I am pleased to invite you to this year’s Ontario Museum Association Annual Conference, Culture: Taking Charge. Ontario’s cultural sector is evolving and museums are taking charge. More than ever, this year’s conference program reflects sectoral changes and will include opportunities for increased member participation and discussion as we plan for an exciting future and celebrate our work together. This year, we will proudly launch the Association’s museumsuccessionmusée project, building on our foundation and gathering your feedback on how we can move ahead. Talking Circles will be a new opportunity to exchange ideas and identify goals that will inform the Association on ways forward. In the same perspective, a new student-driven conference session Forging Ahead: Ideas in Motion will explore possibilities and provide a platform for emerging museum professionals joining our workforce. The lineup of workshops and concurrent sessions covers today’s hottest topics including out-of-the box partnerships, leadership and succession, growing within a municipal structure, innovative professional development, and programming in non-traditional museum settings, among many others. We look forward to welcoming conference plenary speakers Janine Marchessault, Moe Hosseini-Ara, and Janet Carding who are leading change and will share how museums and culture are redefining creative collaborations and successfully embracing inclusivity. I look forward to sharing the diverse culture of Markham with you and hope that through this year’s programming, you will feel empowered, inspired and ready to take charge! This year’s theme – Culture: Taking Charge celebrates the accomplishments of Ontario museums and demonstrates how museums are continuing to take charge and show leadership by responding to global and local challenges and addressing issues of sustainability, social cohesion, and urbanization. Conference Speakers Opening Keynote Address: Thursday, November 7, 2013 - 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Janine Marchessault - Director of the Visible City Project, York University Janine Marchessault holds a Canada Research Chair in Art, Digital Media and Globalization at York University. Her research over the past five years has focused on urban space and cartographies of place, with a lens on Havana, Helsinki, Berlin, and Toronto. Over the past twenty years, she has worked with the curatorial collective Public Access to investigate new models of urban public art and has curated several large scale public art exhibitions, including The Leona Drive Project (2009) and the 2012 Nuit Blanche Monumental Project. She is the author of Ecstatic World: Media, Humanism, Ecology (forthcoming, MIT Press); Marshall McLuhan: Cosmic Media (Sage Publications, 2005); and co-editor of Cartographies of Place: Navigating the Urban (forthcoming); Fluid Screens, Expanded Cinema (University of Toronto Press, 2007) as well as Wild Science: Reading Feminism, Medicine and the Media (Routledge, 2000). Marchessault has recently received the prestigious Trudeau Fellowship Award to support her research. She is currently working on Land|Slide Possible Futures, site-specific artist projects housed at the 25-acre, open-air Markham Museum from September 21 to October 14, 2013.

Plenary: Thursday, November 7, 2013 - 1:15 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. Moe Hosseini-Ara - A/Director of Culture, City of Markham Moe Hosseini-Ara graduated from the University of Western Ontario’s School of Library and Information Science in 1996. He holds an honours BA in Anthropology from York University. Moe holds a permanent position as the Director of Service Excellence at Markham Public Library (MPL) where he has led the organization through numerous innovative and transformational changes. He is currently Acting Director of Culture with the City of Markham also overseeing the art gallery, museum, and theatre. Moe is a regular presenter at library conferences, speaking on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), customer service metrics, and Markham Public Library’s award winning Customer Centered Classification system.

Closing Address: Friday, November 8, 2013 - 3:20 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Janet Carding - Director and CEO, ROM Janet Carding is the Director and CEO of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Prior to joining the ROM, she held the position of Assistant Director, Public Programs & Operations at the Australian Museum in Sydney, the country’s preeminent museum of nature and culture. A museum professional for over two decades, Ms. Carding originally hails from England where she obtained her degree from Cambridge University in History and Philosophy of Science and a Masters from the University of London in History of Science and Medicine. Following her tenure at London’s Science Museum, Ms. Carding was appointed Head of Planning and Development with the National Museum of Science and Industry (NMSI). She has also taught the Museums and Galleries Administration segment of the University of Sydney’s Museum Studies program. Ms. Carding is cross-appointed as an Adjunct Professor in Museum Studies at the University of Toronto, and she is a member of the boards of the Toronto Arts Council and Canadian Museums Association.

