THE NATIONAL WWII MUSEUM EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL PRESENTS

2019 AFFINITY PARTNER EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL PROGRAMS

Engage. Reflect. Explore.

As the nation’s foremost expert in World War II history, the Museum is dedicated to providing the highest quality educational content, world class expertise, and the finest accommodations to your loyal constituents. Dear Affinity Partner, As the nation’s foremost expert in WWII history, The National WWII Museum is dedicated to providing the highestquality educational content, world-class expertise, and the finest accommodations to your loyal constituents. The roots of our travel program go back to Dr. Stephen Ambrose and Dr. Nick Mueller, who were colleagues in the Department of History at the University of New Orleans – and best friends. During their three decades at UNO, they developed a passion for helping others retrace the epic story of World War II through their own Normandy tours. While developing the Museum in the 1990s, they planned tours around the wartime route of the Band of Brothers – with Dr. Ambrose’s interviews and research later leading to the best-selling book and HBO miniseries. Since 2004, when we organized our first Museum-designed tour for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day, we have continued the great travel tradition set forth by the Museum’s cofounders. Our nationally recognized travel programs now offer exclusive access to the most intriguing battle sites, rich historical context from expert historians, first-class luxury accommodations, and the opportunity to learn the stories and lessons of the war that changed the world from WWII scholars and veterans. With the growth of our Museum collection, we also incorporate rarely seen archival materials and hand-selected oral histories into our once-in-a-lifetime travel opportunities. Our itineraries are designed to ensure that your alumni experience the most iconic WWII sites with the most knowledgeable guides and finest accommodations while making lifelong friends and connections along the way. I invite you to partner with The National WWII Museum to bring memorable, educational tours to your alumni. We are honored to be your guides through history. Stephen J. Watson President & CEO The National WWII Museum

“We found the Normandy Flagship tour to be extremely well organized in content. The combination of museums, outdoor sites, touring of towns was perfectly combined and orchestrated. The educational information presented was outstanding and extremely beneficial.” - Rachel M., Boston, MA

“I have hosted more than 10 Traveling Aggies trips and this was one of the most enjoyable and memorable I have experienced. The accommodations and itinerary were top-notch and the Museum's network provided us with some special experiences to which others might not have access.”

- Kathryn G, Texas A&M Traveling Aggies

“I have been on dozens of military history tours...and Corinne and Stephane [the Museum guides] measured up with the best. They were well prepared and patient.” – Richard C., Potomac, MD

“There was excellent overall value in this tour. The educational information we received would have been very difficult to obtain during six days had we attempted to tour the various sites on a self-guided tour.” - James H., Farmington Hills, MI

“Breakfasts provided at hotels were excellent. Very good choice of restaurants during tour; enjoyed ambiance and food.“ - Jenny P., NY

“Great value for the money. I learned much more than I expected and returned with greater appreciation and understanding of both the small and big pictures.” – John T., Houston, TX

The National WWII Museum tells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world–why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today–so that all generations will understand the price of freedom and be inspired by what they learn. In 2004, the Museum was designated by Congress as “America's National World War II Museum” with the mandate that the Museum expand its mission to tell the complete story of the American Experience in World War II. Since then, the Museum has collaborated with some of the most respected authors and WWII experts in the world, along with its own curators and staff historians, to ensure the educational content of every itinerary. Tour destinations include battlefields and strategic sites across Europe and the Pacific, including the beaches of Normandy, Saipan and Iwo Jima; Churchill's War Rooms in London; Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Germany; the meeting point of eastern and western allies on the Elbe; and one of the only battlefields on American soil, Pearl Harbor. It has long been known for cultural attractions such as Mont Saint-Michel, the Abbey in Caen, and the Bayeux Tapestry depicting the 1066 Norman invasion of England by William the Conqueror. This evening, meet others joining you on tour at the Welcome Reception and Dinner at your private château. Accommodations: Château de Sully (R,D)

DAY 2: ARROMANCHES The day’s tour of Normandy begins where British airborne troops fired the first shots of the invasion at the crucial Pegasus Bridge. Landing their wooden gliders just yards from the bridge, the men of the British 6th Airborne Division surprised the defenders and scored the day’s first victory. The tour then follows the coastal road past Sword, Juno, and Gold Beaches before arriving in Arromanches, known for the remains of an artificial harbor constructed by the Allies, the famous “Mulberry.” Next is a trip to Longues-sur-Mer, the only German battery in Normandy with the original guns still in place. Accommodations: Château de Sully (B, D)

VIEW OF ARROMANCHES

DAY 3: SAINTE-MÈRE-ÉGLISE & UTAH BEACH

DAY 4: OMAHA BEACH & NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY

This morning starts with an exclusive visit to Château de Bernaville, which served as the headquarters of a German General Wilhelm Falley. In the early morning hours of June 6th, US paratroopers ambushed and killed General Falley, making him the first German General killed in the Normandy campaign and seriously disrupting the German defenses at a critical moment in the Allied landing. We will visit the town of Sainte-Mère-Église, where paratroopers landed during the predawn hours of D-Day. Dropping into the town square already set on fire, the men of the 82nd Airborne Division fought tenaciously against the German defenders for control of this vital crossroads. Here we will visit the recently expanded Musée Airborne and the church made famous in the film The Longest Day.

The morning tour begins at Pointe du Hoc where the 2nd Ranger Battalion landed at the base of a 100-foot cliff and had to scale the vertical face in order to attack this heavily fortified German position. The next stop is Omaha Beach, “Bloody Omaha,” where the US Army overcame the odds to etch a heroic chapter in its history. Visits to the coastal towns St. Laurent-sur-Mer and Viervillesur-Mer provide a close-up view of the intricate German defense system on Omaha and give a sense of the overwhelming odds American soldiers faced on June 6, 1944. The day’s touring ends with a visit to the Normandy American Cemetery in order to pay respects to the 9,387 Americans buried in the ground they helped liberate. Accommodations: Château de Sully (B, L, D)

After lunch on your own in the heart of Sainte-Mère-Église, we begin our exploration of Utah Beach, one of the two American beaches, with its broad vistas and four causeway exits through the flooded fields. After walking in the footsteps of General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., visit the Utah Beach Museum which features a restored B-26 Marauder and detailed recreations of the German beach defenses. We finish our day with a stop at Brécourt Manor, widely known as the scene of Dick Winter’s D-Day assault in the mini-series Band of Brothers. Accommodations: Château de Sully (B, D)

