Dear Friend, Back in 2004, many of my closest advisors and I began to plan the Museum’s very first International Conference on World War II. After a one-year delay due to Hurricane Katrina, we launched this wonderful event in November 2006. Since then, we have grown our program both in size and in content to be the best gathering of WWII scholars, authors, veterans, and enthusiasts from around the world. As many of you know, we dedicated the last six years to commemorating the 70th Anniversary of World War II in a Conference Series presented by the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and the Tawani Foundation. The 70th Anniversary Series told the story of this epic conflict, from the beginning of the war in Asia and the rise of the Nazis in Europe to the Allied counterattacks and ultimate victorie in Europe and the Pacific. Last year’s program culminated in a discussion of the post-war years that saw unprecedented change. Though the 70th Anniversary Series is over, our hosting these Conferences is not. I am delighted and honored to say that our wonderful partner and presenting sponsors, the Pritzker Military Foundation, the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and the Tawani Foundation have agreed to extend their commitment for the next five years! I am excited to invite you to our 10th International Conference on World War II, to be held November 16-18, 2017! The most frequently asked question that we received from guests at the 2016 Conference was, “What is the theme for next year?” Well, we have decided that moving forward, “World War II” will be the theme! This allows us to incorporate the freshest research and newest works into our audience, while continuing to bring the biggest and best-known names in the field to the Museum. As we continue to explore ways to keep the audience engaged over the three-day weekend, we have added more panel discussions, allowing both our guests and our panelists to benefit from more conversation and longer question-and-answer periods. Since our 2014 Conference, we have also expanded our programmatic offerings by including a one-day, pre-conference symposium. Past symposia have focused specifically on D-Day, the Holocaust, and Espionage. This year we will be focusing on one of the most infamous and enigmatic figures of the 20th Century–Adolf Hitler. The International Conference on World War II has been one of the most wellattended highlights on the Museum’s very busy calendar, and I am sure that after you review this brochure, you will place it on your calendar, as well. The International Conference on World War II The National WWII Museum, New Orleans The National WWII Museum has hosted the International Conference on World War II since 2006–bringing the best and brightest scholars, authors, and historians from around the globe to discuss key battles, personalities, strategies, issues, and controversies of "the war that changed the world."
In addition to the many returning presenters, the Conference Planning Committee makes an effort to invite new historians each year to share their latest findings. Joining the featured speakers are hundreds of attendees who travel from all over the world to learn more about this epic event. With an emphasis on non-academic presentations and encouraging presenters to be more conversational than lecturing, the Conference strives to connect with the audience through engaging discussions, question-andanswer periods, book signings, and receptions throughout the weekend. With the generous and continued support of the Museum’s longstanding partner and Conference Presenting Sponsors, the Pritzker Military Foundation, the Pritzker Military Museum & Library, and the Tawani Foundation, the International Conference on World War II is sure to remain the world’s leading convention of World War II experts, students, and enthusiasts.

Built on the successes of the Museum’s 70th Anniversary of World War II Conference Series, the Museum decided to break out of the mold of yearly “themed” conferences. Rather than focusing on one year in the war, a particular battle or campaign, or one specific individual each year, the 2017 International Conference on World War II will address the Museum’s mission statement, and imparts why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today.

