33rd Museu da Casa Brasileira Design Award Catalog
Awarded and selected 2019
33rd Museu da Casa Brasileira Design Award Catalog MCB design award has been held since 1986 by museu da casa brasileira, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo. The award, the most traditional of its kind in the country, reveals talents and renowned professionals and companies, reinforcing the museum’s role in promoting debate and critical consideration on the contemporary production of objects linked to daily life, as well as disseminating design and Brazilian creations. The Poster Contest is held annually to encourage graphic design and revitalize the importance of posters as a centerpiece in media campaigns. In this edition, 428 entries were received from participants from 18 states. The judging committee was coordinated by Gustavo Piqueira, who selected another 43 works that are part of the Poster Contest exhibition, along with the winning poster and both second places. Visitors to the exhibition can select their favorite poster by popular vote. In 2019, the 33rd MCB Design Award underwent major changes. In this edition, the prototype modalities were eliminated, keeping only the product categories (Construction, Electronics, Lighting, Furniture, Textiles, Transport, Utensils). For the first time, participants of the unpublished Written Works were asked the digital file of the complete work, which allowed the composition of a judging committee with the collaboration of judges from outside the state of São Paulo, who contributed with remote assessment. 559 entries were received, evaluated by two independent judging committees, coordinated by Levi Girardi (Products) and Teresa Riccetti (Written works). As a result of the Design Award, MCB presents the exhibition that runs from November 2019 to February 2020, and this catalog brings together 91 award-winning projects selected from the Products and Written Work categories, as well as the posters chosen by the judging committee of the Poster Contest. Publishing this material was made possible through a partnership with ContentXP and ArqXP Magazine.

POSTER CONTEST Judging Commission Gustavo Piqueira (Coordinator), Tereza Bettinardi Vanessa Queiroz, Gil Tokio e Celso Hartkopf Contrary to popular belief, it is not for a jury to arbitrarily impose their values and preferences on the evaluation of a body of work. On the contrary, the movement must occur in the opposite direction: the process begins from the content exhaled by the sample to be analyzed, it starts from the aspects to which it points. It is up to the jury to welcome and respect this initial orientation - no matter how closely or non-aligned it is to previous expectations and concepts - to then work on it. In this terms, the message delivered by the posters subscribed for the 33rd MCB Design Award Poster Contest could not have been clearer: reverberating the current voice emanating from a variety of sources - from cultural institutions to Whatsapp groups – the number of works in which references to social issues and the political scene predominated was extremely significant. Issues that, except for very occasional exceptions, were not usually addressed in previous editions. In most cases – considering from cultural institutions to Whatsapp groups - the topic has often been poorly presented. Why propose food for thought, when it is easier to impose “the truth”? Some works, so thrilled by the possibility of exposure, would even ignore that the object they leaned on should act as a poster for the 33rd MCB Design Award. However, despite part of the individual messages being on a misplaced path, it could not invalidate the collective message. Denying it, awarding works that, although carried out with graphic excellence (several of them) and skillful articulation of reasoning (not so many), avoided the comment of these broader contents, would be to deny the primordial function of the contest itself. After all, if absent from the original regulation, the decision to include this criterion as an item of the final selection came after considering the set of posters. It is therefore a vital ingredient in the composition of the scene to be exposed - and awarded. Consequently, the three selected posters have much more in common than the winners and finalists featured in previous editions of the contest. For, in addition to meeting the usual selection requirements, it also proposes to discuss the socio2
political scenario of Brazil today and, to that end, make use of similar conceptual assumptions, ending up on very similar formal principles: the image over the text, the visual metaphor as a central element. Two of them were tied for second place: Luan Piani’s poster casts the shadow of a frame - or was it a grid? - on an equally orthogonal modulation floor which, enhanced by the monochrome image, generates a heavy grid overlay. On another hand, the poster created by Guilherme Dorneles and Carolina Gehlen appears, at first glance, as colorful lines turning into a drain to which various shades goes direct down to, the most diverse projects. It is in this playful illusion common to both, in this certain vagueness - spatial in one, directional in the other that resides much of their strength, avoiding overly literal readings, even though they both start from very clear visual metaphors of oppression and, respectively, disenchantment. The poster created by Stephanie Mathias de Souza was recognized as the winner because it adds a subtle possibility of reconstruction to the virtues of the previous pair. Again, we have a more comprehensive commentary articulated through a visual metaphor around a common component artifact of the MCB Award. The difference is that the cracked plate can be understood in a slightly broader interpretive range than the grid or the drain. Not only for the greater polysemy of the object itself when compared to the other two, but also because the disruption may have occurred not only globally (nationally, if you prefer), but also in the poster’s own syntactic field, in its unstained white. The poster art - and what it stands for - may have been broken, too. And if it is no longer possible to mend it - neither through nostalgia for a project of lost modernity, nor with the lazy adoption of improvisation as a virtue such evidence does not cease to work as a pressing starting point. gustavo piqueira