DAY 5: JOURNEY TO ROUEN This morning we will depart after breakfast for our scenic journey to Rouen. En route we will visit the quaint city of Lisieux. Before 1944, this charming little town in the Pays d’Auge was best known as the birthplace of St. Therese, the “little flower.” On June 6, however, Allied bombers appeared over-head, smashing two thirds of the town and killing numerous civilians. Lisieux was a chilling omen of what it would cost to liberate Europe from Hitler’s tyranny. Following lunch nearby, we’ll continue our journey to Rouen for a mid-afternoon embarkation aboard the Joie de Vivre, quite possibly the most luxurious rivership in Europe. This evening we will enjoy a festive welcome reception and Captain’s Dinner. Accommodations: Joie de Vivre (B, L, R, D)

DAY 7: LES ANDELYS & LA ROCHE-GUYON This morning we arrive to Les Andelys, where we will visit Château Gaillard, Richard the Lionheart’s 12th century stronghold, offering inspiring views of the Seine River. Next, we’ll enjoy lunch and a visit to the famous 12th century château on the Seine, where Field Marshal Erwin Rommel had his headquarters. It was at La Roche-Guyon that “The Desert Fox” planned and prepared the tough defenses that the Allies would encounter on D-Day, and it was here he planned German moves in the Normandy campaign. Accommodations: Joie de Vivre (B, L, D)

DAY 8: MANTES-LA-JOLIE

ROUEN, RUE DU GROS-HORLOGE, NORMANDY

DAY 6: SAILING THE SEINE Victor Hugo called Rouen “the city with a hundred bell towers.” In August 1942 it was the scene of the Eighth Air Force’s first bombing mission over Europe. Today, we will see the city’s Renaissance clock tower and the bronze cross that marks the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. We’ll also enjoy stops to sample some delicacies of Normandy, including white cider and Camembert. Following lunch, we will visit the coastal city of Dieppe. The landing by Canadian forces at Dieppe in August 1942 was the dry run for Operation OVERLORD, and pointed out disasterous problems in Allied planning and operations. Lessons learned were crucial to the success of the D-Day landing. Alternatively, you may choose to golf at Rouen’s Mont-Saint-Aignan, just minutes from the city. This 18-hole course offers both seasoned players and beginners the chance to play in a beautiful setting surrounded by woods. Accommodations: Joie de Vivre (B, L, D) 32 | VISIT US AT WW2MUSEUMTOURS.ORG

This morning we dock in Mantes-la-Jolie, gateway to both Versailles and Château Malmaison. The Palace of Versailles was the site where the world’s statesmen signed the ill-fated peace treaty ending World War I. The defeated Germans ultimately rejected the harsh provisions of the pact, setting the stage for another world war. We will visit the famous Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors), the actual site of the treaty signing. We also will tour the royal apartments, which still look much as they did when Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette fled before an outraged mob in 1789. Alternatively, for those who may have visited Versailles on prior trips, we invite you to visit Château Malmaison, once home to Napoleon’s first wife, Josephine, Malmaison is filled with sumptuous Empirestyle furnishings, thanks to Josephine’s keen eye. Here the empress entertained in elegance and created gardens that were world famous in her day. This evening we put a royal finish on your trip with a farewell reception and gala dinner onboard the luxurious Joie de Vivre. Accommodations: Joie de Vivre (B, L, R, D)

DAY 9: DISEMBARK IN PARIS This morning we bid farewell to the Joie de Vivre as we either transfer to the Charles de Gaulle Airport, or to the Westin Paris - Vendôme for those who opt for our three-day optional post-cruise extension program, The Liberation of Paris. (B)

OPTIONAL TWO-NIGHT POST-TOUR EXTENSION PROGRAM

THE LIBERATION OF PARIS Our custom-curated optional post-cruise extension program in Paris focuses on the occupation and liberation of the city in August 1944. Guests first follow in the infamous footsteps of Hitler, visiting some of the sites that he admired during his victory tour in June 1940, including the Opera, Notre Dame, and the Pantheon. The tour stops at the Hotel Le Meurice, where the high drama of German surrender played out, before heading to the Hotel de Ville where liberating American troops fought fiercely in August 1944. We finish with a visit to the Legion of Honor Museum.

East Meets West: The Link-up on the Elbe The Elbe River is one of Europe’s most storied waterways as well as the site of one of the most famous military link-ups in world history: the monumental meeting between the forces of the Western Allies and the Soviet Union on April 25, 1945. This convergence was the result of years of hard-won battles, and meant that the end of the war was finally near. During our cruise, visit the rebuilt city of Dresden, site of one of the most infamous bombing raids in history; tour the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation in Wittenburg, with stops at the All Saints Church and the Luther House; and bear witness to the Nazis’ attempt to hide the true nature of their extermination policies from the world at Theresienstadt Concentration Camp.

A picturesque journey along the river where the most important military link-up of World War II occurred. When Soviet and American forces converged near Torgau, it was a clear sign that Germany’s final defeat was near. Along the way, visit Berlin, Dresden, Wittenburg, Torgau, and Prague.

DAY 1: BERLIN Transfer from Berlin Tegel Airport or the Sofitel Berlin Kurfürstendamm (home to the optional, pre-tour extension, Berlin: From Nazism to the Wall) to the MS Elbe Princesse. The onboard journey begins with the opportunity to become acquainted with fellow travelers during a Welcome Reception and Dinner. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (R/D)

DAY 2: POTSDAM After docking in Potsdam, visit the House of the Wannsee Conference, the building where Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich detailed the “Final Solution,” the extermination of the Jewish population of Europe. On the 50th Anniversary of the Conference, the Wannsee House reopened as a Holocaust Memorial and Museum in 1992. Continue to Potsdam and the Cecelienhof Palace, site of the Potsdam Conference where Truman, Attlee, and 38 | VISIT US AT WW2MUSEUMTOURS.ORG

Stalin discussed the partition of Germany and the trials of Nazi war criminals in 1945. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (B, L, D)

DAY 3: MAGDEBURG Magdeburg has the unfortunate history of having been destroyed twice in its history. During the Thirty Years’ War, the important Protestant city was attacked by a force estimated to have been 40,000 strong. After a day of heavy artillery attacks and several days of looting, many buildings and homes were destroyed, and the city retained only a small fraction of its population following the battle. It never regained its former standing as an equal in importance with the cities of Hamburg and Cologne. In January 1945, a raid by the Royal Air Force again destroyed most of the city, and the Magdeburg Cathedral stands as one of only a few structures to have withstood both attacks. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (B, L, D)

FEATURED HISTORIANS ,

JAMES HOLLAND

ALEXANDRA RICHIE, DPhil,

James Holland is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. The author of the best-selling Fortress Malta, Battle of Britain, and Dam Busters, he has also written nine works of historical fiction, five of which feature the heroic Jack Tanner, a soldier of the Second World War. He is currently writing a three-volume new history of the Second World War in the West and a book about the Defense of the Admin Box in Burma. The first volume, The War in the West: Germany Ascendant, 1939-1941, is out now and the second, The Allies Strike Back: 1941-1943, will be released in October 2017.

