Basic music concepts with popular songs Aims - Understanding of music concepts: Difference between beat & rhythm Stress, meausures (AmE) / bar (BrE) Pause, silence. Anacruse Form - Comparison between sounds and music duration's signs : Measures, notes values, silence, bar line. - Getting used to the natural rhythm and tone of English. - Awareness about the difference between written and speaking English. - Learn lyrics by heart. Although the student may never get the chance to say exactly that line, having one memorable example of an English grammatical form in their head can make it much easier to learn other examples of the same grammar.

Methodology 1. Listen to the song feeling the steady beats. 2. Listen to the song feeling the stressed beat. Probably every 4 beats.

3. Try to hum ( sing without opening your mouth ) doing the bar's gesture. 4. Work with the text. Chorus/refrain first, then verses. a) Sing along with guitar or piano accompaniment ( if possible ) reading the lyrics. b) Sing slower and “a capella” (alone) paying attention to the correct pronunciation. c) Underline the stressed words or syllables of the melody. d) Get the meaning of all expressions. That could be tricky sometimes... Now, you will be ready to learn the lyrics by heart. It is challeging but fun!! 5. Make out song's form. Probably every eight measures: Intro, verses, chorus... 6. Complete musical picture writing lyrics below beats. 7. Compare sounds with notes values in the musical picture. 8. Analize the music sheet of the song.

Assessment 1. Follow the beat with the 4/4 bar's movement. 2. Try to sing with the correct pitch and rhythm following the instrument backing. 3. Shows accuracy stressing words and pronouncing them.