A pre-conference symposium on “Hitler in History,” invites some of the world's experts to share their knowledge. Historians and authors with decades of knowledge and research share their insights alongside the newest researchers in the field. Many of these scholars are first-time presenters, while others are favorites of previous conference attendees, including Rick Atkinson, Conrad Crane, Richard Frank, Alex Kershaw, Allan Millett, Don Miller, Alexandra Richie, and Gerhard Weinberg. Conference programming commences with a festive reception in the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion on the evening of Thursday, November 16, before moving to the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center for the Opening Keynote Address by the Museum’s own Robert M. Citino, PhD, the Samuel Zemurray Stone Senior Historian. Focusing on recent findings, Dr. Citino will discuss, his latest book, The Wehrmacht’s Last Stand: German Military Operations, 1944-45. On Friday, November 17 and Saturday, November 18, all Conference sessions take place at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, with an included continental breakfast and boxed lunch each day. In response to comments and requests from past conference attendees, Conference registration now includes a Friday night reception and open house on the Museum campus, allowing private viewing of exhibits and special artifact displays after hours with docents and staff. With the Museum's own entertainment acts also performing during this time, this opportunity to connect with fellow attendees, speakers, and Museum staff promises to become a favorite Conference event. The weekend concludes with a Closing Banquet in the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center, under our rare B-17E Flying Fortress, “My Gal Sal,” and other warbirds. The 10th International Conference on World War II Pre-Conference Symposium “Hitler in History” Thursday, November 16th The National WWII Museum US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center Leading up to our 2014 Conference we added a one-day, pre-conference symposium that provided attendees with a more in-depth exploration of a specific topic in WWII history– that year, it was D-Day. We offered a symposium in 2015, as well, focused on the Holocaust. The high demand for the symposia content in those years prompted us to move the 2016 symposium on espionage from BB's Stage Door Canteen to the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center so we could welcome more guests. For 2017, the subject of our symposium will be the enigmatic leader who planned unfathomable acts against humanity: Adolf Hitler. Our slate of esteemed historians will delve into how Hitler and his National Socialists came to power and ruled over Germany and Europe, and discuss how the media portrayed him then and throughout the decades since. The symposium closes with an exploration of the various attempts to assassinate "the Führer." Our focus is to analyze how he came to power and the hell that was unleashed on the world because of him, not to glamorize or glorify him or his Third Reich.

By 1943, the war was lost, and most German officers knew it. Three quarters of a century later, the question persists: "What kept the German army going in an increasingly hopeless situation?" Where some historians have found explanations in the power of Hitler or the role of ideology, Robert M. Citino, the world's leading scholar on the subject, posits a more straightforward solution: Bewegungskrieg, the way of war cultivated by the Germans over the course of history. In this gripping account of German military campaigns during the final phase of World War II, Citino charts the inevitable path by which Bewegungskrieg, or a "war of movement," inexorably led to Nazi Germany's defeat. The Wehrmacht's Last Stand analyzes the German's Totenritt, or death ride, from January 1944—with simultaneous Allied offensives at Anzio and Ukraine– until May 1945, the collapse of the Wehrmacht in the field and the Soviet storming of Berlin. In clear and compelling prose, and bringing extensive reading of the German-language literature to bear, Citino focuses on the German view of these campaigns. Often very different from the Allied perspective, this approach allows for a more nuanced and far-reaching understanding of the last battles of the Wehrmacht than any now available. With Citino's previous volumes, Death of the Wehrmacht and The Wehrmacht Retreats, The Wehrmacht's Last Stand completes a uniquely comprehensive picture of the Germany army's strategy, operations, and performance against the Allies in the Second World War. RICK ATKINSON
Rick Atkinson is the best-selling author of the Liberation Trilogy, a narrative history of the U.S. military’s role in the liberation of Europe in WWII. The Trilogy consists of An Army at Dawn (winner of the Pulitzer Prize for history), The Day of Battle, and The Guns at Last Light, which was released in May 2013. His other books include The Long Gray Line, In the Company of Soldiers, and Crusade. Atkinson is the recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes for journalism, the George Polk Award, and the 2010 Pritzker Military Museum & Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. He holds a Master of Arts degree in English literature from the University of Chicago. He worked as a reporter, foreign correspondent, and senior editor at the Washington Post before becoming a full-time book author. Atkinson served as the Gen. Omar N. Bradley Chair of Strategic Leadership at the U.S. Army War College, and sits on The National WWII Museum’s Presidential Counselors advisory board. Atkinson is currently working on a trilogy on the American Revolution.
SIR RICHARD J. EVANS, DPhil
Richard Evans is the author of Third Reich trilogy, which consists of The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich in Power; and The Third Reich at War. His other books include: The Third Reich in History and Memory; The Pursuit of Power: 1815-1914; Telling Lies About Hitler; and In Defense of History. Evans has won the Wolfson Literary Award for History, the William H. Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine, the Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History, and the Hamburg Medaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society, and an Honorary Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and of Birkbeck College, London. Since being called as the principal expert witness before the High Court in London during the 2000 trial Irving v. Penguin Books, Ltd., his work has centered on Holocaust denial and the clash of truth and belief when history enters the courtroom, and how World War II is remembered.