Alexandra Richie is a historian of Germany and Central and Eastern Europe, with a specialization in defense and security issues. She completed her B.A. (Hons) in Political Science at the University of Victoria and went on to study at St. Antony’s College, Oxford, where she wrote her doctoral thesis, The Political Manipulation of History in East and West Germany.

He regularly appears on television and radio, and has written and presented the BAFTA-shortlisted documentaries, Battle of Britain and Dam Busters for the BBC, as well as the Battle for Malta, Cold War, Hot Jets, and Normandy 44. Co-founder and Programme Director of the hugely successful Chalke Valley History Festival, he has his own collection at the Imperial War Museum and is Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is also an avid cricketer, and plays for both Chalke Valley CC and the Authors CC.

Richie is also the author of Faust’s Metropolis: A History of Berlin, which was named one of the top ten books of the year by American Publisher’s Weekly, and Warsaw 1944, which won the Newsweek Teresa Torańska Prize for best non-fiction book of 2014 and the Kazimierz Moczarski Prize for Best History Book 2015. She has contributed to many articles, documentaries, radio, and television programs, and is the Convener of the Presidential Counselors at The National WWII Museum. She is also a member of the Senate at the Collegium Civitas University in Warsaw, Poland, and PRAGUE the Władysław Bartoszewski co-chair of History and International Studies at the Collegium Civitas.

DAY 4: WITTENBERG

DAY 5: TORGAU

As the cruise continues south, visit the city of Wittenberg, famous for Martin Luther’s 95 Theses and spared destruction by the Allies during World War II. The catalyst for the Protestant Reformation, Luther’s protests against policies and corruption in the Catholic Church had wideranging and long-term effects on the region. Visit the All Saints Church where the doors commemorate Luther’s actions and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Luther House. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (B, L, D)

In Torgau, the story turns to the monumental meeting on the Elbe between American and Soviet forces. The tour visits both sides of the river: the western side where the American advance was ordered to halt, and the eastern side where the Soviets stopped. At the time of the meeting, plans were already underway to split Germany into occupation zones, and the Red Army was attacking Berlin. During the Cold War, this river would form a portion of the boundary between East Germany and West Germany. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (B, L, D)

DAY 6: DRESDEN Dresden was one of the most important centers of modern art and dance in early 20th century Germany. Tragically, the Allies firebombed Dresden in 1945, almost completely destroying its architecture, paintings, theaters, and museums. During the attack, POW Kurt Vonnegut survived by securing himself in an underground meat locker. The experience became the inspiration for his acclaimed work Slaughterhouse Five. The creative heart of Dresden’s residents remained intact, and painstaking restorations of the buildings continue to this day. Pay a visit to the Bundeswehr Military History Museum, located inside a former arsenal. After lunch continue on to Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady. Destroyed during the firebombing of Dresden in 1945, the ruins of the church sat for almost 50 years as a monument to World War II. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (B, L, D)

DAY 7: BAD SCHANDAU

VIEW OF DRESDEN FROM THE ELBE RIVER

ST. JOHANNIS CHURCH IN BAD SCHANDAU

After docking near the Czech Republic border, travel to one of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe. The Königstein Fortress has been declared impregnable at several times throughout its history. Saxon kings would retreat to this fortress in times of war or instability, and Saxon treasures would be hidden inside. During World War II, the fortress served as a prison – first for Polish prisoners, and later for French officers and generals. In April 1942, French General Henri Giraud escaped the prison by lowering himself down the outer walls and jumping onto a train headed to France. He then traveled to North Africa via a British submarine. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (B, L, D)

DAY 8: LITOMĚŘICE Outside the town of Litoměřice, visit the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, which primarily housed Jews from Bohemia, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany, and later was a transfer point to the death camps in Poland. To the outside world, the Nazis presented Theresienstadt as a model for Jewish resettlement. Propaganda films showed Jews living a comfortable life under the protection of the Third Reich with art and cultural activities available to all. Included in the films was the children’s opera Brundibár, written in 1938 and first performed by child inmates of the camp. A farewell reception, dinner, and special Q&A session with our featured historians this evening provides a meaningful end to a memorable voyage. Accommodations: MS Elbe Princesse (B, L, R, D)

DAY 9: LITOMĚŘICE / PRAGUE Disembark the MS Elbe Princesse this morning and transfer to the Vaclav Havel Airport in Prague or continue on the optional, post-cruise extension program, Prague: Repression and Revolt. (B) 40 | VISIT US AT WW2MUSEUMTOURS.ORG

OPTIONAL TWO-NIGHT PRE-CRUISE EXTENSION PROGRAM

BERLIN: FROM NAZISM TO THE WALL

Our custom-curated, optional, pre-cruise program in Berlin focuses on the city as both the center of the Third Reich and ground-zero for Cold War tensions. The program begins with the story of the city during Hitler’s reign, visiting the sites of the Reichstag Fire, the 1936 Olympics, and the ratification of the German surrender in Karlshorst. The following day, uncover the city’s Cold War history with stops along the remains of the Berlin Wall, at the Allied Museum, and at the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. See how items as small as a broken javelin or pages from a school textbook could symbolize Cold War tensions almost as strongly as the massive and tightly guarded Berlin Wall.