design in BraZil is a relatively reCent aCtivity CoMpared to other professional areas, such as law, medicine and architecture. But over the last decades this general activity, which aims to translate into people’s products, brands and services the desires of people, combining aesthetic refinement, functional care and adaptation to the productive capabilities of manufacturers, has greatly improved in our country. We can already say that Brazil uses design in many cases in the most strategic way, as a fundamental tool for innovation and not just as a process or style. Of course these last two categories are important, but when design plays a role directly linked to business success, designers’ actions have a much greater responsibility. With this in mind, the MCB Design Award, fulfilling its vocation to present an extract of the output of product design in the country, has been throughout its recent editions receiving Design projects also known as classics, in which only form and function must be properly integrated, and at the same time projects of a new design dimension that can unite physical and digital, services as part of experience, new forms of the business model coupled with the product itself, and so on. That is, the world is changing and the Prize, within limits, is being exposed to it all. Our commission in this edition have worked hard to judge products with different approaches to design use, where not only the product itself should be evaluated, but other points of contact it provides to the user before or after the purchase process. Moreover, not even the possession of a product is certain anymore, since temporary use products - and because of this, with specific characteristics for this purpose - have been evaluated. From a total of 512 entries, after the end of the four-day in-person commission process with sixteen jurors, we have sixty-four products that are part of the exhibition. At the opening, the already traditional and very valuable exchange of impressions among the jury and the public, this year, we decided for seventeen winners in the various categories covered by the award. In addition, there are twelve more honorable mentions, for projects that do not reach the qualities required to be awarded, but have the potential to do so. And in this process of exchange among jurors, designers and the public, the Museum once again fulfills its function of democratizing access to what is well designed, spreading people’s thoughts about the needs and desires on the objects around them, in an endless improving process. On the projects themselves, repeating what has been happening in recent editions, the Electronics category has again brought great projects to the Award, showing the ability to create and convert good ideas into good products. Big brands continue to bet on the relevance of the award to collaborate in creating the reputation of their portfolios, in a new moment when only mass communication is no longer enough to talk about the qualities of their launches. The Construction category mixes consumer products with finishing components that have a story to tell about the origin of their raw materials, bringing a new dimension to objects. The classic 33RD DESIGN AWARD MUSEU DA CASA BRASILEIRA
categories of Lighting and Furniture continue to dominate the award in terms of number of entries, in the constructive quality of the selected product extract, despite these categories are still heavily focusing on the products themselves, perhaps even by their nature. But surely they are categories where it is possible to think about new business models, with possible new ways of using products. Transport presents us with a great diversity of uses, technologies and a great concern in the changes of propulsion processes, very connected with what happens around the world. Textiles and Utensils were also very complex categories of analysis for the Commission, due to the diversity of proposals, technologies and value propositions, but which result in excellent examples for public appreciation. In short, the 33rd edition of the Award consolidates Design’s professional maturity in our country and signals clear changes in people’s behavior regarding the way they interact with products. This new moment has received good answers from makers and designers, to a lesser or greater extent, foreshadowing a future scenario of great challenges and huge opportunities. It’s up to us to take advantage of it. levi girardi

José Renato Bicalho Kehl and Tatiana Sakurai Award-winning products selected in the Construction category have diverse but relevant characteristics in the contexts for which they are intended. It is a small but significant set in reaffirming the importance of Design’s role not only in continuous innovation, but also in enhancing and proposing precise interventions on elements already known and existing as typology. In their diversity, they have the very close relationship and daily use of people as a common characteristic, domestic use primarily. From this perspective, the first place stands out, offering a solution that combines good design, intuitive and
functional use. The second place brings its differential in its composition, gathering waste from the construction itself and other residues difficult to handle and disposal with an element from one of the largest socioenvironmental disasters in Brazil, the mud from the Mariana-MG dam. The other awarded and selected coatings and construction elements are the result of intense formal exploration of design and production processes based on traditional know-how.

ELECTRONICS Judging Commission
Lyssandra Macedo and Sidney Rufca The category of Electronics has as relevant issue the approach to technological development and human interaction. In this product segment, the designer has added to his responsibilities the task of facilitating communication among new technologies and the needs of use. Most of the subscribed products belonged to home appliance segment, presenting proposals that integrate design solutions with an intuitive and user-friendly experience. Environmental concerns were present in technological solutions seeking to reduce energy consumption,
optimizing manufacturing processes and the conscious use of materials. Thinking of a bigger number of accessible products with functions that were previously exclusive to higher categories, the attentive eye to the needs of consumers, the educational character, the proposal of open source projects, were also questions that guided the evaluations of the registered projects, aiming at to recognize and encourage designers to create designs with a careful eye to contemporary product development issues.

LIGHTING judging commission
Carlos Fortes and Orlando Marques The diversity of products in the Lighting category demonstrates the breadth of what can be understood as ‘design’. We get to see a range of luminaires designed with a focus on industrial production, and others that represent the creation of unique pieces conceived as art objects or handcrafted products, whose large-scale reproduction would be limited. The finalists, awarded and selected for the exhibition, reflect, however, the understanding of product design based on the vertices of innovation, industrial production, mastery of production techniques and authorial design. Accompanying the lighting industry, with the appropriate use of new generation light sources with LED technology, predominates over products
created on the basis of a previous industry morphology, where traditional lamp shapes placed limits on creation. There is a lack in the representation of predominantly technical products. The concern with sustainability issues is noteworthy, such as the reuse of recycled materials and the conscious use of raw materials. We understand that the current industry landscape, in rapid technological transformation, is well reflected in the variety of proposals presented, highlighting the importance and relevance of constant research and updating, so that the creative gestures of designers corroborate technical, economic, social and preservation issues.

FURNITURE Judging Commission
André Poppovic, Luciana Martins, Mara Gama and Sergio Fahrer The Furniture category of this 33rd edition of the MCB Design Award, as in other previous editions, was the one with the highest number of entries. Perhaps this is because there is a strong identity link between this award and the Furniture category, already expressed in the various posters that used the chair as a symbolic element to synthesize all the others. Or perhaps it is because of the proximity that all of us urban beings, designers especially, have with this category of objects. They are part of the life of all citizens and occupy a very present place in our daily lives, which, besides meeting the functional needs (such as ergonomics, comfort, lightness, economy, sustainability,
Alpha Table 7
productivity, etc.) and aesthetics (as shape, proportion, materiality, colors and others), are also present in the symbolic and subjective universe of our imagination. These needs of the soul seek in everyday objects that orbit around us, whether at home, at work or at leisure, a form of materialization of our essence and become the extension of our own form, to resignify our identity and confer a qualitative differential to the way we inhabit the spaces. Emphasising issues of this nature, this commission shed light on some specific, subtle and very significant aspects in the furniture chosen to represent this crop of the 2018/19 Brazilian furniture output.

