THE SACRAMENTO CHILDREN’S CHORUS The Sacramento Children’s Chorus was co-founded in 1993 by Lynn Stevens and Dr. Donald Kendrick while Ms. Steven was getting her Masters in Choral Conducting at Sacramento State University. During this time, she had the vision of establishing a local children’s choir. Now, twenty-six years later, the Sacramento Children’s Chorus is four choirs strong with approximately 100 singers. It also offers early experiences in the music program for younger children. The Sacramento Children’s Chorus continues to provide music education and performance opportunities to children all over the Sacramento region as well as inspiring audiences with beautiful music, sung in many languages and celebrating different cultures. The Sacramento Children’s Chorus is vitally important today as we watch music education vanish from our schools and our children’s lives. The Sacramento Children’s Chorus presents three seasonal concerts each year and has performed with the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, Sacramento Ballet, and Sacramento Opera and at the Sacramento Jazz Festivals. Other noteworthy civic performances include the opening games of the Sacramento River Cats, the memorial services of Congressman Robert Matsui and Mayor Joseph Serna, the inaugurations of Gov. Gray Davis and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Opening of the 2009-2010, 2012-2013 and 2018-2019 Legislative Session, and the grand opening of the new Crocker Art Museum. Alex Grambow graduated from the University of the Pacific with a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in vocal music. While attending Pacific, Grambow was the recipient of the Presser Scholarship. He trained with Dr. Lynelle Wiens, Professor of Voice at University of the Pacific. Grambow’s performing experience includes Music Circus, Woodland Opera House Theatre Company, Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra and Westminster Church Choir. Mr. Grambow is currently the Music Director at the Northminster Presbyterian Church. Grambow believes that music provides children with a unique way to learn about the world and a safe and nurturing opportunity for self-expression. Before joining SCC as the Artistic Director, he worked with children in three successful music programs. He taught in Twin Rivers Unified School District where he ran two different music programs, one at Foothill High School and the other at Foothill Ranch Middle School. Between the two schools, he taught 5th through the 12th grade and was in charge of four choirs and two bands. Prior to Twin Rivers Unified School District, Grambow taught at Harmony Stockton, Stockton Unified School District, an El Sistema inspired program.

The Madrigals also represented the Western United States at the American Choral Directors’ Convention in Honolulu. Some of the Madrigals’ most cherished memories, however, have been through community outreach. From the time-honored tradition of The Madrigal Dinner to preparing and serving meals to less fortunate, the Madrigals are committed to their “musical message of joy and hope” through song and service. Dr. Karen Gardias directs the Jazz Choir, Advanced Treble Choir, Madrigals, and Concert Choir. She also teaches AP Music Theory and chairs the Music Department. In the summer of 2013, Enright accompanied the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra on their tour of Italy (Venice, Lucca, and Rome). At St. Peter’s Basilica he played solos at communion and for postlude. In 2015, he accompanied the SCSO again, this time to Northern France and England, performing a grand improvisation in French Classical style and other period music on the 1741 Parisot organ of the Abbaye Saint-Martin de Mondaye in Normandy. In November of 2011 Enright relocated to Sacramento to become organist of St. John’s Lutheran Church and accompanist for the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, the Sacramento State University Chorus and Men’s and Women’s choirs, and the Schola Cantorum of Sacred Heart Church. In the Fall of 2018 he became Accompanist II at Sac State, a position he shares with Renée Harris. Passions away from the organ loft include hiking, yoga, Argentine Tango, and whitewater rafting and kayaking.

PROGRAM NOTES O mio babbino caro
O mio babbino caro Mi piace, è bello, bello Vo’ andare in Porta Rossa A comperar l’anello! Sì, sì, ci voglio andare! E se l’amassi indarno, Andrei sul Ponte Vecchio, Ma per buttarmi in Arno! Mi struggo e mi tormento! O Dio, vorrei morir! Babbo, pietà, pietà! Babbo, pietà, pietà!
Oh my dear papa I like him, he is so handsome. I want to go to Porta Rossa To buy the ring! Yes, yes, I want to go there! And if my love were in vain, I would go to the Ponte Vecchio And throw myself in the Arno! I am pining, I am tormented! Oh God, I would want to die! Father, have pity, have pity! Father, have pity, have pity!

As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, “Where is your God?”

IN MEMORY OF DR. ERIC HAMMER (1951-2019) Dr. Eric Hammer served 26 years as Director of Bands and Professor of Music Education at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music, Stockton, CA. Together with his faculty colleagues, Dr. Hammer built and sustained the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and University Concert Band and supervised the student-led Pep Band. He has led the 50-60-member Symphonic Wind Ensemble to national prominence. The group was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in March of 2019 during the New York Wind Band Festival. Dr. Hammer was highly respected as an educator and conductor and recently was recognized as the Outstanding University Educator by the California Music Educators Association. His influence extended far beyond Pacific through the many hundreds of students and educators he taught in clinics and conferences or conducted in performances across the United States and abroad. Dr. Hammer inspired young musicians teaching at summer band camps, conducting honor bands, adjudicating band festivals and giving clinics at high schools. It was not uncommon for students to say that he was the reason they enrolled at Pacific. He guided music education student teachers as they launched their careers throughout California and initiated and organized the Pacific Western Concert Band Festival held at Pacific for the past 13 years, which draws top student musicians from schools throughout the Western United States. Dr. Hammer was loved by his students and colleagues and will be deeply missed. Onward.
IN MEMORY OF DR. ERIC HAMMER (1951-2019) Youth
By Samuel Ullman (1840-1924)
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exist in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what’s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty. But as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.
