The Huntington’s 12 themed landscapes, including a 100-year-old Japanese Garden, give the museum’s other treasures (like Thomas Gainsborough’s

“Blue Boy” and the Gutenberg Bible) plenty of competition. Roses, camellias, wisteria and colorful spring perennials are among the season’s standouts. This spring, visitors also can enjoy a profusion of flowers on display on the gallery walls in a special exhibition titled, “When They Were Wild: Recapturing California’s Wildflower Heritage,” on view March 9 through June 3. Afternoon tea in the Rose Garden Tea Room is the perfect way to wrap up your visit. Welcome to Los Angeles and the 58th MSA Retail Conference & Expo!

O

n behalf of MSA, I would like to welcome all of you to Los Angeles and the 2013 MSA Conference & Expo. This year’s program is packed with exciting educational sessions, fun networking events and great opportunities to see some unique new products. The Program Resource Group (PRG) and MSA staff worked hard to create a schedule that includes new speakers, relevant topics and new formats. A few highlights include the social media workshop by Jason McDonald, where you’ll walk away with some great tips to boost your social media program, spark sessions offering a quick “top 10” rundown on a variety of topics, the Library Foundation of Los Angeles’ “Store on Wheels” (they’re actually parking it outside the convention center!) and the product development panel that will lead right into an exciting new format for Members Market (let me just say there will be a chocolate fountain). Be sure to attend the MSA Membership Meeting on Saturday where you’ll meet the MSA staff, incoming board of directors and MSA’s new executive director/CEO. We have 260 exhibitors at the Expo this year! More than 25 percent of those exhibitors are new to the MSA Expo and I’m looking forward to seeing what they have to offer. Where else can you find so many vendors in one place catering to the unique needs of our industry? For those of you attending the various off-site learning excursions, I’ll be eagerly waiting to hear what you liked most about your experience. And, of course, I look forward to seeing everyone at the networking event at FIDM Sunday evening. Finally, I want to thank all of our Expo exhibitors, Members Market participants, sponsors, PRG members, MSA staff and board members, as well as a host of volunteers. This event would not be possible without their continued support.

THE GREENBERG SCHOLARSHIP FUND

S

amuel Julius Greenberg was director of museum shops for the Smithsonian Institution from 1982–89. He felt that the MSA Retail Conference & Expo was a golden opportunity to learn, shop and connect with museum retail professionals. In honor of Sam’s memory and to embrace his enthusiasm, MSA founded the Greenberg Scholarship Fund, which helps bring cultural commerce personnel to their first MSA Conference. Since the scholarship fund began in 1991, more than 160 members have received awards. Donations from museum store personnel and industry vendors (including many Expo exhibitors) are the primary sources of funding for these important scholarships. By supporting the Greenberg Scholarship Fund, you are doing your part to keep the museum retail industry strong and growing.

In order to recognize the contributions of those MSA members we have lost over the years, the Greenberg Scholarship has been renamed the MSA Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations made at the 2013 Conference and beyond will allow the donor to make an “in memory of” donation. Help ensure that the next generation of cultural commerce professionals gets a chance to participate in the networking, education and product sourcing experience. As institutions’ budgets tighten, this scholarship fund is a lifeline to our community. Don’t let that diminish; we need your contributions. Donations may be made at the MSA Registration Desk.

MSA ANTITRUST POLICY

M

SA is a nonprofit association organized to advance the success of cultural commerce and of the professionals engaged in it. MSA is committed to helping member institutions be competitive in their respective markets, fiscally responsible and, in general, assets to their institutions. Through the MSA Retail Conference & Expo, chapter meetings, seminars and various publications, the Association brings together museum representatives and vendors. The board of directors recognizes that the Association’s activities could be seen by some as an opportunity for anticompetitive conduct. Thus, the board takes this opportunity to express its undeviating policy to comply strictly with the letter and spirit of all federal, state, applicable trade regulations and antitrust laws. Any actions of MSA or its staff, officers, directors or members that violate these regulations and laws is detrimental to the Association’s interests and is unequivocally contrary to MSA policy. The following rules apply to all MSA

activities and must be observed at all MSAsponsored activities and functions under all circumstances—without exception— unless specifically noted here. To assist MSA staff members, officers and committees in recognizing situations that may raise the appearance of an antitrust problem, the board of directors has adopted this Antitrust Policy. Should questions arise as to the manner in which the antitrust laws apply to activities of MSA or any of its committees, such questions shall be directed to MSA headquarters.