TEXTILES judging commission
Clarisse Romeiro and Débora Carammaschi political and political character, without neglecting the essential practical and aesthetic elements of design. The Textile category received an expressive set of projects award, with variations and solutions approximate to the context of what has been trodden by contemporary Brazilian design, consolidating purposes for national identity. In the final selection of products they configured elements connected to current reality and with contributions to surface design, sustainability solutions and the use of technology for disposal generated by the industry. Notably, the presence and resignification of less aggressive processes and with intense interaction in craft production.
The Textile category of the MCB Design Award comes in a growing number of entries each year, with projects that explore textile design in different ways: material research, yarn composition and its possible wefts; exploration of surface design and use of fabric as a support; dyeing studies; reuse of textile waste; textile applications in the field of fashion and decoration. Aware of the responsibility and importance of textile design as a relevant communication tool, we of the judging commission have established some criteria for evaluating the submitted projects, so that the set of awarded works stands out primarily for the content and concern of a sociocultural,

Indaiá Militão and Olavo Aranha and cultural opportunities. The varied geographical, cultural and economic condition imposes important demands on production. The consumer is looking for alternatives, and producers are gradually offering new solutions. From a glider to a water board to cars, boats and bicycles, it shows how wide our production is: from mass to niche we have very interesting demands and offers. The final selection was concerned with a show of current production even if not all equipment is excellent; the aim was to present diversity, originality and the extent of Brazilian Design.
The transport equipment competing for this edition’s Award showed the wide range of activity of our designers working both in Brazil and abroad. We received a certain predominance of leisure and sports products, but also industrial equipment and vehicles. As in previous editions, human traction and distancing from fossil fuels were present. We also receive integrated systems that seek to take advantage of new automation and IoT technologies. Current production shows the latent concern for safety, improved efficiency, systemic integration arising from new technological

UTENSILS Judging Commission
Barão Di Sarno and Gerson Lessa Design has the very real possibility of helping to facilitate work and leisure tasks equally. All everyday tasks can always be optimized, no matter how small they are. It is often only when interference is made to these activities through new tools that we notice, by contrast, how the task had poorly resolved or amenable aspects. The designer must be aware of these interference potentials, often facing and contradicting old traditions or habits. Questioning
the habit is a role for which the designer must always be ready. Reinventing the wheel is a complex task, but minor interference can make a big difference for any audience, small or large. The Utensils category of this award seeks precisely to look at these possibilities of interference in the small tasks and needs of everyday life, a field with wide possibilities for design and industry.

Through 3D printing, a template is used to define the pattern. The chromatic composition, which alludes to the geological strata of cliffs and sedimentary formations, and the visual recording of the artisan’s gestural movement present in the pieces, deserve to be highlighted. Each piece has a unique design, although all can fit side by side to form a continuous linear pattern.

LIGHTING 1ST PLACE (DRAW) u.f.o Author: Fernando Prado Produced by: Lumini São Paulo, SP The design of the lamps caught the jury’s imagination unanimously. Inspired by the flying saucer universe, the family is made up of table lamp, floor lamp and two pendant sizes, which attributes are consistently repeated. We emphasize the simplicity and elegance of the design and its thematic inspiration manifested in their shapes. In table and floor versions, the disc-shaped dome is swivelable around the stem, with the maximum angle set precisely. The light source is controlled by a tiny anti-glare grid that gradually spreads over its surface. 1ST PLACE (DRAW) duna Authors: Domingos Pascali, Sarkis Semerdjian Produced by: Lumini São Paulo, SP Table lamps explore in a new and creative way the mechanical control of the intensity of light emitted, using grains of sand in this process. The economy of materials (aluminum and acrylic), which together make up the opaque-translucent binomial, combined with the simplicity of the geometric form (a circumference), results in a playful luminaire, which brings in its essence unconscious references to the passage of time, in a free association to hourglasses. Using sand as a “mechanical dimmer” and the perfect operation of the system through the free handling of the lamp reveal the special attention when manufactering it and the expertise in choosing the light source.
31
3RD PLACE Urban Light Author: Roberta Banqueri Office: Pontoeu Produced by: Indústria de Móveis Martina São Paulo, SP This fixture stands out for its objective design and composition, as well as the unusual combination of materials such as wood, soapstone and metal. The piece is composed of a beveled tip, light source dug in a wood cylinder and a metal or stone base. There are two possibilities for its installation, vertically, when seated in the stone base, or inclined with support in the metal base and with the bevel anchored on the wall. The direction of the tubular lamp diffuse light can be rotated completely in both support possibilities.
HONORABLE MENTION Piano Line Author: Ricardo Heder Office: Lux Projetos Produced by: Reka Iluminação São Paulo, SP The line of reading lamps, wall or floor, revisits the design and function of luminaires with articulated rods, adding to the product the advantages of using LED. The small domes are attached to very thin rigid rods, allowing them a variety of lengths and easy-to-handle joints. These features and the consequent lightness of the lamps make the product versatile for use in different compositions. The mechanical articulation system allows focus adjustment without internal twisting of the power cord, which enhances the versatility of the product.
HONORABLE MENTION ABJ10 Author: Ricardo Fahl de Oliveira Produced by: OmegaLight São Paulo, SP The witty design small lamp combines form and functionality with low production cost. Production optimization is achieved by using steel as the sole material and by its docking system. The table lamp is made up of a conical dome and a body made of bent plate, which limits eye contact with the light source and holds the socket. The size of the base allows the reflection of soft effect light.
HONORABLE MENTION Wé Light Author: Dimitrih Correa Office: Dimitrih Correa Bespoke Atelier Rio de Janeiro, RJ Wé fixture proposes the practical fixation of the lamp by a magnetic system, by means of a magnet located in the body of the luminaire and a metal prismatic base, which receives the fixture in different positions and can also be supported in different ways. It can also be fixed to other metal surfaces, regardless of the base that makes up the system. Although the fixture and orientation system of lamps by means of magnets is not unprecedented, the set is versatile and harmonious in the combination of reused wood and metal components.