NIGEL HAMILTON, PhD
Nigel Hamilton is a British-born biographer and historian, now a naturalized American citizen, who received the Whitbread Prize for Biography and the Templer Medal for Military History. Mr. Hamilton was elected president of BIO (Biographers International Organization) and hosted its conferences at University of Massachusetts Boston in 2010 and 2014.
His latest work is the second of his threevolume study of Franklin Delano Roosevelt as U.S. Commander in Chief in World War II, Commander in Chief: FDR’s Battle with Churchill, 1943, which follows his 2014 book The Mantle of Command: FDR at War, 1941-1942. His previous works include: American Caesars: Lives of the Presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush, a group biography of the last twelve US presidents; JFK: Reckless Youth, which was made into a four-hour ABC mini-series; and his official life trilogy on British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, Monty: Final Years of the Field-Marshal, 1944-1976.
JAMES HORNFISCHER
James Hornfischer is the author of three acclaimed works of WWII naval history: The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy’s Finest Hour; Ship of Ghosts: The Story of the USS Houston, FDR’s Legendary Lost Cruise, and the Epic Saga of Her Survivor; Neptune’s Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal; and most recently, The Flood at Fleet Tide: America at Total War in the Pacific, 1944-1945. Hornfischer’s writing career has grown out of a lifelong interest in the Pacific war. He has appeared on television on The History Channel, Fox News Channel’s War Stories with Oliver North and C-SPAN’s BookTV. A native of Massachusetts and a graduate of Colgate University and the University of Texas School of Law, Hornfischer is a member of the Naval Order of the United States and the Navy League, and was appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry as an “Admiral in the Texas Navy.” A former New York book editor, Hornfischer is president of the literary agency Hornfischer Literary Management in Austin, Texas.

DONALD MILLER, PHD
Donald L. Miller is the John Henry MacCracken Professor of History at Lafayette College and an expert on World War II, among other topics in American history. Three of his eight books are on WWII: The Story of World War II; D-Days in the Pacific, the story of the American re conquest of the Pacific form Imperial Japan; and Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany --all published by Simon & Schuster. Masters of the Air is the primary source for HBO’s upcoming miniseries of the same title, on which Miller is serving as chief historical consultant. He also served as an historical consultant for HBO’s miniseries The Pacific, and was also the writer and chief historical consultant for WWII in HD, a 10-hour series that aired on the History Channel. Miller currently sits on the Museum’s Presidential Counselors advisory board and has been a key advisor to The National WWII Museum on many projects, including content elements for the Museum’s U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center.

RICHARD OVERY, PHD
Richard Overy was educated at Caius College, Cambridge, and taught history at Cambridge from 1972 to 1979 as a fellow from Queens' College, and from 1976 as a university assistant lecturer. From 1980 to 2004 he taught at King's College, London, where he was named professor of modern history in 1994. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (1977), Fellow of the British Academy (2000), and Fellow of King's College (2003). In 2001 he was awarded the Samuel Elliot Morison Prize of the Society for Military History for his contribution to the history of warfare. In September 2004 he took up appointment as Professor of History at the University of Exeter. His books include: Why the Allies Won; The Bombing War: Europe 19391945; The Third Reich: A Chronicle; 1939: Countdown to War; Dictators: Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia. In September 2017 he will publish his latest work, A New History of the Second World War.
ALEXANDRA RICHIE, DPhil
Alexandra Richie is an historian of Germany and Central and Eastern Europe, with a Specialization in defense and security issues. She completed her B.A. (Hons) in Political Science at the University of Victoria and went on to study at St Antony's College, Oxford, where she wrote her doctoral thesis, The Political Manipulation of History in East and West Germany.
Richie is also the author of Faust’s Metropolis: A History of Berlin, which was named one of the top ten books of the year by American Publisher’s Weekly, and Warsaw 1944, which won the Newsweek Teresa Torańska Prize for best non-fiction book of 2014 and the Kazimierz Moczarski Prize for Best History Book 2015. She has contributed to many articles, documentaries, radio, and television programs. Richie is a Presidential Counselor at The National World War II Museum, and a member of the Senate at the Collegium Civitas University in Warsaw, Poland. She is the Wladyslaw Bartoszewski co-chair of History and International Studies at the Collegium Civitas.