OPTIONAL TWO-NIGHT POST-CRUISE EXTENSION PROGRAM

PRAGUE: REPRESSION AND REVOLT

Explore the history of Prague, beginning with the Nazi takeover in 1939 and the systematic execution of its Jewish population. As Nazi Germany was in full retreat and nearing surrender in May 1945, the citizens of Prague rose up in rebellion to ensure that the Werhmacht could not continue fighting from Czech territory. The rebellion ended with the German surrender on May 8, 1945, and the Red Army occupied the city. By 1948, a repressive Communist government controlled Czechoslovakia. Visit sites associated with the German occupation and the Communist period, including the Jewish Quarter, Prague Castle, and the Church of Cyril and Methodius, where Reinhard Heydrich’s assassins made their last stand. Richard Frank, Author & Historian

Jon Parshall, Author & Historian

Richard Frank is an international expert on the War in the Pacific and a veteran of the Vietnam War. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he was commissioned in the United States Army, where he served for nearly four years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam as an aerorifle platoon leader with the 101st Airborne Division. He completed studies at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC. Soon afterward, he began research on his first book, Guadalcanal: The Definitive Account of the Landmark Campaign, which was published in 1990 and won the United States Marine Corps’ General Wallace M. Greene Award. Frank’s other publications include Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire, which won the 2000 Harry S. Truman Book Award, and MacArthur. He has appeared numerous times on or consulted for television and radio programs, and was also a historical consultant and appeared as a key interviewee in the HBO miniseries The Pacific.

Jonathan Parshall saw his interest in the Imperial Japanese Navy develop early in his childhood. As an adult, that passion led him to create the foremost web site devoted to the Imperial Navy: www.combinedfleet.com, which he founded in 1995. Parshall’s book Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway, which he co-authored with Anthony Tully, is seen as the definitive account of that pivotal battle in the Pacific. He has written for the Naval War College Review, the US Naval Institute’s Proceedings and Naval History magazines, World War II magazine, Wartime (the journal of the Australian War Memorial), Flypast magazine, the Sankei Shimbun, and several overseas aviation publications. He has also illustrated numerous books on the Pacific War (including his friend Richard Frank’s MacArthur). Parshall is an adjunct lecturer for the US Naval War College, and has appeared on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and the BBC. A graduate of Carleton College and the Carlson School of Management, he is currently working on a history of the year 1942, focusing on how the Allies transformed themselves to meet their respective challenges during that year. He also brings an intimate knowledge of Japan to the post-tour extension, having lived in Hiroshima with his wife in the 1990s.

He is currently working on a narrative history trilogy about the Asian-Pacific War. Frank also currently sits on the Museum’s Presidential Counselors advisory board.

Ittsei Nakagawa Japanese American Survivor of Hiroshima

Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Recipient

Born in Fresno, California, in 1930, and raised primarily in California by his immigrant parents, Ittsei Nakagawa is a US citizen of Japanese ancestry. Around 1940, his family recognized that tensions were building between Japan and the United States, and planned a visit to the family elders, who now lived in Hiroshima. Ittsei’s parents left him with his grandparents, returned to California, and planned to bring him home in a few months; but the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, prevented him from returning to the United States. He was now an American citizen stuck in Japan.

A native of Quiet Dell, West Virginia, Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams has led anything but a quiet life. When he turned 16, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) with hopes of staying in West Virginia, but instead served in Montana and was there when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Now at war, the CCC program ended, and Woody returned home. Upon turning 18, Woody attempted to enlist in the Marine Corps and was instead turned down due to the height requirement. However, he did not allow this to quash his sense of patriotism and left home to volunteer for work in a war production factory in Pennsylvania. Upon learning that the Marine Corps adjusted their height requirement, Woody enlisted and was sent to boot camp in San Diego, California.

As a child, Ittsei spoke English as his primary language, so he had to quickly learn Japanese to enroll in school and continue his education. He attended high school for a few years, but as the war raged on he was forced to work in a factory in downtown Hiroshima. This factory was largely a wooden structure, full of mechanical lathes and metal working equipment. Never quite certain what he was building, Ittsei was forced to report to this factory to work. On the morning of August 6, 1945, Ittsei was preparing to start his shift when air raid sirens began to sound. He recalls a lone B-29 flying over the city, and then the “all clear” was given. As people were leaving the air raid shelters and returning to work, Ittsei recalled a sudden shock: The Earth felt as if it were breaking into pieces. There was sudden blackness and ash outside. He was completely lost and confused, but alive and unscathed. He had no idea at the time that he was caught near ground zero of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

Assigned to the 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Woody’s first major combat was on Guam. Armed with an M1 Garand, he found himself after several days on the island defending the line against a Japanese banzai charge. It was his next combat at Iwo Jima, however, where Woody etched his place in history. On February 23, 1945 under immense enemy fire, Woody performed heroic actions with a flamethrower against well-defended Japanese bunkers, which led to his receiving the Medal of Honor. Woody’s service did not end with World War II. He continued serving in the Marine Corps into the 1960s. As a Medal of Honor recipient, he has remained a strong example of character for our military and youth.

On the USS Missouri (BB-63), stand where the formal surrender of the Japanese Empire to the Allied powers took place. After lunch at the historic Natsunoya Tea House, continue on a special visit to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Laboratory at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. missing service men and women throughout the world. This evening, enjoy a welcome reception and dinner with your fellow tour guests on the Diamond Lawn of the Moana Surfrider as you enjoy a lovely island sunset. Accommodations: Westin Moana Surfrider (B/L/R/D)

DAY 3: JOURNEY TO SAIPAN (CROSS THE INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE) After a relaxing morning at leisure, fly to Saipan, advancing to the next day en route by passing over the International Date Line. The American war effort achieved a great crescendo in June of 1944. Immediately following the fall of Rome came the Normandy invasion. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, a great invasion force sailed towards Saipan for a landing on June 15. If captured, Saipan and the neighboring island of Tinian offered airfields from which B-29s could attack the Japanese home islands. Once ashore on Saipan, Americans faced challenges due to formidable geography, a significant civilian population, and Japan’s willingness to fight to the last man. Accommodations: The Kensington Hotel Saipan (B)

DAY 4: SAIPAN LANDING BEACHES, PURPLE HEART RIDGE AND THE SUICIDE CLIFFS The Battle of Saipan moved from South to North, with the invasion beaches located on the southwest coast. After securing the southern sector of the island, American forces slogged northward, facing increasingly stubborn and fanatical Japanese resistance, often to the last man. Today, guests will stand on the landing beaches, explore the bomb magazine used to supply the planes attacking Guam on December 8, 1941, and participate in an incredibly moving visit to the cliffs where thousands of Japanese civilians and soldiers committed suicide upon realizing that Saipan was lost. Along the way, oral histories from the Museum’s collection will highlight the brutal aspects of the battle and the emotions felt by those who witnessed the suicides. Accommodations: The Kensington Hotel Saipan (B/L)