SELECTED MQA-HS-P AND MQA-HS-M Authors: Gustavo Gatti Casagrande, Maneco Quinderé, Vitor Ferrari Office: Maneco Quinderé Produced by: Cativa Iluminação São Paulo, SP The table and floor lamps duo are each made up of a circular base, cylindrical shank and conical aluminum dome with brass accents. The pieces have a simple and clean design that allows the typologies to be scaled in a harmonic way, as well as a meticulous finishing. The adjustable dome makes it possible to control the intensity of the light source. SELECTED Beacon Prism Author: Lucas Bittar Produced by: Vira Iluminação São Paulo, SP The self-supporting beacon has a solid polymeric concrete body and offers weather resistance, including salt spray. Its design and dimensions allow it to be built-in masonry walls in the concrete or ceramic block module. The light is reflected by the inner faces of the beacon, which illuminates the floor directly.
32
SELECTED Boushi Lamp – table lamp Authors: Noemi Saga, Fernando Ikeda Office: Noemi Saga Atelier Produced by: Móveis Schuster Ltda São Paulo, SP A The table lamp harmoniously combines domes of different materials with a beveled and turned wood base with different finishing coats. The versatility of the dimmable dome, which can be made of either translucent (rice paper, milky acrylic) or opaque (sheet metal, wood veneer) materials, is the main virtue of this lamp. The choice of light source (E27 based LED bulb) with the socket embedded in the wooden base corroborates the versatile character of the luminaire, although it limits the exploration of integrated light sources to the base.
1ST PLACE Alpha Table 7 Authors: Lourenço Urbano Gimenes, Fernando Forte, Rodrigo Marcondes Ferraz, Gabriel De la Cruz Mota Office: FGMF Arquitetos São Paulo, SP Alpha 7 table provokes the viewer’s eye. The large top seems to float, with its almost 7ft diameter, supported by thin steel tubes. The thin thickness edge of this worktop is the result of the choice for Ductal concrete, which is lighter than traditional concrete and which differs in that it does not require an internal metal frame. Another striking point of the piece is that the supporting steel tubes cross the top, forming an asymmetrical design on the table surface. The choice of concrete and steel also allows Alpha 7 to be used indoors and outdoors. 2ND PLACE BEL CHAIR Authors: Lourenço Urbano Gimenes, Fernando Forte, Rodrigo Marcondes Ferraz, Gabriel De la Cruz Mota Office: FGMF Arquitetos Produced by: Tramontina Belém SA São Paulo, SP The clear design, lightness of the structure and the original fit of the wooden parts on the seat and back are the most striking features of the Bel chair. The seating comfort and low end price make it an outstanding example in the versatile chair category, as it can be used for dining and office tables. The backrest detail, which can be used as a handle for hanging towels, is a great addition for use in hotels.
FURNITURE 3RD PLACE Desk Désqui Author: Fernando Prado Produced by: Dpot São Paulo, SP The constructive elements of this piece are not obvious. The feet are cylinders of solid wood fixed out of the area of the tabletop and not in the four corners as in a common table. Tearing in the top and drawer is also an interesting solution to solve the wiring issue of electronics and light fixtures. The drawer hides the wires and they run from one foot to the floor. And the drawers, being very low, fit well into the top, going almost unnoticed. These elements give the piece delicacy, which can be used in many places in the house, extrapolating the desk stereotype. HONORABLE MENTION PINHIM Author: Bruno Rangel Produced by: Dpot São Paulo, SP The piece has a beautiful and light proportion, winning the gap intelligently. It has a very clean design and overlays an indigenous pattern with the natural wood weft, creating a third pattern. This overlapping pattern is subtly done, with thin, almost invisible lines: at first glance, it just seems that the wood design is unclear. Another interesting detail is the design of the door lock handles, which refers to Japanese culture.
33
HONORABLE MENTION Cama NoMad Author: Fernando Diehl Office: STUDIOFDHL Produced by: Yellow Cube São Paulo, SP The NoMad Bed is a smart and well-resolved product in its category. The system of tensioned and interlaced straps, besides forming its platform, ensures to keep the furniture lock and creates an interesting finishing detail. The feet, made up of four black bent-plate low shoes, complete the functionalist look of the product, providing stability and tying the integrity of the product. SELECTED TAPIOCA Author: Adalfan da Silva Bessa Filho Produced by: Estilo Básico Marcenaria Profissional Fortaleza, CE The small dimensions, smooth finish and innovative mobility of the piece are the fundamental characteristics pointed out by the members of the commission. Counting on just a pair of wheels, this is not a cart, because it can not carry objects, but occupies the function of a small mobile buffet. A handle that comes off the support foot makes it easy to move to different locations needing additional support in the house. SELECTED Niva Chairs Line Authors: Francisco José Trucharte, Nivaldo Natal Produced by: Metaltru Porto Feliz, SP In the outdoor furniture segment, such as gardens and balconies, the Niva chair and armchair stood out for their design, lightness and comfortable proportions. The fact that they are demountable added quality to the line.
SELECTED Carambela Armchair Authors: Murilo Linhares, Vitor Ramos Produced by: FITTO Design Curitiba, PR The Armchair Carambela uses a sophisticated design and very well resolved for a product type that was commonly found on websites and blogs of furniture on the Internet. It stands out precisely for its ingenious mounting solution, through sliding rails and machined fittings in CNC equipment from a digital file, which after its intricate construction, results in a comfortable, rigid and organic-shaped piece that accommodates well the body. A good graphical solution creates the part differential that receives several direct fingerprint patterns on plywood. SELECTED Ella Chair Author: Jader Almeida Office: jaderalmeida design & architecture Produced: SOLLOS Florianópolis, SC The Ella chair utilizes the machined metal frame with an oxidation treatment. The backrest interconnects with the arms forming a single piece, the result of mechanical machining, revealing precise fittings. The piece has excellent ergonomics as well as technical refinement in finishing and confection.
FURNITURE SELECTED Luisa Chair Authors: Flavio Borsato, Mauricio Lamosa Office: estudiobola Produced by: Indústria de Móveis Rizzon São Paulo, SP Luisa has as its main attribute the shell-shaped tapestry, a result obtained through techniques borrowed from the shoe industry. The backrest is flexible and molds according to the user. The structure is made of solid jequitibá (Lecythidaceae) wood and assembled manually with dowels and glue. SELECTED Hortolino Vegetable Garden Cart Authors: Mariana Betting Ferrarezi, Roberto Hercowitz Office: emDoïsdesign Rio de Janeiro, RJ Hortolino is a simple and aesthetically discreet solution for growing small plants in confined spaces. The ability to receive multiple vessels, the presence of a drawer for excess water and its mobility are features that give the piece practicality.
34
