Creating a community around art ►►►►

►►►

As we prepare for a new season, my final as your Ann and Graham Gund Director, I am grateful for the opportunity to once again share the impressive array of programs we developed for you, our most active supporters. When you join the MFA at the Museum Council, Advocate, or Patron level, you become part of a tradition of leading Museum members who make the MFA a place of convening and community—and a destination for world-class experiences with art.

Created with you and your interests in mind, these innovative, engaging programs are a way for us to recognize your commitment to the MFA and to make the transformative power of art more accessible to all. Our unique perspectives, shared interests, and engaging conversations build a vibrant community that welcomes new generations of visitors.

This season brings a diversity of events—quiet moments with curators, compelling encounters with artists, and many opportunities to gather as a community of art lovers. I encourage you to explore the selection of Curators Circles—engaging programs that are a unique benefit of higher levels of membership. You are invited to dive deep into one collection area or department, get together with fellow supporters to explore art, venture near and far with curators, and gain behind-the-scenes insights into our must-see exhibitions and galleries. There are so many ways to participate in this remarkable program and we hope you consider joining this year.

The Museum’s upcoming exhibitions offer new looks at great artists, from Georgia O’Keeffe to Vincent van Gogh, and you are an integral part of the celebrations and in-depth explorations with curatorial and conservation staff. One highlight of this year, the opening of “ Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits” next March, is a celebration you don’t want to miss. This fascinating exhibition reveals new details about Van Gogh’s techniques and processes, framing his connections with and portrayals of the postman Joseph Roulin and his family, as well as the artist’s time in Arles, in a new light.

As you explore the coming year with the MFA, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our dedicated Patron Program and Museum Council staff, who are ready to answer your questions and help plan your visits.

Your participation in these programs not only allows for a rich season of events and engagement, but is essential to the success of the MFA’s day-to-day operations, the achievements of our curatorial and conservation departments, and our ability to bring art and people together in so many ways. Beyond our walls the role of museums as places of convening and connection has never been more important. As we navigate a changing world together, the commitment of supporters like you strengthens our community here in Boston and around the world. Your support allows us to reach forward and do the work we must do.

As I look forward to my last year at the helm of the MFA, I hope you join me for what promises to be another unforgettable season together.

► Exhibition Highlights

Dalí: Disruption and Devotion

► Through 12/1/24

► Lois B. and Michael K. Torf Gallery

The outlandish and iconoclastic Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) is famous for his bizarre imagery and distinctive Surrealist vision, but he was also deeply rooted in tradition. This exhibition juxtaposes Dalí’s paintings and prints with MFA collection masterpieces by the European artists who influenced him.

Georgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore

► 10/13/24–1/20/25

► Ann and Graham Gund Gallery

American painter Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) and British sculptor Henry Moore (1898–1986) are among the most distinctive artists of the 20th century. “Georgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore” is the first exhibition to bring these two artists together in conversation, using compelling visual juxtapositions to explore their common ways of interpreting nature’s landscapes.

Power of the People: Art and Democracy

► 10/26/24–2/16/25

► Charlotte F. and Irving W. Rabb Gallery and Henry and Lois Foster Gallery

“Power of the People: Art and Democracy” asks visitors timely questions like: What does democracy look like and who has a voice in the democratic process? The exhibition highlights the ways art— from ancient Greece to contemporary America—has shaped ideas about democracy and how artists have invited citizens to contemplate its merits, participate in its practice, and call for improvements.

Deep Waters: Four Artists and the Sea

► 11/9/24–11/9/25

► Saundra B. and William H. Lane Galleries

Weaving together artworks by four artists made over centuries and across the Atlantic, this exhibition follows a genealogical thread united by the sea and invites visitors to consider and reflect on the conversation between the works of art and the unique perspectives and lived experiences of the artists.

Huntington Avenue Entrance Commission: The Knowledge Keepers

► Opens 11/14/24

► Huntington Avenue Entrance

For this inaugural commission, the MFA invited internationally recognized artist Alan Michelson (b. 1953), a Mohawk member of Six Nations of the Grand River, to create site-specific, monumental works for the exterior of the Museum’s historic building. Starting in November visitors can view The Knowledge Keepers just outside our Huntington Avenue façade, before they even step inside the MFA.

Robert Frank: Mary’s Book

► 12/21/24–6/15/25

► Herb Ritts Gallery

This exhibition looks closely at Mary’s Book (1949), Swiss artist Robert Frank’s (1924–2019) personal album of text and images of Paris dedicated to his wife, Mary, which represents a formative moment in the artist’s career.

Witnessing Humanity: The Art of John Wilson

► 2/8/25–6/22/25

► Lois B. and Michael K. Torf Gallery

The MFA is proud to present the first major retrospective on John Wilson (1922–2015), who was born and raised in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The exhibition brings together more than 100 drawings, paintings, sculptures, and archival works recently made accessible by the Wilson family that capture the artist’s lifetime reckoning with issues of Black dignity, racial justice, and social inequity.

Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits

► 3/30/25–9/7/25

► Ann and Graham Gund Gallery

During his stay in the south of France in the late 19th century, Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) grew close to postman Joseph Roulin, his wife Augustine, and their children, all of whom were often subjects for the artist’s portraits. “Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits” is the first exhibition dedicated to the Roulin portraits, reveals insights about the Dutch artist’s techniques and processes, and frames two of the MFA’s most recognizable works in a new light.