DAY 5: TINIAN AND THE ATOMIC BOMB The island of Tinian is just minutes away from Saipan by air. After arriving at Tinian International Airport by privately chartered aircraft, embark on a tour of iconic North Field. The airfield today is a mixture of modern monuments and

memorials with buildings and vehicles in varying states of preservation and decay. Explore a massive Japanese fuel storage facility where damaged oil drums still remain today. Stand above the bomb pits from which Little Boy and Fat Man were loaded onto the B-29s Enola Gay and Bockscar. Walk the surprisingly narrow White Beach where the US Marine Corps landed to secure the island where debris from the battle remains today. Upon departure from Tinian en route to Saipan, your plane will embark on a scenic flyover of Tinian and the places the tour visited, giving you an aerial perspective of the day’s touring. Accommodations: The Kensington Hotel Saipan (B/L)

DAY 6: JOURNEY TO GUAM After a relaxing morning on Saipan, board a short flight this afternoon to Guam. A US territory since the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, Guam was attacked by the Japanese on December 8, 1941—technically the same day as Pearl Harbor, due to its location on the other side of the International Date Line. The Japanese occupied Guam until August 1944, when the island was liberated by the US 3rd Marine Division, 1st Marine Provisional Brigade, and 77th Infantry Division. This evening, a festive reception welcomes the group to the Dusit Thani Resort before dinner at leisure. Accommodations: Dusit Thani Resort (B/R)

DAY 7: GUAM Using lessons learned in the battle of Saipan, the US invasion of Guam relied upon a 13-day preparatory bombardment. Visits include Asan and Agat landing beaches, where the US Marines and the Army’s 77th Infantry Division faced stiff Japanese resistance. Continue to explore the island, including Ga’an Point overlooking the Orote Peninsula and Agat landing beaches. We will also visit the Asan Bay overlook, home to a memorial wall containing the names of the US servicemen who lost their lives during the 1941 defense of Guam, the liberators of Guam who retook the island in 1944, and the Guamanian soldiers and civilians on the island who endured the Japanese occupation. Visit the US National Park Service

Visitors Center en route, which provides a moving perspective on the Chamorro population’s wartime suffering during the war. The National WWII Museum’s historians traveling with our guests will explain the linkup of the assault forces and the push to liberate the island. Stories from the Museum’s special exhibit, Loyal Forces: The Animals of WWII, will provide additional insight into today’s visit to The National War Dog Memorial. This evening, an engaging panel discussion with museum historians and featured speakers Richard Frank and Jon Parshall will illuminate the significance of our visit tomorrow to the Island of Iwo Jima and the 74th Commemoration Ceremony. Accommodations: Dusit Thani Resort (B/L/D/R)

DAY 8: THE 74TH COMMEMORATION OF IWO JIMA

DAY 9: GUAM

Early this morning, board a privately chartered flight to Iwo Jima to take part in the 74th Anniversary commemorations on the island. The Island of Iwo Jima, now named Iwo To, is open only once per year for this very special Reunion of Honor. On arrival, guests may take the opportunity to hike to the top of Mt. Suribachi, where the iconic flag-raising photo was taken, and attend a joint American and Japanese Water Blessing Ceremony. With the Museum’s veteran guests, explore the volcanic rock beaches, the unique rugged terrain of the island, and reflect on the extreme American loss in this battle: 26,000 casualties in 36 days of combat. Roughly one American for every three who landed on Iwo Jima became a casualty. This day provides a unique opportunity for each guest to honor the men who fought in this historic battle, as well as the Gold Star Families who also gave so much for the capture of this island. Time is provided to absorb as much of the atmosphere and the emotion involved in this iconic American battle before returning to Guam this evening. Accommodations: Dusit Thani Resort (B/L/D)

Enjoy the day at leisure in Guam to unwind from the emotionally charged day on Iwo Jima. Take advantage of the amenities at the Dusit Thani Resort, participate in a cultural excursion, or visit the Senator Antonio M. Palomo Guam Museum & Educational Facility. In the evening, a special Farewell Reception and Dinner recaps the highlights of the tour and offers a glimpse of what is to come on the Road to Tokyo and The Battle for Peleliu optional post-tour extension programs. place on June 6, 1944. The first stop is La Fière, where members of the 82nd Airborne fought off four days of attacks from German troops trying to retake this strategic bridge. Guests hear the stories of Bob Murphy and Johnny Marr in their own words, from The National WWII Museum’s oral-history collection. The next stop is Sainte-Mère-Église, where paratroopers landed during the pre-dawn hours of D-Day. Alex Kershaw Featured Historian and Best-Selling Author

Avenue of Spies The leafy Avenue de Foch, one of the most exclusive residential streets in Nazi-occupied France, was Paris’s hotbed of daring spies, murderous secret police, amoral informers, and Vichy collaborators. So when American physician Sumner Jackson, who lived with his wife and young son Phillip at Number 11, found himself drawn into the Liberation network of the French Resistance, he knew the stakes were impossibly high. Just down the road at Number 31 was the “mad sadist” Theodor Dannecker, an Eichmann protégé charged with deporting French Jews to concentration camps. And Number 84 housed the Parisian headquarters of the Gestapo, run by the most effective spy hunter in Nazi Germany. From his office at the American Hospital, Jackson smuggled fallen Allied fighter pilots safely out of France, a job complicated by the hospital director’s close collaborationist ties. After witnessing the brutal round-up of his Jewish friends, Jackson invited Liberation to officially operate out of his home at Number 11–but the noose soon began to tighten. When his secret life was discovered by his Nazi neighbors, he and his family were forced to undertake a journey into the dark heart of the war-torn continent from which there was little chance of return.

The Bedford Boys On June 6, 1944, nineteen boys from Bedford, Virginia– population just 3,000 in 1944 – died in the first bloody minutes of D-Day. They were part of Company A of the 116th Regiment of the 29th Division, and the first wave of American soldiers to hit the beaches in Normandy. Later in the campaign, three more boys from this small Virginia town died of gunshot wounds.