GUIDELINES • MSA shall not be used for the purpose of bringing about, or attempting to bring about, any understanding or agreement—written or oral, formal or informal, express or implied— regarding prices, terms or conditions of sale, distribution, volume or customers. • No MSA activity or communication shall include discussion—for any purpose or in any fashion—of pricing methods or other limitations in timing,

costs or volume of production or sale, or allocation of customers. • No MSA activity or communication shall include any discussion that might be construed as an attempt to prevent any person or business entity from gaining access to any market or customer for goods or services, or to prevent any business entity from obtaining a supply of goods or otherwise purchasing goods or services freely in the market. • MSA-sponsored activities shall not include any activity or communication, which is, or might be construed as, an agreement to refrain from purchasing any products, services or supplies from any supplier. These rules apply to informal discussions at MSA-sponsored activities and functions as well as formal presentations and meetings. Antitrust compliance is the responsibility of every MSA member, affiliate, sponsor and staff member.

T

his year’s program was developed with input from a volunteer planning group. The sessions are based on five of MSA’s eight Knowledge Standards. The Knowledge Standards highlight the core knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the responsibilities of a cultural commerce professional. The application of the Knowledge Standards program at our cultural institutions help museum stores become a more integral part of the institution’s mission and success. Be sure to thank the 2013 PRG members for their tireless efforts when you see them in Los Angeles. Use the Knowledge Standards icons to customize your schedule so that you can focus on the sessions most applicable to the issues you face in your institution today.

Social media, in turn, is the new place where fans and friends congregate to meet, greet and share fun ideas. Yet few museum stores succeed at creating an active online community, and the few that do often still struggle to turn online “likes” and “views” into in-store visits and purchases. Gain practical tips, tricks and secrets that will make your social media pages not only lively but also productive ways to encourage customers to visit, revisit and make purchases at your museum store. Leave this session enthused and excited about how the “real” world can nurture the “online” world of social media, and vice versa!

They’re part of an empowered generation that’s used to being seen and heard—and they expect you to know them, too. Consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow will present an essential understanding of how Gen Y is fundamentally different from other generations, what motivates them to buy and what they’re looking for in their relationships with retailers and brands. We will also demonstrate how a museum’s own publications can and should serve as the core of any museum store’s book department, and how to maximize synergies within an institution for a stronger retail-publishing alliance and, as a result, better sales and profits.

What products and services do you offer the cultural commerce industry? Celebrate the history and innovation of the Boeing Company with authentic merchandise that invokes the spirit of the aerospace leader. We offer historical products from our heritage companies, such as McDonnell, Douglas and North American, products featuring current aircraft such as the 787 Dreamliner, the new 747-8 Intercontinental, as well as Boeing signature and defense.

What products and services do you offer the cultural commerce industry? “Curmudgeon Cards are unique keepsakes, which warrant framing, to include in one’s personal Art gallery.”—Cim Castellon, Los Angeles County Museum of Art Since 2001, Elisa Goodman has been creating wonderfully unique and elegant Art-themed, custom-topic greeting cards, using postage stamps from around the world, embellishing them with re-purposed fabrics and decorative papers. She specializes in creating Art cards for your upcoming exhibitions. Curmudgeon Cards have been discovered in many major museums including: The Getty, The MFAs of Houston and Boston, the Art museums of Seattle, Denver, Cleveland and Philadelphia, among others. Specialty areas include: Impressionists, Asian Woodblocks and Teapots, Ikebana, Seashells, Butterflies, Fashion, etc. These “must have” cards are usually purchased as a gift and very often sell out! Mostly modern? Her clever, cuttingedge illustrations offer a colorful array of Birthday, Specialty Topics and YogaThemed cards sharing her Eye-Opening perspective on life and artistic selfexpression. Also available as signed, collectible Art posters. Hand-crafted in the U.S., fast turn-around, low-minimums and exceptional artistry! Eco-friendly and custom text available.

