detail series, following Van Eyck, Bruegel, Bosch and Caravaggio. Johannes Vermeer (1632−1675) was one of the most important painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Today, his paintings Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Lacemaker, The Milkmaid, and others are among the most famous and beloved – and closely examined – in the history of art. This book allows you to explore the Delft master’s work through large full reproductions as well as exceptional close-up details from his paintings. Vermeer depicted female figures and everyday objects with compelling

realism. Yet his work also has a poetic and dreamy atmosphere, enchanting the viewer. The 120 details in this book are arranged by themes corresponding with Vermeer’s occasionally surprising interests. The painter showed his appreciation of other masters, for instance, by placing their paintings in his interiors. The faces of young women and their shawls, caps, hats, ribbons and curls draw the viewer’s eye and invite us to enter their world. The eighteenth century was an age when not only the aristocracy but a burgeoning middle class could enjoy a remarkable flowering of the arts. But it was a man’s world; any woman who wished to succeed as an artist had to overcome numerous obstacles. In a society in which women were required to marry, reproduce, and conform to rigid social conventions a professional artist risked becoming an object of gossip and hostility. Nevertheless, for a woman who had charm and good looks, was ambitious, and allied talent with hard work, success was attainable. This book examines the careers and working lives of celebrated

artists like Angelica Kauffman and Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun but also of those who are now forgotten. As well as assessing the work itself – from history and genre painting to portraits – it considers artists’ studios, the functioning of the print market, how art was sold, the role of patrons and the flourishing world of the lady amateur. It is enriched by up to 55 illustrations in glorious colour.

The years since the collapse of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 have seen the rise of a new freedom to define art—Who makes it? Where can it be found? What is its commercial value?—and, consequently, the reevaluation of art’s place in society. Kelly Grovier surveys the dynamic developments in art practice worldwide since 1989, focusing on artists whose fresh visual vocabulary and innovation reflect these past turbulent decades. The book’s ten chapters examine the key themes in contemporary art—portraiture in the age of face transplants and facial recognition software, political activism, science, and

religion, to name a few—by artists including Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst, George Condo, Marlene Dumas, Sean Scully, Cindy Sherman, Banksy, Ai Weiwei, Antony Gormley, Christo and Jean-Claude, Jenny Holzer, Chuck Close, and Cornelia Parker. A chapter-length timeline at the end of the book traces the evolution of art from 1989 to today by closely examining one key artwork from each year. Art Since 1989 is a lucid and engaging look at what may prove to be one of the more tempestuous eras in human history, if not the history of art.

Edgar Degas is best known as a chronicler of the ballet, yet his work in monotype reveals his restless experimentation. In the mid-1870s, Degas was introduced to the monotype process – drawing in ink on a metal plate that was then run through a press. Captivated by the monotype’s potential, he embraced it with enthusiasm, taking the medium to radical ends. He expanded the possibilities of drawing, created surfaces with heightened tactility, and invented new means for new subjects, from dancers in motion to the radiance of electric light, from women in intimate settings to meteorological effects in nature.

Preview

With his monotypes, Degas is at his most modern, capturing the spirit of urban life, depicting the body in new ways, and exploring abstraction. Published to accompany an exhibition at MoMA, this richly illustrated catalogue presents approximately 120 monotypes and some 60 related works in other mediums. Texts by curators, scholars, and conservators explore the creative potency of Degas’s rarely seen monotypes and highlight their impact on his wider practice.

Rik Wouters equally mastered painting, sculpting and drawing: his extraordinary career has made him an essential representative of Modern Art in Belgium. The retrospective exhibition organized by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, in partnership with the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Antwerp, is exceptional. For the first time, the two museums bring together in one exhibition the most important collection of works by the illustrious Belgian artist of the early 20th

Through his visual language, the construction of his subjects and the luminous richness of his palette, he developed an avant-garde style, while also being associated with artists like Ensor, then Cézanne and even Renoir. In the course of a career covering more than sixty years, Auerbach has established a still-growing international reputation for his paintings with their vigorous, precise brushwork. He is also respected as one of modern and contemporary art’s clearest thinkers. Catherine Lampert has had unique access to the artist since 1978, when she first became one of his sitters. With an emphasis on Auerbach ‘speaking’, drawn from her conversations with him and from published and archival interviews, she gives a rare insight into his professional life, working methods and philosophy.

Auerbach also reflects on the places, people and experiences that have shaped his life. These include arriving in Britain as a nearly8-year-old refugee from Nazi Germany in 1939, finding his way in the London art world of the 1950s and 1960s, his friendships with Leon Kossoff, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, among others, and his approaches to painting. The text is complemented by illustrations of Auerbach’s paintings and drawings as well as by images from the studio and personal photographs that have never been published before.

Louise Bourgeois An Unfolding Portrait Published by

forthcoming, sept. 2017

Louise Bourgeois: An Unfolding Portrait explores the prints and books of the celebrated sculptor. This little-known body of work is vast in scope-numbering some 1,200 individual compositions-and highly significant within her larger practice. These works encompass the same themes and motifs that occupied Bourgeois throughout her career, and they are explored here within the context of related sculptures, drawings and early paintings. This investigation sheds light on Bourgeois’ creative process overall, most vividly through the evolving print states and variants that led to her final compositions; seeing these sequences unfold is akin to looking over the artist’s shoulder as she worked.