Alex Kershaw is the author of the widely acclaimed best sellers The Bedford Boys, The Longest Winter, The Few, The Liberator, and Escape from the Deep, as well as biographies of Jack London, Raoul Wallenberg, and Robert Capa. An honorary colonel in the 116th Infantry Regiment, Kershaw began his research for his latest book, Avenue of Spies, while leading a tour of Europe for The National WWII Museum, and helped design this itinerary. He is currently researching a follow-up book to The Bedford Boys about D-Day.

Twenty-two sons of Bedford lost–it is a story one cannot easily forget and one that the families of Bedford will never forget. The Bedford Boys is the true and intimate story of these men and the friends and families they left behind. Based on extensive interviews with survivors and relatives, as well as diaries and letters, Kershaw’s book focuses on several remarkable individuals and families to tell one of the most poignant stories of World War II–the story of one small American town that went to war and died on Omaha Beach. “LES BRAVES MEMORIAL,” OMAHA BEACH, NORMANDY

DAY 3: VIERVILLE-SUR-MER/ THE BEDFORD BOYS: ONE TOWN’S D-DAY SACRIFICE The morning tour begins at Omaha Beach, where the landing craft transporting the Bedford Boys came ashore. While standing on the very section of “Dog Green” sector of Omaha Beach, Kershaw will recount the horror that awaited them at H-Hour on D-Day and their fate, bringing these men and their histories to life. En route to the next destination, listen to the oral history of Dr. Harold “Hal” Baumgarten, who trained with Company A and landed immediately after them. Visits to other sites along Vierville-sur-Mer and at St. Laurent-sur-Mer follow, providing a close-up view of the intricate German defense system and giving a sense of the overwhelming odds the American soldiers faced on D-Day. After a special lunch, the tour continues to Pointe du Hoc, a strategic point that overlooks the surrounding coastline. The 2nd Ranger Battalion successfully scaled the cliffs to neutralize this heavily fortified German position. Guests learn about the desperate battle that took place between the unified 2nd and 5th Rangers fighting against multiple German counterattacks before returning to Bayeux for an evening at leisure. Accommodations: Hotel Villa Lara (B, L) 62 | VISIT US AT WW2MUSEUMTOURS.ORG

DAY 4: OPERATION COBRA & BEDFORD’S FINAL FATE IN NORMADY After breakfast, the tour follows the American advance of the summer of 1944 by heading to St. Lo, a stronghold and transportation hub through which the German army could move men and equipment to block the progress. It was in this area, in efforts to wrest the city from the Germans’ control, that the final two Bedford Boys in Normandy were killed in action. The next stop is at the museum at Le Chapelle de la Madeleine, where guests hear about those who experienced the bombardment in the Battle of St. Lo. After time for lunch and independent exploration, return to the coast at the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. The group joins Kershaw to pay respects at the graves of the Bedford Boys, nine of whom are among the 9,387 Americans buried in the soil that they helped to liberate. After free time to reflect and participate in a wreath laying memorial serivce, the group returns to Bayeux for a private “Farewell to Normandy” dinner at the extraordinary Chateau de Brouay, where guests will sample the region’s classic fare and its finest Calvados, an apple brandy at this storied Normandy chateau. Accommodations: Hotel Villa Lara (B, D)

DAY 5: PARIS ARRIVAL FOLLOWING KERSHAW'S AVENUE OF SPIES This morning begins with breakfast at the hotel before enjoying a scenic drive to Paris for a full day following Kershaw’s Avenue of Spies. Upon arrival, guests visit Napoleon’s tomb at Les Invalides before touring the “Nazi Triangle,” the upscale area where the Gestapo occupied several offices, including the leafy Avenue Foch, which was one of the most exclusive residential streets in Nazioccupied France. During the tour, Kershaw brings to life the tales of intrigue, deception, and danger that took place at various addresses along the avenue, beginning with American physician Sumner Jackson, the protagonist in Avenue of Spies. Jackson lived with his wife and young son Phillip at Number 11, performing dangerous deeds for the French Resistance right under the Nazis’ noses. Down the street at Number 72, Kershaw recounts Colonel Helmut Knochen’s orchestration of the crushing of Resistance forces from this imposing white villa. Across the street at Number 31, Captain Theodor Dannecker and Lieutenant Colonel Adolf Eichmann spent much of June 1942 planning the Grand Rafle—the Great Roundup—of July 16-17, in which German forces took more than 13,000 Jews to a velodrome, before sending them to death camps. Continuing to Number 84, Kershaw relays the stories of horror that took place as brutal Gestapo operatives tortured their “enemies,” including legendary British Special Operations Executive agents Violette Szabo, “The White Rabbit,” and “Madeleine,” in efforts to keep their sinister regime in power. This afternoon, after AMERICAN TROOPS MARCHING DOWN THE CHAMPS ELYSEES

checking into the Westin Paris Vendôme, guests enjoy an evening at leisure in Paris. Accommodations: The Westin Paris Vendôme (B, L)

DAY 6: LIBERATION OF PARIS The morning tour of Paris begins after breakfast and includes the sites with a focus on the occupation and liberation of the city more than 70 years ago. Guests follow in the footsteps of the Führer, visiting several of the landmarks that Hitler admired during his victory tour in June 1940, which proved to be his one and only visit to the “City of Lights.” In addition to the Opera, Notre Dame, and the Pantheon, the tour includes a stop at the Hotel de Ville, where liberating American troops fought fiercely in August 1944, and Hotel Meurice, where the high drama of the German surrender played out, as portrayed in the movie Is Paris Burning? After free time for lunch, the last day in Paris fittingly ends at Père Lachaise, the famous cemetery where guests pay respects to French Resistance heroes and the victims of Nazi rule, many of whom, like Dr. Jackson and his family, were deported to concentration camps. Gather this evening for a farewell dinner with a very special guest who lived through Nazi occupation. Accommodations: The Westin Paris Vendôme (B, D)

DAY 7: RETURN TO THE US After breakfast at the hotel, guests are transferred to the Charles de Gaulle Airport. Alternatively, guests who participate in the Versailles post-tour extension program set out to tour this magnificent palace. (B) SUMNER JACKSON WITH SON PHILLIP

