Pursue Your Passion

Conservatory of Music The Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific prepares tomorrow’s performers, teachers, therapists, composers, scholars and music industry leaders. We believe the essential stories in music are ones of innovation and connection. Students craft their future exploring musical traditions and an ever-expanding range of repertoires and styles.

As someone who has wanted to get into the music industry without much previous musical experience, the music industry studies major is absolutely perfect. It gives me comprehensive knowledge of various music business, management and production elements, all of  which will help me on my future path. I already had opportunities to work at a festival through connections which I don’t think I would have had otherwise. Not to mention, everyone in the conservatory is so kind and welcoming. Degrees and Programs The conservatory offers 11 undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as a music minor for undergraduates. Our courses provide a strong foundation in musicianship; supportive one-to-one instruction in instrumental, jazz, piano and voice areas; and a broad range of performing ensembles. In class and in our communities, we demonstrate how music is central to the world’s many economies, cultures and stories. Undergraduates at Pacific gain experiences typically reserved for graduate students elsewhere. Whether as an operatic or musical theatre lead in our productions, a member of a jazz combo or a partner in our student-run Pac Ave recording label, our students grow individually as leaders and together as collaborators. If you are interested in a music major, minor or double major, either within the conservatory or in another area of study, we will help you create your path.

When I arrived at Pacific, I thought I’d be just another transfer student at the conservatory left to my own resources, but from the audition day to my performances, the faculty have been there to help me in every way possible. The campus feels like a home where we can shape our ‘noise’ and ideas into definable pieces of art. It’s a great place to explore new music and see a smiling face around every corner. Pacific is a beautiful campus and a perfect sandbox for the motivated musician. The facilities are superb, especially for pianists! The faculty are very encouraging and engaged, and everything feels connected. I feel like all resources I need musically, academically or otherwise are at my fingertips while I am trying my best to balance the advancement of my pianism, repertoire and creativity. I am grateful that there are ample opportunities here to stretch and develop my skill sets. Toby Keys ’22 MAJOR: Jazz Studies Honors, Piano HOM ETOWN: Carmichael, CA

The best part about being a music industry studies major at Pacific is getting to work with the best professors. Because class sizes are much smaller here, I am able to get close with all of my professors and make really good industry connections. These connections allow me to get hands-on experience in my field even before graduation. June Benoit ’23 MAJOR: Music Industry Studies HOM ETOWN: Palos Verdes Estates, CA

I love Pacific because it gives students the opportunity to explore outside the boundaries of tradition. Pacific continues to build an environment that embraces change and keeps us at the forefront of the music industry. Our Alumni Soar Our graduates are making music with the San Francisco Opera, at New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center and internationally. They work at the intersection of the arts and technology at companies such as Apple, Facebook, Google and Universal Music Group. They help administer programs at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Aspen Music Festival and School, and they are leading scholars and music therapists throughout the United States. Several alumni continue on to leading graduate schools including Columbia, Duke, Juilliard, Northwestern, University of Maryland, University of North Texas and USC.

Going to Pacific was the best decision I ever made in my career. I really can’t overstate how true it is that I would not have had my professional opportunities without the connections and skills I gained at Pacific. Also, the mentorship I received profoundly impacted not just my career but how I define success for myself. As a naturally restless individual, I’m thankful to all the professors and staff at Pacific for giving me the opportunity to grow into myself. Alexander Noxsel ’17 BS, Music Industry Studies Streaming Manager, Verve Records

I chose Pacific because of their amazing music education program as well as their 100% job placement. The sense of community was immediate, and I was able to make lifelong friendships. My professors were always there to push and encourage me to be a well-rounded musician for myself and my students. Every skill that I learned at Pacific I was able to apply immediately to my job as a music teacher. Vivian Tran ’18 BM, Music Education, Piano Music Teacher, Colonial Heights School in Stockton

Pacific has always felt like a family to me since the first day I visited campus. The professors, staff and students create a genuinely kind and caring environment making it easy to feel welcome regardless of where you came from or what you have been through. The small class sizes contribute vastly to a more personal and more intimate style of learning that I thrive in. Cristina O’Brien ’22 Staff Sergeant, United States Air Force Reserve MAJOR: Music Therapy, Trumpet HOM ETOWN: Carmichael, CA
