What is Issuu?
Issuu is an electronic publishing platform which enables PDF documents to be converted into digital publications that can be shared via links or embedded into websites.
The Museum of the Order of St John uses Issue as a platform to host some of its publicly accessible digital collections for people to view and use for personal research purposes only. Users may not reproduce content from the collections on Issue. You do not need to log in or create an account with Issuu in order to view the Museum’s publications.

Museum of the Order of St John collections on Issuu
The Museum of the Order of St John currently hosts four sets of digitised collections on Issuu: a small collection of First Aid Journal, from the Museum’s Library collection, some Annual Reports from the Archive collection, issues of The St. John Cadet and The St. John Camp Cadet, youth publications from the Archive collection, and the Museum’s What’s On guide.
First Aid
First Aid began in 1894 and was an independent monthly magazine for the ambulance and nursing services (comprised of members of St John Ambulance, the British Red Cross Society, and St Andrew’s Association) The publication also includes The St John Gazette while it was published. These publications are now classed as a historical record, and any first aid advice presented within them is not in accord with current recommended practice.
Please note that the issue for 1907 is missing, and that the issues for 1929-1938 are only available to view in-person at the Museum.
Annual Reports
The modern Order of St John’s Annual Reports were produced from the very early days of the modern Order’s inception. The Museum is currently able to provide access to Annual Reports on Issuu from 1868-1970.
These records tell us about the Order’s members, their roles and ranks, promotions, admissions, and obituaries. They tell us about the work of the Order overseas, the insignia, statutes, and reports on the Chapter. The Annual Reports also play a key part in telling the history of St John Ambulance by providing information on medical training, reports on the health of the nation, information about technological advances in healthcare, and details of the formation and disbanding of various nursing and ambulance units over time. They tell us how important the work of our first aid volunteers is, how it was done, and where it took place.
The St. John Cadet
The St. John Cadet was the first magazine created specifically for the St John Ambulance Cadets. It was first published in May 1946 and continued to be published quarterly until January 1955. Please note that he Museum does not hold a complete run of this publication, but has provided access to a digital copy of each issue in the collection.
The publications contain news and information for Cadets, accounts of first aid competitions and awards, stories and opinion pieces, news from Cadet Divisions across England, Wales, and internationally, quizzes and competitions, photographs, and contemporary advertisements for various healthcare equipment and medicines.

The St. John Camp Cadet
The St. John Camp Cadet was a special edition of The St. John Cadet, published only during the 7-day Cadet Coronation Camp in August 1953. The newsletter was published for each day of camp to share news, reviews, activities, programmes for the day, competition information, and insights into camp life.
What’s On guide
The What’s On guide was first created in February 2023 and replaced the Museum’s information leaflet. The guide is published twice a year, and features information about the upcoming events and activities that are open to the public.
