STAVANGER THE CITY BY THE SEA
EXHIBITIONS AND EXPERIENCES IN HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
EXHIBITIONS AND EXPERIENCES IN HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
Stavanger Maritime Museum tells the story of Stavanger as a port city. Here you can explore people’s relationship to the sea from the distant past to today.
The museum is located in buildings built between 1740 and 1840. The premises consist of former waterfront warehouses, homes and shops. These buildings and their rooms still bear traces of their former use. There are several narrow passageways and stairs, so it’s smart to consult the museum map to find your way around.
The museum’s main exhibition tells you about Stavanger’s history as a port city from the Middle Ages to the present. Immerse yourself in the story of how the city grew and the activities around Vågen (the harbour).
Children can play roles such as dock worker or quayside merchant in Stavanger in the 1950s. It’s fun for children, and for adults, it offers opportunities to recollect the past.
Learn about different aspects and problems of being a port city. At History Lab you can immerse yourself in maritime themes and activities. You can sit at the work table or relax in comfortable chairs.
Experience authentic interiors from the 1800s and 1900s. The shop offered a wide range of goods, and in the office, the ship owner ran his business and young boys sought employment. The owners lived in private flats. If you find your way up to the sail loft, you’ll enter the workplace of sailmakers.