SELECTED Flora Table Authors: Oswaldo Correa Mellone, Fernanda Cristina Marques Produced by: Nova Sig Serviços de Montagem São Paulo, SP The coffee table is formed by a series of radial buds with curved outer edges, structured so that there is a short distance among each. The set is supported underneath, with bent steel legs unnoticed as they are hidden by the top in an elegant and enigmatic manner. The piece reminds us of a water lily, for its shape and size, or a giant daisy for the white color of its petals. The result is lightweight, organic and it has a detail that incorporates a small asymmetrically fitted vase so that a personal touch can be added to the decor of the room. SELECTED Click Activity Set Authors: Karina Schrappe Sucre, Eduardo Sucre Office: Noos São Paulo, SP This table and chairs change height in an easy and fun way. Therefore, it is possible to keep using it in different stages of the child’s development process. The set is designed for children from 9 months to 8 years old. Expanders are attached to the chairs and table legs creating a coherent set along with the chair back and seat. The construction, with its apparent fittings using two different wood colors, enhances the playfulness of the pieces.
SELECTED N Coisas Authors: Sergio Luiz Stark Aroeira, Juliana Stark Cavalcante Ramos Office: Stark Studio Produced by: Mobi Industrial LTDA Belo Horizonte, MG From a module made of wood it is possible to create pieces of different functions and sizes. The module consists of three pieces that are fitted into a screwed bar. You can make a self-supporting screen with different widths and heights, a side table, a bench. We find the concept of this piece interesting and very challenging: a single element that when replicated can turn into countless shapes and consequently countless functions. SELECTED Tear Chair Authors: Lourenço Urbano Gimenes, Fernando Forte, Rodrigo M. Ferraz, Gabriel De la Cruz Mota Office: FGMF Arquitetos Produced by: Butzke São Paulo, SP The solution found for the construction of the seat and back of the Tear chair was the application of nautical rope strands, which intersect in the meeting of the weft, as the threads in a loom. The structure, built with Tauari solid wood, shows all its fittings, revealing the design of the piece.
TEXTILES 1ST PLACE Botânica Author: Nara Evangeline Guichon Ferrari Florianópolis, SC From the wide variety of plant species found in Brazilian biodiversity comes the so called Botânica collection. Botânica is a collection of 5 flags made using a 100% manual stamping technique, which uses the quality of the vegetables to make them. The printed elements are traces of the leaves, flowers and roots that naturally dye the wool fabric, from the process known as botanical printing. It is a solid project that stands out for reinforcing aspects of cultural knowledge, showing concern for the environment in all stages of production, and that does not run over stages of the creative process. In addition, it presents a result of high aesthetic sophistication and with visible mastery of the technique, with poetic and striking combinations of shapes and colors. 2ND PLACE Mareando Author: Nara Evangeline Guichon Ferrari Florianópolis, SC Mareando stands out for being a project with environmental and social concern, which explores the quality of the polyamide, the resistant material of fishing nets, abandoned in the oceans to build new wefts. “The number of abandoned ghost fishing nets in the oceans is alarming because the average discard of this raw material is 640,000 tonnes a year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States.” The final product is a brAssistantd rug using the knitting technique, with a difference in the use of colors dyed with yerba mate, turmeric and iron filings. The commercialization of the product minimizes maritime environmental 35
waste and contributes to the increase of family income for fishing communities. HONORABLE MENTION ECO Metalasse Authors: Lorena Andrade V. Beldi, Laura Andrade Vieira Office: LLAS Produced by: LLAS Confecção de Roupas Sorocaba, SP “ECO Metalasse” reopens the discussion based on the reuse and conscious consumption of textiles, and stands out for the unusual way of working with small and irregular pieces of fabrics that are largely discarded by the fashion industry. Strategically and carefully designed, it utilizes the matelassé technique by constructing two layers of fabrics, sewn in parallel strips along the entire length of its surface which are then manually filled with fabric residue in varying colors and textures - linen , cotton, viscose, silk, polyamide and polyester - creating a padded surface that has thermal insulation characteristics. It is a project that invokes the textile industry about the need to transform and change from a linear manufacturing model to a circular economy model. SELECTED Vestígio Cutâneo Author: Maria Matos; Mentor Professor: Andressa Nobrega Educational Institution: Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado São Paulo, SP We can’t erase our history. Scars, marks, and personal records are the inspiration for the “Vestígio Cutâneo”, a hand-crafted fabric created from an unforeseen material - the hospital latex tube - through crochet technique. A varied use of needles and a combination of
stitches, which resemble the fabric construction of a mesh, it is a project that welcomes the time in its construction and emphasizes the importance of a teaching that crosses generations. The final product considers sustainability and deserves research and consumer suitability, such as the use for various coatings given the strength, weight and durability. SELECTED Xinil Coat 100% cotton - yarns hand dyed from natural extracts Authors: Maria Flávia Montans Aranha, Central Veredas Produced by: Flávia Aranha Comércio e Confecção São Paulo, SP The Xinil Coat handcrafted from beginning to end by women of the Central Veredas institution, is a project that has added value by showing concern for the creation of textiles. It emerges as a conceptual proposal inspired by the “xinil”, a kind of traditional blanket woven in manual loom for horse saddles. The result of the product stems from the organization of the solidarity network of women in northwestern Minas Gerais, aiming to value the artisanal experience and the maintenance of tradition. The creative process and textile design considered production stages - from harvesting and cotton spinning - as well as using the redwood and saffron strata for natural dyeing. It is noteworthy that the product promotes countless possibilities with various developments on other surfaces and creative objects.
TRANSPORT 1ST PLACE QR-15 Larus Glider Author: Quintino Romagna Filho Sinop, MT To fly is to achieve a dream. For those who have had the experience of gliding on a modern, quiet and beautiful equipment, being able to do so with a product designed and built in Brazil is even more enjoyable. Sailing is a sport, and it makes several contributions to professional research activities. New unmanned aircraft with very high glide rates are being investigated, some with the ability to fly constantly without the need to refuel. The glider that was presented to the MCB Design Award is a well-designed equipment, elegant and with excellent capacity in its sport class. Done with a relatively low cost, it will allow more practitioners to have access to the sport. Although it is a niche sport, there is an important market, especially for its perpetuity. Sailing lovers do not switch sports easily, and many become professionals in engineering, maintenance and piloting. Utilizing high performance techniques and materials, the QR-15 offers us new design and execution concepts, thus updating the fleet available to practitioners. HONORABLE MENTION WM Motor EX-6 Limited Full Electric SUV Authors: Leandro Trovati Maciel, Rodrigo de Araújo Oliveira Produced by: Aplus Idiada São Paulo, SP This SUV has two important features: being electric and geared towards the Chinese market. This gives rise to some issues to be addressed. One is the need for this growing market to adapt to environmental requirements; China has recently come to impose very strict rules after suffering internal and external
