The Fenyes Mansion is unique historically, having housed four generations of the Fenyes-Curtin-Paloheimo family, with the original décor of the early 1900s preserved largely unchanged. Welcome to Los Angeles and the 58th MSA Retail Conference & Expo!

n behalf of MSA, I would like to welcome all of you to Los Angeles and the 2013 MSA Conference & Expo. This year’s program is packed with exciting educational sessions, fun networking events and great opportunities to see some unique new products. The Program Resource Group (PRG) and MSA staff worked hard to create a schedule that includes new speakers, relevant topics and new formats. A few highlights include the social media workshop by Jason McDonald, where you’ll walk away with some great tips to boost your social media program, spark sessions offering a quick “top 10” rundown on a variety of topics, the Library Foundation of Los Angeles’ “Store on Wheels” (they’re actually parking it outside the convention center!) and the product development panel that will lead right into an exciting new format for Members Market (let me just say there will be a chocolate fountain). Be sure to attend the MSA Membership Meeting on Saturday where you’ll meet the MSA staff, incoming board of directors and MSA’s new executive director/CEO. We have 260 exhibitors at the Expo this year! More than 25 percent of those exhibitors are new to the MSA Expo and I’m looking forward to seeing what they have to offer. Where else can you find so many vendors in one place catering to the unique needs of our industry? For those of you attending the various off-site learning excursions, I’ll be eagerly waiting to hear what you liked most about your experience. And, of course, I look forward to seeing everyone at the networking event at FIDM Sunday evening. THE GREENBERG SCHOLARSHIP FUND

amuel Julius Greenberg was director of museum shops for the Smithsonian Institution from 1982–89. He felt that the MSA Retail Conference & Expo was a golden opportunity to learn, shop and connect with museum retail professionals. In honor of Sam’s memory and to embrace his enthusiasm, MSA founded the Greenberg Scholarship Fund, which helps bring cultural commerce personnel to their first MSA Conference. Since the scholarship fund began in 1991, more than 160 members have received awards. Donations from museum store personnel and industry vendors (including many Expo exhibitors) are the primary sources of funding for these important scholarships. By supporting the Greenberg Scholarship Fund, you are doing your part to keep the museum retail industry strong and growing.

In order to recognize the contributions of those MSA members we have lost over the years, the Greenberg Scholarship has been renamed the MSA Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations made at the 2013 Conference and beyond will allow the donor to make an “in memory of” donation. Help ensure that the next generation of cultural commerce professionals gets a chance to participate in the networking, education and product sourcing experience. As institutions’ budgets tighten, this scholarship fund is a lifeline to our community. Don’t let that diminish; we need your contributions. Donations may be made at the MSA Registration Desk.

MSA ANTITRUST POLICY

SA is a nonprofit association organized to advance the success of cultural commerce and of the professionals engaged in it. MSA is committed to helping member institutions be competitive in their respective markets, fiscally responsible and, in general, assets to their institutions. Through the MSA Retail Conference & Expo, chapter meetings, seminars and various publications, the Association brings together museum representatives and vendors. The board of directors recognizes that the Association’s activities could be seen by some as an opportunity for anticompetitive conduct. Thus, the board takes this opportunity to express its undeviating policy to comply strictly with the letter and spirit of all federal, state, applicable trade regulations and antitrust laws. Any actions of MSA or its staff, officers, directors or members that violate these regulations and laws is detrimental to the Association’s interests and is unequivocally contrary to MSA policy. The following rules apply to all MSA

activities and must be observed at all MSAsponsored activities and functions under all circumstances—without exception— unless specifically noted here. To assist MSA staff members, officers and committees in recognizing situations that may raise the appearance of an antitrust problem, the board of directors has adopted this Antitrust Policy. Should questions arise as to the manner in which the antitrust laws apply to activities of MSA or any of its committees, such questions shall be directed to MSA headquarters.

GUIDELINES • MSA shall not be used for the purpose of bringing about, or attempting to bring about, any understanding or agreement—written or oral, formal or informal, express or implied— regarding prices, terms or conditions of sale, distribution, volume or customers. • No MSA activity or communication shall include discussion—for any purpose or in any fashion—of pricing methods or other limitations in timing,

costs or volume of production or sale, or allocation of customers. • No MSA activity or communication shall include any discussion that might be construed as an attempt to prevent any person or business entity from gaining access to any market or customer for goods or services, or to prevent any business entity from obtaining a supply of goods or otherwise purchasing goods or services freely in the market. • MSA-sponsored activities shall not include any activity or communication, which is, or might be construed as, an agreement to refrain from purchasing any products, services or supplies from any supplier. These rules apply to informal discussions at MSA-sponsored activities and functions as well as formal presentations and meetings. Antitrust compliance is the responsibility of every MSA member, affiliate, sponsor and staff member.

During the event, you’ll want to take some time to tour the museum’s collection of more than 15,000 objects representing more than 200 years of fashion history, and view the spectacular Oscar fashions temporary exhibit. Make sure to visit the store (they are kindly offering a 20 percent discount for MSA attendees). FIDM is located within a few blocks of the Los Angeles Convention Center. We ask that you support our efforts to reduce the number of buses, thereby decreasing costs and reducing our carbon footprint, by enjoying the brief stroll to and from FIDM. Petal Connection is a team of mother and two daughters in Southern California that transform real butterflies and flowers into unique pieces of jewelry. We employ a proprietary process of multiple resin coatings developed over many years of trial and error. Resin makes our pieces both very lightweight and very durable. We love working with individual museum stores on custom items, such as their state flower or special tree, etc. What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? All of our butterflies are raised on small family-owned farms, mostly in the Amazon. Butterflies are raised to provide cocoons to the many live butterfly exhibits that are becoming so popular all over the United States, as none of these are able to raise their own. This results in a large number of adult butterflies that average a total life span of less than 21 days. Therefore, no butterflies are harmed in producing our jewelry, and we include a card explaining this with each item. Most of our flower items come from flowers grown in our very own backyard, or those of family members. Petal Connection is proud to contribute to Kiva, a nonprofit organization that extends loans to women in third world countries who are trying to start their own businesses.
