Welcome to the ninth Music@Malling Festival - a festival that promotes outstanding artists in historical venues in and around West Malling, Kent. The festival runs from 15th-28th September, 2019 and celebrates an eclectic mix of music old and new! 450 years of music are explored ranging from Baroque Classics by Dowland, Purcell, Handel, Gabrielli, Biber, Vivaldi and Bach through to music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Jazz events include The James Pearson Trio - resident at Ronnie Scott’s - celebrating legendary collaborations and The Callum Au Big Band with star vocalist Iain Mackenzie, performing hits from the shows in From Berlin to Broadway. Other highlights include an all star performance of Stravinsky - The Soldier’s Tale with a new work by James Pearson “Inspired by Stravinsky” which receives its world premiere. There is a wealth of concerts by top class instrumentalists and ensembles including The Fidelio Trio, Chamber Domaine, Alessandro Fisher, Sholto Kynoch, Lizzie Ball, Miloš Milivojevi ć, Richard Harwood, Sami Junnonen, The Villiers Quartet, Steven Devine and many others… Outreach events include concerts for pre-schoolers with Matthew Sharp and The Wheels on Debussy, The Three Little Pigs for 15 primary schools, side-by-side events and Go Compose for young music creators from across Kent. There is something for everyone in this festival that promises to bring world-class music to people’s doorsteps. Schoenberg arr. Steuermann - Verklaerte Nacht, Op.4 Fauré - Piano Trio in D, Op.120 Internationally acclaimed ensemble, The Fidelio Trio, perform Schoenberg’s expressionist masterpiece Verklaerte Nacht. Written in 1899, this sublime work was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel about love and forgiveness. The concert includes Fauré’s late masterpiece the Piano Trio in D, Op.120 written in 1923. A Musical Portrait of Stravinsky and Chanel 7pm - All Saints Church, Tudeley, TN11 0NZ Lizzie Ball - Violin/Vocals Miloš Milivojevićć - Accordion A fascinating exploration of 1920’s Paris through words, music and fashion in the stunning setting of All Saints’, Tudeley - the only church in the world to have complete Marc Chagall windows. Chagall was based in Paris in the 1920s and was part of the vibrant artistic scene that is celebrated in this concert. Tickets: £20

Saturday 21st September A Life in Music 10.30am - Pilsdon Barn, West Malling, ME19 6HH Alexander Goehr String Quartet Cycle with The Villiers Quartet Meet the Composer - Alexander Goehr in conversation with Professor Jonathan Cross (University of Oxford) and poet Gabriel Levin A pupil of Olivier Messiaen in the 1950’s and a contemporary of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr is a celebrated contemporary composer, academic and teacher. A unique series of events explores A Life in Music and includes performances of all his String Quartets performed alongside the music of Henry Purcell and poetry by Gabriel Levin.

The Four Seasons 7pm - St.Mary’s Church, West Malling, ME19 6NE Chamber Domaine (Side-by-Side project) Vivaldi - The Four Seasons Piazzolla - The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires Chamber Domaine perform two striking interpretations of The Four Seasons from the 18th and 20th centuries by candle-light with poetry readings by Federico Garciá Lorca and the sonnets that form the programme to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The concert also gives young string players from across Kent the chance to play side-by-side with outstanding professional musicians. Tickets: £20

Some of Europe’s finest jazz musicians perform under the direction of star trombonist and band leader Callum Au, performing hits ranging from the cabarets of 1920’s Berlin to the much loved shows on Broadway. Stravinsky - Piano Rags Stravinsky - Three Pieces for Clarinet Pearson - Inspired by Stravinsky (world premiere) Interval Stravinsky - The Soldier’s Tale Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky - The Soldier’s Tale. This iconic, multi-media work will be performed by internationally acclaimed ensemble, Chamber Domaine. The concert also includes the world premiere of a new work by James Pearson that explores the jazz elements in Stravinsky’s music which can be heard in the Soldier’s Tale, Piano Rags and Three Pieces for Clarinet all written at the end of The First World War.