36
pressures. On the other hand, one can see small nuances derived from this segment in a market that is beginning to acquire a certain maturity and identity. Much of what is developed in China resonates strongly with European and North American models. With the rise of a large consumer class, industry is seeking more authenticity and autonomy. The EX-6 goes in this direction, probing possibilities to differentiate itself from the Germans and the Japanese. The work done by the designers in this project has much of the Brazilian look in the details that print this vehicle today. The optical ensemble talks with Italian-Brazilian products, while the silhouette brings us to the Germans. Designers’ versatility is evident by fully meeting the demands of the China market. HONORABLE MENTION WoW Author: Wilson Meneguci Junior Presidente Prudente, SP Walking on water is an idea that fascinates man. It is present in ancestral histories and traditions of many peoples who live near seas and rivers. The product called Wow proposes a new way of doing it: a rotomolded polyethylene float whose shapes were borrowed from the ichthyological fauna. It also bears similarities to other sports equipment such as catamarans and skateboards, but its proposal is less athletic and more playful, contemplative; allowing users to not use their hands to perform their ride. Propulsion is done with leg movements, and since the equipment does not depend on the speed to rise, as is the case with hydrofoil alternatives that do not float, anyone can have fun without great training or effort. The technology employed and the material are very suitable for the
purpose, they keep costs low, allow a certain scale of production, require almost no maintenance and offer a huge range of colors. This is not the first version of this equipment to compete for the award and the commission acknowledged the proposed improvements: Wow is more beautiful and attractive now. However, it was observed that there are still opportunities for improvement. The relation among the fittings could be more integrative; the absence of an element that facilitated the handling by a single person was noted; as well as better positioning of hydrofoils. It would be interesting if the equipment offered a watertight box for storing small objects, a water bottle etc. Similarly, its shape could better take advantage of rotational molding with more expressive and assertive lines in its style. SELECTED e-MTB Pagotti Authors: Fabio Pagotti Silva, Ana Paula Sanchez Produced by: Pagotti São Paulo, SP Pagotti e-MTB delivers what it proposes: an assisted mountain bike with a balanced set with agile geometry without ignoring comfort. Its 6061 aluminum frame has a well-inclined top tube, which allows for a lot of versatility, both in pedaling type, for example in a steeper downhill as well as in the rider’s height range. Because the electric motor and battery are incorporated into the frame design, its appearance retains the typical mountain sportiness. The detail of the battery compartment is very good, there are no unwanted spaces or vibrations, the system is tightly sealed and the key prevents theft of a costly component. However, the placement to plug the charger could
be better located and signaled; its place is always subject to a lot of dirt and difficult to see. The set and components chosen are well balanced, with very high quality imported and domestic parts. Its semi-handcrafted production has great workmanship and shows good attention to detail. The assisted engine offers a surprising start, when riding flat paths the user will not notice much difference, but braking it requires some attention; its 350W will allow the less prepared to keep up with the strongest kids on the longest runs and climbs. SELECTED Bisão Authors: Thiago Busato Mendonça, Artur Tessaro Leal, Dante Luigi Zaniratto, Antonio Genitori Neto, Fernando Casado Office: Solúvel Design Produced by: Pro Solus do Brasil Maringá, PR Brazilian agriculture and its equipment are among the country’s priorities. We have excellent research centers and are exporters with international recognition. In many areas we are very competitive. Thus, it is a good opportunity to show that design can and should contribute to our industry not being limited to commodities. The agricultural implement selected for the exhibition allows us to have good design interference as well as to note that there are many opportunities. The overall design of the equipment is pleasant and delivers values such as robustness and strong identity, making excellent use of the technical possibilities offered by rotational molding. Details in shape, curves, friezes and texture contribute to the good mechanical and aesthetic evaluation of wash and load tanks. However, the delivered model leaves some gaps such as the
37
absence of a protective cowling to prevent the equipment from being excessively exposed to inclement weather, sunlight, etc. As with operator-equipment relations, our commission identified opportunities for improving signaling and arrangement of controls and dials. SELECTED Chica Author: Ricardo Martins Ferreira Produced by: Urbana Bicicletas São Paulo, SP Chica is the name of this bicycle designed and produced for the Federal University of Acre. This is exactly why it was selected for the exhibition. This equipment is functional, economical, honest: it demonstrates that Brazil is a broad and ambitious territory, seeking to update itself within its possibilities and in a practical, correct manner. Created to meet the demands of students, professors and university staff, it follows the same guidelines as those in São Paulo or Paris. With an attached locking system, locator and solar plate, it eliminates the use of docks and increases modal range. Technical issues that give good usability for the general public, the presence of a basket for small loads, wide adjustment of the seat height, low top tube that allows the use of a skirt, small wheels, which, although not contributing to rolling over, offer more robustness to the set, which still has mudguards and current protection. Simple design that contributes to improving the quality of life.
UTENSILS 2ND PLACE (DRAW) Alquimia Author: Carl Kawasaki Maringá, PR It is always gratifying to see that design will always have room to reinvent common products that have been part of our daily lives for so long. This requires keen observation and great research skills. Unlike the rest of the family of pliers, the cuticle one has a peculiarity: it needs precision rather than strength. This project breaks with the category archetype in search of a design that prioritizes fine handling over rough handling. From this finding, the designer was able to achieve a formal resolution that combines its functionality with strong aesthetic appeal, which has the potential to create a new identity for its category. 2ND PLACE (DRAW) Chimafácil Mate Feeder Authors: Fabricio Augusto Kipper, Saulo Padoin Chielle Produced by: Chimafácil Ltda Novo Hamburgo, RS There is special merit when the designer is able to create a new product rather than redesigning the existing ones, especially when this product is in fact able to make life easier for users. Chimarrão preparation requires skill and this is part of the tradition. However, this difficulty may drive new consumers away. Chimafácil feeder facilitates preparation for beginners. This product raises important questions about how design can/should meet the challenge of the new as opposed to habit and tradition.