What products and services do you offer the cultural commerce industry? LaGrave Designs is proud to offer KaleidEscapes, an innovative line of products and images hand-crafted in the U.S.A. We digitally manipulate photos of famous buildings and landmarks, as well as flowers, fruits and vegetables, to create stunning kaleidoscopic designs. Our most popular product is our shadow boxes. We meticulously cut and handassemble the kaleidoscope designs to create dimension, and frame them in shadow boxes. We also offer coasters and trivets as quick impulse buys. Our custom program allows you to offer something completely unique and relevant to your customers with just a small set-up fee and no minimums. We can work with photos of your building (the façade, lobby or recognizable architectural detail, such as a mosaic floor, or stained glass window), permanent installations or rotating exhibits. What will you KaleidEscape?

What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? We offer a comprehensive package to retail stores including assortment planning, fixture and signage support, as well as dedicated customer support based on your buy.

What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? Curmudgeon Cards will be exhibiting at the ACRE tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nev., April 30–May 2 in Booth #1808.

What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? LaGrave Designs will license or sell you your custom design. We understand that one company can’t provide all of the products for a museum shop. By purchasing your custom image, you can print the artwork on mugs, t-shirts or postcards, using the vendors that you already have established relationships with. This allows us to concentrate on what we do best, while providing the proper product mix for your store.

OZONE DESIGN INC. Björn DelaCruz New York, N.Y. bjorn@ozonesocks.com www.ozonesocks.com Booth #617 What products and services do you offer the cultural commerce industry? Ozone can do good for far more than just fashion, and that’s never been more clear than with our Endangered Cats and Four Elements collections. Designed to highlight these natural beauties in hopes it will help preserve them, part of the proceeds for these socks go toward charities, including wildcat foundation Panthera. Ozone did extensive research to use the best materials possible and opted not to use organic cotton (which would create a large carbon footprint when shipped to our mills). Instead, we created socks to remind you of our best natural resources: stunning wildlife and the earth’s elements. What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? Ozone Socks is a NYC-based company well known for one-of-a-kind, artistic designs and quality. Our products are sold at Saks Fifth Avenue as well as 2,000 American boutiques. We can credit our success to our complex creative process: Laurie, CEO, Peter, Creative Director, and Gina, Ozone’s designer, regularly discuss trends in the art and design world and develop base lines and a vocabulary for a collection. Peter translates ideas into the line’s concepts, which Gina transforms into beautiful, elaborate designs. This is why Ozone stands a world apart from any sock company — a true manifestation of “The Art of Socks.”

PARLI-CARDS GAMES (A DIVISION OF PRACTICAL STRATEGIES, INC.)

Mary Jo Joyce West Bend, Wis. mjj@practical-strategies.com www.parlicards.com Booth #521 What products and services do you offer the cultural commerce industry? Parli-Cards products are gifts, games and souvenirs featuring two lines of original games for ages 8–98. Our Acronym Ace series of flash card games has expanded to include five titles. Decipher the alphabet soup of U.S. acronyms with SpeakGOV, SpeakSPORTS, SpeakTXT, SpeakLAW and SpeakMED. Points are awarded to players or teams who correctly define acronyms in these fast, funny games which are sure to generate laughter! While fun for all, Parli-Card Games are also factual and educational. All games are made in the U.S.A. and are patentpending. What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? Parli-Cards Games are the inventions of Mary Jo Joyce, and produced by a division of her public policy, consulting and market research company, Practical Strategies, Inc., with offices in West Bend, Wis., and Washington, D.C.

PETAL CONNECTION Simona Dedek Santa Clarita, Calif. simona@petalconnection.com petalconnection.com Booth #424 What products and services do you offer the cultural commerce industry? Petal Connection is a team of mother and two daughters in Southern California that transform real butterflies and flowers into unique pieces of jewelry. We employ a proprietary process of multiple resin coatings developed over many years of trial and error. Resin makes our pieces both very lightweight and very durable. We love working with individual museum stores on custom items, such as their state flower or special tree, etc. What information about your company do you want to share with attendees? All of our butterflies are raised on small family-owned farms, mostly in the Amazon. Butterflies are raised to provide cocoons to the many live butterfly exhibits that are becoming so popular all over the United States, as none of these are able to raise their own. This results in a large number of adult butterflies that average a total life span of less than 21 days. Therefore, no butterflies are harmed in producing our jewelry, and we include a card explaining this with each item. Most of our flower items come from flowers grown in our very own backyard, or those of family members. Petal Connection is proud to contribute to Kiva, a nonprofit organization that extends loans to women in third world countries who are trying to start their own businesses.
