This recital is presented as a degree requirement towards the Bachelor of Music in Music Performance. California-based percussionist Tyler Golding is a well-traveled musician, having performed in England, Ireland, Wales, and the prestigious Carnegie Hall. As a senior at the University of the Pacific, he plans to graduate in the spring of 2019 with a Bachelor’s in Music with an emphasis in Percussion Performance. Mr. Golding was born and raised in Fresno, California. He was exposed to percussion at a young age as a member of the “We Got The Beat” Youth Percussion Band, directed by Brenda Myers. The group’s strong emphasis on improvisation and ensemble communication accelerated his musical growth. Mr. Golding enrolled at University of the Pacific, originally as a Music Education major. However, he realized his passion lay not with teaching, but with performing. He decided to change his major to Percussion Performance, allowing him more time to hone his skills. The switch paid dividends when Mr. Golding was afforded the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the University of the Pacific and San Joaquin Delta choirs as well as the Pacific Symphonic Orchestra. After making the plunge into the world of Percussion Performance, Tyler Golding found his love of solo marimba literature. He has since performed three marimba concertos at University of the Pacific: Sarmiento’s Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra, Koshinski’s Concerto for Marimba and Choir, and Séjourné’s Concerto for Marimba and Strings as winner of the school’s annual concerto competition. Mr. Golding is also a recipient Mu Phi Epsilon Performance Scholarship Competition with his performance of Glentworth’s Blues for Gilbert and Gerassimez’s Asventuras. After graduation, Tyler Golding plans on partnering with some of the musicians in his hometown of Fresno, hopefully performing Séjourné’s Double Concerto for Marimba and Vibraphone with various ensembles around California and beyond. He prides himself on being an audience-centric performer, performing repertoire that is not only musically and technically challenging, but pleasing to the ear.