3RDPLACE Coleção Nulo Authors: Robson Tomoki Hamasaki, Lawson Daiki Hamasaki Produced by: Lunethier São Paulo, SP The production of wooden spectacle frames is based on the effort to rethink the dependence on the use of plastic materials, so evident today, but also the possibility of greater customization and differentiation in the shape and perception of this object, external and, at the same time, so intimate, from the user’s point of view. The elegance of the shapes, the noble materials and the impeccable finishing suggest a sophisticated audience, looking for personal objects that can demonstrate their personality. SELECTED ExyOne Shoulder Authors: Valkiria Pedri Fialkowski, Daniel Kroker Office: ARBO design Produced by: Exy Innovation Company Curitiba, PR The product is designed to relieve muscle strain in jobs that require uncomfortable positions in industrial production or maintenance activities, focusing primarily on ergonomic and safety concerns of the design. This field is a never-ending source of design challenges, given the immense variety of activities that are potentially harmful to workers’ well-being, and which certainly deserve greater investment and effort from industry and product designers in the country.
SELECTED Exata Thermal Teapot Authors: Elisa Milan Tramontina, Gustavo Couto Giorgi Office: Design Único Produced by: Tramontina Farroupilha S/A Porto Alegre, RS The product is an upgrade of the traditional thermos, with simple and functional shapes. Its greatest merit lies in precisely this simplicity, which distances it from the more refined typologies, usually found in the market. Its metallic body gives strength and material solidity. SELECTED Cookware Perfil Authors: Elisa Milan Tramontina, Gustavo Couto Giorgi Office: Design Único Produced by: Tramontina Farroupilha S/A Porto Alegre, RS A product with simple, objective and imposing design that brings the visual reading of a robust and practical object, giving the consumer the conviction of safety during its handling. Its aesthetics is able to dialogue with young audiences and, at the same time, value the tradition of the brand.
SELECTED Youme Mirror Author: Dimi Yukihiko Kuroki Office: Studio Dup São Paulo, SP This beautiful, almost sculptural object literally presents a set of mirrors that multiplies, given its geometric construction, the views that the mirror can show. Constructed as two intersecting bases, the mirrors surprise us by giving us two views of ourselves: the expected, inverted, and the other, reverse, which show us two views of ourselves, causing at first a curious and amusing confusion, which turns out to be useful in its purpose of showing us multiple views of ourselves. Its shape and finishing confirm us the object character beyond the functional: artistic. SELECTED Salad Cutlery Author: Silvia Grilli São Paulo, SP This product stands out from its competitors for the beauty of design and execution. Its aesthetics explores the possibilities of using reforestation woods in the country. The production process of the pieces is semi automated and combines traditional woodworking techniques and individual finishing with natural wax. SELECTED LUG Author: Rodolpho Guttierrez Produced by: Boulle Curitiba, PR This product happily adds to its functional look with its sophisticated aesthetics, materiality and finish. The beauty of wood and the solidity of steel give stability and credibility, fundamental elements of a product that, for its purpose and operation, needs to guarantee and communicate safety to the consumer. 39
SELECTED Tutti Frutti Fruit Bowl Author: Fernando Prado Produced by: Dpot São Paulo, SP This beautiful sculptural object has, besides its practical function, the interest that its materiality, finish and solidity express. Not least, playfulness is present in the kinetic characteristic that the basic shape gives to the sphere, capable of orbiting the central hole in a truly surprising and hypnotic manner. These aesthetic and interactive features eventually override the practical use originally proposed, being its richer aspect. SELECTED Cane T Author: Álvaro Wolmer Produced by: Álvaro Wolmer Movelaria Fina São Paulo, SP Finishing and fine woods update the traditional cane object, which appears in a sophisticated and updated version. The smooth finish and integrated shape guarantee almost fetishistic tactile pleasure, associating the concrete need with the material and perceptive value it evokes.
WRITTEN WORKS Design’s plurality is illustrated in all the works exhibited in the category of Written Works on this 33rd edition of the MCB Design Award. Historical rescues, creative processes, design practices and experiences, provocations, questions, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity permeate the subjects dealt with in the books and thesis presented. And they prove that, despite all the difficulties that researchers and design professionals face in making their research and projects viable, they further stimulate the creative process, critical thinking, deep reflection and thus enrich the body of work and provide dialogues that contribute to the consolidation of Design. The first two places attributed to each of the two modalities of the category express the wide repertoire inherent to Design’s field, which needs to be explored and discussed. Among the academic works, the doctoral thesis Pandemonium: creative process, experimentation and chance, besides presenting an exquisite graphic project, establishes a dialogue between the theoretical aspects of creation processes and methods along with the practice of the author himself, as well of interviewed designers. The text proposes a reflection on the way of seeing and practicing creation in design, instigates the academic canons and contributes to contemporary design questions in the area. The master’s thesis Remembering me: therapeutic products and services for the prevention and rehabilitation of Alzheimer’s disease in institutionalized elderly is a research that highlights the transdisciplinary action of design, in this case, considering the health area. With a modern and significant theme, the researcher carries out a social approach, in which she seeks to develop, through a participatory methodological process, products and services related to design for the prevention and rehabilitation of Alzheimer’s disease in institutionalized elderly. It is a contribution that exposes how design can and should interrelate with areas of other fields of knowledge. The 2nd place was awarded to the doctoral thesis DIM - Design Inova Moda: design process model with emphasis on innovativeness for the garment sector, which corroborates the systemic character of design and discusses the possibility for the path of innovation and competitiveness of fashion companies with innovativeness from Design Science Research with the DIM methodology. Still in this modality of unpublished works, six honorable mentions were attributed to researches that as they stood out in the group, they foster and raise developments. In the published works category, the 1st place was awarded to two works that deal in the context of graphic design in different ways. One, is the result of a research carried out by research networks on graphic memory and works resulting from a FAU – USP postgraduate discipline, “Graphic Memory and Material Culture”, Ten essays on graphic memory, which conceptually discusses the term and its correlation with visual culture, collective memory and the history of graphic design and starts the dialogue with articles that can compose a representative panorama of the diversity and richness of different objects of study, analytical strategies and interpretations around printed editions from our graphic and cultural circle. The four fascicles composing the work Private Printer Collection have a bold purpose emphasising on the