OPTIONAL TWO-DAY POST-TOUR EXTENSION PROGRAM

VERSAILLES, PARIS Our post-tour extension program spends the day at the Palace of Versailles on the outskirts of Paris. It was the site where the world’s statesmen signed the ill-fated peace treaty ending World War I. The defeated Germans ultimately rejected the harsh provisions of the pact, setting the stage for another world war. Guests visit the famous Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors), the actual site of the treaty signing, and tour the royal apartments, which still look much as they did when Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette fled before an outraged mob in 1789. The tour then returns to Paris for an evening at leisure in preparation for the return journey home the next day. (B/L)

DAY 4: ARRIVAL IN ŻAGAŃ TO WROCLAW After an early farewell to Berlin, the group heads to Żagań, a small city in Poland near the German border. During World War II, Żagań was the site of Stalag Luft III. It was from this camp that one of the most daring prisoner escapes took place, providing the inspiration for the 1963 film, The Great Escape. Around eighty prisoners escaped through tunnels underneath the complex. All but three were recaptured, and fifty were executed. A museum at the site of the former camp is dedicated to the martyrdom of Allied prisoners of war. DAY 5: WROCLAW TO KRAKÓW Tour the city of Wroclaw, which was part of Germany until 1945 and was known by its German name, Breslau. Out of range of Allied bombers for most of the war, Breslau remained intact until the closing months. In August 1944 Hitler declared the city a fortress to be defended at all costs. The siege by the Red Army began on February 13, 1945. Soviet artillery and German defenses reduced the city to rubble. The Germans fought to hold the city for 82 days, but surrendered to the Red Army on May 6, 1945, making Breslau the last major German city to surrender. The city is now majority Polish and was a 2016 European Capital of Culture. In the afternoon, the group continues to Krakow after lunch. Accommodations: Radisson Blu Krakow (B, L, D)

DAY 7: KRAKÓW

Start the day with a visit to Oskar Schindler’s factory near “Ghetto Heroes Square”– the site from which Schindler was able to save over 1,000 Jews from the Plaszow forced labor camp, and ultimately from death, as portrayed in the film Schindler’s List. Opened in 2010, the museum housed in the factory’s administrative building includes Schindler’s preserved office, photos, displays about pre-war Krakow, and the story of the five years of Nazi occupation. A thirtymile drive west of Krakow is the Polish town of Oswiecim, known to history by its German name, Auschwitz. The German occupiers took over this former army barracks in 1940 and populated it with Polish political prisoners. As the war continued, the Nazis expanded the camp, imprisoning Jews from all over Europe or sending them on to their deaths. The Martyrdom Museum at Auschwitz is a ghastly reminder of the inhumanity which humans are capable. An evening on your own allows reflection on today. Accommodations: Radisson Blu Krakow (B, L)

Explore Kraków, which was included on UNESCO’s first World Heritage list in 1978. Since the Tatar raids in the 13th century, the Old Town has remained mostly intact, making it the only large Polish city to escape the destruction of World War II. The tour day begins at St. Mary’s Basilica before breaking for an independent lunch in the Old Town Square, Rynek Glowny in Polish, the square is known for its quaint cafés and excellent shopping. The afternoon includes a visit to the Wawel Castle, the seat of Polish kings for hundreds of years, and the Gothic Wawel Cathedral, where Polish kings were crowned and buried for centuries. During the war Hans Frank, Governor General of the occupied Polish territories, installed himself in the Wawel Castle. Calling himself the “King of Poland,” he surrounded himself with stolen art including Leonardo Da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine, and wielded his terrifying power over the population. DAY 8: GDAŃSK Poland’s maritime city on the Baltic Sea, Danzig, now called Gdańsk, was first mentioned in historical documents in 997. In its thousands of years of existence, this venerable port city has changed hands six times–the prize in a longrunning game of tug-of-war between Germany and Poland. This morning, a tour of the city begins at the Museum of the Second World War. Enjoy ample time to explore the Museum, with lunch at your leisure. A short trip to Westerplatte, the place where the Germans fired the first shots of what became World War II, ends the day’s touring. It was here on September 1, 1939, where a German battleship paying a “courtesy call” on Danzig began firing shells at the Polish garrison here. The evening is free to explore Gdańsk and enjoy dinner independently. Accommodations: Sofitel Grand Sopot (B)

DAY 9: WOLF’S LAIR & MIKOLAJKI Drive onward today to Hitler’s secret, fortified, Eastern Front command post “Wolf’s Lair.” The failed July 20, 1944, assassination attempt on Hitler, portrayed in the 2008 movie Valkyrie (starring Tom Cruise), took place within the vast complex. After lunch visit the German command-andcontrol center at Mauerwald–now called Mamerki–which is a massive complex of bunkers and underground tunnels built for the OKH (Oberkommando des Heeres). Here over 40 top Generals and Field Marshals oversaw the war on the Eastern Front. There were 200 structures including 30 bunkers which are still intact. Spend the evening in the resort town of Mikolajki. Accommodations Hotel Mikolajki Conference Center (B, L, D)

Opened in 2004 on the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Warsaw Uprising, this museum is centered on a collection of almost 1,000 photographs taken by photographer and Olympian athlete Eugeniusz Lokajski, who documented the uprising before he was killed in an artillery attack. While at the museum, enjoy a lecture on the Warsaw Uprising and the Polish Resistance. Accommodations: Hotel Bristol (B, R)

DAY 11: WARSAW Spend the day exploring Warsaw, starting at the Genscher Cemetery, Warsaw’s largest Jewish cemetery with over 250,000 people buried on site. Many prominent leaders of Warsaw’s Jewish community are buried here, including Marek Edelman, a leader of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. Continue on to the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews for a guided tour of the exhibits. The afternoon is free for lunch and individual pursuits. Drive a short distance outside of Warsaw this evening to Radzymin, the site of one of last great tank battles of World War II in August 1944. Explore the battlefield with a historian who will explain the events of the battle and their consequences for both the Germans and the Soviets. The tour concludes at the private residence of Dr. Alexandra Richie, which was used as the headquarters for German General Herbert Otto Gille, commander of the 5th SS Panzergrenadier Division Wiking during the battle. Here, Dr. Richie hosts the group to a farewell reception and dinner. Accommodations: Hotel Bristol (B, R, D)

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN PARIS

DAY 2: THE BEACHES OF NORMANDY

Upon arrival at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, we will transfer to the Normandy region. For hundreds of years, the coastal region has been a vital part of the military and political life of Europe and the development of Western Civilization. Famous for its cultural attractions, the region boasts the Abbey at Mont Saint-Michel, the Abbey in Caen, and the Bayeux Tapestry depicting the 1066 Norman invasion of Britain by William the Conqueror. In June 1944, Normandy was the scene of the greatest amphibious invasion in world history. From the beaches of Normandy, the Allies drove inland and turned the tide of the war in Western Europe.

