Welcome to the 11th Music@Malling Festival - a festival that brings outstanding music to historic venues in and around West Malling, Kent live and online. The festival runs from 24th September - 2nd October 2021 and celebrates a fascinating mix of music old and new! A wealth of contemporary music is explored with works by leading contemporary composers Brian Elias, Mark-Anthony Turnage CBE, Eleanor Alberga OBE and many more… Recitals in the iconic setting of Malling Abbey include concerts by Craig Ogden - Guitar; Richard Harwood - Cello and Stephen Devine - Harpsichord; Thomas Bowes - Violin and the world-renowned viol consort, Fretwork performing Purcell’s Fantasias interleaved with new works by Alexander Goehr, Gavin Bryars and John Woolrich. Jazz events include Swingin’ Session with jazz legend, Liane Carroll and Quintet-à-Tête led by Callum Au who recently won Album of the Year in the prestigious Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Other events include An Evening with Cole Porter with the James Pearson Trio and Ella and Louis with the Immy Churchill Trio in The Farmhouse. Classical Kicks make a welcome return with an evening of classical, jazz, world and folk music led by the irrepressible, Lizzie Ball. Beethoven is celebrated in a series of concerts including the Piano Sonatas with virtuoso pianist Daniel Grimwood; the Sonatas for Cello and Piano with renowned chamber musicians, Adrian Bradbury and Andrew West and String Quartets performed by the Sacconi and Hill Quartets. One of the world’s leading contemporary music ensembles, The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group visits Malling with a concert of Turnage, Saunders and Alberga including a performance of Concertino for Clarinet and Ensemble featuring soloist Jon Carnac. Chamber Domaine perform an evening of music inspired by the British Isles presented by Classic FM’s Aled Jones MBE including the world premiere of Elias - Capriccio for Bassoon and Strings. There is something for everyone in this festival that brings world class music making to people’s doorsteps. Saturday 25th September Swingin’ Sessions - Quintet-à-Tête, featuring Jazz legend Liane Carroll 7pm, St.Mary’s Church, West Malling, Kent, ME19 6NE Callum Au co-leads the Quintet-à-Tête with award-winning jazz trumpeter James Davison. Heavily influenced by the classic 1960’s Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyeer Quintet, the group’s mission is to play lively, fun and exciting jazz with an emphasis on melody and groove. The band features the superb rhythm section of James Pearson - Artistic Director of Ronnie Scott’s, Conor Chaplin - Dinosaur and Matt Skelton - The John Wilson Orchestra. The group has performed in all the top jazz clubs around the country to critical acclaim and have recently recorded their first album at Stadium Studios. The ensemble perform tonight with multi-award winning vocalist and pianist, Liane Carroll.