printing process and the graphic construction of an authorial discourse, each of the books brings a theme related to creators and unknown works that shed light to stimulate academic and editorial debate through events, studies, seminars, researches, exercises and practical activities. The 2nd place was awarded to an astonishing work that stands out for the biographical rescue performed by undergraduate students of the Design and Culture Research Group of the Federal University of Sergipe, culminating in the bilingual publication of the work Cândido de Faria: an illustrator of the arts from Sergipe, about an artist of intense and relevant national and international production. The two outstanding works with honorable mentions contribute in the scope of the research of materials for the construction of the creative economy and in the historical rescue of design from Minas Gerais; both enrich and promote dialogues for design practice, teaching and research. teresa riccetti

PUBLISHED WRITTEN WORKS 1ST PLACE (DRAW) Ten essays on graphic memory Authors: Marcos Da Costa Braga, Priscila Lena Farias (orgs.) Publishing Company: Blucher São Paulo, SP This work presents a selection of essays that bring together a diversity of study objects - books, newspapers, ads, brands and branding systems, lettering, album covers - and methodological strategies, composing a representative overview of research and the value of pointing out our material culture. We highlight the valuable contribution of the introductory text, in which the authors, besides presenting the state of the art of graphic memory in Brazil and Latin America, conceptually discuss the term, as well as characteristics and specificities on this aspect of design studies. The essays share interests and methods with other fields, such as visual culture, print culture, material culture, the history of graphic design, and collective memory. This multiplicity of views contributes both to the understanding of the field and the professional practice of Design, as well as to the expansion of knowledge about Brazilian graphic design, and also to its appreciation. 1ST PLACE (DRAW) Private Printer Collection Author: Gustavo Piqueira Publishing Company: Lote 42 São Paulo, SP The four-volume collection has an emphasis on the printing process and the graphic construction of an authorial discourse. Its purpose is not to direct tastes, but to stimulate each person in the elaboration of their particular graphic canon. Each of the books presents a group of editorial experiences that excel in originality and boldness; the forays into the fields of literature, history, and art, provided by Gustavo Piqueira in the texts, 48
are used to contextualize and clarify the peculiarities of the material and the authors chosen by him for each book of this collection, making reading enjoyable, full of suggestions and curiosities that broaden the interest in Design and generate new insights for future approaches with the material, given its uniqueness. 2ND PLACE Cândido de Faria: An illustrator of the applied arts from Sergipe Authors: Germana Gonçalves Araujo, Beatriz Góis Dantas, Rafael Cardoso, Norberto Gaudêncio, Stéphanie Salmon, Beatriz Matos de Carvalho, Jean Carvalho Santos, Cybelle Nascimento Guilherme Publishing Company: UFS Aracaju, SE The bilingual publication, Portuguese/French, is the result of studies by the Design and Culture Research Group, of the Graphic Design Undergraduate Course of the Federal University of Sergipe, which made an important rescue of the biography of Cândido de Faria, who worked on applied arts, creating an intense and relevant production. of design education in the state, which began in the 1960s at UMA. (Minas Gerais University of Art), current UEMG; These findings seek to illuminate the development of design outside Rio-São Paulo route. Therefore, the publication presents data that may raise new discussions and reflections around Design’s knowledge. SELECTED Architecture is Belonging Authors: Fernando Brandão, Elina Zhon Publishing Company: DeTao Group São Paulo, SP The silent ritual to unveil the opening of the object refers to the Oriental culture, kept as a jewel, in the cube-box that keeps the microbook, the work is physically and visually heavy for its size. This object book brings punctual reflections on architecture, city and modernity, besides the five essential principles for the future of design, according to the author: accessibility (inclusion); connectivity (between technology and people); sustainability, identity (foundations, values and habits) and humanity (perception and consciousness). The iconographic documentation offers discrete doses of Fernando Brandão’s vast and diverse work as an architect, interior designer, publicist and graphic designer. SELECTED Gregori Warchavchik Author: Jayme Vargas Publishing Company: Olhares São Paulo, SP The work addresses biographical aspects of the architect from the perspective of Design; As an extension of the configuration of the interior space of their dwellings, Warchavchik designed emblematic furniture and lamps for Brazilian modernism. This book documents and disseminates the memory of a 49
pioneering work to the history of design in Brazil, the iconography is rich and includes chronologically organized photographic records, added to sketches of the architect himself. SELECTED Amaria Design and Cooperation Authors: Alice Penna e Costa, Christiana Carvalho, Ayrton Bicudo Publishing Company: Auana São Paulo, SP The editorial proposal consistently exposes Amaria’s 15-year production and performance in the region of Muzambinho, Minas Gerais, involved in the narrative construction of the knowledge dialogues, established by designer Mayumi Ito, between Brazil and Japan, and configured through local and global relevant artisanal work. It is an affective compilation that, in a way, arouses attention for future research on the theme and connects with the emerging demands on the rethinking of the place of handicrafts on fashion and design. SELECTED Amnesia Memory: Politics of Forgetting Author: Giselle Beiguelman Publishing Company: Sesc São Paulo São Paulo, SP Verb-visual essay, in five “tenses”, about the paths and lanes of memory and forgetting among us. The theme is contemporary and brings up the problem of urban waste and disposal, furniture, junk mail and forgotten public statues. They are works of urban intervention, with photographic documentation, constituting two layers of narratives - verbal and visual; although we work with very flexible borders in contemporary times, the work discusses issues pertinent to the field of design, art and aesthetics in a poetic and critical way.
SELECTED Percival Lafer: Design, indústria e mercado Author: Jayme Vargas Publishing Company: Olhares São Paulo, SP The book presents Percival Lafer’s career as a professional added to the story and consolidation of the Lafer company, based in São Paulo. The work reveals interesting approaches to design, manufacture and marketing adopted by the company, and its relationship with different social, economic and political contexts that the country went through. It is a great contribution from primary sources to the history of the furniture industry and national design, bringing together a significant set of drawings of Lafer’s projects as the head of his own company. SELECTED Exhibition Architecture: Lina Bo Bardi and Gisela Magalhães Author: César Augusto Sartorelli Publishing Company: Sesc São Paulo São Paulo, SP This publication is important both for recording the history of Brazilian expography and for understanding the complexity and interdisciplinarity of this type of project. The work explains these characteristics by comparing the conceptions and design processes of exhibition spaces by architects Lina Bo Bardi and Gisela Magalhães in deep theoretical reflection and supported by interviews with members of their teams, as well as important documentation in drawings and photographs, an unprecedented document retrieval when it comes to Gisela Magalhães.