What is the museumsuccession Project? Ontario’s museums are facing increasing demands on their work while trying to address the evolving needs and expectations of their communities and stakeholders in an ever changing landscape. In order to better respond to our members’ expressed needs and provide strategic support to Ontario’s museums, the Ontario Museum Association has embarked on the three-year museumsuccession project, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario, to work with the museum community to ensure a sustainable, vibrant, and engaging sector. This province-wide project aims to strengthen Ontario’s museums through initiatives that will support members to enhance governance, increase community engagement to secure ongoing support for museums, and to foster the continued development of an emerging museum professional workforce. Thursday, November 7, 2013 - 4:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. What is a Talking Circle? A Talking Circle is a collaborative space where you and your colleagues can discuss issues of importance. Each circle will have a facilitator and a recorder, and outcomes from the Talking Circles will be shared with delegates and the wider museum community following the conference. What do Success and Succession mean to you? How can the OMA help take you there? To meet the challenges and increasing demands facing museums, we need to understand them and work as a community to define a way forward and a vision for the future. Building on the three conference streams, Navigating Governance, Leading Change, and Forging our Path, the Talking Circles are an opportunity to exchange ideas, identify collective goals, and inform the OMA and the ongoing museumsuccession project on ways forward for Ontario museums.

Conference Opening and Keynote Address: Janine Marchessault

Contemporary Art and The New Museum: Land|Slide as Case Study Site-specific contemporary art exhibitions tied to historical research are creating novel collaborations between artists and museums in a global context. This talk will address the exhibition Land|Slide Possible Futures held at the Markham Museum (September-October 2013) as a collaborative history project organized by the Public Access Artist Collective, York University, and the Markham Museum. The exhibition invited over thirty artists to create installations (using a variety of new and old media) across the Museum’s twenty-five acres and thirty historic buildings. The exhibition seeks to open up the past and reflect on the future in one of Canada’s most diverse, agriculturally rich and fastest growing edge cities. Land|Slide asks: how can we address some of the most pressing tensions within Canada today, the balance between ecology and economy; development and preservation; and diversity and history? What is the role of public art and museums in fostering critical conversations about our planet in transition?

Municipal museums work within the restrictions of their municipality’s policies, procedures and by-laws, and numerous pieces of provincial legislation. Learn how three municipally owned and operated museums have successfully navigated within their municipal structure to meet the museums’ desired outcomes.

Designing for Innovation Presenters: Cheryl Blackman, Assistant Vice President, Audience (Royal Ontario Museum) Lisa Grogan, Co-Founder, Brock Hart, Co-Founder & CEO (Overlap Associates Inc.) The world is changing at an incredibly fast pace. Ontario’s museums must be more resilient than ever to adapt to community needs and play a role in solving evolving societal issues. This fun and engaging collaborative session will teach participants how to address these issues by driving new value through a structured innovation process, while understanding the measurement of impact in a whole new way through a highly-effective business modeling tool that can be adapted and applied within the context of their individual museum.

Get an update on successful fundraising approaches in the not-for-profit sector and discuss with experts the advantages, and challenges, of innovative techniques including social media, crowdsourcing, and mobile technology. Trends in Leadership and Governance at the Municipal Level: The Ottawa heritage and museum scene after five years of the Museum Sustainability Plan Presenters: Henriette Riegel, Executive Director (Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum), Laura Gibbs, Executive Director (Ottawa Museum Network), Isabelle Geoffrion, Manager (Watson’s Mill), Paulina Abarca-Cartin, Executive Director (Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa), Janik Aubin-Robert, Curator (Muséoparc Vanier Museopark) This panel will examine how local community museums can demonstrate good governance and leadership in local heritage with presentations from two heritage service organizations and three community museums in Ottawa. The strong partnership, with consistent funding and support all the way up to the Mayor, has allowed the museum and heritage sector to build capacity, move forward, and experiment with innovative partnerships, programming, and organizational structures.

