A RACE FOR PEACE INSIDE THE
TOUR DE TIMOR
The Dirty Nomad
BEST TIMES TO GO The Tour de Timor was timed with climate in mind. TimorLeste is best visited around Spetember to avoid high humidity. May to November is the dry season so the weather will be best at this time. December to April is the wet season so roads (especially unsealed) can be impassable. Mind you, this might appeal to mountain bikers ;o)
OTHER ACTIVITIES Being the worlds newest country, the diving and snorkelling in Timor-Leste is immaculate. Timor-Leste is fast becoming a mecca for underwater activities. Ivan and I packed up our snorkelling gear on to the panniers of the bike which worked well. Jumping off the bike in the mid day heat, into the cool crystal clear oceans is just magic! Also check out the trekking at Mt Ramelau and Mt Matebian if you fancy giving your back side a break.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Getting Started in Timor-Leste
The unspoilt travellers destination. Where we stayed in Dili: Timor Lodge Hotel. Very basic cabin accomodation but perfect for the Tour de Timor as there are lots of bikers here so no problem bring dirty kit through the place. The Timor Lodge was the hub of activity for TdT 2009 so it made sense to stay here. Unofficially, you may be able to put your tents up if the accomodation is chocca bloc.
Why not follow the classic Tour de Timor route shown below? The route was put together to give the racers an overall view of this amazing island, from the cool coast to the cloudy mountain villages. Check out the following article published in Australian Mountain BIke magazine in November 2009 for more information
Situated 10 minutes drive from Dili Airport. No current phone numbers - do a google nearer the time. Recommended reading: Lonely Planet guide to East Timor
