PRESERVING HISTORY IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NATIONAL WWII MUSEUM The National WWII Museum in New Orleans opened on June 6, 2000, as The National D-Day Museum and was designated by Congress in 2004 as America’s National WWII Museum. Founded by historian and author Stephen Ambrose, the Museum tells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world—why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today—so that all generations will understand the price of freedom and be inspired by what they learn. The Museum’s educational travel programs bring the same tradition of inspiration, excellence, and thoughtful inquiry to travel destinations around the world, with tours designed by leading historians and led by Museum curators and expert local guides. ABOUT THE NATIONAL NAVY UDT-SEAL MUSEUM The National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum is the only museum dedicated solely to preserving the history and heritage of the Navy SEALs and their predecessors, including Naval Combat Demolition Units, Office of Strategic Services Maritime Units, Amphibious Scouts and Raiders and Underwater Demolition Teams. Located in Fort Pierce, Florida the birthplace of the Navy Frogman, the Museum promotes public education by providing the opportunity to explore the history of Naval Special Warfare. We honor our fallen on the black granite walls of the Navy SEAL Memorial housed on Museum grounds while caring for our families through the Trident House Charities Program which includes the Trident House, Navy SEAL Museum Scholarships and Family Support initiatives. D-Day–the opening of a second front in Europe–was 4 years in the making. From the moment the Nazis conquered Western Europe in June 1940, following their May 1940 blitzkrieg offensive, the Allies planned and repared for their eventual cross-channel invasion and return to the continent. In June 2019, The National WWII Museum will be retracing the steps, first of the German juggernaut and then of the Allies’ triumphant return to, and liberation of Europe. Join us as we set sail from Amsterdam, which suffered under the jackboot for over four years, then to Rotterdam, the first city to experience the full might of the Nazi onslaught, resulting in the obliteration of much of the city. The destruction of Rotterdam served as a harbinger of things to come in Europe and around the world.

Onward to Belgium, stops in Bruges and Ghent tell the stories of the German plunder of European treasures. We will view the Ghent Altarpiece and the Madonna of Bruges while learning about the Monuments Men and their efforts to rescue and return stolen art, often behind enemy lines. Our next port of call is the coastal town of Dunkirk, France. During the war, an evacuation off the continent saved the British Expeditionary Forces, which Churchill later referred to as the “Miracle at Dunkirk,” affording these men the chance to “fight another day.” While in the area, we will also visit Calais, often considered the most formidable portion of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall. Continuing along the coast, we dock at Dieppe, location of the Allies’ August 1942 attempt to establish a foothold on the mainland, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, but teaching valuable lessons to the Allied invasion planners. At last we arrive to the beaches of Normandy where the Allied nations made their triumphant return on June 6, 1944. Though this was an eventual success, it was a hard, bitter fight to invade the vast, open beaches and fight inland towards Paris –and ultimate victory.