24

Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this catalog presents more than 270 prints and books, organized thematically, and includes an essay that traces Bourgeois’ involvement with these mediums within the broader developments of her life and career. It also emphasizes the collaborative relationships that were so fundamental to these endeavors. Included are interviews with Bourgeois’ longtime assistant, a printer she worked with side-by-side at her home/ studio on 20th Street in New York and the publisher who, in the last decade of her life, encouraged her to experiment with innovative prints that broke the traditional boundaries of the medium.

Digital Art Published by

Thames & Hudson

# of pages

digital

forthcoming, sept. 2017

Digital technology has revolutionized the way we produce and experience art today. Not only have traditional forms of art such as printing, painting, photography, and sculpture been transformed by digital techniques and media, but the emergence of entirely new forms such as internet and software art, digital installation, and virtual reality has forever changed the way we define art. Christiane Paul surveys the developments in digital art from its appearance in the 1980s to the present day and looks ahead to what the future may hold. She discusses the key artists and works in the genre, drawing a distinction between work that uses digital practices as tools to produce

traditional forms and work that uses them to create new kinds of art. She explores the broader themes and questions raised by these artworks such as viewer interaction, artificial life and intelligence, political and social activism, networks and telepresence, and issues surrounding the collection, presentation, and preservation of digital art. This third, expanded edition of the popular resource investigates key areas of digital art practice that have gained prominence in recent years, including interactive public installation, augmented and mixed reality, social networking, and file-sharing technologies.

Published to accompany the first US museum exhibition of the work of Germanborn Grete Stern and Argentinean Horacio Coppola, From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires explores the individual accomplishments and parallel developments of two of the foremost practitioners of avantgarde photography in Europe and Latin America. The book traces their artistic development from the late 1920s, when Stern established a pioneering commercial studio, ringl + pit, with her friend Ellen (Rosenberg) Auerbach, and Coppola began groundbreaking experimentations with photography in his native Argentina, to their joint studies at the Bauhaus and travels through Europe in the early 1930s,

through the mid-1950s, by which time they had firmly established the foundations of modern photography in Buenos Aires. The couple effectively imported the lessons of the Bauhaus to Latin America, and revolutionized the practice of art and commercial photography on both sides of the Atlantic by introducing such innovative techniques as photomontage, embodied in Stern’s protofeminist works for the women’s journal Idilio, and through Coppola’s experimental films and groundbreaking images for the photographic survey Buenos Aires 1936.

Lebanese artist Walid Raad is an influential voice in art from the Middle East. Published for his first comprehensive exhibition in the US, this catalogue surveys three decades of Raad’s practice in photography, video and performance. Beginning with his groundbreaking project The Atlas Group (1989-2004), to his recent work on the history of art in the Arab world (2007-ongoing), it offers an overview of Raad’s career and features his most momentous bodies of work. Raad explores the ways we represent war and history, casting doubt on the veracity of photographic and video documentation.

Essays by scholars place Raad’s art in the context of contemporary photography and video, as well as art made in Lebanon since the 1960s; provide an overview of Raad’s performance lectures; and examine Raad’s most recent bodies of work made in the Islamic galleries at the Louvre and Metropolitan Museum of Art, which explore the history, collecting and display of historical and modern art and artifacts from the Arab world and Iran. A special contribution by Raad presents a fictional interview with multiple artists, curators and writers.

Jazz Age Fashion focuses on women’s clothing of the period, although not exclusively, whilst the introductory text will examine the social, political and cultural influences of the period setting into context the fashion of the period. Characterised by exuberance and optimism, the jazz age was a symptom of the end of the Great War and and the birth of America as a new world power. It was a period of unprecedented social change for women who were, for the first time in history, given the vote on a par with men (1920 USA, 1928 Britain). The birth of Modernity in the 1920s established women’s lives as ‘active’ and

fashion reflected and celebrated these new social roles. A new ‘boyish’ silhouette, la garconne, became the look for women of the twenties with a gradual acceptance of trousers as fashionable dress. The passive sun bathing became the active swimming, and companies such as Jantzen recognised these changes creating the’speed suit’ for women. The 1920s saw technology and innovative textiles, with the introduction of the artificial silk Rayon and the zip, contributing to an easier approach to fashionable dress.

forthcoming, sept. 2017

Textile design has been liberated and democratized by digital media. With new technology allowing for more precise manipulation and larger variation of materials and patterns, textile designers have found new ways to create ambitiously, experiment, and be inspired. At the same time, the rise of digital processes has led to a renewed appreciation of traditional craftsmanship and the handmade, and of the tactility and construction of textiles and surfaces. In The Pattern Base, Kristi O’Meara and Audrey Victoria Keiffer, cofounders of the Chicago-based design studio and online archive The Pattern base, showcase more

than 550 textile, surface, fashion, and print designs from over 150 designers working around the world. Part One is a sourcebook of these designs, organized by type of pattern: Geometric, Floral, Representational, Digital Abstract, Illustrative, and Fabric Swatches.