The morning tour begins at Utah Beach with the story of the 4th Infantry Division, Ernest Hemingway’s favorite division that he joined en route to Paris in July 1944. On the beach, hear the story of Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., who was one of the first men off of the landing crafts on June 6, 1944. Continue on to Omaha Beach, where the tour guide divides this famous beach into the different landing sites and explains the unique stories that occurred at each location. Dr. Miller will discuss Hemingway’s cross-channel attempt to reach Omaha Beach as part of the Seventh Wave. While standing on the beach, the words of Ernie Pyle in “A Long Thin Line of Personal Anguish” creates images of 1944, with the waves brushing against a line of “socks and shoe polish, sewing kits, diaries, Bibles and hand grenades” along with other pieces of “strewn personal gear, gear that will never be needed again, of those who fought and died to give us our entrance into Europe.” The day’s touring ends with a visit to Colleville-sur-Mer in order to pay respects to the 9,387 Americans buried in the ground they helped liberate. The visit includes a special wreathlaying memorial service at the American cemetery. Accommodations: Château de Sully (B, L, D)

day 3: THE BOCAGE / MONT SAINT-

DAY 4: SAINT-MALO

This morning, traverse the Norman Bocage, which threatened to stall the 4th Infantry Division indefinitely, reducing the fighting to field-by-field. The route from Bayeux to Saint-Lo is marked by the dense, foreboding hedges that proved almost impenetrable to the American forces. Upon reaching Saint-Lo, read some of the numerous dispatches covering the assault on the city and the final breakout from Normandy, Operation Cobra. In the afternoon, the tour visits Mont Saint-Michel, a tidal island one mile off the coast of Normandy. Enjoy the stunning views of the Abbey and enjoy independent exploration of the small town below. Over dinner, relive the meeting of Hemingway and fellow journalist Robert Capa, who dined together at Hotel La Mère Poulard in July 1944. Continue on to the walled city of SaintMalo in the French region of Brittany. Accommodations: Maison des Armateurs (B, D)

To walk the streets of Saint-Malo is to step back in time. The cobbled streets, impressive walls, and stone buildings return its visitors to the city’s days as a haven for privateers. In August and September 1944, Saint-Malo suffered heavily from American bombing raids designed to force the German defenders out of the city. Journalist Lee Miller made her way to Saint-Malo from Normandy in August, believing the fighting was over, but she found the 83rd Division fighting Germans who still held the citadel. Sheltering in a dugout as gunfire caused stones to fall into the street, she remarked, “I cursed the Germans for the sordid, ugly destruction they had conjured up in this once beautiful town.” In Saint-Malo today, the morning takes us on a guided tour of the restored city. This afternoon is free to discover the hidden corners and tidal islands on your own. Accommodations: Maison des Armateurs (B, L)

DAY 5: CHARTRES CATHEDRAL & PARIS Leaving Saint-Malo, the tour moves to Paris, visiting Chartres Cathedral one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. Its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site calls it the “high point of French Gothic art”. During the Allied advance to Paris, orders came in for the bombing of the cathedral to neutralize suspected German snipers. Colonel Welborn B. Griffith drove to the cathedral, conducted a full reconnaissance, and reported that there were no Germans inside the cathedral, sparing it from the bombing. Colonel Griffith was killed that same day in fighting north of Chartres. The day ends in Paris with a group dinner. Accommodations: Westin Paris-Vendôme (B, D)

DAY 6: HEMINGWAY’S PARIS Embedded with the 4th Infantry Division, Hemingway was at the forefront of the Liberation of Paris. Start the day with a visit to the Arc de Triomphe and a stroll along the Champs-Élysées. Continue on to Hotel le Meurice, where the high drama of the German surrender played out before heading to the Hotel de Ville, where liberating American troops fought fiercely in August 1944. The afternoon is at leisure to explore more of Paris. Join the group for evening cocktails at the Ritz and embody the spirit of Hemingway’s “liberation” of the establishment on August 25, 1944. Upon arrival, Hemingway reportedly jumped from his jeep, announcing that he had come to liberate the Ritz.

After leaving their weapons outside at the request of the manager, Hemingway and his band of liberators entered and enjoyed the finer parts of liberation. Accommodations: Westin Paris-Vendôme (B, L)

DAY 7: WWI BATTLEFIELDS & THE SURRENDER AT REIMS On the outskirts of Paris, we visit some of the WWI battlefields before returning to our journey through WWII at the Surrender Museum in Reims. In the early morning hours of May 7, 1945, a surrender ceremony was held in Reims at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. Signed by Walter Bedell Smith on behalf of the Allied Expeditionary Force, Ivan Susloparov for the Soviet High Command, and Alfred Jodl on behalf of the German High Command, the surrender document called on all German forces to cease operations by 23:01 hours on 8 May. The end of the war was the end of an era for the war correspondents. After years of covering conflict, heroism, and suffering, a feeling of “What’s next?” followed the initial jubilation. Journalists like Martha Gellhorn, Lee Miller, and Don Whitehead had spent years covering the largest conflict in human history with its tales of horror, sacrifice, and heroism. The subject of their future stories was uncertain. Following the visit to Reims, our journey continues to Aachen and the Huertgen Forest. DAY 8: HUERTGEN FOREST & HENRI-CHAPELLE AMERICAN CEMETERY The history of the 4th Infantry Division refers to the Huertgen Forest as a “cold jungle hell—a death factory.” Small advances resulted in heavy casualties. The forest was full of steep hills, thick woods, numerous creeks, belts of mines, and barbed wire rigged with booby traps. The roads were poor and winding, and it was wet and cold. On a coach tour of the forest, view the remnants of battle, including foxholes and bunkers. In the town of Vossenack view the human costs of the war at the town church and the German War Cemetery. The very small church was the scene of close fighting, and was eventually totally

destroyed. It was rebuilt after the war with an inscription on the door to commemorate the dead, and a monument in the nearby cemetery. Our tour ends with the opportunity to pay respect to the fallen American soldiers at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery. Accommodations: : Hotel Pullman Quellenhof (B, R, D)
