PROGRAM NOTES Lanzilotti: with their I you your fuse Leilehua Lanzilotti is a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) composer/sound artist. A “leading composer-performer” (New York Times), Lanzilotti composes works characterized by expansive explorations of timbre. Lanzilotti’s practice explores radical indigenous contemporaneity, integrating community engagement into the heart of projects. By world-building through multimedia installation works and nontraditional concert experiences/ musical interventions, Lanzilotti’s works activate imagination around new paths forward in language sovereignty, water sovereignty, land stewardship, and respect. Note by the composer The first movement uses rhythms derived from transcribing lines of a poem by Anne Sexton. The rhythms in the following movements are based on excerpts from that text as it is washed off (the resulting text that I created through this process is included below). The diminution of the text functions as both structure and metaphor in the piece. ii. she, she down cast she exquisite dull and a face the wild window by at three—moon drawn up there resting, she with their I you your fuse, angrily for her (I, I) she, she, a window—moon drawn—I angrily iii.