Taking Charge of Culture and Taking Risks at Campbell House Museum Presenters: Liz Driver, Director/Curator, Staceylee Turner, Curatorial Assistant, Angela Wright, Historical Interpreter (Campbell House Museum); Miles Collyer, Visual Artist (Founding member of The Tintype Studio), Alex Dault, Associate Artistic Director (Single Thread Theatre Company) At Campbell House Museum, citizens gather to discuss, create, and perform in a unique heritage setting. By bringing their talent to this historic house, the creative partners help to develop new audiences, build community, and contribute to Toronto’s economy. A panel of three museum staff, together with an artist, actor/ director, and musicians (via video), will share their experience of taking risks through cultural collaborations. They will address the specific and broader issues of hosting live events in a historic space.

Forging a Collaborative Path for Superior Professional Development Presenters: Lindsay MacDonald, Director of Programs (ArtsBuild Ontario), Susan Cohen, Program Director (WorkInCulture) Join ArtsBuild Ontario and WorkInCulture as they present their peer-to-peer mentoring program, the Arts Facilities Mentoring Network. Presenters will report on participant feedback, addressing outcomes and lessons learned in the process. Mentoring program participants from large and small institutions will be involved in this session.

See how the museum’s current location was adapted from a retail store in a shopping mall to become a cultural attraction generating a re-birth in the community.

Future Care: The integration of arts and medicine Presenter: Nicole Knibb, Education Coordinator (McMaster Museum of Art) The Art of Medicine, at the McMaster Museum of Art, is a multifaceted arts-based course for Residents of McMaster University’s Faculty of Medicine. Witness how the arts are used to hone skills in observation, communication, collaboration, empathy, and mindfulness through visual literacy, art therapy, and movement as a response to shifting medical humanities education and the goals of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework.

Creating Relevance in Your Community Presenter: Michael Delfre, Executive Director (Canadian Bushplane Heritage Center) How do you identify criteria to create relevance for your organization? By understanding current or future needs, museums can develop and offer programs and services that will meet those needs, thereby ensuring the museum will be relevant in their community. This presentation will highlight programs and partnerships of the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Center.

A Year with the 1906 Berlin Cook Book: Interpretation through a blog Presenter: Carolyn Blackstock The Berlin Cook Book, a community recipe book published in Berlin (Kitchener) Ontario in 1906, was compiled by the Ladies of Berlin, Waterloo and Friends Elsewhere. In 1912 the town of Berlin became the city of Berlin, later renamed Kitchener. In 2012, Carolyn Blackstock decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of cityhood by cooking every day from the Berlin Cook Book and posting the results on her blog. She was also keen to learn about the women (and men) who contributed recipes; who they were and what kind of life they were living in 1906. The result: 366 Days with the Berlin Cook Book. Her experience as an interpreter in a variety of living history sites was invaluable in the interpretation of the cook book for readers, including comments on the blog and Facebook.

Marketing Museums in the 21st Century Presenter: Laura Gibbs, Executive Director (Ottawa Museum Network) The role of marketing in museums is no longer an ad hoc activity or last minute thought that occurs before the launch of an exhibit. Marketing plays a central role in understanding and reaching new audiences, selling core products and services, and building awareness of the museum. Join Laura Gibbs from the Ottawa Museum Network as she highlights the five critical marketing practices that you can integrate into your marketing in order to promote your museum in the constantly evolving market.

Mobile Apps & Living History: How to use your cell phone in 1914 Presenter: Megan Meloche, Intern (Waterloo Region Museum) Using the Waterloo Region Museum as a case study, this presentation will explore the use of mobile apps at a living history site and how to use apps to supplement a visitor’s experience. Using Building Stories (buildingstories.co) as the chosen mobile app, this presentation will also identify what types of information a living history site or museum may want to include on an app and how to market the app successfully.
